'Rotary Day' five years ago. Even half a decade on I still struggle with putting my feelings into words. It was truly a dream come true having the opportunity to experience one of the rarest and most impressive sights in all of railroading, something that has happened not more than 10 or 12 times in my lifetime.

I guess sometimes it is better to be lucky than good as this was my first trip to Donner Pass, a place I'd dreamt of seeing ever since I was young child, and I got to shoot the rotaries working! We use the phrase once in a lifetime a lot...but this time it was not hyperbolic.

After snowshoeing out from Troy and shooting them at Soda Springs it was on to a Norden, a place of near spiritual reverance. With over 1000 feet of concrete snow sheds and at the time classic Southern Pacific era searchlights still standing, this place continued to hold on to just enough of the magic of its glory days of yore.

After working east to the 6972 ft top of the pass at the Big Hole, summit Tunnel 41, the rotaries came back west and crossed over in the shed at West Norden and waited for the passage of two eastbounds before they started east again this time cutting back track 1.

With the flanger set and Amtrak out of the way, only moments later the MofW guys are given the railroad and the rotary set again emerges from the east end of the sheds hereat MP 191.2 on modern day Union Pacific's Roseville Subdivision. Running as train WTKTKF-25 SPMW207 (blt. 10-26 Alco-Brooks, rblt Relco 2013) leads the way east on Main 1 this time. Two big SD70ACEs coupled nose to nose provide the horsepower to push, while a pair of rebuilt F7Bs provide the horsepower for the massive blade motors, and bringing up the rear is unrebuilt rotary 209 (blt. Sep. 1929 Alco-Brooks).

This spot at the Soda Springs Road crossing is three miles from the crest of the Sierras, and the crew is seen leaning out of the cab of newly rebuilt SPMW207 (blt. 10-26 Alco-Brooks, rblt Relco 2013) to chat with a colleague before continuing east up the 1.88% grade. Trailing the 207 are two SD70ACEs and on the west end of the set is unrebuilt rotary 209. Taken exactly four years ago today…a day I shall never forget.
