mr. fletcher didn't know what he was doing wrong. all he was trying to do was have some casual conversations with students who knew his only daughter, but ogden students seemed to be either extremely socially awkward or he had bad breath. of course, he could not see the death glares and throat-slitting gestures charlie was giving to her classmates behind his back as he tried to ask some basic questions. and as he went to try again with another young man, he couldn't see charlie behind his back mouthing 'walk away now, or you're dead' to link as he asked "and what are you studying?"

"i don't think so, you've lost all your appeal now. maybe after the 30-year reunion if you don't lose all your hair." she congratulated herself on a well-reasoned response; maybe her prefrontal cortex was developing after all. or she just didn't like to be made a fool of. "i don't know what you mean. i'm extremely committed to not committing to things. i've been doing it for years now," she informed him smarmily. she couldn't even commit to a hair color. "maybe people like us just need other things to commit to us. so we don't have a choice."

"but if i go ahead and do that, there go all our future chances at randomly stumbling into bed together. i like the saying never say never, you know?" it wasn't the wisest of decisions to start slightly flirting with charlie again — especially not with how frail things are between her and sassa. but it would be quite the move if he ever really wanted to piss her off, so he's got to keep it in his back pocket. other than that, charlie and link meeting anywhere in the middle together was sure to leave a crime scene behind.. metaphorically or literally. but he was drunk, a lot of his relationships in pieces, and it was harmless. "ha, very funny. that's quite rich coming from you, though, don't you think?" he teases with a grin.

there was a certain amount of affected disinterest she adopted around link - it was fun when both of them were playing their roles as written, when the more disdainful she was, the harder they fought back. but the grimace that flashed across beck's face was genuine this time. she hated being called by her last name. "i don't see anything worth stopping for." she didn't look his way, didn't take off her sunglasses, because then he might see the slight insecurity in her eyes. beck really didn't get the acting gene. "did you need something? i'm busy." she wasn't.

she had effortlessly walked right past him, as he was leaving the shop, whether she ignored him on purpose or not was unclear — either way, it was bothering link that she still refused to give him the attention he wanted. so naturally, he walks up beside her and sparks up a conversation.

"hoffman, it's the end of the road for almost all of us," he starts, rather than just saying a hello or how are you. "and yet you still walk past me and shatter my ego into several little pieces." he says with a small grin, glancing at her. "you're killing me here."
