I finally finished that so here's the deal. The events take place exactly 200 years later and folks here work as economists, other than that everything's (almost) the same. Also everyone who died in battle or executed because of war now alive and well, maybe just fired/quit their job.
Also many of these designs were made with help of my awesome gf (@avorizh14)!!

Crozier’s put-upon expression. Irving and Hodgson shrinking from the awkwardness. Fitzjames’ Victorian bitchface. Poetry in motion.

James Byres – Queer Scottish antiquarian
Tumblr media
James Byres was a Scottish Jacobite, a Catholic, and a homosexual man who lived in Rome in the second half of the 18th century and made a very successful career as an artist, antiquarian, art dealer and guide for the young British men visiting the city on their grand tours.
Francis Kinloch hired Byres for precisely this purpose:
I shall say nothing to you about Antiquities at present, for I have determined to take a Course of them with Byres who is a very ingenious man, & who has made them his principal study for some time_ my Course is to last ten days only_
Francis Kinloch to Johannes von Müller, 2 December 1776
And he seems to have gained a lot by the experience:
I have finished my round of antiquities with Byres, & never passed twelve Mornings successively more agreeably
Francis Kinloch to Johannes von Müller, 19 December 1776

This painting by Franciszek Smuglewicz shows James Byres (second from left) with his sister, father, mother, and Christopher Norton. Norton and Byres lived together in Rome, ran a successful business, and Byres bequeathed a substantial portion of his assets to Norton in his will. Perhaps most telling is the painting above, which not only locates Norton as a member of the family, but also includes a relief in the background depicting Ganymede and Zeus (a well-known classical homosexual motif).
"Ganymede" was such a telling shorthand for homosexuality that it appears here as the title of Matthew Darly's satirical print of Samuel Drybutter, an openly homosexual man:

Norton's sketchbook has been digitised by the British Museum, and in amid the precise sketches of ancient statues is this soft, personable portrait of a man who I assume to be Byers:

The Scottish National Galleries are presenting a talk in June about Byres and queerness – thanks to @john-laurens for bringing it to my attention! Attendance is free, you just need to register here:
