Capes tend to be a pretty common garment worn by the “professional” heroes of the Flamesea Universe, at least in part due to the members of the early Solstar Squadron (one of the “original” pro hero teams) popularizing the look. As a result of the garment’s prominence, a lot goes into what a cape represents for the hero wearing it.
Wearing a cape demonstrates that a hero is going to face their foes head-on and without faltering, as turning away from their foe would leave them susceptible to getting their cape pulled and used against them.
As the length of the garment influences how easily it might be used against a hero, those with more experience will have longer capes.
While not as common of a use, the color of a cape (and costume by extension) may serve as a symbol of a hero’s confidence in battle. Specifically, brighter and flashier capes can draw attention to the hero, attracting conflict, and capes that are lighter in tone or even pure white may demonstrate a hero’s confidence in not “getting their hands dirty” through a long or strenuous combat encounter.
Some heroes might remove their capes before combat, and this can usually be read as them being more willing to fight dirty or in unorthodox ways.

Aegis
(Finally going to start posting my superhero OCs! Welcome to the Flamesea Project.)
Real Name: Ka’list Gale-li (Jovian), Calista Galindo (Human)
Age: 35
Species/Race: Human/Jovian Hybrid, Latin American
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Lesbian
History:
Cali was born as a human, but her early childhood would be completely turned around when her family was killed during an alien skirmish on earth. In the process of the attack, Cali would be enveloped by a burst of warp drive energy (known as flamesea energy in-universe) from a destroyed ship- resulting in her gaining extremely unstable and sporadic powers. The Jovian survivors of the battle, out of sorrow for the situation, elected to raise Cali. During her new upbringing, Cali had her DNA spliced with the aliens that adopted her in order to calm her instability- said DNA splicing would give her the powers she has today. Once she came of age, she would return to earth and protect it, ultimately becoming one of its greatest heroes.
Personality:
Cali is a showboat during combat, often goading her enemies or boasting during the fight, or using her weather powers to "set the stage" for herself. This partially comes from her major paragon complex, but also from a desire to divert as much of the fight away from other people as much as people- even other heroes she works with.
While off the job, Aegis tends to not stay in one place for long- usually looking for new places to eat or simply relax and take in the world around her. In spite of her showmanship, she doesn’t tend to interact with regular people that often, which makes it harder to develop relationships outside of her already existing friend group.
Powers:
Enhanced physical prowess- Cali is far stronger than the average human, being strong enough to lift many times her own weight, and being tough enough to sustain and resist far more damage than the average human.
Weather Manipulation- By far one of Cali’s most impressive abilities, The hero has a near complete control over weather phenomena. Not only can she call storms and localized changes to the weather during combat, but she can also manipulate and bend certain aspects of this weather to her will, such as-
Vacuum punches- Aegis can create pockets of vacuums to enhance the power of her punches, similar to a mantis shrimp. This means that her punches can be made far more explosive and striking.
Flight through wind manipulation- Cali is capable of manipulating the wind in order to fly- in conjunction with her cape and stormeye. She also uses the wind for dramatic effect and presentation, causing her cape to billow when she desires it.
Lightning casting- Aegis can call lightning into a specific area to strike a target. She can also strike herself with lightning, if for some reason she needs the extra volts for any reason- whether it be to “power up” by conducting electricity through herself, or to shake off an enemy who might be grappling or attacking her.
Equipment:
Stormeye- This device was created by Cali’s surrogate parents to allow her to fly in the same way they do- emulating their biology to harness the wind which Cali manipulates. The device alone doesn’t fully allow this, however, and thus Cali also relies on her costume’s cape to help the process- an addition that was her suggestion based on the heroes from earth she remembered. In order to allow for this, of course, the cape has to be rather long, somewhat emulating the fins of the alien species.

Thinking about if I should make Aegis a reporter or something, but with a twist
She's already sort of the superman of my world, and so it could be a funny little Clark Kent reference, but I'm wondering if it could be fun to make it so that she reports the news while doing superhero stuff
As in, her hero persona is the news reporter, and since she can control the weather and fly and stuff she can go high up for better coverage and all that and maybe even predict the weather a bit better
This is kind of based on a random idea I had of "how do superheroes in my universe make money" and the concept of like. What if their actual jobs were incorporated into their hero work

Venatrix
(Another one of my heroines! This one is the main character of the setting's story.)
Real Name: Anna Harker
Age: 23
Species/Race: Human, White with some mixed heritage
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Backstory:
Anna comes from a monster hunting family that has been in operation for quite some time- having gotten their start when her great grandparents first killed a powerful vampire lord in the 1890s. However, with the onset of the modern age and the growth of many new and far more dangerous creatures, Anna struggled to keep up. This would eventually culminate in Anna going through a near-death experience during one of her hunts- only saved by the hero Aegis. Inspired by the event, Anna would make it her goal to become a hero.
Looking for help from the descendant of a mad scientist her family had fought years ago, Anna obtained a device that would essentially serve as a conduit to give her powers. So, tracking Aegis to a fight with another monster, Anna would wear the device and, according to her plan, get struck by one of Aegis’ created lightning bolts. Waking up in the hospital an hour later, Anna had obtained the power to generate and manipulate electricity. With her new powers, she would become a hero and conduct her family’s business as usual- unaware of what new monsters awaited her.
Personality:
Anna is often the first one to act in any given situation, whether it be combat-oriented or social. This often makes her appear as rather reckless, which isn’t entirely incorrect. Anna is prone to getting in over her head when it comes to her hunts, and thus may not always come out of them with a concrete victory. Still, she’s more than willing to learn from her past failures and investigate the monsters she comes back from to develop new strategies for her hunts.
Anna also tends to be rather judgemental of herself- mostly because she wants to live up to her family’s legacy the best that she can. She’s always pushing to improve herself as a result, sometimes going as far as to overexert herself or neglect her own needs in certain situations.
Powers:
Living Battery- by way of the “accident” that caused her to gain her powers, Anna is able to carry a significantly high amount of energy within herself- energy that can be discharged in the form of electricity. She’s capable of manipulating this electricity in rather interesting ways, giving it a wide range of utility during fights.
Technology manipulation- through her electricity manipulation, Anna is able to manipulate the mechanisms of her own equipment.
Equipment:
Crossbows- Anna carries two crossbows with her as a hero, keeping them folded up and attached to her gauntlets when not in use. She also carries a supply of arrows to fire with them. Her bows use a special mechanism- a magnetic wheel- that allows them to be reloaded without her having to do so manually. Instead, she simply magnetizes the wheel through the use of her electricity manipulation abilities.
Traps- Anna carries devices akin to bear traps with her while hunting monsters. These are equipped with batteries that allow the traps to shock and incapacitate their prey. She usually has one or two of these on her at a time.
Grappling hook- Along with her arrows, Anna carries a grappling hook that can be equipped to and fired from her crossbows.

Due to the more treacherous nature of wearing capes, as well as a number of early incidents where heroes were harmed or negatively impacted by capes during combat, it’s common to see heroes wear removable capes to prevent them from being effectively used against them. Beyond this practicality, removable capes became popular for their effectiveness in rescue missions, as they could be used for impromptu slings, shock blankets, bandages, and other similar equipment.
