So even though this couple, who are illegally keeping a protected native species as a pet, were specifically told they can't make money off Molly the magpie anymore, here they are proudly announcing their animated series:

Lets see more about what this "magical" series is based on, shall we?

A poorly socialised Australia magpie that was stolen from his parents and now cannot leave because he gets attacked by other magpies. Australian magpies are intensely territorial and Molly has no flock - he was taken from a park away from where their home is. Of course, after this attack on him, there's no mention of taking him to the vet or anything?

But it's all about the ~relationship~ between Molly and the family dogs, right? Never mind these are backyard bred staffies that absolutely could kill this bird with one bite. No matter how "sweet" they may be.

These dogs consistently avoid Molly and do not want to engage in play with him. Which is fair enough since he regularly pecks them in the face and around the eyes and mouth. And tries to feed them bugs.

Yeah that looks like a safe and fun interaction, doesn't it? Tense body posture, whale eye, wrinkly whisker bed, teeth bared. And no, it's not play. There is no loose, wiggly play behaviour from these dogs. It's almost always stillness, avoidance and then defensive "bugger off" behaviour that looks like this.

It's not Molly's fault no one wants to play with him - it's his carers and the public and media that fell for their marketing of these interactions.

The general public doesn't know what stressed dog body language looks like so we get posts of very uncomfortable interactions with dumb boomer inspiration post language like "love exisits in the most unlikely places"

I don't think love looks like hard stares, ears pinned back, tense posturing and avoidance

They've also introduced their backyard bred puppy into the mix, which stress yawns multiple times while Molly plays with her feet...

And then Molly sticks his beak into her mouth...

Molly is desperately trying to seek out play and social interaction as an intensely social bird who should be living his best life in a bachelor flock rolling around in the grass with his buddies and roughhousing.

Instead he lives in confusing social limbo that is being marketed as "love transcending boundaries". These dogs want nothing to do with this bird and this bird is desperate for social interaction with someone who speaks his language.

Clearly his adoring "fans" didn't get the "love and peace" messaging very well because they're still sending death and rape threats to wildlife carers expressing very real and valid concerns for this bird's welfare.

Peggy and Molly fans are a bunch of idiot hypocrites who can't stand to lose their daily dopamine fix and have fallen for the story that they were fed while this couple profits off a protected species. A bird who they ripped away from any chance of a normal life and who continue to fight to keep their cash cow from the hands of expert wildlife rehabiliators.

This is not a fairytale story and the media has a lot to answer for in portraying this as such. This is a nightmare and the sooner this bird removed and given to qualified and experienced carers the better.

then, christ. we had each other's adresses bc we were going to send each other christmas/birthday cards. i cannot stress this enough: CARDS. like i was fully certain on my bday i was getting a lovely CARD from R. so you can imagine my surprise when i got an entire package from another country. and like at first i was really excited bc in what crazy world does the girl you like send you a birthday present from abroad? then i opened it.

I've kind of made up my mind about what I'm gonna do for a while now, but I've simply been... too busy and overwhelmed to take the time to let you guys know. I'm not going to delete my tumblr, there's just. Too much here that I don't want to lose.

So far the game plan is: keep my tumblr. But do not upload anymore art or writing on it - not because it's gonna get scraped, because it was already getting scraped anyway, AI company deal or not. It's pretty much unavoidable at this point, unfortunately. I simply do not trust Tumblr with my data, if they're going to sell EVERYTHING, including private messages and such, so I'm not going to give it anything worthwhile to profit off of. Instead, I'm going to start uploading my art exclusively on Ao3, for now. I'll answer any asks I receive here on there too, as well. I'll figure some kind of system out. 🤔

The cool thing about uploading to Ao3 is that anyone subscribed to my profile or to the containment series I will make will get a notification anytime I upload something new. Having my art and writing in one place is likely going to be more convenient for you guys too, since you won't have to move across platforms to get the full experience. 😄It'll be different... but a platform getting too greedy for its own good won't stop me from finding ways to share my stories with y'all. I'll just find another solution.

(I've also been entertaining the idea of joining or making my own Discord server but. That one is a little more delicate. The idea of joining a server that has hundreds of members like a lot of this fandom's servers have, just. Makes me break into hives, lmao. (I am in the Ghost in the Machine fic server. I muted it an hour into joining, it was way too intense for me. |'D) That is way too many people, I simply cannot handle it. I'd be way more comfortable in a smaller group with a less rapid-fire rate of posting and conversation. I am also. Very picky about which servers I join, which makes asking for recommendations doubly awkward when I shoot them all down, haha... And making my own... Err, I can hardly keep up with a server I helped create for another fandom and mod for, I don't think I could handle two of them - I would need other people to handle the moderation for me, and I wouldn't trust just anyone to be a mod. I'd need to know them well enough to know I could trust them, and I... do not really know anyone in this fandom well enough to do that, sadly. I take server moderation very seriously, as someone who has had experience modding for forums back before social media was a thing. I do not know if that would make for a fun experience for everyone, and anyone who hasn't known that kind of supervised experience. It is comforting to me. It may be intimidating for others. So that's still a very hand-wavy, 'eehhhh' kind of thing still.)

All of this to say, that this isn't the last you'll see from me, far from it. I'll restrict my creative output to Ao3 for the foreseeable future, and I'll let you guys on here know when I make a new upload, so those of you who do not have an Ao3 account know when something new has happened.

Applying TV Infomercials to Modern Advertising : Moon Sand

Moon Sand was a hydrophobic children's play and craft material made from a blend of sand and other compounds that prevented it from drying out while still maintaining its moldability. The idea for the toy was not particularly groundbreaking, and in fact it can be made at home easily. Kinetic sand is a popular modern counterpart you can find in most major stores. But Moon Sand, which was first introduced in August 2006, has its own unique brand identity and was successful in generating thousands of sales by using the power of branding and commercial production while TV was still one of the most effective channels of advertising. The commercial, in all its early 2000’s glory, pulls kids in with its upbeat and horn-filled tune. Then, wow- there are a lot of awesome things you can do with this Moon Sand. You can turn it into a bowling ball and pins? You can make an entire farm of animals? As if it can't get any cooler, Moon Sand came with a branded carrying kit and molds for your sand. It's a classic formula for kid's advertising: Fun music, a friendly and excited narrator, and lots of examples of how you can do something exciting with the product they advertise with "just a little" parent assistance. Yet, Moon Sand manages to put a fresh twist on what one may expect from traditional methods of days yore, and still holds a nostalgic place in my heart.

Don't get me wrong, my mom did buy me this because I begged her to, and I cannot recall using it more than maybe once or twice. The few times I did use it it was a huge disappointment, and I certainly was not going to be able to bowl with this mess. Since it didn't hold its shape very well and apparently came with only castle molds, you couldn't do much with it except make castles, unless of course you purchased more molds separately. I'm thoroughly convinced the commercial hired professionals for the commercial to create castles using additional materials. The product itself, and maybe to some extent the entire brand, was not much more than yet another meaningless cash grab thrown out into a sea of consumers the company hoped to profit off of. It did feel really satisfying to squish between your fingers though.

Moon Sand was not exceptional, but it didn't need to be, because for some reason the brand and commercial still stick out in my mind and it felt like a product I had to have, as if my life depended on it. I vividly remember the commercial coming on and how excited I would be, almost stressed, as I would run around to find a pen and paper, hoping to finally write down the phone number for the product and the name of it. It took several tries, since the commercial was so fast, and I would try to explain to my extremely confused mother what it was and why I could not relax until I had this sand. Didn’t she understand that we could potentially not order fast enough, and miss out on the additional two moon sand molds the commercial offered for free to the first callers?

The early 2000's have already captured a particular time in history that we will never see again, a blend of culture and circumstance that was completely unique. Technology's pervasive spread and rapidly changing trends in business and personal habits made for a memorable and transformative landscape for Gen Z to grow up during. Sometimes referred to as "Digital Natives," a majority of people in the U.S. under the age of 30 have spent their entire lives having access to or awareness of new technology like smartphones, streaming services, and cell phone apps. At the same time however, many of them have also had some exposure to older, "traditional" technology such as landline/flip phones, dial up, and desktop websites on the internet. As these forms of communication and creation have become more outdated, they also start to feel much simpler, and can bring about feelings of nostalgia or longing.

Many of our childhood experiences included a unique blend of both modern and traditional media, so it is important that is reflected in representations of Gen Z characters and through advertising. Including references to media and historical moments of the early 2000s that had cultural impact is a great way to boost engagement and improve consumer relations, including toys and children's shows that were popular such as Moon Sand. This is especially true of groups or topics that may have been niche or underrepresented at the time. Since many more people have access to past media than ever before, content that is easy to find and frequently pushed can become quickly oversaturated or seem stale to these consumers. Therefore, finding content that is truly relevant to your consumers and less obvious to the mainstream can greatly improve your brand standing.

Moon Sand used trends of the time to be able to draw in and hold a captive audience with their TV commercial. At the ending they provide a website which you could log onto and purchase through, as well as a phone number to call. They offered extra product as an incentive for purchasing over the phone. Modern advertisements can feel confusing and unrelated to the original product they are supposed to be informing you about, but this commercial is straightforward and has an obvious sales intent. In a time where it can be hard to distinguish ad from art, many younger generations feel refreshed by this kind of simplicity and lack of obfuscation.

As marketers, it is important to utilize channels of communication that make it the most likely for your message to be seen by the desired demographics. While we may have moved away from some of the forms of media that Moon Sand used to build its branding and attempt to generate sales, we can still mimic the aspects of traditional forms of media that were most enjoyed by younger generations in their childhood by tailoring user experiences and communicating in ways that make sense to these audiences.

(fun fact: documentaries can be bullshit too but a lot of times high schools and middle schools will just sit kids in front of a bullshit documentary and tell them to uncritically absorb all the information. i cannot stress this enough that it is not just random youtube essayist you need to be cautious of. so many documentaries are bullshit that will stretch the truth or outright lie to get a larger audience and make more money.)

somerton is very good at giving the illusion he is credible and an authority figure, which is what makes his random bullshit lies about women, nb ppl, trans folk, and other insane internet shit seem so reliable. his co-writer was an academic who he constantly built up as super credible and would never steal and was totally right--likely to build him up to take the fall for him if need be. and he is not the only one who does this. he is not the only person on youtube who does this. he is not the only person in any setting who does this. do not believe any random documentary without fact checking. do not believe video essayists without fact checking.

you will undoubtly make mistakes. its very easy to think something sounds correct, therefore it must be. you can still enjoy video essays. you can still enjoy documentaries. treat them like intros into a subject and before you repeat anything, delve deeper. no authority figure is too good not to be questioned. even people you love and respect can make honest mistakes at best or outright lie to you at worse.

and more importantly: young people are going to keep making these mistakes until they learn how easy it is to distort information for profit. they're going to keep doing this until it's common knowledge people like in documentaries just as easily as people lie in video essays. we gotta keep calling out people spreading misinformation and plagiarizing content. this is work that will never be done and it's unfair to expect young people to just know when most dont put in the time to show them how to judge a source and explain how easy it is to distort things and spread misinformation to the masses. old people fall for it. young people fall for it. weird late 20's to early 40's people fall for it.

Players will take damage if they try to touch peach in any way. Treat her as a high level monk/Druid, who 1000% will throw hands with u and your Pokemon given a good reason. Cold and distant to approach, pawns players off to other staff at any given opportunity. A hermit who will humour you if you can appeal to her better nature, or great desire to fight things. You may lose but it’s the trying that counts.

Wisdom saves (DC28) with Val if you try to touch her. Not only will you gain force damage if you succeed (half damage) or fail (full damage) to lay hands on her, but you’ll see horrifying illusions for a minute relating to loved ones. Frightened condition until a long rest, compelling you not to approach further. I cannot stress this enough. Penalise players for trying to touch her, peach will bluntly warn you once, after that you’re on your own.

Grey regularly hands out handy snacks that may help heal or buff teams. He is warm and open, a good person to approach for hints and tips. Notably found in his labs or out running errands, he’s always kind and gentle, unless that is you threaten his home or his loved ones in a severe way. He is scarier than peach when he’s pushed too hard.

Plenty of staff roam around to offer aid or information, ranging from gardeners, cleaners, shop staff, and specialist keepers who maintain the visitors sections.

A groomers, cafe, food stands, daycare, small fairground with rides and games, a hotel, lighthouse, port, greenhouses and of course multiple lab and practical spaces exist, amongst other interesting buildings.

The resident ranger can offer assistance but she is known to stay quite busy, and so getting her attention may prove difficult if it’s a trivial issue.

Adoption zones are the only approved areas to catch Pokemon, and even then it’s a process that requires a test and paperwork, so everyone involved is able to provide adequate care to the mons in question, and so they know any pre existing conditions.

The islands purpose is recovery, so human needs come in second. The Pokemon will always come first, a fact some visitors may have issue with. The staff will not care and continue to do their job without concern for this.

Year round events make the island busy and people are welcomed to join in with whatever’s going on, be it chilli cooking contests, fairs, pageants, board rental for the sweet ocean waves, or watching a migration pass by. There’s always something to do!

This is all optional, just have fun with it, and I hope your players enjoy! If they ask about it, redirect them to the blog so they can dive on into the content.

Gosh I Need Movies Like "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves"!

Frankly, I'm still a bit surprised by how much I love "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves". I mean, I was very much looking forward to the movie because everything about it just felt right, and I even noticed some fear of disappointment when finally entering the cinema. But it did not disappoint. Gosh, how it did not disappoint.

There's so much for me to love about this movie. To name just three things, it has

a marvelously told story (the exposition was quite nice, but the escape from Revel's End prison really set the stage for that hell of a ride which followed),

a very inspired cast playing absolutely dashing characters (I now have a crush on at least two of the main characters! 😅), and

visual effects and set designs with creativity and attention to detail that I have not seen in what feels like an eternity (the very first shot of Neverwinter already made me want to see this city in all its lovely details).

So yes, I left the cinema as overwhelmed and enthusiastic as I had hoped to be. And much to my personal joy you guys here at Tumblr opened up just another level on which this lovely little movie could excel: I have never played "Dungeons and Dragons" (I know a lot about the mechanics and lore thanks to "Munchkin", though 😅), so reading about how much the movie feels like a true DnD session was very insightful, and it even made me see some of its flaws in a new light.

And then it struck me: "Honor Among Thieves" is that very rare type of movie that I really, really need from time to time. A true feel-good movie whose production process brought people together to tell a special story that usually has already been around in some form before. A fantastic, entertaining tale that can be enjoyed - and I cannot stress enough how important that is - utterly unironically and unapologetically.

The first movie of this type that I remember watching is "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" from 2004, and it has been one of my absolute favorites for a long, long, time. So much energy, and so much fun! But there are more. I'm talking about movies like "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy" (2005), "The Men Who Stare at Goats" (2009), "Tron: Legacy" (2010), "Real Steel" (2011), "John Carter" (2012), and "Booksmart" (2019). Yeah, that kinda was an advertisement for films I still have a crush on. Sorry not sorry.

The downside of this type of movie, because of course there's a downside: They only seldom make a profit. And "Honor Among Thieves" is not an exception to this rule, having grossed about 125 Million USD worldwide at the box office so far, while costing roughly 150 Million. But you know what? That's fine. Big Hollywood studios regularly make a fortune with mainstream blockbuster stuff that I don't even care to remember after I skipped the advertisement promoting it, so it's only fair for them to make a monetarily stupid decision from time to time that will make me oh so happy.

So, long story short: As long as studios like Paramount Pictures keep making marvellous darlings of a potential (or actual) flop like "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves", I will not even begin to begrudge the obscene amounts of money they get from too-big-to-fail box office hits like "Top Gun: Maverick".

Ao3 already hosts fanworks that are against its TOS. I mentioned placeholder fics in the post you're responding to (here if people missed it), but much more seriously: commissioned works. Stories written for profit do not fall under fair use and are therefore against the Archive's TOS - but we all know there are still hundreds of them (probably more) on there. It's impossible to regulate when the authors do it quietly and don't mention it on the archive itself. Everyone knows that this happens, but that doesn't mean Ao3 shouldn't have a policy against it and shouldn't remove the ones that are blatant about flouting the rules.

AI fics aren't fanworks. Right now it's still unclear whether they would even be protected under fair use the way non-profit fanworks are. It's not about completely removing them from the archive, it's about drawing a clear distinction between what is and isn't a fanwork, which AI objectively is not.

People who post AI works for fun and people who pass off AI output as their own are fundamentally different people. The former are jumping on a bandwagon. The latter are pathetic losers and they'll eventually get bored. And they are, I cannot stress this enough, already doing it whether AI works are allowed or not because the thing that makes you go "hey guys, look at this neat thing I got from playing around on ChatGPT!" is not the same thing that makes you lie about making something on a platform where the only currency is praise.

I genuinely don't think the increase in untagged AI fics will be anything like people are suggesting, but even if it were, I guess I just don't care. Maybe I just don't understand this panic over not being able to filter out AI works because I already back out of 90% of fics I click on. I am unfathomably picky, and AI fics are so bad it takes less than a minute to recognise that it isn't worth reading (whether you know it's AI or not). I would rather back out of 91% instead if it means Ao3 actually taking a stand against a technology that I find so fundamentally repulsive and antithetical to everything the OTW stands for.

so fun story

they only pokemon game i played as a kid was ruby. and don't get me wrong, i loved it. but pokemon was never a franchise i was IN LOVE with.

but during college, i found myself surrounded by discord furries and felt compelled to finally give the franchise a shot. And its the single most profitable multimedia franchise on planet earth, so it's probably i should be keeping tabs of regardless.

so i played through all 7 games that had been released by that point- playing the most up-to-date versions (so instead of the original red/blue, i'd be playing leaf green. instead of silver, i'd be playing soul silver. etc.)

And here's my full, zero nostalgia goggle review:

Gen 1- Genuinely kind of bad, but every gameboy game was bad in some way or the other. It's a miracle what was able to be accomplished, even if it was never super engaging.

Gen 2- Genuinely a very captivating handheld RPG experience. I still felt like it was on the easy side, but that's going to be an complaint with the series.

Gen 3- Just kind of okay. I liked it, and it has some of my favorite mons (shedinja, tropius) but I feel like it lags during the final third. And I know the IGN "Too Much Water" is a meme thing, but let me clarify the complaint- water in these games are super boring and lacking in dimension. The reason the game feels like it starts dragging in the third act is because the last third of the map is almost entirely water-based. The issue isnt that there's too much of it, it's that there's too much of it AND it's boring and poorly designed. With that said, it's still good.

Gen 4- Just kind of okay. It feels like much of the game is actively wasting your time. Like those tiles that serve no purpose but to take up twice the time to move through? The complete drought of fire types? Apparently a lot of the issues with the game were addressed in platinum, which I should have played.

Gen 5- Genuinely spectacular. It was this first game since Johto where I was looking forward to every play session. Every room had some fun little easter egg in it if you went exploring. Every map was bursting in charm and style. I played this game and UNDERSTOOD the appeal of the series. I even sunk dozens of hours into the post-game, because there was just so much of it. I cannot stress enough how much I genuinely adored this title.

Gen 6- Just kind of okay. It was lacking in a lot of the features of earlier games and the new stuff they added felt VERY gimmicky (mega evolutions, pokemon ami). But ultimately... I couldn't be TOO mad at the game since they were on new tech, and it would be unfair to expect every game to be a masterpiece

But then with gen 7... I noticed something

the game wasn't good. It wasn't "just okay" like most of the entries thus far. It was actively bad. Everything just felt so... rushed and phoned in. The world was boring and ugly. The designs lacked charm. The pokemon lacked charm. The story lacked charm. And that's when I realized so much of the games were crutched up BY the charm and visuals and cute designs and attention to detail that when those are all stripped away... pokemon at its core is kinda shit.

Cut to years later.

Then Gen 8 came along and it too was lacking in anything to love. The production values got worse. It got lazier. The world got more empty. The animations got worse. And I began getting frustrated with it. The shallow systems. The repetitive gameplay. The story that is both completely uninteresting, intrusive, and obnoxious. And the gimmicks got even more gimmicky. These are all issues that have been with the franchise since gen 1. For the first time, this was a mainline game on a home console. It was widely publicized that they would be DRASTICALLY cutting back on features and scope. When I first heard it, my naive ass was thinking "This was the perfect opportunity to rework the core of the franchise and fix the issues that have been with it since day 1." But they didn't fix anything. They didn't add anything either! They just did the exact same thing they've been doing for 20 years, but worse!

It was the most profitable game in the series up until that point.

Then gen 9 is just more of the same. I bought it when it first came out and of all of these listed, it is the ONLY one I couldn't bring myself to finish. I resold it after 9-ish hours.

Just like... What the fuck happened to pokemon? I know most of the people who say that are nostalgia-blinded and have some drooling investment in the property and think daddy nintendo actually likes them and they hold up whatever game they grew up with on a pedestal and just call anything new shit...

But objectively speaking, as someone with no investment in the property or loyalty to nintendo, there was a noticeable and drastic drop in quality that happened at the start of gen 7.

Was it the switch to 3d? I don't think so, because gen 6 was their first attempt at 3d and it wasn't bad.

Was it the switch to home console? I don't think it could have been that as gen 7 was where it started and that released on the 3ds.

What was the shift in the company culture and ethos that caused this dramatic and consistent drop in quality? Please tell me i'm not the only one who noticed this.

The main course I did to learn how to write 👉 bachelor degree 🤪 It didn't teach me how to write better fanfiction, but it did teach me enough about the publishing industry for me to see how fanfiction as a medium differs from published fiction and what gaps regular writing advice isn't filling. (Context! Yay!)

In all seriousness, the best stuff I learned about writing was from reading hundreds of blogposts and watching hundreds of videos ever since high school. Holly Lisle's blog and email list was a favourite of mine back then, and now it's Mythcreants.com, because they have a critical, intersectional approach to storytelling that cuts through most of the industry fluff. (Seriously, just read their take-down of the 'Save the Cat' formula.)

In terms of YouTubers, some of my favourites include Abbie Emmons, Hello Future Me, Reedsy, and Jenna Moreci. (I just realised that there isn't a whole lotta diversity, especially race-wise, in this bunch, so that's something for me to improve.)

These other two sources aren't exactly general writing resources but they have been important perspectives on my fanfiction journey: @writingwithcolor and Stitch's Media Mix. Part of improving fanfiction isn't just about improving pacing, plotting, and prose, but also representation. These two resources focus mainly on race, but there are a wealth of resources by people of various minorities offering advice on how to better represent people like them.

The main caution I'd like to give in regards to most of these resources is that they assume that your goal is to get published, and thus their goal is to teach you how to write something that's sellable, something you can pitch to agents, something you can market to a sizeable enough niche. I cannot stress enough how pervasive this assumption is, to the point where we're conditioned to believe that fanfiction can only ever be a stepping stone towards getting published.

If your goal is to write fanfiction, then you need to treat the advice any professionals offer... as a sundae bar. 🍨 Take what works for your story, for the fanfiction medium in general, and leave the rest. Critically examine all professional writing advice through the lense of a hobbiest.

(Side Note: If you decide that you do want to be published someday, that's totally okay! This ask was specifically about fanfiction so that's why I'm centring that.)

I think the only way to keep getting incrementally better at writing fanfiction is to think of a story you love so much that you're willing to learn whatever you can to write it. It's about putting passion and personal fulfilment first and whatever is considered "good writing" (usually defined by whatever's profitable) as a close second. We fic-writers and readers live for the indulgent nature of these stories. As long as you're writing and having fun (and improving your craft because it's fun), I think you're gonna smash out some great fics!

Ok it's becoming unavoidable.

The 2010s internet business model is failed, and it's very likely taking tumblr down with it. The good parts of this site are going to die.

There is an inherent disconnect between the best product/service and the most profitable product/service. However the assumption of correlation AND causation between these is at the core of capitalism.

I explain.

The business model which drives tumblr's decision making is the same as drove nearly all sites in the 2010s. There was so much reliable investor money, that sites could fully fund their costs and expand wildly without ever making a profit, or ever charging their users for a service. Their goal was the long game, offer something fun for free, get people hooked, become necessary for daily life; that if they could capture enough of a userbase, then that MUST be profitable at some point. How could a site with 50mil daily users not make money, right?

Well, there was enough money flowing in to prevent those questions from ever being seriously asked. Which is unfortunate, because the answer is no. YouTube, despite massive use, omnipresence, and so so many ads, doesn't make money. Gmail doesn't make money. They painted themselves into a corner by being free, and people are used to that. The status quo was always unsustainable. Employees cost money. Servers cost money. These bills were paid by willing investors in the past, but with little more userbase to conquer, what's bringing them in? Now websites are scrambling to maintain the cash flow necessary to stay alive, let alone improve.

Gmail, YouTube, Discord, Twitch all have mega profitable services bankrolling them for the sake of surveillance, but tumblr doesn't have that (neither do Reddit, Uber/Lyft, or Snapchat). Various buyers (Yahoo and others) have dumped cash on tumblr occasionally, but that's not going to keep happening. So what's the plan? Cutting costs will only guarantee a slow death and nonfunctioning website (Twitter). So tumblr must either increase revenue or fire everyone and shut down the site. I cannot stress enough that the status quo of a functioning website for free, cannot exist without someone dumping money on it.

Now finally I get to the main point 🎉

Have you ever spent hours mindlessly scrolling some app, bored the whole time, and at the end you feel like shit? According to our current system, this is your favorite app which you like using the most. Have you ever had a meaningful connection on a forum or witnessed perfect comedic timing in a reblog chain? Well unless you chose to spend hours experiencing these beautiful moments (oxymoron), then the system will interpret your enjoyment of those websites as far less. That is considered a bad website. The only metric currently used is eyeball time. This metric does not reflect user satisfaction.

This metric is used because it's a simple conversion from eyeballs to ad views to income. So eyeball time becomes the goal and social media sites become optimized towards quick-seratonin-hit addiction and features that trap rather than convincing user to choose to spend their time on a site. Why isn't the latter a good enough option? Because happy people don't choose to spend their days looking at ads.

And that's the heart of the issue. Humans are not happy when they're generating max profit. Capitalism is never satisfied with profit alone, it demands the greatest possible profit. And therefore capitalism demands systems which make us unhappy. This is tragically at the core of capitalism; the idea that consumer choice will direct companies to produce the best product. That the product which wins out must therefore be the best for consumers. But it's not true. It has never been true. It's why cigarette companies succeed while companies that make long-lasting cars fail.

Tumblr, with its features that encourage user interaction and discourage influencer culture, is more enjoyable and less profitable. Can they find a workforce of engineers who are just as talented and hard working as the Facebook engineers, but accept much lower salaries? Probably not. So what do they do? I expect they make things worse on purpose, and eek out some kind of survival. Remember the porn ban?
