hello thank you :) obviously there are a lot of different ways people do sketch construction but this is the quick n dirty of how i go about it

tbh i still run into a lot of dissatisfaction w drawing heads at certain angles, especially the slightly up angled view im obsessed w for some reason, but this is basically what i do for every head. disclaimer this is all influenced by my visual lean towards realism + not a proclamation of what art is Good and True .obvs.

The bare essentials are 1) making sure there's enough bulk of the skull for the neck (thicker than you think) to connect comfortably 2) making sure the eye socket line falls ~halfway down the length of the head 3) establish the noseline/nose block 4) making sure the ear/jaw/hairline placement affirms the angle i'm going for

Doing sketchovers of photos can help give you an understanding of where features generally fall in relation to each other, as well as what you tend to forget/overemphasize/deemphasize when freehanding. It should also obviously be noted there's a far bigger variation in facial proportions than can be described by the breakdown of "eyeline/noseline/chin" divisions, and imo the best way to figure out the extent of that variation is by doing photo studies! finally, i draw a lot of floating heads all the time, and am pretty comfortable extrapolating from this relatively loose construction method lol BUT if an angle is particularly awkward or I need a really clear grasp of form for lighting, i will absolutely set up more construction lines to help me. so like no wrong way to do it, construction sketches should be as in depth as is helpful to you, however much or little.

finished animorphs today !! it was my goal to finish the series before the end of the year, and i achieved it with about 5 hours to spare- 62 books, as i admittedly didn't read the choose your own adventure ones.

these books were an absolute wild ride, and i'm sure i'll have more posts and more thoughts in the days to come as i process the finale, but i just have to say. goddamn. goddamn. i'm so glad i read that series i'm so glad i got to know those characters i'm so glad i decided to experience the story, and i'm going to miss it
