Is A Sending Card Always Necessary on the LED Screen?
Tumblr media
LED displays are now very well-known and widely used with audiences engaging on big screens in stadiums, billboards, and sometimes, street art. But, there appears to be a myriad of parts that are clustered together for it to work in unison. One of these components which is the sending card has in the past been crucial in the running of the LED screen. However, with advancements in technology, the question arises is a sending card always necessary?
The Sending Card: A Crucial “Translator”
In most LED displays, the sending cards act as a bridge between the content source (like a computer) and the LED screen itself. It receives the video signal (HDMI, DIV, etc.) and translates it into a format the screen can understand. This involves processing the data, splitting it into individual pixel information, and synchronizing the output to ensure a clear and cohesive image on the screen.
Advantages of Streamlining the System
Companies like Kystar, a leading innovator in LED technology, are pursuing the boundaries by developing systems that can potentially eliminate the need for dedicated sending cards. Through advancements in computer processing power and software optimization, these systems can handle the conversion task directly within the computer itself. This can offer several advantages:
SimplifiedSetup: Eliminating the sending card reduces one component in the system, streamlining the setup process for users.
CostReduction: By removing the need for a separate hardware component, the overall cost of the LED display system can potentially decrease.
EnhancedFlexibility: Integrating the sending function into the computer allows for greater flexibility in terms of content management and display options.
When is a Sending Card Still Relevent?
While the potential to bypass sending cards exists, their role remains valuable in certain scenarios.  Here is when a sending card might still be the preferred choice:
ComplexDisplays: For intricate LED setups with high-resolution screens or multiple connected panels, a dedicated sending card can offer better processing power and ensure smooth, synchronized visuals.
LegacySystems: For existing LED displays that rely on older technology, a sending card might be necessary for proper compatibility and functioning.
Advancedfeatures: Some sending cards offer advanced features like scaling, colour correction, and scheduling functionalities, which might not be readily available through a computer alone.
At Eager LED, we offer a comprehensive range of LED display solutions, including options with and without dedicated sending cards. Our knowledgeable team can help you enhance your specific needs and recommend the optimal configuration for your project.

this was supposed to be a ramble post but i went on and on ;-; i might fw this idea some more in the future! tried to be as eloquent as possible but failed
royal au, crown prince!gojo satoru, f!reader (she/her), you reject him but that ain’t stopping the king to be from pursuing you, wc: 1.5k
Tumblr media
crown prince gojo satoru, predictably, was the most desired man in the kingdom.
along with his royal heritage — the simple fact of being the next in line to the throne — his highness was undeniably a well-favored, handsome man that no other could hold a candle to. naturally, ladies would often throw themselves at him — some charmed by power, others harboring genuine feelings. he could see through them all and he would politely, and sometimes not so — depending on the intention — would turn them down.
his highness found no thrill in the concept of love. he saw no challenge in it and in someone dolling up for him and speaking to him of all the things that he, supposedly, wanted to hear. he deemed it boring. thus, he’d often sneak out of the castle (jumping off his balcony, unharmed) when the ladies arrived to visit him. other times he’d send the servants to deliver the unfortunate (and very much untrue) news of his highness being sick and needing rest to recuperate his strength. he truly could not be bothered while there were other things that piqued his interest more.
the battlefield, he admired it.
he grew up as — what others considered — a problematic child. ditching etiquette lessons to go into the forest and climb the trees, hunt animals and pick up branches to practice swordsmanship by himself. other times he’d simply act up in inappropriate ways, purposely so, that would inevitably bring punishment upon him, resulting in him being locked in his room to reflect on the unfitting of a royal behavior he displayed that day.
yet, nobody knew how agile and flexible he was, that he had learned how to climb and land safely after jumping from dangerous heights.
hence why, to this day, his highness uses his balcony as an exit when faced with unwanted guests. and to this day, nobody knows to where the crown prince has perished when the noble ladies line up in the castle to meet him.
truly, a problematic man.
his father, the king, was not having it. he thought, maybe, if he were to actually send his son the battlefield in order for him to come face to face with the harsh truth of it, that it was not as the fairy tales told so, that it was bloody, merciless and brutal, filled with death and decaying corpses — he would, maybe, come to his senses.
but, unfortunately so, that did not do it.
so far, everything was going the way the crown prince had desired — he had learned, early on, how to manipulate his environment to get what he wanted, through mischief. he had become a self-taught knight by his own means. he had caused enough havoc in order to be sent away to the most desired of places he wanted to be. the battlefield.
he conquered lands. each time he returned to the royal capital, he brought victory.
the neighboring countries were growing wary, avoiding conflicts and easily agreeing and bowing to the demands of the kingdom in order to prevent wars from breaking. the army’s strength, led by none other than the crown prince gojo satoru, was unheard of.
soon, the entire world knew of it. the clashes and conflicts seized. nobody dared oppose the kingdom anymore.
the prince returned to the capital, back to his boring days.
the days once filled with dull etiquette and history lessons were now replaced with the constant nagging to review a list of candidates in order to pick a bride to be the next crown princess.
it was a bothersome activity. his only challenge now was finding new excuses every day to avoid it.
but alas, there was only as much he could do to run away from his royal responsibilities of continuing the bloodline.
it was after the king had threatened to have the head of his right arm in combat and best friend, the glorious knight geto suguru, that the crown prince caved and considered looking at the portraits of the candidates presented to him.
in front of him were a list of the big families and the portraits of their daughters sent in.
“say, suguru”, satoru lifts a curious brow. “the lady of this house”, he points at the paper, “i can’t see her portrait”
suguru chuckles. “i am afraid, she did not send in one”
the prince scrunches up his nose. thinking. “i don’t understand?”
suguru, covering his mouth, tries to hold his laugh back. “she did not send in a portrait”
“did she forget?”
“i don’t think so”
“then? why?”, satoru stares. clueless.
suguru, with his entire willpower, is earnestly trying to fight the laughter climbing up his throat. the crown prince might be his best friend, but he didn’t really know how this man would react when faced with rejection for the first time in his life.
“in my humble knowledge”, he clears his throat before continuing, “when a lady refuses to send in a portrait to the royal palace, it only means she is politely withdrawing from the list of the candidates, your highness”
silence.
and then, a stretch — of lips, into a smile. a smile of disbelief. one that resembles the smile he shows when faced with a challenge on the battlefield that his audacious opponents throw at him.
“is she rejecting me?”
“i am afraid so”
intriguing. it’s been too long since he felt that kind of thrill, and to think he’d experience it while flipping through mere portraits of his wife-to-be’s. perhaps, he should’ve listened to his father sooner, huh?
he chuckles to himself. “good. i want her”
from that day on, the crown prince, who was once apathetic and uninterested in banquets held by the nobles, attended every one of them that was rumored to have you as a guest.
sadly, you rarely showed up. during the times you were present, you obviated his approach in a crafty and tactful manner.
he started sending you gifts — luxury gems and stones, hairpins, foreign cloths and dresses that were considered hard to obtain even by the big noble families. you sent them all back to the royal palace.
but unfortunately to you and very fortunately to the crown prince, this uncourteous gesture of yours intrigued him even further. he already had a hunch from your previous encounters, that you were not one to be bound by etiquettes of high society nor were you one to be easily blinded by opulence. but just in case, he wanted to test you. he wanted to see more of your deviant nature.
yet, he almost felt defeated, ashamed of taking you so lightly — as if tarnishing and trampling on your character — every time upon seeing the gifts delivered back to him in the same state that he had sent them, unpacked. not even touched out of curiosity. spotless as they were — as a sign of unambiguous rejection.
maybe, he shouldn’t have acted so carelessly with you.
it was during a banquet hosted by the royal palace in honor of the visiting diplomats from the neighboring countries when satoru finally got the chance to strike a more private conversation with you.
eyes glued to you all night, watching as you danced and socialized with other nobles, he was waiting for the right moment to approach you.
and just as you happened to leave the ballroom and walk toward the balcony to catch some fresh air, he excused himself and followed behind you.
“don’t tell me you’re already bored and want to leave, my lady?”
you turn around, visibly unfazed by his presence.
“good evening, your highness”, you politely greet, bobbing a curtsy to him. “although it is not to my liking, i wouldn’t call such a fancy banquet objectively boring. i was merely getting some fresh air after dancing”
there she goes again with that witty tongue of hers, he chuckles. “i see. you find it subjectively boring, if i may assume?”
“you may and that wouldn’t be far from the truth”
he lets out another chuckle, wiping a hand across his face as if at a loss of words. you truly are one intriguing woman.
“i will be very frank with you, my lady”, he speaks. “i think, i might’ve fallen for you”
you remain unamused, not even a single feature on your face flinching at his very confession.
“love is not something you think, but rather something you feel, your highness. curiosity, on the other hand, might pick at your brain and make you think and ponder”
he chuckles. “they’re not mutually exclusive, i believe. can’t love start from curiosity?”
you crack a soft smile. “perhaps”
“may i assume this is you giving me permission to pursue you further?”
“excuse my impertinence, your highness, but — do you have a thing for getting rejected?”, you tilt your head, an impish grin on your lips. “how long are you going to keep this up for?”
he steps closer, “i promise i’ll stop”, taking your hand into his and courteously going down on one knee before kissing it — “when you stop rejecting me, my lady”

Tumblr media
In this scene, they are in the middle of the woods under a canopy of trees. They show the sky and there is no moon.
The light has absolutely no motivation.
Motivated lighting is a philosophy where all of the light sources on screen have a logical source. The light from a smartphone on someone's face. A lamp next to the couch. Sterile overhead office lights.
Often filmmakers will still use their own custom light sources, but they will simulate these things to give the impression the light has motivation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Compare this to when all they really had were bright spotlights and insensitive film. An indoor scene just couldn't have this warm and cozy feel. And the light was just blasted in from everywhere.
Tumblr media
Black and white helped a lot. You could still get dramatic effect despite things needing to be overlit. Or you could play with contrast ratios and shadow.
Tumblr media
All the stuff you need to see was very bright and exposed well onto film and all the stuff you didn't was very dark.
But there was no graduation in between. It was hard to be subtle.
And when television and movies went color, this black and white contrast advantage was lost.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see EVERYTHING. And look at those sharp shadows. Everyone is just being blasted in the face with lights.
This sitcom lighting persisted long past when it was necessary. It became part of the sitcom language.
I think M*A*S*H was one of the first shows to subvert the overlit sitcom aesthetic. They began to play with lighting that had more motivation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But aesthetic standards are hard to kill. And despite the heavy influence of M*A*S*H, sitcoms persisted all the way into the Friends era.
Tumblr media
Her lamp isn't even on. Everything is just lit by God.
I don't think you will see a living room or kitchen scene lit like this very much from here on out.
People are getting used to lighting making more logical sense.
Tumblr media
With the advent of LED lighting that can be any size, shape, and brightness, as well as cameras that can interpret very dark images, modern shows can now use bright and dark as narrative tools.
I think Severance does this well, and still keeps everything properly motivated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this newfound flexibility has created new problems. If you can film dark things, how dark is too dark? And how do you make sure the audience can see all of the important visual information?
The two worst examples of unmotivated lighting are always space helmets and cars.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a conceit. You gotta see the faces so these things are usually forgiven.
But the biggest debate in the realm of unmotivated lighting is night scenes. People have lots of opinions on how best to use light in the dark.
This is because following a motivated lighting philosophy can be especially tricky. Particularly if your setting is a secluded area without any artificial light sources.
Many cinematographers will try to give some sense of moonlight. But moonlight is very hard to replicate, so the effect usually ends up looking pretty fake.
Tumblr media
This scene during a blackout in Die Hard 4 looks like they took the brightest light they had, mounted it as high as possible and said, "Fuck it, that's moon-ish."
If the DP is hardcore into motivated lighting, they just make the screen really really dark, like the Long Night battle in Game of Thrones.
Tumblr media
The really really dark option bugs a lot of people.
Froggie Tangent about Dark Scenes:
I originally thought people needed to adjust their display settings. But then I realized not everyone watches content in a darkened room like a vampire. But if you find a show or movie is too dark, turning off any room lights will help a lot. Watching it in HDR will also help. And watching it on an OLED will help even more.
Scenes this dark are mostly a fad. DPs are experimenting with the possibilities of new technology. But sometimes they forget not everyone has that technology yet. And they forget some people watch stuff on their phones in a room full of sunlight.
Eventually the fad will fade, we will all adopt better screens, and the darkness will land somehwere between "I can't see shit" and "it would never be that bright in real life."
[End of tangent]
In the olden days, since film wasn't sensitive enough to do scenes in the dark, almost everything needed to have unmotivated lighting just to make sure their film wasn't a grainy mess. And as a culture, we sort of got used to that style. They'd mess with the contrast ratios to give the feeling of night, but if you think about where the light is coming from too hard, it won't make any sense. They took a Broadway theater approach to lighting and so a lot of movies felt like they were on a soundstage.
The 1961 West Side Story is a good example.
Tumblr media
They've got a spot light hitting them, but not the building behind them. I guess that could be an overhead street light. But street lights are meant to flood the area like an ever expanding donut of light. A spotlight is like a directly projected cone of light. It is perfectly pointed at the side of their face and not coming from above.
Tumblr media
She has some magical purple light coming from... somewhere.
Tumblr media
And then they are in an area under a bridge, far away from any lights, but they've got soft fill light with a bright rim coming from the right.
Speilberg's version has much more motivated light.
Tumblr media
This one is a bit of a cheat, some very bright source off in the distance. But it feels more plausible to the brain and gives a better sense of darkness. It feels like some kind of industrial lighting. Or a security light at a junkyard.
Tumblr media
Here he straight up shows you where the light is coming from. And his preference for anamorphic lenses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here he uses bright train lights to create silhouettes. This is clever because it allows everything to be very dark but everyone is still legible in the scene.
I'm torn. Because I study light. And so I am very aware of how shows and movies are lighting things. And unmotivated lighting sticks out in my brain. Like when I watch someone miming playing the guitar. Or using a camera improperly. When you know too much about something, inaccurate onscreen depictions just drive you nuts.
There are some techniques being experimented with to make night scenes more legible while maintaining lighting realism. I think the most promising is the infrared day-for-night process used in Nope.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But maybe it doesn't need to be solved. Maybe DPs should just light the night even if it doesn't always make sense. Maybe general audiences just do not care and I am a big nerd who should be ignored.

MG 1/100 Gjallarhorn Arianrhod Fleet Unit No. 21 Gundam Frame ASW-G-XX "Gundam Vidar"
It's done!! After completing the frame last week, adding all of the surface armour and acessories went quite smoothly. I'd already weathered and prepped everything, but even then I had to move quite quickly to get it done during the build meet I was at.
The Vidar is a disguised and revamped Gundam Kimaris Trooper, incorporating new technology and armour onto the ancient Kimaris frame, including a 3rd Ahab Reactor (done in a really nice trans-pink), knee thrusters, and these really nice rapier sheaths on the skirt armour.
Tumblr media
Being a modern Master Grade kit, it comes colour separated from the get go, with a complete inner frame that peaks through the multi-layered armour plates. The Iron Blooded Orphans MGs in particular seem to show off a lot of the inner frame, so I'm happy I took the extra time to weather and detail it, although a lot of the frame marking stickers did get covered completely.
The colours chosen for the kit are really nice, especially the almost lavender blue that makes up the majority of the armour panels and contrasts really well with the bright pink marking stickers. I had a lot of fun with these - there are far fewer than on a RG kit, and they're nice and big so they're easy to apply. I even added a few extras, including the Bauduin family crest on the shoulder and cockpit. There's also some really nice shiny gold and chrome pieces for the frame.
There wasn't much for me to do in terms of further detail, apart from panel lining. I used both a liquid enamel liner as well as felt tip to touch up any mistakes. For some of the black armour panel pieces, I also experimented using a light grey liner, to give them some extra contrast, as black can tend to get lost and look like it isn't there at all. I've seen people do this on aircraft and it usually looks quite good, and I think it gave a few of the armour pieces a really nice worn metallic effect.
Tumblr media
I also painted the little pilot figure and added some weathering. For the armour panels, I tried adding some drybrushing to the edges before assembly, helping to accentuate the seams between panels. I tried out a new weathering technique too using a chrome paint marker on a few of the sharp edges, and spreading out the self-leveling paint using a q-tip. This added some super shiny worn edges that catch the light and add a bit of textural variation over the matte finish.
Tumblr media
A neat feature of this kit are the eyes and rear camera. They're moulded as a single hidden trans-pink piece that's also UV reactive, so you can make them light up both by shining UV or blue light on them, as well as placing a light source behind the head. Unfortunately there's no room in the head for an LED, although you could probably hollow it out to fit one in, and hide the battery in the backpack.
Tumblr media
This kit is super poseable, with nicely designed joints that aren't difficult to move but are decently stiff and can hold themselves in place. Apparently the hips have been redesigned from the original MG Barbatos, although I still found them a little looser than I would've liked.
Tumblr media
There's a decent number of gimmicks for this kit, as well as weapons and option parts. The feet include the fold-out "Hunter's Edge", which is partially missing on the HG version.
Tumblr media
There's a few gimmicks included on the side-skirt/sheaths. There's two small verniers that swing outwards, and a little extra joint piece to let you move the skirt around for more flexible poses. The sheaths include 6 replaceable blades for the rapier, as well as the handle, and you can recreate the "reloading" action by sliding the entire sheath down, which actually pulls out a single blade attached to the handle.
Tumblr media
There are also 2 extra "detached" blades, representing used blades that have been deposited as explosives in another mobile suit (although there's not really anything to attach them to for display, until Bandai releases more MG IBO kits).
One of the coolest parts of this kit are the twin pistols hidden in the front skirt. The holster gimmick can be a little finnicky when replacing the pistols, but they're held there securely when in place. The pistols themselves are nicely recreated, and you can even rack the slide of each one!
Tumblr media
Finally, there's the large 110mm rifle. This has little tabs that slot in to a few holes on either side of the skirt, and an aiming camera in trans-pink that even has a foil sticker behind it to make it stand out. The rifle was always the funniest aspect of this suit to me, as it's clearly IBO's homage to the RX-78-2 beam rifle, and yet it's used by a suit that shows up as a transitional form in like 3 episodes and it gets fired once.
Tumblr media
It's still undeniably one of the coolest parts of the kit, and it even has a removable magazine, although the part lacks a catch and so can be removed a little too easily. I wish it had had an actuating bolt as well, although it didn't really have one in the show.
Alongside all the weapons are a few hand options for holding the weapons. The hands are rather nicely done, with only a single hand that needs to be built, alongside a single moveable thumb. Instead, you switch out the fingers, between a pre-posed left and right pistol grip, open fist, closed fist, or open hand. This was much more preferable to working with the poseable hands I've seen on other MG kits. I still have sour memories of the fiddly poseable hands from the RG kits. The removable fingers also make it easier to swap out weapons for posing, and there's a little slot in each hand that clips into the weapons to hold them securely.
Overall, the MG Vidar was an excellent introduction to proper MG kits, and I'm really tempted to pick up the upcoming MG Barbatos Lupus in August.
