Review : The Suicide Squad (2021)

How we got here was quite the fascinating journey… perhaps we could write an entire blog entry about it, but the long and short of it can be boiled down into two separate events.  Initially, the 2016 attempt at a Suicide Squad film was released to a resoundingly harsh reception from audiences and critics alike due to its lack of focus, overuse of flashiness and unchecked flare, and most of all, its overall feel of existence as a feature-length trailer.  On the other side of the coin, James Gunn found himself ousted from the MCU fraternity after being targeted for a public cancellation in the wake of turning Guardians of the Galaxy into a household name, and while contemplating the possibility that his career was over, DC called with an opportunity to breath new life into The Suicide Squad.  With only a small handful of characters being strong enough to withstand such a tumultuous journey, the release of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad promises the possibility of redemption for one of the most unique properties in the realm of comic book films, not to mention the hopes of validation for DC Films.

If one were to take all of the best aspects of a film like Mystery Men, keep everything in the positive spectrum and amplify it, not to mention toss in plenty of edge and comically dark stimulus, you’d be approaching what James Gunn was able to pull off with The Suicide Squad.  Gunn is no stranger to exploitation style over the top violence with roles in the development of films like Tromeo and Juliet, Dawn of The Dead, Slither, The Belko Experiment and Super under his belt, and The Suicide Squad finds him getting to tell a misfit ensemble antihero story with no restrictions in terms of what he can depict on the screen, leading to insanity such as Shark-Man ripping someone in half in slow motion (among plenty of other gory and violent surprises).  While there is an overarching story about Project Starfish as the use of a sort of Doomsday Device checkmate and mass mind control mechanism, the mission is mainly a forward momentum point used to give us the highly kinetic interactions between the many broken members of Task Force X.  While the film probably never intended to make any broad political statements, it does make one reflect on the extremely complex nature of Black-Ops tactics and their ability to splinter off in unanticipated directions, be it for better or for worse.

What really makes The Suicide Squad work, as briefly mentioned before, is how the film is a perfect stage for a cast of extremely complex and layered characters to interact with one another, all set against the backdrop of seemingly insurmountable odds and certain death, which brings out the boldest and broadest aspects of each character.  The shining example of this is the wonderful relationship between Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2 : Ratcatcher’s daddy issues mesh perfectly with Bloodsport’s inability to be a proper father, while her heroic ability cuts right to the heart of the one fear a seemingly fearless man has.  Characters like King Shark and Polka-Dot Man are looks into how individuals deal with personal trauma and psychosis on a more personal and relatable scale, with Harley Quinn remaining as the Queen of the unhinged with her larger than life manner.  The Thinker is not only captivated and driven by the sheer psychic power and prowess of Project Starfish, but he is briefly taken in an equal capacity once he realizes the power behind what Ratcatcher 2 can do, which is a subtle demonstration of how power hungry motivations have wandering eyes.  The conflict that arises between Col. Rick Flag and Peacemaker could have easily been a by the numbers affair, but by the time that they butt heads we’ve seen so many shades of both men's’ character that its hard to root solely for one over the other even though we know clearly who we are supposed to be rooting for.  Gunn has a true knack for handling ensemble casts, and with so many moving pieces on the table set by The Suicide Squad, it’s truly a wonder to see how well he manages the cast while giving everyone opportunities to shine.

When it comes to a James Gunn film, there are certain aspects of production that you can count on to be pitch perfect right out the gate.  Gunn understands what visual aspects of comic books (and their characters) are appealing, and more importantly, he knows how to translate that visual stimulation into the world of cinema with his grand cinematography and extremely bold use of color.  Gunn also has an amazing ear for music, opting to use soundtrack cues that punctuate the moments of the narrative they are connected to rather than playing as lowbrow sonic puns.  The way that titles and transitional text cues are integrated into the world of The Suicide Squad is subtle enough to go unnoticed by the untrained eye, but clever enough to feel natural without being distracting to those that are tuned in.  The outfits that Task Force X adorn have a solid balance of almost being over the top while still making sense in terms of both personality and function for those who wear them… I’d also be remiss not to mention the many outfits that Margot Robbie gets to style as Harley Quinn, all of which match the many volatile shades of her personality.  The visual effects in the film are extremely strong as well, be it the over the top stylized violence, the humanoid creations of King Shark and The Weasel, or even little things like the crazy manifestation that is Polka-Dot Man.  The gunplay, combat and stunt work are all executed precisely and within the spirit of the R-rated world of The Suicde Squad, and we even get a wonderfully dysfunctional (albeit it brief) car chase.  Gunn must also be given praise for the way that he is able to present the different skewed ways that characters like Polka-Dot Man and Harley Quinn see the world.

Though not necessarily the centerpoint of the film or the narrative, Margot Robbie is clearly operating on extremely high levels in what is now her third cinematic portrayal of Harley Quinn, stealing many moments in her asides with her ability to display several aspects of her personality in rapid succession and seemingly at will without losing her Bugs Bunny-esque screen presence.  Idris Elba is the personification of turmoil, bringing a jaded outlook and broken spirit into his mix and externalizing it with a stone-like front.  Daniela Melchior gives a breakout, star-making performance as Ratcatcher 2, turning what is normally the stereotypical character of the troubled innocent in league with monster men on its ear with her charm and empathy.  John Cena is all business with his sharply comic toxic masculinity, towing the line set by Amanda Waller in a symbolic portrayal of unchecked American aggression and self-rationalization.  James Kinnaman stands in contrast in his opportunity to correct the character of Col. Rick Flag, tossing aside the over-the-top zealous patriotism for a more humanitarian approach, which in turn makes him much more personable and less of a one note leader.  Peter Capaldi, Viola Davis, David Dastmalchian and Sylvester Stallone all give key supporting performances, while fast and furious appearances from the likes of Pete Davis, Jai Courtney, Michael Rooker, Steve Agee, Nathan Fillion, Taika Waititi, Storm Reid, Sean Gunn and a host of others keep the craziness of The Suicide Squad at max capacity.

While I did have my reservations at the green light announcements of The Suicide Squad as a reboot, I found myself intrigued at how quickly DC scooped up James Gunn and attached him to the project in the wake of the MCU debacle.  Once the trailers hit the scene, however, any doubts I had about the pedigree and possibility of entertainment for this movie were cast aside, and I marked my calendar for the release date.  Props to HBOMax for releasing the film early with no announcements, as it made for a pleasant gateway to the weekend on a long Thursday night.  It will definitely be interesting to see if these few extra hours of exposure have an impact on the already screwy numbers that come with the world of streaming analytics on top of box office data, but one thing is almost certain : The Suicide Squad will sit high among many year-end lists.
