Did I talk on tumblr about my basic to gem challenge already? I saw a few others do it and as someone just very much used to throw all gene and breed scrolls on a dragon to get what i want having to do it forcebly slow and without an end goal in mind I thought this could be so fun! Left is the start of the challenge a triple basic fae, right is my current heir, 5 generations in :D

I know that at this point the breeding cooldowns will only get longer. And patience is not my strong suit but that's exactly why I am doing this challenge :D

thoughts on todays volume! in case you are unaware, android users got to play the volume very early, while ios users were given a late release. lmao. MC somehow came out unscathed in movie night, plot armor for the win ! the guys pull MC for a chat before the boy's choice recoupling. the pit in my stomach when i read that.

theo flirts again, but this time our responses are flirty, rude af, or "you should focus on claudia." i didn't want to pick any of these but i picked the flirty one because at first i thought it could be "jokingly" said. interestingly enough, he says something among the lines of how he didn't expect MC to be interested in him because she's with claudia . i didn't want that to bite me in the ass later so i just replayed and picked the rude option (so it seems that it's "canon" for theo & claud to simultaneously crush on MC? at least if she's bi/pan etc.)

i saw this coming but still, this has to be a joke … 😭😭😭😭😭

there’s like what, three volumes left ? unless FB decides to drag this out with a “season 8.5,” this should’ve been a players choice recoupling (hell, it technically could've still been boys choice, with MC getting first pick for winning the heart rate challenge, or because she was selected by the viewers, literally anything lol)

it'd be one thing if OG LI was like, "i chose you because i wanted to keep you safe . even if we're not meant to be, i still care for you, i want you have a chance with the one you want," blah blah blah, but FB never lets us be in a friendship couple, he's just gonna keep pining for MC ... moving on

i kinda love the cowgirl outfit. it's terrible, but i love it in a kitschy way . also i just kinda went with it because the mermaid outfit was clipping through MC's braids (as you can see the hat has some weird layering issue, but it's the lesser of two evils)

claudia's outfit wasn't paywalled, and i didn't get the gem option to give jin the viking outfit so he came out looking like this lmfaooooooo

I keep hearing a lot about Flight Rising but I have no real idea what it is about apart from dragons, can you tell me more about the game and what you enjoy about playing it?

ohhhhhh my god where do i even BEGIN...i love fr so much, it is the only browser game that has been able to capture me, lol. i hear a lot of people saying "it's basically draconic neopets" so i guess that's true but to be totally honest i know absolutely nothing about neopets lmao

anyway, flight rising is, essentially, a browser based dragon breeding game. when you first join the site you get one (1) custom dragon, the only custom you'll ever get, and one randomly rolled dragon, and from there you kinda pick your direction with what you wanna do on the site. the breeding mechanics are the main point in the game and they're kinda brilliant in how simple they are and how many possibilities you can have.

Dragons have seven inheritable features: the first being breed, the second being body color (primary color), the third being body pattern (primary gene), and then the same for the wings (secondary) and overlay (tertiary color is invisible if the dragon has "basic" as their tertiary gene). This is Perelandra, she is a guardian black/black/mint skink/butterfly/firefly. You can buy and change genes, breed, and eye type, but not color.

Dragons also have different eye types (hers is faceted) but those are rolled randomly. There's a bazillion colors, which makes breeding for rare combos really fun and rewarding just in that it's super satisfying to finally get the dragon you want after sinking a massive amount of time into it, depending on breeding cooldown length.

The dragons are also super customizable, there's tons of apparel and there are also usermade skins; this is my pride and joy, Tealeaf, who I completely gened myself in i think 8 months, wearing the skin odocoileus:

Apart from breeding you can also fight in the coliseum with a team of dragons to get item drops.

The really, really nice thing about this game is that the ratios of regular to premium currency are in this nice sweet spot where it's challenging to get the premium (gems) but certainly not impossible; I've not paid a dime to get where I am and have still gotten plenty of gems and been able to customize lots of dragons.

There's also just a really generous site culture where older members will frequently just give newbies (or anyone really) really expensive items purely just to help out.

ALSO, the site is divided into flights, which are basically clubs that determine the aesthetic of your page and the eye color of your dragons. There are eleven flights, I started in water but I'm currently in ice and am thinking about moving to lightning or arcane, not sure yet. There is a mechanic called dominance through which the top three flights for the week will get certain perks (marketplace items and lair upgrades are cheaper, mainly). This is a collective effort; the whole flight earns dominance points by exalting dragons (points are higher if those dragons have fought in the coliseum first). Dragons don't die so this is the only way to permanently remove them from the site. It's kind of brilliant; it keeps the site's servers functioning and users get really, REALLY into organizing dominance pushes. There's bingo games and raffles and art trades and all sorts of stuff, usually planned out a year in advance if it's meant to be a head to head dom battle. Like for example a while ago, water fought earth (and won!) and we'd been planning that at LEAST nine months in advance. I personally stored 200 dragons to be exalted and won a couple raffle prizes.

Dominance might be my favorite mechanic on the site, I just love how much it's like completely community run based on this relatively minor site mechanic and has become something so central to the community.

I am suddenly reminded of how long it's been since I used to lurk on the RP forum 24/7. FR Username/Numbers: Dracknorin, #45216 Basic Clan Lore: A haven for dragons with strange magic, hidden deep within the abiding boneyard. The peace is only fragile, and the dragons cutthroat. They must seek safety together, as many are shunned even by the gods. Their leader is a powerful necromancer, who works tirelessly to do the unthinkable- shed mortal flesh and become a dracolich. Plans For Dragon: An offered claw- Penance recognizes talent when she sees it, and makes an offer. She can turn talent into mastery. It is a place of some prestige, apprenticing under such a powerful mage. The necromancer has another apprentice. Called Vessel (a transplant from another lore clan!). Vessel has an aptitude for magic, but not for raising the dead, and grapples with faith that is to the Plaguebringer first. I would pit him as a jealous and dangerous rival. A dragon who would betray her with little provocation, but perhaps that makes him a friend. Bonds formed in the only way Tooth knows- with sharp teeth and spilled blood.

Since Tooth has such strong combat skills, she would likely be quick to overtake Penance's favored thrall loyal guard in matters of actually helping Penance gather the "resources" for her studies. Sacrifices and gemstones are both needed in massive quantities. I don't think Tooth would be able to raise the dead without a focus, it makes for an interesting challenge if she manages to bring back something intelligent. I don't think any character is complete without losing someone close to them (although admittedly I'm not sure who would be that dragon at this stage), but for a necromancer? That's a free invitation to be tragic. And of course, what is a lich but an incredibly powerful being? Perhaps, a god? At least in the way her family understood it. Patience, while not her greatest virtue, runs in Tooth's blood. A good apprentice can be very close to their master. That immense power that Penance seeks to harness by severing her soul from her flesh could belong to the young guardian in time. Perhaps without quite as much effort. She only has to be ready to defend her place at Penance's side and wait. Additional tidbits~ - Penance has not mastered returning the dead to actual life, but her one current success was revived in a similar fashion to how Tooth raises the dead. A spine driven into his chest as he slipped into death and left there. Lazarus lives, with a sick sort of worship for the dragon that "saved" him. There is hope that Tooth could be even better than Penance at that sort of resurrection. Although to what end is anyone's guess. - Being the favorite apprentice will not do anything good to her golden child complex. Penance will give her all the attention and approval she craves, and it will drive Vessel mad. Plague mage showdown. Regularly. Penance won't stop it. - There is a whole caste of dragons who function to offer refuge to travelers. The hospitality of Clan Haven is bait to keep a fresh supply of bodies coming in. However, there is no shortage of clan members who are not practicing some sort of dark magic. - Her insecurities about having mundane hobbies will be used as an excuse to get Tooth to interact with some of the other resident lessons on the downfall of trying to make yourself immortal.

Intended Payment: Clan Haven offers a large tithe of treasure (I am gem poor unfortunately.) to the home clan of a new member, on the off chance that the new dragon didn't wander in on their own. Penance may offer one of her seekers as well, should the clan wish to remain in contact.

(Regene, change species, rename, change gender identities/pronoun preferences, etc) I ask only that you have a lore/character reason for breed or name changes, as they'll be connected to a wider group of dragons that would need to know these things (What kind of dragon their sibling has become, What to call them in letters, etc) and if you can keep them a modern breed so they can keep their cleavers, well that'd just be nice for their old man Pig.

Please honor the basic lore of the dragon you win, you're welcome to rewrite/reinterpret the lore they arrive with, but please don't eliminate that history entirely, since they'll be interwoven with other clans/players!

[and a big thank you to Khadjin for reminding me I never mentioned this yet!] my lore deviates pretty substantially from site lore. however every aspect can be explained within the context of the site, please don't feel like you have to adopt my headcanons to participate in these!- my "Lesser Gods" are nothing more than magically afflicted/overcharged spirits or magically mutated dragons created in a reactor explosion somewhere in Lightning and some timeloop silliness, and the 'Gaps' are highly concentrated leylines caused by this incident. the eleven gods of sornieth remain the only true gods in my lore much like the site on the whole!- the Piglets and their parents simply lived under the affliction of spirits, cults, and mutated dragons and contextualized them as "Gods" the very same way we create urban myth/legends. While they would know of The Host and the Gaps because of the direct effect both have had on their parents, they are not required to have continued to believe in them as "Higher beings" and can have learned in their time away from their family that these things are likely, little more than the arcane gone haywire.

These are just some smaller lore bits and pieces you're welcome to use or disregard for each child, things that I couldn't fit into the bios in a way that made sense. much like the example outfit photo up-top, this is for fun or stuff to help get ideas flowing, if you're stuck!

Tooth has horrible first-child syndrome despite being the third-born, she wants her parents' (and others, really) approval in any way she can get it, which has led to a deathly competitive streak- dangerous in a dragon closer to a horror slasher than anything else.

Tooth is the child with the most heavy proclivity toward plague's flesh and bone sensibilities, and while this is fitting for a necromancer, it makes her look odd when engaging with hobbies that aren't hunting, killing, or doing strange magic- she's mildly self conscious about this.

Her tendency to pull her own teeth to create resurrection daggers has led to her using her mouth as an odd accessory, adorned with teeth carved from precious stones, metals, and various other souvenirs she's chosen.

She's one of the few members of the Piglets who actually has an innate sense of magic, as her talent with resurrection does not require any outside intervention beyond a focus for her powers!

Oh and while I’m here I never did ever like explain what is up with my lair.

When I rejoined Flight Rising back in 2017 (I had joined in 2014 but quit because for a while FR had no clue what it was doing with its moderation/rule set) I decided to do a little challenge to make things more interesting.

All dragons in my lair (besides  the kids of some of the gen 1 pairs I use for fodder) are:

First gen.

Cost me 20k treasure/20 gems or less.

Were not self hatched with rare exceptions (I allow myself 1 NotN egg hatchling a year basically).

Will be fully gened eventually (breed/eye type changes are optional).

The greater goal is to take gen 1s that would otherwise end up as fodder because their colors are just too unconventional for most users and try to actually do something interesting with them. I’ve gotten some pretty neat results from doing this honestly

Dragonvale World vs. Flight Rising, a mild rant

Okay so I’ve been on FR for a couple years. I didn’t ever want to join it because I knew there were microtransactions and that I have money management issues, but I got forced into it anyway. Recently, I have discovered Dragonvale. I think a few friends are peeved that I’m moving my dragon interests elsewhere, so let me sum things up in a rant and possibly convert a few people in the process.

Festivals/Events:

FR: once a month. requires a ton of grinding and/or Real Money spending to get all the items you want.

Dragonvale: weekly events! every weekend there’s new challenges to complete, and instead of LOSING money, real or fake, you EARN IT. a game that actually rewards you for playing! how about that??

Login rewards:

FR: None??? You get a single gem if your dragons are fed, but that’s it???

Dragonvale: a different reward, every day! and every 20 days, you get to choose a GEM EARNING DRAGON. so instead of having to purchase gems with actual money, you can earn them through rewards! holy whoah what a mind blowing concept!

Customization:

FR: Lots. Points go to FR, for this one. Clothes, genes, skins, so much customization.

Dragonvale: You get to design your park however you want, but that’s about it. Granted I’ve got a pretty bagnin’ garden near the Sumi dragons.

Food/Money grinding:

FR: Tedious. Very little reward, for a whole lot of effort.

Dragonvale: You get so much money. So very much. Things gradually get more expensive, but when you’re a gotdamn billionaire who even cares. Also, all dragons eat the same type of food and some dragons can even earn it themselves.

Species:

FR: A limited few. With so much customization though, I can understand why.

Dragonvale: LITERALLY HUNDREDS. AND ALSO “SHINY” VERSIONS.

Community: 

FR: they’ve got one.

Dragonvale: they do not. BUT, the original Dragonvale does, and World is working on one!

Coliseum/arenas:

FR: Use three dragons to level up and fight monsters for rewards. Some are good, most aren’t worth the effort.

Dragonvale: The original DV has a coliseum, and you don’t have to manually play it! Some people like battling, I’ll grant that, but for people like me who work all day every day, it’s a nice change to throw your dragons into the arena and let them battle it out, then come home to a nice reward. It also has racing, exploration, gathering(DVWorld), and numerous quests both in the base game and through events.

Breeding:

FR: Get a ton of gene/color combinations, but limited to the nest’s element.

Dragonvale: Breed results can come out as any element that either parent has, or even an entirely new one! (heck yes Sumi dragon)

Conclusion: They both each have their pros and cons, but the absolute winner is Dragonvale simply because it doesn’t force you to pay Real Money. Yes, it’s an option. Yes, you get better results. But overall, both Dragonvale and Dragonvale World want EVERYTHING to be available to players who spend money and those who don’t/can’t. So, there’s a $100 super rare dragon available for a limited time? You can breed it, without spending $100. It takes longer, but it’s worth it to not have your wallet yell at you.

Honestly this seems like a dumb rant, but I’ve always had problems with managing my money. I’m an impulse buyer, I’m aware of that, and I try my hardest to avoid sites that basically force you to pay for quality items. It’s why I quit GaiaOnline, and it’s why I’m trying to do the same with Flight Rising. Peace out, yo.
