yes, 100% always! i don't have specific "drawing music" though, i just listen to whatever i listen to at the moment anyway. i once made a playlist with a super random selection of songs i listen/have listened to that might be a good indication of how truly random it is haha

What Is 30 Below?

On April 23rd, 1994, a certain television movie aired in Canada. The rest is 30 years of amazing, rich and lovely history — still going in 2024.

30 below is a fest to celebrate this anniversary, run by @flownwrong. Whether you’ve been here from the get-go or just joining the fun — this fest is for you. Let’s spread the love for the wonder that is due South!

🐢each of 7 weeks will have a theme, complete with prompts to help you get going; themes will go up on February 18th

🐢this event accepts any contributions:

all fanworks: meta, art, gifsets, photo or video edits, fanmixes, fic, rec lists… anything you feel inspired to create!

I just happened to notice that a lot of sex pollen stories didn't really have a lot of sex scenes in them. What was I to do? This story is more like a sex sampler from my ancestor in smut. I want you to picture the figures picked out with her best backstitch and every i dotted with a French knot. Thanks the Escapade Discord, especially Greenygal, for thoughts on Dief, which inspired some stuff that may not be very visible in the final draft but was highly significant as underpinning. Timestamp Roulette Art Challenge!

It occurred to me the other day to do the timestamp roulette, but with pencil sketches instead of gifs. Since this is, as @flownwrong (EDIT: @sammaggs!) pointed out on discord, an analog version of the gif roulette, I decided to go as analog I can without actually purchasing any VHS tapes: from now on, I'll pick my episode minutes with this toy roulette from my childhood. :D (The numbers only go up to 36, so I'll use the dice to get to the last fifth of the eps sometimes.) 

I really have no big plan here, but I'm thinking I try to follow the due South stacked rewatch we're doing on discord, which just started with Burning Down the House (aired on September 14th, 1997). Here are my quickie sketches from minutes 4, 28, 31, 35 and 39 of that episode. I picked one screenshot (or detail) from each minute and tried to make a one-page composition of them all. Goodness knows I can use the practise this challenge provides, as I haven't drawn much by hand since I moved on to making digital fanworks nearly 20 years ago.

Feel free to join the challenge, in whatever manner feels comfortable for you (free schedule, traditional/digital, any number of sketches, posting them here or not - no pressure!). As Bob says in BDtH, "Something good might come of it." At least, more art!

last book: i just finished reading girl parts by john cusick which was interesting but not actually good 😭 it had a lot of things it could have said but instead said nothing. but it was my first finished book in 2025 and i polished it off in less than two hours so it's nice to know that not opening a book for like six months didn't actually stunt my reading speed or my critical thinking skills ❤️‍🔥

last movie: i saw nosferatu in theatres and i wish i liked it more. for valentine's day me and the boyfriend were hanging with two of our friends and we watched half of i love you, man before we gave up and went out to a bar where a creed/kings of leon cover band was playing. and then i got sick 😞

last show: supernatural 🙏 but outside of trying to catch up to the @spn20rewatch i re-watched season one of dexter and lost it all over again

last thing i searched: "why do restaurants serve beets"

Last song: Take a Walk by Passion Pit. Definitely feeling a bit nostalgic for high school summers

Last film: Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). I've had a bit of a marvel kick recently (more high school nostalgia) and I've been in the mood to see my favorite avenger. And I've got to say, this is one of my movies that I think actually holds up.

Last book: Everything is Tuerculosis by John Green. I've been a bit slow this year in reading (life, you know) but I grabbed the audiobook for this and finished it in like a day. Does this also count as high school nostalgia if I was a big nerdfighter then?

Last TV show: That I finished? The Pitt. Amazing, everything I hoped it would be and more. But TV I was casually watching? Mid-90s Law and Order with Benjamin Bratt.

Sweet/savory/spicy: Mildly sweet. Iced coffee sweet.

Movie thoughts under the cut:

1) I ’m thinking of ending things was the first movie I watched this year and I truly adored it. It was brilliantly written and featured some powerhouse performances. I read the book immediately after finishing, and while the book and movie have some key differences, I think the film was a phenomenal act of translation. Both left me with the bone deep chill of an intricate, sick dream and I found it difficult to shake.

2) persuasion is great! I also read the book after finishing and it quickly became my favorite Austen. Hard to beat second chances at love.

3) Dracula 2000 is an unsung classic. Dracula is revealed to be Judas iscariot. 10/10 no notes

4) You complain about a life that YOU chose. You are not a victim. Not at all. Your generosity conceals something dirtier and meaner. You're incapable of facing your ambitions and you resent me for it, but I'm not the one who put you where you are. I had nothing to do with it! You're not sacrificing yourself as you say. You choose to sit on the sidelines because you're afraid! Your pride makes your head explode before you can even come up with a germ of an idea! You wake up at 40 needing someone to blame. You're the one to blame! You're petrified by your own fucking standards and your fear of failure! This is the truth!

5) a triumphant testament to the enduring and indefatigable soul of the himejoshi. I love any movie that is written and directed like a play. I cried watching it and then also like a week later in the shower thinking about it

6) BRILLIANT FILM. Hands down the best horror I saw this year. La Llorona weaves the personal and the historical seamlessly. Deeply haunting and shockingly cathartic. A must see for anyone who cares about horror, history, or justice.

7) WHAT IS THERE TO SAY THAT HASNT BEEN SAID. A dirty gut punch of a film. This movie sat me down and made me confront some important things in myself that I had been avoiding. I’ve never seen dysphoria depicted in such a raw, honest, and unflinching way. I tend to agree with the director’s takeaway—this isn’t a cautionary tale, rather a brutal (but deftly crafted!) examination of what transition can mean. This movie made me write a chapbook. This is cheating bc the film did come out this year but I wanted to talk about it

8) if I haven’t texted you directly about this movie count your blessings. I need a lawyer present to discuss it. Honestly just message me about it I’ve got a minimum of 5 paragraphs locked and loaded.

9) i also watched this movie for the first time this year! After we watched it my friends and I spent a solid 20 minutes bemoaning the death of color and film. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like it before. What a gory, decadent gem of a film.
