#ThanksgivingWeekend2018 ✨ #thankful to have worked with @ava duvernay @freddymiyares @williamphopkins @ashleyl422 @mike.damato25 on #CentralParkFive ..such an important story being brought to light by Ava..besides her incredible gifts as a director and leader, Ava's kindness and generous heart most resonated with me❤️She cast me in a cisgender role, showing that filmmakers of her caliber can hire transgender actors to play cisgender characters on platforms as wide-reaching as #Netflix and that being able to do so allows opportunities for a historically disenfranchised community, and that our playing cisgender roles does not place cis lives in danger. (That's another topic..on why cis actors playing trans roles places trans lives in danger...) For me, a #cisgender role is one where #gender isn't dissected and one simply feels seen for oneself without preconceived notions from being labeled. When I had the opportunity to play Juliet onstage, it was a dream come true. She was an iconic #cis role and I admit, I had apprehension on coming out publicly as #transgender a few months later at the thought of being pigeonholed and no longer being considered for cis roles. But the thought of living in the shadows and not living proud of who I fully am overrode that. Publicly coming out as trans has given me such freedom and light, and the immense gift of being able to tell trans narratives through the authenticity of our experience..it has given me a deeper and more connected love for my #trans community. I'm profoundly thankful for visionaries like Ava, my beloved manager and agents, my dear theatre family the #drillingcompany and @bryantparknyc and the amazing directors and casting directors who've considered me for cis as well as trans roles. #CP5 along with #TalesOfTheCity and #HighMaintenanceHBO hired me to play cis characters after I'd publicly come out as trans..these shows and their creative teams have given me the gift of feeling seen for what I can bring to the table as an actress and artist.
