DO IT! ASSIGNMENT
So, I wasn’t able to attend the class where they did the Do it! assignment so I chose one that I could do at home.
Prompt: Watch TV with the sound turned off for an hour
I started this assignment at 8:08 and I chose to watch Pucca since they don’t talk much, so i thought it would still entertain me for AN HOUR

I finished the assignment at exactly one hour, 9:08. Honestly it was really strange because I would get distracted easily and they did talked al little bit so I was really curious on what the episode was about :,)

Do it activity
Prompt: Dance with a large piece of chalk mark up the nearest surface and pay attention to the movement of your feet music optional
For this prompt it was decided to change things a little since we didn't really have chalk and we didn't want to scratch the floor either. It was decided to use 12 papers on the ground secured with various materials so that they would not fly away. Each of the group members chose a marker of her favorite color and a favorite song. For this proposal we had to stand up and dance to the rhythm of the music, but we decided to lie down on top of the papers and use the markers to draw to the rhythm of the music without seeing. This activity was very fun since we were trying to experience what innovation is, doing things without thinking and just letting our imagination flow since, as could be seen, we had to change several things in the “do it” prompt. On the other hand, I also really liked being able to meet new classmates and share conversations at the same time.

A Little About Me
Hello, my name is Allyson Thurston, but you can call me Ally. I attended high school at Newburgh Free Academy, graduating in 2013. I currently am majoring in Psychology; my end goal is to become a marriage and family counselor. I chose to pursue psychology due to my love of helping others. All my life I have found myself being the “therapist” or “mom figure” of my friend group, everyone seemed to gravitate towards me when they needed a listening ear. My goal is to pursue a career through the government, I would like to work on military bases as a counselor and give help to those who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe, as well as their families. Aside from helping those who need it, pursuing this career would also enable me to travel and live-in different countries. Before covid-19 I used to travel as frequently as I could. I find myself going crazy being restricted to one place for a long period of time, I like to blame it on my adventurous soul. Until 2019 I was fortunate enough to live in Okinawa, Japan, a prime location for anyone wanting to explore the Asian Pacific region. Living in a different country gave me a completely new perspective on life. Seeing how another culture lived made me appreciate the diversity every culture has to offer. Once it is safe to travel again, I plan on returning to Okinawa, it has become a place that I feel most at home. Beside traveling, I enjoy cooking and writing. Cooking for others has become a huge therapeutic outlet for me during the pandemic. While my dinner parties have not extended beyond those who live in my home, it still brings me great joy seeing them eat my creations. I myself am not a picky eater, cooking has made me very open minded when it comes to try things that may seem odd to others. Writing has been a huge hobby of mine since I was in middle school. At the time I was a very shy kid, I rarely talked in school. More times than not, my fellow classmates thought that I was mute. I always found a little enjoyment in shocking everyone when I finally spoke up for the first time. Due to me being quite anti-social I found myself taking to reading and writing. I loved getting lost in a good book, the entire world around me seemed to just disappear. After a while I wanted to challenge myself, reading still brought me great joy but it was becoming a bit repetitive. I remember picking up a pen and an old notebook, completely unsure of what I was even going to write about, yet the second my pen touched paper I found the words flowing out of me. Until this day writing brings me a comfort I could not even begin to describe. I have never allowed anyone to read my work, it has become a nice private “secret” that is all my own. When I’m not partaking in one of my hobbies I enjoy watching television with my husband. Our most recent tv show that we are hooked on is an anime called “Demon Slayer”. Normally I am not really keen on anime, but this show has me absolutely hooked! A show I recently watched by myself was “Bridgerton” on Netflix. I personally would recommend that show to anyone who either enjoyed the series “Gossip Girl” or who enjoys balls and beautiful dresses. I hate to admit that I binge watched the entire season in three days. The most recent movie my husband and I have watched was “The Dirt”, this film is based off of the book “The Heroin Diaries: A year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star” by Nikki Sixx. For those of you who are not familiar with Nikki Sixx, he is the lead singer of the band Motley Crue, a metal band from the 1980’s. The most recent book I have finished was “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”, I am a huge Potterhead, I currently am rereading the entire Harry Potter book series. Why I am choosing to put reread such a length series is truthfully beyond me, but I can already tell I am going to enjoy it like I did the first time around. I truthfully am not a huge fan of video games. The last video game I can recall playing was Pokemon: Leaf Green on my Gameboy advanced. As a kid, my brother and I would play Pokemon together all the time, but I found that as they continued to add new Pokemon, as well as change up the series I grew up loving, I became disinterested in pursuing the games further. Recently I have had a huge case of writer’s block, so as far as creating anything literary I have nothing to report. I have however, been very busy in the kitchen making different soups and stews to combat the cold weather we have been having. My most recent creation was a shoyu ramen from scratch. Unlike traditional shoyu ramen, I did not stick to a complete soy sauce-based brother. To give it a little pizzazz, I added some beef bones and an array of vegetables to make the broth even better. To top it off I added sliced sirloin steak, a marinated soft-boiled egg, green onion and garlic on top. While the noodles were store bought due to not owning a pasta machine, overall the ramen was a hit! While ramen is one of my top five favorite foods, if I had to choose one meal to eat for my last meal on earth it would be authentic Mexican tacos. I would eat tacos all day every day if I could! If you have made it this far, thank you for reading my first ever blog post. I look forward to reading each and every one of your posts and getting to know you all better throughout this semester.
I wanted to include some photographs from my time in Japan. I would love to one day live there again, Okinawa will forever be home to me. The first photo is of my husbands R32 GTR, the car scene was phenomenal over there. The second is of a crepe in the popular American Village/ Chatan area. The last photo is of me at a hidden beach some friends and I found when we were out exploring. The third and forth were during a trip to Osaka during Sakura (cherry blossom) season. We managed to also visit the Shitennoji Temple, which was by far one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.

DO IT
Prompt: Christian Marclay 1995
"Tear out this page while listening attentively listen and crumple the page into a small ball you can. Repeat these sounds with other pages save the ball(s) discard the book."
We randomly chose to work with Christian Marclay’s instructions and every member in the group contributed ideas for it. I thought it was a good idea to do it in video form because it reminded me of ASMR videos as the assignment was focused on portraying the sounds of the paper breaking and crumpling it. In addition, making a video was convenient as we took advantage of editing clips to be in slow or fast motion which alters the sounds the paper makes. I personally liked it, it was interesting to come up with ways to break the paper to create different sounds.

Through living a life comprised of the constant devouring of endless songs, albums, EP’s, lyrics, and poems, choosing my favorite songs would be much similar to asking a parent to choose their favorite child. However, there are still certainly songs which have spoken to me in more levels than one. These five songs, which have never failed to unleash my mind into a separate psychological realm, include: “Heart in a Cage” by the Strokes, “Good Vibrations” by the Beach Boys, “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” by Lou Reed, “Dope on a Rope” by the Growlers, and “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls. "Heart in a Cage" to me is a song which relates to the Holden Caulfield within every one of us. That demon beneath the skin which is everything you hate but in many ways everything that you are and wish not to be. The Strokes evoke an immense understanding of what it means to be an outcast who is refusing the company of others while still screaming out for help from anyone and everyone on the inside as demonstrated by lyrics such as "I don't want what you want- I don't feel what you feel." It is through these poetic lyrics that the Strokes have and always will cement themselves as my all time favorite band. In a lighter note however songs such as "Good Vibrations" remind me of the vast beauty of the world. When I listen to this song I am plucked from the present and dropped back into a more simple time. A time when I was no more than six years old, vacationing with my family in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. With my toes in a hot tub and a virgin Pina Colada in my hand life made sense to me in ways that I wish I could grasp as easily today. Likewise, "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" represent what is good and enticing about changing with age. The whole message of course does stand within its very title and because of this all listeners, including myself, are encouraged to step into the vast unknown. To try what you've always been afraid of trying, eat the sweet fruits of life until your stomach is full and of course take a nice long nap afterwards; whatever makes you happy. The Growler's "Dope on a Rope" is a song that speaks to me in a largely unique way when contrasted with the others placed on this list. Many would claim that the central idea of the song would be fleeting time through lyrics such as "Everything changes when the last call light shines," however to me it is something much different. To me, the song is of new beginnings, getting what you want out of life and as a result living life to the fullest. The Growlers are a rather new friend in the timeline of my life, but have quickly rose the ranks. I was extremely lucky to have seen them at the Brooklyn Steel on my eighteenth birthday and it is incredibly easy to say that it was one of the most surreal and profound experiences I have yet to come across in my short time on Earth. Lastly “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls is by far the most peculiar member to this list and certainly is not written by one of my favorite bands but it is in right by far the most meaningful. When I was a child, when the winds howled, the thunder growled, and the branches were witches claws scratching at my bedroom window I would run to my parents bedroom and cuddle tight to Mom. She would hold me and run her fingers through my hair and ask if I wanted her to sing “the song,” to which I always replied “yes.” “Iris” is my safety net even today. When anxiety strikes, or even if I feel just particularly stressed and far from home, I put on this song and it lets me know that everything is and always will be alright.

My First Day!
So, class was cancelled on Thursday because the teacher was sick, so my first day was pushed back to Friday. This was both disappointing and lucky, I was so excited to start my journey, but I was also exhausted from a long week at work and a weekend of drinking before that. So how did my first day go? I loved every moment!

I made a small group of friends who I sat with during our break and talked with, they are all mature students as well and have jobs and children. They were just as excited as me when we were given our first assignment (I was very worried I was going to be the nerd of the class because of how enthusiastic I was about getting work)
We didn’t do any science, only went through housekeeping and outlines of the course but it was so fun being in a room with Bunsen burners again. Also, they have a really fancy gigantic television which works as a projector and I was amazed when my teacher skipped to the next slide by waving her hand at it.
Our first assignment was to write 1000 words about our future career plans. I have just finished it and it was so much harder than I remember essay writing to be. It wasn’t so bad once I’d outlined the requirements and bullet pointed my responses but looking at a blank page was daunting. Honestly once that was laid out and I’d had a good nights sleep it was easy to flesh it out and make it coherent.
During our induction we were told we would need to get our own lab coats, they have some that can be handed out but they’re covered with drawings of dicks and have chemical stains on them. Either way I was ridiculously excited to get my own lab coat – I’d look like a proper scientist; I could get my name embroidered onto it. It was the first thing I did when I got out of college. Now I’ve done all my work I just need to wait for next Thursday to see what I need to read for Cell Biology. I can’t wait to be a crazy scientist!

#doit #firstassignment #2d2024

In this prompt, it was to walk around and stop to smile at a stranger. My group and I initially chose this prompt because it sounded like a fun idea. Doing this prompt was a fun experience because smiling at a stranger is a way of showing kindness, and the stranger's reaction was hilarious because they were perplexed as to why a group of people just stood there and smiled at them while recording them. This prompt was supposed to create a positive experience for the stranger, but it ended up just being a funny and awkward situation for them.

First Assignment of Data Management and Visualization
Step 1: Choose a dataset
After looking through the GapMinder Codebook, I have have decided that I am particularly interested in “Child Employment”.
Step 2: Identify a specific topic of interest
I want to explore the association between gender and child employment in the agricultural sector.
Research Question: What is the correlation between gender and child employment in agriculture?
Step 3: Prepare a codebook of your own (i.e., print individual pages or copy screen and paste into a new document) from the larger codebook that includes the questions/items/variables that measure your selected topics.)
I selected the following variables on the codebook-
According to the codebook it can be seen that, the data shows the percentage of different countries boys and girls engaged in agriculture from 1998 to 2014.
Step 4: Identify another specific topic of interest
The second topic i want to explore is the child employment in agricultural sector.
Research Question: How agriculture is associated with child employment?
Step 5: Add questions/items/variables documenting this second topic to your personal codebook.
I selected the following variables on the codebook-
Step 6: Literature Review
A short investigation on the internet immediately show many studies about the topic at hand.

Child employment is associated with agriculture from primitive times. In the father’s farm, son’s work is a daily occurrence in the villages. These children and their families give less important to education than work. As a result, children get engaged in work at an early age.
Step 7: Based on your literature review, develop a hypothesis about what you believe the association might be between these topics.
My assumption is:
Due to lineage, children have to be involved in agriculture. But the rate of involvement in agriculture is lower for girls than in boys.

Nice To Meet You!
As generic as is may sound, my name is Kyle Smith. Not to be confused with John Doe, as my parents like to play cruel and usual jokes. If I’m not working, I’m probably on my laptop making beats. I’d like to consider myself a Hip-Hop head while I constantly study other genres of music. Proud of my heritage and nationality being Bahamian & Jamaican. I perceive myself to be adventurous with a growing passion to travel and absorb different cultures. I am #TeamXbox when it comes to video games so my opinion will be bias. Growing up in my era, I've seen major developments of the world wide web and always had an interest on finding out how it functioned.
