your tags. yeah. it's not that they are progressive or feminist or even written by women -- but they are doing something with women that is complex and worth paying attention to, and in many cases they are the reason we have a version of a particular woman's story at all

yeah that's one of the marketing conceits of the myth retelling novel industrial complex that bothers me, it's the framing as if no one has ever paid attention to these female characters who are buried unnoticed in the myths when often the most complete or the most authoritative version of the character's story that survives from antiquity is in tragedy, a genre that is notoriously interested in bringing female characters out of the house and putting them on stage in active roles, and in using those female characters to explore issues of gender and the place of women in contemporary society.

like to a certain degree it makes sense for the homeric women who don't appear in (extant) tragedy, like briseis or the hanged women in odyssey 22, but we have stories where clytemnestra and deianira and medea insist on make narrative space for themselves to tell their own stories from their own perspectives, refusing to be silent about the violence their society inflicts upon women and the lasting damage it does. they're called aeschylus' agamemnon and sophocles' trachiniae and euripides' medea. and maybe you want to retell those stories for modern audiences, changing things or emphasizing different aspects of them! and that's great! but framing it as if they've been ignored and their stories are as-yet-untold is just not accurate, and it's a cheap way to paint your work as innovative and subversive.

Ok but this little moment at the end of Love and Marriage is part of why I love Piercintyre/Traphawk/Hawktrap/whatever you want to call them. This right here.

For context, this is the end of the episode. All the other characters are off doing other things. There is no in-universe audience. No one is paying any attention to Trapper and Hawkeye at all. And they start doing a bit. Why? Just because. It serves no purpose but for the enjoyment of doing it. And they both slide effortlessly into it - just the ultimate "yes, and" pair. They're riffing, playing along, totally in sync - and it’s just for them! Even the camera loses interest and flips back to the Kwang family and Trapper and Hawkeye are still going! There’s no greater purpose or reason here for the bit, not even a pretext. They’re not trying to annoy someone, or point out a double standard, or make any kind of point at all. They’re just doing it for themselves and totally in it! Like - those are two people built for each other.

Absolute perfection. 10/10 relationship. No notes.

WIP Whenever

I missed last WIP Wed cause I was taking a break from tumblr. Which was very much needed (i'm still not 100% returned). During that time I wrote a lot! :D

[warning: some corpse mutilation] :) As usual, if you see a mistake, no you didn't. And if you're wondering whose fucking corpse, it's a Thalmor dissident. There's not a single good person in this scene, oh wait - I guess the corpse could be considered the only good person 😬 oops

Lilliandra's hands still and her shoulders slump. Giving her mother her fullest attention, she clenches and unclenches her jaw, and says, “Mother, I tire of this. Allow me to finish this first before we get into hypotheticals.” She knows she's running the fine line of being brutally honest and disrespectful now, but her patience has run out. She skipped dinner and easy evening plans to be sitting here, peeling the skin of an unknown mer, answering question after question after fucking question.  Her mother is unamused, but turns her back to Lilliandra, giving unspoken permission to continue the task at hand. Finally. She returns to humming to herself as she works on the hand, exposing the many tendons that sit below the skin. It takes several minutes and rotating the hand this way and that to finally flense the last bit of skin off of flesh. When she finishes, she sets the blade onto the table, returns the now freshly skinned arm back to the mer, and picks up the large sheet of flesh, holding it out in front of herself in admiration of her skill. She likes to think her cutwork is rather smooth, all things considering.  A knock at the door disturbs them. Lilliandra doesn’t care to look who’s bothering until she hears their steps stop behind her and the feel of eyes. It’s unsettling, the hair on the back of her neck rising. With a side glance over her shoulder, she finds annoyingly familiar pale eyes look down at her. She moves her hand to the table and carefully slides her hand over the blade and collects it subtly as she uses the table to support herself. She stands, not out of respect for the mer that joined them, but more to have the upper hand in height. There’s a sense of control regained when it forces him to look up at her.  So she turns and stands there, looking down at Lord Naarifin, a sheet of skin hanging from one hand and an extra sharp blade hidden in the other. She keeps her expression impassive as he looks between her and her obvious work. She’s never liked this mer; she has no specific reason why. She just does.  “I do still stand by my opinion that you’d do well as an interrogator,” his voice monotonous, he speaks his opinion where no one asked.  She hates this is something she can agree with. Between her illusion work and her bladework, she wouldn’t have much issue pulling secrets from victims; it may even be fun. But she simply didn’t care to join this asininity when she could be researching more interesting things. She also didn’t enjoy the company of their young interrogator-in-training. What was his name? She tries to remember as she rotates the blade’s handle in her hand and ignores responding to Naarifin. Over and over the handle turns ― Rellus? No, no. Over and over. Ruliel? Over and over and over. Ruluril? Still not right. You know what? She doesn’t care.  “Lilliandra. You’re free to go,” her mother breaks her train of thought. Though he does a good job hiding it, she can see the way Naarifin’s jaw clenches at her lack of response. She reunites the skin with the corpse, dropping it unceremoniously onto it, but the blade stays in her hand. When she takes a step towards the shorter mer, he does not immediately move out of her way and her mother adds, “Leave the blade please.” She gives a tense smile when he looks to her hand, it’s still turning the handle around. She considers for fun to stab the corpse, but instead throws it onto the table and feels some petty satisfaction when she sees the obsidian chip and break. It’s worthless now. Taking her gloves and leather apron off, she throws them to join the damaged blade and she leaves without a word.

Something I wanted to include in this discussion was really just this photo

Cuz as we know, this is the one where they were able to find the recipe, and also a photo that Lu Guang had apparently been staring into for a long time before declaring the case a lost cause. Which has always seemed kinda strange to me, especially considering that this was the only photo (that they were aware of at the time) where cxs would possess Lin Zhen instead... so you'll have cxs rooting through the fridge and inventories and whatnot but don't even want to try going through the one who actually knows the recipe's phone or apartment or something?

I've seen the idea floating around that maybe Lu Guang repeats stuff in order to aid in Cheng Xiaoshi's character development (or however you'd word that lol), which I do think could potentially be the case (and will probably be a pretty big deal when it comes to our next mission...). As we know, he has let some things play out the exact same as it has even though his knowledge could have sped up the progress, so it's not too crazy to imagine him fabricating a helpless moment so that Cheng Xiaoshi can find a little glimmer of hope in the situation and beat the odds

BUT if that is all true, then I kinda want to know the story behind this picture

Seeing as this one is easily the most helpful photo... is this something they had missed previously that lg let slip through the cracks again in order to give cxs that moment? Or is it possible he hid this photo intentionally to give cxs that moment? Or maybe he didn't even know about this picture bc it was omitted/he missed it last time?

cxs ends up using this photo to get more noodles too, is that the same? Is this the same?

I mean, nothing really important or life-changing happens in this dive anyways (unless you wanna talk about the intelligent management thing I suppose?) so it also wouldn't be too crazy for lg to have secretly allowed cxs to dive in and just pretended to be surprised. Buuuut of course it's also just fun to imagine that cxs is always keeping lg on his toes when it comes to silly little moments like this :3

when people say a historical/literary figure is queer, and especially when there is discourse around that, i don’t think they make it clear enough whether they are approaching the topic according to modern standards of queerness (eg. an ancient greek erastes attracted to a younger eromenos is queer), or according to the figure’s contemporary standards of queerness (eg. a roman man who eats his wife out regularly is queer), or according to both, only calling queer people who are transgressive according to both ancient and modern standards of sexuality (eg. an ancient greek adult man attracted to other adult men is queer). and there is room for consideration for all of these (though personally i don’t use queer in a serious/genuine way to refer to the first option — i’d rather use less politicized words for that) but it’s good to keep the other perspectives in mind

You know what is really getting me about the current moment in the UK? Among all the other things that are really getting me, that is. It's that the trans community is being forced to roll back the arguments we use and leave behind language and battles we were making headway on, and now I read article after article, by trans people, that never even mention the fact that non-binary people a) exist, b) are trans and c) are affected by the whole dealio that's going down.
