#frozer with a twist

Once again, i personally don't think of this as salt and more like a realistic(?) outcome. I don't really know how to put this into words but before Kagami and Marinette became friends she had harassed Kagami not wanting her to get close to Adrien (though in frozer she did leave her alone but only for that episode). So i was thinking about this from the perspective of a girl who doesn't even know who Marinette is and is suddenly being harassed by her

Marinette had been watching Ella for a while now. She first noticed her when she and Adrien were talking and looked like they were really close. It's not surprising since they were both on the fencing team and actually had some things in common. Marinette however, had spiraled upon seeing them so close and feared he would be taken away from her, so she started coming up with plans to separate them. What Marinette didn't see was that everyone on the fencing team were close, not just Adrien and Ella. They spend months training together, having team meetings, and going to competitions together, it was natural that they would become close

Marinette tries many different ways to sabotage Ella, like messing with her gear so she couldn't go to practice or trying to mess up her clothes so she has to go home. Nothing she does works and really only seemed to slightly inconvenience her. As Marinette watches them practice she sees her and Adrien laughing, and not thinking, makes a desperate attempt to separate them. Marinette rolls something towards her so she can trip over it. What she doesn't expect is for Ella to lunge in that moment and step on the item. The item misplaces Ella's footing at an odd angle, twisting her ankle. Ella was on the ground holding her ankle in pain as the others rushed towards her

Marinette felt awful, she didn't mean for her to get hurt, she just wanted her away from Adrien. What Marinette didn't see was someone walking by in the moment she rolled the item towards Ella. They immediately called her out getting the attention of the team and their teacher. They explained that they saw Marinette roll the item towards Ella causing her to twist her ankle. Marinette avoided looking at Adrien, she couldn't stand the look of disbelief on his face. The teacher had told some of the students to take Ella to the nurse while they took Marinette to the principle's

She got a weeks worth of detention, but was made clear that she was lucky that Ella's parents didn't want to press charges. She knew that which is why she decided that she would make it up to Ella. She set out to the nurse's office and found Ella resting on one of the beds. When Ella saw her she got nervous but she wouldn't back down now. She apologized to her saying she never meant for her to get hurt and that she hopes they can be friends. Ella had looked at Marinette blankly before responding that she acknowledges her apology but doesn't forgive her. Before Marinette can respond Ella continues, asking why she would even do this when she doesn't even know her. Marinette stutters not knowing how to respond and not wanting to reveal that she did it out of jealousy. Ella only shakes her head and says that she doesn't want to be friends with her and wants nothing to do with her

After the incident with Marinette it quickly spread around the school what she had done. People whispered and gave her looks of suspicion wondering if they were next. Adrien had pulled away from her and didn't want much to do with her. He still couldn't believe that she would do something like that. Sure, she felt remorseful but only after she realized she really hurt Ella and not the other times where she tried to ruin her clothes. Adrien didn't know what to think anymore other than he really didn't know her as well as he thought

My assumptions were correct, the salters just couldn’t let go of the past after Lila’s debut and the infamous season 3 episode. No wonder I still see these bozos still plague here, YouTube and whatever social media site exists. They are the reason why I hardly touch fanfic crossovers since I fear seeing them sink to the low levels of that ship, bashing and all.

They might as well make hatedoms of fictional characters from other series/franchise look sane and reasonable.

I may not be a sports fan but Major League Baseball should have the MLB acronyms not the stupid show. The former earned and actually deserved it after all.

The Miraculous Ladybug plaguedom got it coming for a looonggg time with their poor behavior.

Yep. I be avoiding searching up or typing Lila Rossi anywhere besides here (or Discord servers I’m in or Telegram channels) these days. And the funny part is the things they jeered about are ignored when similar or surpassing crap happens in their faces, when she’s not present, happened episodes earlier or later. Ya got Animaestro and The Party Crasher. Earlier you could say Frozer. And later you can say Crocoduel, Gabriel Agreste (The Episode) or Rocketear. I could say of even later, Evolution, Intuition, or non canon Plastic Special. There also exists The NY Special or Shanghai Special. Even The Christmas Special where Ladybug completely disregards what Adrien said and proceeded to attempt merking Santa Claus (which could have been a normal Parisian). I could list many more episodes but nah.

They are disgustingly choosey and are…

Accidents.

They are the same bozos that are aware or should know that a woman died because people chased her to her death for wanting to see more of Lila. Tried to deal with it but you know, unfortunately… And now (or rather since that leak happened,) pests want to disregard what Lila said to Gabriel Agreste in Oni-Chan and desire Lila to be a predo and encourage that egregious thing or thought to become canon by writers and too many buffoons discard the ramifications of that and seem to want to be lame and ignore that what’s being said against her is disgusting.

It’s ultimate level of justifying their delusions because ignoring and let her go is too much work. Them believing their stupid actions to be righteous. They’re even more funny to me considering Miraculous Secrets Lila when Marinette (delusionally) believes she can Adrien could still save her (instead of leave her alone and not make things worse like Adrien said in the infamous episode).

These hotshots and scums.

They’ve set destruction in motion something can never undo.

Or that they set in motion what they don’t want to undo or stop.

This grotesque thirst to want to be inherently right against her while disregarding all else. They hated what was being twisted or done against Chloe & what happened to Chloe. They can sadly somewhat acknowledge that Marinette was the idiot to Kagami (but definitely mostly only at the end of Mr. Pigeon 72 because Kagami finally supported the cage coded ship). They somewhat can admit when Luka or mostly Juleka is being a punching bag. Despite all of that, they some reason are allergic to Lila and want Marinette to be predestined as right for all, ironically, which is amusing because that discards above what they can perceive and Adrien or Alya.

Due to their tunnel vision of only seeing Lila, they should just admit they love Gabuse, Maribuse, Adult Abuse Apologia winners, Derision, Deflagration, Revolution, Recreation, Omnicidal Victor and his apologists. How about they also admit that they are in awe for Tomoe Tsurugi, Audrey Bourgeois, Nathalie failing Emilie and Emilie’s legacy, Both Andres, Theo Barbot.

And how about they plea to adoring Adrien Kagami Juleka Luka Chloe and Ironically Marinette suffering. How about they also admit that they secretly love the writers they say they say they hate, Jeremy Zag, and Ezra Weisz. They should make it easier for themselves and confess that they secretly love that incident that made Cristina Vee leave Twitter. How about they finally just announce they are happy that wife to be, never will be.

Sigh... It’s just who many are & it will never go away.

Brave New World

This idea came to me today and it is kinda ridiculous but folks probably realize by now that I’m weak for portals and time-jumps so have a self-indulgent twisted version of Frozer. 

“This is your chance to fix things.” Paon looked back at the glowing portal. “Make a different choice this time. It could make all the difference.”

Ladybug stared at the crumbling world around them and gave him a steady nod. “I’ll keep Hawkmoth from taking Chat. I won’t hesitate. I know what kind of monster he is now.”

“Be careful.”

She gave him a small smile. “I’ll try.” She glanced at their other teammates’ backs, holding off the onslaught of akumas. “Here’s to a brighter future,” she hoped, closing her eyes and stepping into the portal.

There was a jerk somewhere around her middle and a loud popping sound and then her back was slamming into a hard surface and she was sliding down to the ice cold ground.

Marinette blinked. She wasn’t transformed anymore and this definitely wasn’t the Agreste mansion. Her butt and upper back throbbed and she realized she was sitting on ice. That wasn’t right. Paon was supposed to send her back a few months to when Hawkmoth had stripped Chat Noir of his ring. She should’ve been staring down Gabriel Agreste, not--

Her heart stopped. A teenage Adrien was looking down at her hopefully, holding his hand out to help her up. He looked so young, so...different. Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong.

Luka was there too, his hand reaching out by Adrien’s and Marinette had forgotten him like this. Had it really been that long ago?

She knew too much time was passing without action and opened her mouth to speak when Kagami slid between the boys and helped her up. Marinette hardly registered the words she spoke quietly in her ear. They hardly mattered now. This was all a ghost of a memory.

She made a quick excuse and escaped to the bathroom. She stared at her reflection in shock, a girl half a decade younger looking back at her. “Tikki?” she asked breathlessly, relieved when the kwami immediately zipped out from her purse. “Please tell me you know this isn’t right. We were supposed to go back a few months, not a few years!”

Tikki bowed her head. “I’m afraid Paon sent us back too far.”

“How do we undo it?!”

“I don’t know that we can, Marinette. We don’t even know where the Peacock Miraculous is right now and Paon won’t come to us for a few more years still. You were in university when he showed up, remember?”

“I can’t just stay like this! I don’t want to be a teenager again!” She glared at her reflection. “This is worse than what any akuma could do.”

“Marinette!”

“Well, it is!”

“You’re being too dramatic. Let’s look at it this way. There are lots of things we can change now. You know who Hawkmoth is, for one,” Tikki pointed out.

“Yeah, who Chat is too.” 

As if on cue, there was a knock on the door. “Hey, Marinette, are you okay?” Adrien called.

“I’m fine!” she yelled back quickly and then lowered her voice. “Crap, crap, crap. This isn’t good. We don’t reveal ourselves for another couple of years. How am I supposed to pretend that long?!”

“You don’t necessarily have to,” Tikki mused. “Paon said to make different choices, right? Who knows what could change things for the better now!”

“So I should just go out there and tell Adrien that I’m Ladybug? That went over so well last time.” She rolled her eyes. “No, I need some time to think and decide what to change for the better between us.”

She heard Adrien calling her name as ice began to cover the bathroom. “I forgot about this guy,” she sighed. “Let’s get this over with.”

It was interesting, being in her younger body again. She didn’t have quite the control and agility she was used to but it wasn’t bad. At least she hadn’t been thrown all the way back to her beginning as Ladybug. In this form, she had a decent handle on what she was doing. 

Chat Noir was angry at her and she was trying to remember why. Probably something with their relationship. It tended to be on and off. Wait. They didn’t know each other’s identities yet so there was no relationship. Ah, this was the time period when he couldn’t accept being friends then. That hadn’t been fun. He would get upset and then she would get upset and it was a vicious cycle they’d looped until maturity kicked in and things settled. Maybe she could change that this time around.

Frozer had been easy to take down even distracted as she was. It wasn’t long before the four teens were back in the skating rink and taking off their skates. Marinette watched Kagami. She’d never let herself get close to the other girl because of Adrien and that seemed so silly now. Even if they never became best friends, there was no reason they couldn’t be amicable. 

“I wanted to say thanks for helping me up earlier,” Marinette began, suddenly feeling shy. Great, so being in her younger body again also meant dealing with those pesky teenage feelings she thought she was past. 

“You looked like you needed it,” Kagami answered, eyeing her curiously. 

“I did. Not exactly graceful on these.” She lifted the skates in her hand with a small laugh. “I’d like to keep trying though. I had fun today. You sure look like you know what you’re doing out there.”

“My father used to take me ice skating,” she answered in a clipped tone that let Marinette know that wasn’t a topic allowed for further conversation.

“Ah, um, that’s nice then. Maybe you could help me sometime.”

Kagami frowned for a moment. “Maybe.”

“I feel like we got off on the wrong foot and I’d really like to change that,” Marinette smiled.

The other girl seemed to consider it and nodded. “I’m sure I could teach you how to stay upright at least.”

“That seems like a really good first step.”

“Hey, Marinette, are you ready?” Luka held out his hand to take her skates and she gave them to him with a flushed smile. 

“Thanks. See you around, Kagami. Bye, Adrien,” she called with a wave before turning to Luka. “Thanks so much for coming today.”

“No problem. It was a good time. Sorry about that fall,” he winced. “I guess I shouldn’t have let go of your hand, huh?” He reached for her hand with his free one and Marinette almost pulled it away but stopped herself. His hand was warm despite the cool room and she smiled as their fingers linked.

Why hadn’t this happened before? She couldn’t remember. Luka was cute and sweet. He could be a little odd but so could she. They returned their skates and walked out to the front of the building. 

Now she could remember.

She saw Kagami’s eyes cut to her as she and Adrien spoke by her car. Marinette watched her kiss his cheek and could feel the faint echo of jealousy and defeat. It wasn’t an intense feeling, more like an old memory you’re finally strong enough to take out, dust off, and look at without getting sad. Adrien watched her leave before going to his own car.

“You should go talk to him.”

Marinette blinked up at Luka in surprise. Right. It was almost falling back into place like a movie she’d watched before but she kept falling a scene behind. She’d chased after Adrien’s car with the intention of confessing her love. It’d been embarrassing and led nowhere. And...

She looked back up at Luka. He was smiling but it didn’t quite reach his eyes and he dropped her hand without her realizing. She’d never gone out with him again after that, had she? They saw each other around; they were friendly. But this was it. This was the moment that it was decided nothing would happen between them. 

“This is your chance to fix things.” Paon looked back at the glowing portal. “Make a different choice this time. It could make all the difference.”

“Actually, I was hoping we could ride home together? If you want,” she blushed. 

Luka’s eyes lit up and she saw a genuine smile overtake the one he’d been wearing before. “I’d really like that, yeah.” He took her hand again and Marinette squeezed his fingers gently, falling into step beside him.

Different choices, huh? This was going to be a brave new world.

MIRACULOUS LADYBUG SPOILERS

Some months ago, I think when The Dark Owl premiered, someone asked Thomas Austruc on Twitter why Adrien or Marinette didn't open their eyes during the suits-off scene and Thomas answered something along the lines of "Oh, of course, because the reveal, a major plot point of the series, is going to happen in a random episode in the middle of the second season."

Welp, as lovesquare trash, this episode was amazing

It had good stakes, excellent drama. And it made me enjoy every scene with the blue boy

I loved every minute of it.

I liked the fight, I enjoyed the hilarious antics. It was done right.

When Kagami and Alya had a little more screen time they insulted their characters, however when they give Luka's character more screen time they don't even say a half word. I don't know how you think but I'm tired of this fandom and above all I'm tired of the lukanette stan of their insults towards Adrien and Alya. Sorry for the outburst.

no need to apologize, i'm of the same opinion. i think i'm over it, for the most part, and i happen to care very little about what other people think re: ml, but the adoration for luka baffled me because i couldn't understand it, and i hate it when i can't understand something.

here is a summary of my findings:

- as marinette is the main character and her pov is prioritized, people tend to project themselves onto her A LOT. you get people salting on chat noir not because of the context of chat noir's actions, but because they personally don't feel attracted to chat noir, and assume that marinette doesn't either. you get people resenting adrien because he doesn't return marinette's affections, which makes her 'suffer'. the show itself sometimes props up marinette's pain while neglecting adrien's, for example the episode the puppeteer 2, in which the fact that adrien's friends were hanging out with him because each of them wanted something out of him was glossed over, while marinette's heartbreak took central focus. just notice how people tend to make chat blanc about her and her only;

- a big part of the audience struggles to imagine how certain situations look in the eyes of other characters;

- predominantly female audience identifies more easily with marinette;

- all of this leads to double standards. people salt on adrien for continuing to pursue ladybug, nobody salts on marinette for continuing to pursue adrien after finding out that he's in love with someone else. i talked about it a bit more here;

- glaciator, syren, frozer, malediktator, all happening within one season, and then chameleon airing a month after the season 2 finale. some people had a problem with all of these episodes, some with a few, some with one, but it generated the adrien salt community, and s3 brought the alya salters forth;

- i do think that adrien in particular is too mysterious and confusing for the audience;

- luka is a great character for projection. he didn't even have a backstory until s4. his personality is agreeing with whatever marinette says, while seemingly having no desires of his own besides 'make marinette happy'. in some twisted version of the world, this turns into an example of how ~healthy lukanette is, even though in healthy relationships both people have their own unique personalities and motivations, and that can lead to conflicts sometimes. luka never has conflicts with marinette, therefore he's better;

- the guitar boi thing? the cringy love confessions? he seems chill, mild-mannered and nice, without much complications or contradictions, and that works for some people;

- an overall very weird obession with ~~justice, seriousness, hard work, which just turns into revenge in the fandom's hands; i've described this point of view as very american in nature;

- some people love to turn marinette into a victim and act like all she does is suffer. i've even seen salt towards her parents. if you know a thing about tom and sabine, you'd know how insane that is. nobody is allowed to criticize marinette in-universe. everyone must bow to her for some reason, and when characters don't do that and instead act like normal human beings, they get salted on for 'mistreating' marinette;

- a lot of second-hand embarrassment over how marinette acts when adrien is around leads many to prefer lukanette and assume that luka is the better match, when the point is that if she was in love with luka, she'd be a mess around him too. if you are a hardcore marinette stan/adrien salter, you probably think that the show ~~~humiliates and punishes marinette for her crush on adrien, because you're so into your own goddang self-projection that you don't see that she's the main focus of the show and as such, the writers don't hate her;

- an interesting point (credit to @flightfoot because i read it from her first) is that a lot of the people who dislike marinette have lost interest in ml and no longer keep up with the show, so marinette gets the least amount of salt. can you imagine adrien or alya pulling what she did in ephemeral and getting away with it?

- a lot of victim-blaming of adrien from people who have never experienced parental abuse and demand that he 'grows a backbone'; annoyance about his lack of agency in the show (as if marinette is investigating who hawk moth is, mhm); a lot of anger that the writers want people to empathize with his situation;

- kagami is the least feminine female character and is interested in adrien, adrien is only allowed to be interested in and have a relationship with marinette. fandom logic;

- alya gets interpreted as pushy and a bad friend even when she isn't hurting marinette, because alya knows that her best friend has troubles with being in her head too much, but would regret it for life if she never acts on her crush. however, that would require a bit of a nuance on the situation, so alya gets salted on;

- the show repeatedly painting luka in a positive light only, while alya and kagami have had plenty of unsympathetic moments, and alya's trustworthiness is even questioned, while luka's isn't even up for debate, yes, in the show, not just in the fandom.

so... yeah. it's a combination of a lot of factors. i'm pretty sure that i've missed some things. like you, i'm very tired of it, but for me, personally, understanding how this happened helped me deal with it, and now it doesn't bother me as much, perhaps because i try to avoid it or at least ignore if it i stumble upon it. it doesn't hurt to have a bit of an aggrandized self-belief in your own views. you can't change people's minds on the internet if they're hellbent on a version of reality they prefer and exist in an echo chamber that only supports their views. and you shouldn't bother either, anon. just cultivate who you want to follow from the fandom and make your weird posts, if that's what you're into - that's how i deal with it. :)

It’s not just you, absolutely not. I’m just disturbed when I see reactions like that. Like, if Chat Noir wanted to get out his rage, there are other ways of doing it other than literally busting up some rando’s property.

I presume these are the same people who cheered Chat on in “Frozer” when Ladybug tried to reject him as nicely as possible (especially when, in a previous episode, he said he understood her feelings) and he got huffy at her mid-battle.

Lukagami should be canon ✨

So I’ve been thinking...Luka and Kagami should be a ship! I know they aren’t canon and it might sound unlikely at first thought.

But let’s break it down because I believe they could be a really strong couple!

Opposites attract

Luka and Kagami have SOME similarities, but overall, they’re pretty opposite from each other.

Kagami is more uptight because of her strict mother, Luka is more laidback because his mother is permissive. Kagami is into a very tactical hobby - fencing, Luka is into a very creative hobby - playing guitar. Kagami dresses more formally, Luka has blue hair and skinny jeans.

We can see that Kagami doesn’t like being forced to be unsocial, she wants to have a sense of freedom and make more friends. Luka has that sense of freedom and he could help her make new friends, sneak out more, and develop more hobbies (like music) that bring out her creative side.

Additionally, Kagami could help Luka be more tactful and focused. She could easily encourage him to be more cautious of his caring heart and come to terms with the fact that Marinette doesn’t have mutual romantic feelings for him. She could also introduce him to her traditions and traditional events she goes to.

Their similarities

These two are both very honest, passionate, and caring people.

Kagami and Luka are both very sure of their feelings for Adrien and Marinette; they’ve both confessed. Despite their disappointment knowing that Adrien and Marinette are very indecisive, when it comes down to it, they just want their loves to be happy. You think about it too, these two mainly seem to like Adrien and Marinette because they have similar interests BUT they also haven’t really put themselves out there to meet other potential love interests. They both need to branch out beyond Adrien and Marinette.

They’re both super caring of their love interests and their families. Both are very up front about it and have become superheroes to protect them.

Kagami and Luka are also very sure of themselves. They’re both confident in who they are and know what they desire. Kagami is very passionate about fencing, Luka is very passionate about music. They both have passions to share.

How it could become canon

At first glance, it might seem like there’s no way these two could have on screen time together, BUT I’ll tell you how it’d be possible.

Luka is already friends with Marinette and Adrien, and so is Kagami - they already have mutual friends. They’ve met before in Frozer and Desperada but haven’t really interacted one on one (and also under Kagami’s assumption that Luka is Marinette’s boyfriend).

At this point, they already know about each other’s feelings - Kagami likes Adrien, Luka likes Marinette. Obviously, neither Adrigami nor Lukanette will work because there isn’t mutual feelings and it’s already made VERY clear that Marinette and Adrien will be together forever. So after getting turned down, they don’t really know what to do with themselves. Perhaps Adrien and Marinette take action in introducing them to each other. OR they somehow meet on their own terms (like if they’re both hanging out with Adrien and Marinette at the same time).

Kagami and Luka get to talking and develop a good friendship that leads its way into romantic feelings. They also would already have that empathy for one another in the way of how they both got turned down by people they loved.

(Also, completely random, but their ship name works perfectly ? Like, it’s Luka’s full name and Kagami’s full name that flow well together into one name - no letters even need to be cut off.)

Final thoughts

1) They’re opposite, but in a way that will help them grow instead of butt heads.

2) They have similarities in their personalities that would create that perfect chemistry.

3) They’ll both get turned down by Adrien and Marinette, anyhow - they could meet, and then confide and relate to each other.

4) honestly, it’d make a fantastic plot twist in the show.

It all feels like cheap tease, is the problem, right? Because although the show now challenges its status quo slightly more often, we all know it’ll never dare to have anything happen between Adrichat and Alyarouge (and they’re cowards for that).

Had this been a show in which every episode brought a new twist and a notable change to the status quo, that trailer would have made me quite hyped, but yeah, Ugh.

Submitted Prompt: Marinette's Dark Side

Occurs after the "Ladybug" episode.

Inspired by few prompts and the fanon idea of an Akuma (somehow, it's Lila who was Akumatised for months for some reason and no one was able to discover her) 'corrupting' the class and turning them into jerks, but with a crucial twist.

The Akuma, Hidden Darkness, does not make people act as jerks, but they create a clone of the person affected by their power, and said clone will have all the memories of the original, but leans more into thinking and behaving in the worst ways the original person can think of and understand.

(i.e. if a nice and gentle kid was affected, their dark side will just cause some mischeif and demand some attention from those around them, but someone who understands more in life and has more problems will have their dark side become much less caring and gentle, and will be much more villainous, but how they express it is related to the original person's morals and their way in dealing with life and emotions).

And Marinette gets hit due to either being too close when the Akuma appeared or Adrien pulled another "Frozer/Glaciator" stunt and she was too distressed and distracted to evade.

And her dark side appears, escatic at finally being let loose, no longer needing to be a "role model", or do anything at all. It's time for her to finally stop caring about anyone else and solely cater to her own desires, good and bad alike. And the first thing shee does then is to outright attack Marinette and knock her unconscious and take the earrings for herself.

She of course makes sure to drag both of them into a safe place with no one there so they won't discover her identity first.

And now, Paris has a loose Ladybug holder, who is deceptive, self-serving, and has the ability to trick Fu and take the miraculouses so SHE can protect them better, or destroy them, seeing that the only reason Hawkmoth and Mayura exist is because the kwamies are apparently unable to stop their miraculous' holders.

She might as well take Chat Noir's ring, and punch Fu a few times for them throwing their baggage on her and harassing her without any apology of course.

How does Dark Marinette's actions change the status quo? Will Hawkmoth be defeated by her if he thought that this situation is a good opportunity for him to reappear again? Or will he be blindsided somehow? And how does Marinette deal with the fact that her 'dark' version caused this much chaos?

Will she finally get that what happened is for the better? Or will she still obey the brainwashing and indoctorination she was fed by those around her and blame herself for not being 'capable enough'?

It had taken quite a bit of courage for Marinette to go up to both Luka and Alix on separate occasions, asking them on a date not only with her but as well as with each other. She had gotten them to agree to a date at the skating rink today. Right now, she had just seen the two of them, standing in the entrance way of the ice rink with the skates hanging from their grasps.

Marinette took a deep breath, approaching them. “Uh, hey!” Both turned to look at her. Luka immediately picking up on her anxiety. “Woah, you good? You look terrified.” Alix hummed lightly, “You’re acting like this is a test.” Marinette laughed nervously, “Kinda is. Sorta.”

The skater sighed, “Go put on your skates. We’ll meet up with you. Ok? Relax a little bit.” Marinette sighed quietly, worried that the girl was becoming annoyed with her. But she went to the bleachers, standing right next to the door and tying the laces into a knot. The thin metal on the bottom of the skates offered little support to her as she stepped towards the entrance to the rink. Immediately she lost her footing as her ankle twisted to the side, but she never hit the ground. Instead, two hands had grabbed her wrist from behind and pulled her back up.

She found herself looking up at Luka, who had an amused look. “Don’t try to walk without holding onto something.” He helped her onto the rink, him doing small movements on the ice. Alix entered from the opposite side, moving easily. “This is a lot more similar to roller skating than I had expected.” She said slowly. “I’m pretty sure it is. Just different terrain.”

“I, don’t really know how to skate. Could you two help me?”

So I rewatched Frozer today, and holy hell, I’m not even sure how insanely Lukanette-strong this episode this, to the point that I don’t even know how aware of this even Astruc is? And I don’t only mean the romantic ice rink scene, I mean the episode as a whole serves as a huge sign that very strongly favors Lukanette and also Adrigami, and yes, I say this even considering the ending with Marinette running after Adrien and leaving Luka alone there at the ice rink entrance and even with her eyeing Kagami and Adrien a huge amount of time at the rink. Because it’s hers and Adrien’s words that actually count and explain some things a bit better, including some comments from Luka and Kagami.

This is gonna be a long and analytical ride, so get ready, my folks!  ♡ * cracks knuckles *

1. After being rejected by Ladybug yet again, Adrien decides to gave a chance to another girl he spends a lot of time with and kind of likes and decides that it’s time to finally stop suppressing those feelings. Because when Plagg suggests it’s better to move on to someone else, he doesn’t say anything along the lines of “But I don’t have feelings for Kagami” or “But I will always love only Ladybug”, etc., no, Adrien actually says “Why should it be different with Kagami? Maybe I just have the wrong technique?” - meaning, he actually is envisioning a relationship her and he does see her as someone he could or does care about in a romantic way, he’s just afraid that, since Ladybug’s rejections kind of bruised his self-confidence a bit, why would Kagami do anything other than eventually reject him as well? So he doesn’t, as in a few other occasions, explicitly state that he has no romantic feelings for this person (khm, khm, as he does when teased or asked about his feelings for, among other people, a certain someone else), he lets Plagg know that he has actually already considered this possibility and that he is not against it at all, but rather just fears the same ending as with Ladybug.

2. I think that it’s extremely important to take the first note in mind when viewing the scene where he confides to Marinette that he needs help with a girl. Because, it does sound rather applicable to both Marinette and Kagami when Adrien describes, very clearly in a loving fashion in which you wouldn’t describe your best buddy-bud pal, the girl he likes with dark silky hair, deep eyes, with whom he’s been just friends but “...lately things have been different.” And as similar as this all is to Marinette, his close friend for a LONGER time, and much longer at that, than Kagami, with similar features, etc., he does not decide to switch his focus/target on Mari. He doesn’t seem to even consider her as a person he could romantically care for (not counting Chat Blanc when he ‘suddenly’ became aware of random heaps of feelings for her that he’s supposedly had all along when in fact, he’s never shown or said anything about it and he only ‘realizes’ this when he realizes she’s the other half of his beloved Ladybug). He, very clearly, chooses Kagami as his new focus. Out of all of his female friends and people he’s known longer than Kagami, people with whom he’s shared some sweet moments with even, like with Marinette, he still chooses Kagami and this still isn’t enough for him this entire time to consider Marinette as the goal of his new target transition. As much as it would make arguably more sense to a lot of people, and as much as he clearly likes the type of girls like her, appearance-wise, he still doesn’t choose her.

3. There is something very important Marinette says during her talk with her friends. “I always jumble my words around him, so how could I even manage going out on a date? I think we’re actually meant to be friends, whenever I talk to him as a friend, I actually hardly stammer at all, that’s a sign right there, right?” And YES, this is actually a very mature thing for a character in a cartoon, rather than in a more ‘serious’ TV show to say because it’s actually a very mature way of explaining which types of emotions are actually healthier and better for a basis of a proper romantic relationship. And not being able to talk to this person hardly at all for more than a year and getting reactions akin to panic attacks when this person even touches or looks or says something in your direction is something that’s cute for a few days... Weeks, maybe. But the entire time? Oof. And I know that she, I’m guessing, gets rid of her awkwardness when starting to date him in Chat Blanc, at least I hope that’s what’s implied, but a foundation like this to a relationship is not necessarily a really good one... Not when her behavior towards him shows clear signs of obsession rather than love in an alarming amounts of moments, and when her reactions to him are mainly her being stressed out, insecure and panicked increasingly around him through time instead of decreasingly, for well over a year. Now, this is all perhaps too realistic for the judgement of a TV animated series, but Astruc & co. can be serious with certain topics when they want to and portraying this as such only to use it as a comic-reel type of a cutesy, dorky, pre-dating crushing or whatever just makes no sense and ends up looking at the very least weird and at the worst unhealthy for our girl.

Because she can only really be herself with Adrien, and not even that entirely, when they’re just being friends. When anything more is suggested, that’s all at least partially lost, which, once again, oof... With Luka, however, even though she gets those normal shy moments when he looks at her a certain way, makes her blush or compliments her, she feels comfortable enough to remain herself pretty much the entire. time. she’s. with. him. Which is trough several points in the show even more so encouraged by Luka. Luka who fell for Marinette, the klutzy, shy, adorkable and supposedly ‘less perfect’ half of Ladybug. He didn’t need to know she’s Ladybug to love her. He fell in love, actual romantic love with her strongly and quickly just because of *claps* who *claps* she *claps* is. Shyness and clumsiness and all. And he just generally seems to really care about her happiness and well being and is capable of better assessing her emotions than even her best friend.

Even at the ice rink, when she gets twisted up and nervous in front of Adrien and even subconsciously mean towards the fact that he’s here with Kagami (The entire flat out “you have to let her fall thing”, what was up with that?? I mean, she corrected herself but, whut?? That wasn’t like Marinette at all!), to which Adrien is a bit confused and perhaps slightly worried but Luka takes care of her and takes the control of the situation so easily, just to make her feel better. “Try to be natural. Go with the flow and listen to the rhythm.”, and then he softly adds, “Just follow my lead.” , and Marinette, even though slightly smitten, seems to at least feel better and instantly a bit more composed, which than turns to her being completely relaxed with him on the ice. And yet he’s just the second choice/rebound guy and she’s supposed to end up with the other, arguably more confusing and problematic choice (at least viewed from a realistic human perspective?) BIG oof. Not a good sign and not a good message for kids out there, tbh if this is how they portray love and soulmates and how they portray what seems to be nice and lovely, but actually won’t be the ‘truest’ love in the end (meaning, for the latter, they obviously are, ironically, using Luka and Kagami - the HEALTHIER choices)... 

4. Same goes for Adrien and his feelings for Ladybug and the comparison of his romantic dynamic with Ladybug and then with Kagami. Because his feelings for Ladybug only ever seem to get him down, he can’t even be happy for her that she has someone else she cares about, usually a big sign of just being ‘in love’ with a person or idolizing the person rather than ‘loving’ the person. Which, okay, this is a cartoon, and perhaps it shouldn’t matter, but unless the whole freakin’ thing is taken to the extreme and portrayed as one giant comedy crack cartoon and as long as some themes are adequately realistically addressed than this ends up as something that’s realistically understood as well and, once again, serves as a really bad example of what’s supposed to be the beginning of the ‘soulmate’ type of ‘true love’. While with Kagami, he just seems more... complete. More himself. When he comes in front of her slightly nervous, unsure of how to ask her for her hand, she’s ends up being the counter-balance to him (much like Luka with Mari) by calmly joking with him to make him feel more comfortable, tying his laces and taking him to the ice, so no further worries or stress necessary.

She’s like the yin to his yang, really, and her composure balances his more emotional, quirky, happy-go-lucky personality really wonderfully, even in moments when he needs an antithesis like this to help him because he’s feeling in doubt or down. And even now, he accepts her hand, smiles, and the situation just goes so well and nice for him because she, like several other times as well, was able to really perfectly compliment his personality with hers in a way that achieves both of them being happy, themselves and relaxed with each other. And Adrien sometimes does this for her, too, and I just think, much like Lukanette, that this is a really sweet and nice example of a proper young romantic relationship and it breaks my heart that, yet again, the better, more natural choice that makes the characters more happier is the secondary one that’s going to most likely end up with someone like Kagami and Luka be cast back into the friendzone and aside for Adrinette to... somehow? happen again.

5. Much like Adrien’s reaction to Kagami as someone new that he has feelings for, it was the same when Tikki questioned Marinette why she was upset. She didn’t say “Well, because Adrien only sees Kagami”, “Because it hurts me a bit to see them together”, etc., oddly enough, she doesn’t even address her feelings towards Adrien here, she immediately and only says, “I like Luka. He’s really nice, but... do you think he’s just like Adrien, just a friend?” By which she actually a) admits that she likes him, most likely as more than a friend due to the next part where she’s worriedly asking Tikki if, b) Luka is just like Adrien towards her, ‘just a friend’. Which is a huge thing and, once again, this could just be Astruc & co.’s way of messing with fans to stir up drama, but by now, this show, and these ships, have had way too many weird and not that healthy or the best examples of ‘romantic’ feelings and crushes for it to just constantly, 24/7 be a random array of stirring up the fans. I mean, knowing Astruc, it’s possible, but once again, if they’re repeatedly doing this with the love hexagon and the majority of these things, including the love square interactions shouldn’t be taken entirely seriously, that’s a bit of a silly thing to do in a show that, like I said, can be more decent and serious when it wants to, and it’s a really immature thing of a bunch of adult writers to do rather than dealing with actual character relationships and personality developments. I mean, I may sound harsh but, come on.

6. “There may be a certain chill now between us.” Once again, I just really don’t like the whole passive aggressive, jealous, pouty behavior that Chat displays in front of Ladybug to, supposedly, try to cause some reaction out of her in his favor and all while separating from her due to this when literal PARIS is at stake here atm. “We don’t always have to do everything together, you know! It’s not like we’re a couple!” That, especially in a situation like this is actually a very manipulative to do, because it seems that the other person deserves guilt-tripping and to feel bad simply for the fact that they are entitled to their own choices, that they simply don’t reciprocate your romantic feelings for them and that they want to be friends but just feel uncomfortable with you advancing with them so frequently even when knowing what the situation is. and while it’s okay and cute-ish for young crushes when it happens once or twice, this was far from being the only time he’s been like that with her and, for the who knows what time in this post: that ain’t love. That ain’t a good example. And that ain’t romantic or cute in the slightest. As someone who dated a guy who acted like that on a daily level, this is not something that should be romanticized or encouraged, but that’s just my opinion.

7. “You should go over and talk to him...” I know this goes without saying because a lot of people already really praise Luka for how selflessly and maturely he dealt with this, but I just have to add this because he is just. so. good to Marinette! And puts her emotions and needs in front of himself every time, even when it means she needs to potentially deal with some things in a way that might hurt him, he cares more about her and her getting her own happiness or at least closure rather than forcing his affections on her or insisting even on the smallest of things, like riding the subway together home. Nope, he cares, in a surprisingly mature and kind way, more about her in this moment, and in so many others, but I won’t elaborate in to too much details like I didn’t in some examples above either because this post is focused mainly around this episode.

And that, my dears, is the tea. Or at least my potentially overly-invested-in-this-show opinion.

Welp, hello all. I’ve been a wallflower in the Miraculous fandom since it got started. I haven’t really written fanfic or published AUs or head-cannons online since middle school, but things this season have finally pushed me to the point where I guess I’m writing again. I’ve been so inspired by @imthepunchlord , @apex-primus, @gale-of-the-nomads  , @zoe-oneesama, @lenoreofraven and @miraculouscontent that I guess I’m here with my own post-chameleon salt au.

Buckle up kiddos, here we go.

So I’m calling this the Reine Ruse AU. I’ve started writing a fic, but finals are coming up so I might not really get to sink my teeth into it for another month or so. Basically, here’s what goes down.

-During Chameleon, Chloe makes it clear that she doesn’t trust Lila and attempts to call the class out for being hypocritical. It obviously doesn’t go well, but Marinette hears and it surprises her.

-Chameleon follows pretty closely after the Queen’s Battle arc and Heroes’ Day, so perhaps Chloe has been noticeably trying to be a better person and Marinette/Ladybug has been keeping an eye on this and can see her trying.

-A few weeks have passed since Chameleon and Lila keeps escalating. The seats never got switched back, so Marinette is still stuck alone in the back of the room. She’s having a miserable time and she really needs to talk to somebody about things. She doesn’t want to bother her parents because they’re really busy with things in the bakery and she doesn’t want to trouble them. She obviously can’t talk to Alya about things right now as she’s still firmly on Lila’s side. Tikki is wonderful support, but she’s a tiny god and despite her many years of life and experiences she just doesn’t really understand. Frozer happened pretty recently in this AU, maybe even after Heroes’ Day. In any case, Frozer and Glaciator are pretty fresh in Marinette’s mind and she really loves her partner as a friend, but she’s getting a bit concerned about looking to Chat for support as Ladybug. She really doesn’t want to believe it, but some of his past behavior is making her question if he’ll think she owes him something if she relies on him like that.

-She’s not getting enough sleep and is spending a lot of time running over the rooftops with no particular destination in mind as Ladybug, just trying to forget what’s going on. She’d never admit it, but sometimes Tikki’s reassurances can get to be too much when it’s plain that no one else is there for her and she needs support but not that kind and she just wants to be alone.

-One night her feet bring her to the rooftop of the Grand Paris Hotel. It’s raining and she’s been running around for hours and she’s crying and tired and she doesn’t know why she’s here, but she starts thinking of how much better Chloe has gotten and even if she doesn’t like Marinette, she adores Ladybug and goddammit she just really needs somebody right now.

-Before she can second guess herself, she’s knocked on Chloe’s balcony door.

The last thing Chloe Bourgeois would have expected when she woke up that morning was for Ladybug to knock on her balcony door in the middle of the night. Nonetheless, she was nothing if not adaptable, especially for her idol. She adjusted her silk pajama robe and ran for the door to let Ladybug in.

“Ladybug! It’s so good to see you? Is there an akuma? Do you need my help? Did you stop by to say hello to your favorite civili---” Chloe cut herself off. The darkness had prevented her from noticing it, but the light that spilled out of her suite made it abundantly clear -- Ladybug was crying.

“Can I come in?” the heroine’s voice was unusually small.

Wordlessly Chole moved out of the way. Ladybug took short, sad steps past her, pausing listlessly when she reached the middle of the room.

Oh god, what was she supposed to do?! As far as Chloe knew, there was no established protocol for dealing with crying superheroes bursting in on one in one’s pajamas. And that didn’t even touch the fact that Ladybug’s eyes were so much more blue this close and Chloe was in her very short and very thin pajamas. She shook her head. It was apparent that Ladybug needed her, and if Queen Bee couldn’t help, then Chloe Bourgeois would have to do. She hesitantly walked over to Ladybug.

“Do you want to talk about it?” The words were uncharacteristically quiet and soft. Chloe rifled through her memories, desperately trying to remember how Adrien’s mother had consoled her after so many tears in her childhood. It hurt, to think back to then, but if anyone was worth it, Ladybug was. Ladybug believed in her when no one else did and she’d never admit just how good that made her feel inside.

Ladybug turned towards her, tears still leaking out of her large, bluebell eyes. Without warning, she shot forward and wrapped her arms tightly around Chloe, breaking into incoherent sobs. It felt like forever before the spotted heroine stopped shaking like a leaf, tears drying to sniffles. Chloe awkwardly kept rubbing circles onto her back the whole time, hugging Ladybug as best as she could even as her mind whirled at a hundred miles an hour. What in the ever-loving-fuck was happening? Who could have made Ladybug so upset? It was a good thing she didn’t have her miraculous or she’d venom whatever bastard did this to her… Then again, she could probably still claw someone’s eyes out outside of the suit as well… No, Ladybug needed a shoulder to cry on, not a homicidal sometimes-superhero on the warpath.

Chloe took a deep breath in and maneuvered them so that they were sitting down on one of the plush sofas in her suite. She moved to extricate herself from Ladybug and dammit if the way she tried to cling to Chloe with a small whimper didn’t give her feelings.

She awkwardly cleared her throat. “You need to stay hydrated. You’ve been -- I’m going to call for some refreshments. Did you want anything in particular?”

Ladybug wiped her eyes on the back of a spotted glove. “Cookies, if you have them,” she said quietly. “I’ve been out for hours, I need to recharge.”

Chloe nodded, not quite thinking of the magnitude of that statement and picked up the phone at the side of her bed. She didn’t even wait for whoever was on the other end to say hello. “Yes, I need a mug of warm milk and a plate of cookies as quickly as possible. Understood?” She hung up as soon as it was clear that someone had heard her and went back over to Ladybug. “It should be here in a few minutes.” Ladybug nodded silently.

Chloe sighed and braced herself. Clearly, Ladybug needed someone to talk to and for some unknown reason, she’d come to her of all people, so she was going to have to do her best. This really wasn’t her strong suit. “Alright,” she said briskly, breaking the silence. “As many lovely qualities as I have, I have to admit that I’m wondering why you came here tonight. Clearly, you’re upset. Why not talk to that mangy alley cat about it? Or a friend from the other side of the mask? As much as it pains me to admit, I haven’t been… the best person in the past. It seems like there’s someone out there who could give you a hell of a lot better advice about whatever it is that’s bothering you.”

Chloe didn’t miss the way Ladybug flinched, first when she brought up Chat Noir and then civilian friends. Oh, something was definitely going on and somebody was sooooo going to pay for this.

Ladybug twisted her hands together. “I…. I can’t,” she said. “I… I don’t think I have any friends outside of the suit anymore.”

“What happened?” Chloe questioned, trying to make her voice as quiet and reassuring as possible. It felt like squeezing into a too-small shirt, but it must have worked because Ladybug continued.

“They betrayed me.” Her voice broke. “Rena Rouge, Carapace, I knew them both as civilians… I trusted them with the miraculous because they were my best friends. But they took the word of someone they barely know over me and they hate me.” She paused. “They were all I had. Before this year, I didn’t have any friends at all. They were my very first.” A watery smile broke over her face and vanished. “I tried so hard to be a good friend -- I didn’t want them to leave me alone again. I was just trying to protect them from being deceived and manipulated… Oh god, it hurts. It hurts so much.”

Fat tears rolled down Ladybug’s cheeks and Chloe’s heart about broke in her chest. If there was one thing that she understood so very well… She scooted closer to Ladybug and wrapped the heroine in as tight a hug as she could manage. She could feel as the shoulder of her robe was dampened by Ladybug’s tears.

-Needless to say, Chloe really comes through as a friend and confidant to Ladybug that night. Marinette doesn’t really plan to go back, but it felt so good to be listened to and seen for the first time in a long time that she just keeps dropping by Chloe’s balcony.

-Ladybug and Chloe get closer and Marinette is able to hold herself together better now that she has someone. Not that anybody really notices because she’s a bit of a social pariah, but she’s much nicer to Chloe at school.

-I can’t decide if this AU is gonna be romantic or platonic Chloenette, but maybe Chloe has been a (somewhat repressed) gay mess for Ladybug the whole time and shit her school nemesis is also kind of cute now that they’re not constantly fighting oh no. Alternatively, we get some A+ female friendships.

-Either way, Ladybug is a pretty much nightly visitor to Chloe’s house at this point. They paint each other's nails and watch TV and there is some altogether wholesome interaction. Chloe is proud that she’s managed to bring Ladybug’s smiles back and starts to gain confidence in what she’s able to do to make things better by herself, on her own power and without a miraculous.

-Things are kind of improving. Lila is still being awful, but it’s much easier for Marinette to deal with her now. Ladybug and Chat Noir’s partnership is still kind of strained with his flirting, but they’ve been managing. Ladybug has kind of just been ignoring the problem and Chat Noir because she doesn’t know how to handle it and she really does care about him and doesn’t enjoy breaking his heart. She just needs to find some way of communicating to him that she feels like he’s disrespecting her, but the akumas have been getting more intense and she can’t risk another repeat of Frozer if she confronts him, so she doesn’t really know what to do.

-Eventually, the Lucky Charm says that they need back up. The fox makes the most sense to take, but Marinette just can’t trust Alya anymore. There’s really only one person that comes to mind.

-“Chloe Bourgeois, this the miraculous of the fox. It grants the power of illusions. You will use it for the greater good and return it to me when the battle is finished.”

-And finally, we get to the point of this entire rambling mess as fox!Chloe, or Reine Ruse appears. I think that her suit would use brown as an accent rather than black like Rena Rouge’s so it could incorporate some gold piping as sort of a subtle shout out to her past as Queen Bee. Chloe is a sleek, sleek fox. I also totally have an image of her having like 9 real fox tails that spread out behind her like the skirt of a ball gown or something (she is both regal and dramatic as fuck). She can also move them and as she becomes more involved with the miraculous squad she likes to wrap them around Ladybug especially when she gets cold in the winter.

-Reine Ruse absolutely kills it as a hero her first time out. Chat’s like “wow, it’s like you’ve done this before!” Chloe, who has listened to how much grief and indecision that this cat is causing Ladybug is 100% not happy with Chat Noir and pretty much straight up ignores him. If she speaks, she’s probably passive-aggressively sassing him.

-Hawkmoth is sending out progressively more akumas and they’re stronger too. It gets to the point where the lucky charm calls for help during every fight and it’s getting really hard to escape to get the backup Miraculous. Marinette has a talk with Master Fu about Chloe and the fox, sticking up for Chloe and how much she’s grown and making a case for her to be a permanent member of the team. It takes a bit of convincing, but Master Fu eventually comes around.

-“Chloe, you can’t be Queen Bee anymore… But you’ve come such a long way since we met and I would be honored if you would fight by my side as Reine Ruse, permanently.”

-Chat is grateful for the help but has no idea what he’s apparently done to get on the new heroine’s shit list. The first time they patrol alone together, she gives him a thorough verbal lashing about how he’s been treating Ladybug and doesn’t leave until she’s sure he understands.

-Adrien begins to rethink his life choices. Plagg attempts to help as best he can.

-Maybe Chloe rescues Marinette as Reine Ruse or she decides to try to get closer to her in her superhero form because she thinks that she’s totally blown it in her civilian form. Marinette who knows what is going on is just so happy and proud of her best friend/maybe-future-girlfriend.

-Give me a Chloenette love square pls

-Obviously, Alya isn’t happy when there’s a new fox hero. She probably gets akumatized over it, let’s be honest. At least it’s a better reason than getting mad because some middle schooler says he could outrun a panther.

-Lila is probably able to manipulate this situation somehow. She might not even know she’s doing it. Alya asks why Ladybug didn’t pick Rena Rouge and Lila says that Ladybug was just being a bitch or something, idk.

-Chloe thinks it's weird that Alya is so up in arms about this. Maybe this is the start of her figuring Marinette out.

Gosh, this post got so freaking long. I might add more later if anyone is actually interested, lol. I was thinking that the miracusquad in this AU would eventually include bee!Kagami and turtle!Luka as I don’t think Alya or Nino would reach the point that Marinette could trust them with miraculouses again. She might forgive them, but trust is a fragile thing.

Thank you all for listening to my ranting. I hope that this was somewhat coherent. I’m sorry that it’s so long and so rambling, but I really haven’t been involved in fandom for a while. I’ll try my best and I hope to improve in the future!

ML Analysis: Love Rival: Why Kagami works but is still hated and why Luka doesn’t but is loved

Now this will be my most controversial Hot take, a lot of you already saw the title and are already organizing your complaints. I don't care, you are free to do so. 

In a previous post, I discussed what makes a good love rival and if you want a good explanation of that, click the in bold link. 

This is a VERY LONG POST, so I am posting a read more. I would love to hear your thoughts on this analysis. Do you agree? Do you disagree? Did you want to include something? Let me know.

Why Kagami Works as a Love Rival

Kagami Tsurugi was introduced in the episode Riposte, where she is established as a straightforward, no nonsense fencer that wants to be the best. 

Her introduction is solid, she establishes her base and what the audience is supposed to know about her from the getgo. We also get the impression that Kagami when introduced would be a rival to Adrien, as they are competing in Fencing, which makes for a nice twist when they end up getting along and Kagami begins the task of being a Love rival. She starts off as a foil for Adrien, but then the reveal is she is actually a character foil for Marinette.

What also helps Kagami is that the show is mainly from Marinette’s perspective, so we get to see Kagami as Marinette does, as someone that is competing for Adrien’s affections, cementing the Rival aspect of the Love rival. Kagami clashes with Marinette causing Marinette to in turn be more upfront with her feelings and push harder to try and win over Adrien. This is something a good rival does, pushing Marinette forward and making her have to try. This rival aspect of Kagami’s character give Marinette urgency, which is something that is needed in order to drive Marinette towards a conclusion, whether it is to pursue Adrien or move on. 

Now as a love interest, Kagami establishes her relationship with Adrien in a different way then Marinette. Kagami’s straightforward nature allowed her to tell Adrien how she felt much earlier on, she pushes and asserts herself. This contrasts Marionette’s approach to wooing Adrien, and also has an interesting parallel to how Chat Noir handles his feelings towards Ladybug. Acting as a mirror towards that relationship. While Kagami is not flirtatious like chat noir, she is upfront about her feelings. She puts it out there and is understanding when Adrien isn't ready to respond, much like how chat noir is with ladybug. But the difference being that ladybug and Chat noir’s dynamic has a bit more complexity to it. Regardless, Kagami checks the boxes needed to be a true love rival.

Now the last and most crucial part about Kagami is the character at the core. Cause in the end, we know her and Adrien’s relationship wont be endgame, and interestingly she will be better off afterwards. Ikari Gozen does an excellent job filling in more information about Kagami’s character. In this we get to see that Kagami’s life doesn't revolve around being Adrien’s love interest, she is someone that has her own struggles and wants to find freedom in her own way, be friends with people, but she is awkward. Her development from this and Loveater shows how much she has grown on her own, how she has come to see Marinette as a friend, how she understands that there is more to life than just fencing. She wants to prove she is good enough, and wants to show she is worthy of friendship and love. Those are themes and traits that can be cultivated and grown. Kagami’s greatest appeal is that she can grow beyond her role as a Love rival, and that is why she succeeds.

Why She is Hated for it

Now despite all of these great qualities Kagami has demonstrated as well as how perfect her character is for such a role, the fandom is mixed about her, some even down right hating her. Interestingly enough, the reasons they dislike Kagami is not because of her character. Especially when you consider the rise in popularity of Marigami. Its because of 3 other factors outside of Kagami’s control. Over-saturation, Writing, and Fandom trends.

Over-saturation seems like an odd choice but it perfectly describes the situation. In season 1, we are introduced to two other female characters that were reoccurring characters AND were romantically interested in Adrien. Chloé bourgeois and Lila Rossi. Now both of them can be considered antagonists, and that is kind of the problem. Two reoccurring female characters already have a thing for Adrien, and both of them are jerks (that being the lightest term I can use). Now we know Adrien would never end up with a bad girl, but that impression starts to stick and make it seem like a pattern. That Adrien only attracts bad people (excluding Marinette). By season 2, when Kagami was introduced, it just seemed to the fans like, “Oh great, ANOTHER one”. Despite Kagami being a good character, and someone that actually cares about Adrien outside of the shallow aspects that Lila and Chloé were invested in, fans were ready to write her off and, with how the show was written, you couldn't really blame them at the time. 

The second is a bit more obvious, the shows writing. The largest offender being Frozer and Oni-chan. While Oni-chan was salted on by fans a bit excessively, I have no real defense for Frozer, Frozer was an awful episode and everyone involved should feel bad. Kagami suffers like many ML characters do from poor writing, now this doesn't destroy her character like many would like you to believe, but she gets portrayed in a more negative light when the intentions are not meant for it. Its a bit harder to explain, but just know poor writing and assume Zag interference was what caused issues.

The Last one is something that is a bit more controversial, Fandom trends. Now in season 2, fans really, REALLY, did not like Kagami. The first two reasons having a large impact on that, but what really made it hard for Kagami, was the fandom itself. Since she was introduced first, certain lovesquare shippers LOATHED her appearance, HOW DARE she jump in and disrupt the love square! There are more words that were used, most of which are very degrading towards women and I would not want to repeat. Kagami took the brunt of the fandom backlash, the one that ‘Ruined the Lovesquare’. And when season 3, or as I call it, the season of Salt, fans really hit her hard with hatred, the Adrigami fandom took a lot of salt from toxic stans, some of which didn't like adrigami because they hated Adrien and didn't want him to be happy. It is gross to think about and its tragic that she is hit hard by hatred simply for things outside of her control.

Why Luka Doesn't Work as a Love Rival

Luka is the alternate love interest of Marinette and was introduced in Captain Hardrock. He is Juleka’s older brother and is a guitarist.

His introduction is not terrible, but it is not as strong compared to other characters, but I do believe it sets the mood for what he is as a character. His character is the friend’s nice older brother musician, thats kind of it. It sounds like I am being mean but that sums up his character. He isn't really a foil to Adrien or Marinette in anyway, there is no shocking twists or clever parallels to be made, its just Luka. Simply put, Luka doesn't work as a Love rival.

Luka isn't a rival character. He isn't competing with Adrien, he doesn't clash with Adrien in anyway that would help him develop. Adrien and Luka get along fine, there is not a single bit of tension or conflict between them. This isn't a good thing when they are suppose to be competing for the same girl. I already hear what you are thinking, ‘But Adrien likes Ladybug.’ you're right, why isn't Luka interested in Ladybug then? Why is there no clash with chat noir? The point of a Love rival is to push another character towards something, to be a measuring stick. Luka doesn't do that for Adrien, and that is why the rival aspect fails for Luka.

The next course would be the love interest part. Surely Luka is someone that works well as an alternate love interest for Marinette? You are somewhat right, he does work better as a love interest for Marinette rather than a rival for Adrien. But that doesn't make him a good love interest for her. In my take on Love rivals, there needs to be three criteria met to be an effective love rival/love interest, an unequal development of both character, a differing connection that the two share, and a character underneath that can exist outside of the relationship. Luka fails to meet 2 of these criteria. The unequal development of both of them, Marinette has shown some development from her interactions with Luka but the reverse is not provable, we have yet to see Luka really change because of his relationship with Marinette, we don't know how much Marinette has helped/hindered Luka with his struggles, the best argument I could think of was that Marinette helped him be more bold in silencer, but really that sort of falls flat because he has shown bold actions outside of that. Captain hard rock said that he wasn't really good at expressing himself with words, but he shows pretty capable of doing so with people outside of Marinette, like his sister, or expressing anger to Bob Roth, so I don't really see how that works. The other criteria he fails to meet is having a character should the relationship end, Luka’s relevance is tied to him being the other guy for Marinette to choose, we as a viewer have no concrete reason as of yet to see him grow or change after the split. It doesn't help that Luka has even encouraged Marinette to go after Adrien on multiple occasions. People say thats because he is truly selfless and ‘Because he cares’ but really it just shows how little interest he has in trying to win her over, it almost comes off as insulting to Marinette. The only thing that Luka managed to pass was by having a different dynamic with Marinette than Adrien had with her. But that dynamic is shoulder to cry on. I guess that explains why salt fics really try to make Luka into Adrien.

Luka’s character in itself isn't awful, he isn't a bad person or anything of the sort. He is inoffensive and thats the problem. A love rival is suppose to be a point of tension, one that pushes, one that causes development, a force that at its core is meant to help the characters grow, and Luka just isn't the character to do that. He isn't a love rival, or a love interest. Luka is a wall, a wall put in between the two main leads in order to cause a divide without causing tension.

Why He is Loved despite it

Luka isn't a love rival, and yet despite it he is one of the more popular characters in the fandom. It was something so mind boggling to me, what did this character have that made him so well liked in the fandom? Why wasn't he as hated as Kagami was during her introduction? I found myself coming up with three reasons why this was the case. Luka was so loved because of Necessity, writing and Salt.

 Much Like Kagami suffered from Over-saturation, Luka had the Opposite problem. Marinette’s other love interests all ended up losing interest by the end of the episodes they were in. Nino, Nathaniel, Theo (though it was for ladybug). All of them just got paired off with someone else shortly after. Marinette didn't have another person outside of Adrien that was potentially going for her attention. This necessity allowed for Luka to slip in and fill the gap. The fandom saw him show up and were excited! With Kagami *ruining* the lovesquare, they needed someone for Marinette to help mend her should kagami ‘Win’, and Luka won by default. So Luka was the one the screeching fandom saw as there answer.

The next key that helped Luka was the writing of the show. The problem with the writing in the show is that often the writing will clash and hurt the strong characters of the show. Luka, as someone that does not have any strong defining features is flexible and easy to write for the writers. It makes it easy for him to be written in a way that wont infuriate people because of bad writing. He is able to coast by without having his character be in jeopardy. In a way, he has nothing to lose.

The last factor is of course salt. Now in fandoms, salt is used as a means of criticism or used to describe problems with characters. Luka is someone that people don't really have a problem with, which during the season of salt, made him perfect for all those fics where they needed someone to be on Marinette’s side because Adrien was ‘the devil’ or Lila was an extra mean jerk. Luka didn't have any problems that were agitated by salt, so he was the perfect replacement for Adrien when the writer wanted to hate on the blonde. Luka was the substitute, he was the easy fix that took little effort to include. He was a nice older brother that already liked Marinette, perfect fix for any situation. Its rare to see Luka written in a negative light without his character being warped so far that he is a completely different character.

Luka is loved not because of the things he is, but simply because of the things he is not. He is used more as a means to an end rather than as a character. In the writing, he is more of a wall, while in the fandom he is more of a stand-in. At the end of the day, I don't know what is more tragic.

Final Thoughts

Kagami and Luka are characters that were introduced in order to spice things up and add development for the main characters. I find that in some ways they do achieve that goal, but in other ways they fail. One of them embodies the spirit of a Love rival while the other embodies the love obstacle. Regardless of this analysis, your thoughts on Kagami and Luka are your own and you can love and appreciate them as you see fit.
