March 18 - Sister Fawn - Full of Hell & Merzbow

Sister Fawn by FULL OF HELL & MERZBOW
Bandcamp / Youtube
A follow up to Full of Hell and Merzbow's previous collaboration, but this one feels much more heavily focused on the Merzbow side of things, whereas the other feels a lot of more focused on Full of Hell. Lot of really cool drones and textures on this one. Aphid especially.

Full of Hell / Merzbow Split
I can't believe there was a period of time where I knew I loved full of hell and I knew I loved Merzbow, but I didnt know this album existed. Honestly so sad. This is one of the fucking coolest records of all time. Merzbow does an amazing job at putting these spectacular waves of noise and Full of Hell's instrumentation on this record is some of the best they've ever done. This is literally the perfect combination powerviolence and noise.

recently put together a broad-spectrum album recommendation list for an oomfie, but it felt like it'd be fun to throw this on tumblr as a blunt force answer to everyone who's asked for album recommendations from me
no particular order, no particular quality threshold, no particular mood, no particular genre, we're shooting for variety here
if there's one uniting factor, it's probably "most of this would be considered 'extreme' music" but even then there's plenty of wildcards mixed in to keep you on your toes

When the PS2 Mod of the 2009 Higurashi Cry Ch. 8 Matsuribayashi pt. 95
I was going to title this as the PS2 Mod Part Final, but I didn’t want to mislead anyone, because there’s still a bit to go.
One of the odd things I noticed while reading the PS2 modded version of the 2009 translation (2010 translation technically, but that’s kind of a whatever) is the tendency for them to switch between using the photographed backgrounds and the newer anime style backgrounds. I wonder if it’s down to budgetary constraints or something else? I wouldn’t claim that the original backgrounds are a higher resolution. Given the positively tiny screen resolution of the 2009 version I don’t think there’s any appreciable difference that you can glean from just a glance. I’m really terrible at discerning resolution just by looking at it, but all I know is that if you play the visual novel as is without making it full screen the window is not a particularly large one. I don’t think it’s a 640x480, but it definitely is sub 720. If File Explorer and MS Paint is to be believed each screenshot is a 642x507 sized picture, so make of that what you will. The 2009 versions are both restricted in the size of visual novel, it wasn’t until the remake and the 07th-Mod that you could adjust the screen resolutions to be bigger than the size of a post it note. Which really makes you think about screen resolutions because this was on a PS2, so you could in theory have played this on a large television. I think I had some point I was trying to make about the backgrounds, instead I got distracted talking about game resolutions.
Something I’ve noticed, and you may have as well, is the fact they reuse this ceiling shot a lot for a bunch of rooms. I know it’s generic enough that really who the hell cares, but it just amuses me that this particular background, both in the PS2, and as the basis for the 07th-Mod gets used for multiple hospitals, police stations, and government buildings over the course of the series.
A somewhat peculiar change that only exists in the modded version of Higurashi is the change of Ohtaka’s name to Ootaka. Every other version he appears in; the original translation, the newer one (unmodded), the anime, even going as far back as Tsumihoroboshi and all of those versions there he’s called Ohtaka. It wasn’t a one-time slip either, this was a consistent translation thing in the modded version whenever Ootaka showed up there.
A uguisu is a Japanese bush warbler. The funny thing about the design of this “hotel room” is that this is the screenshot they use in Meakashi for Shion’s apartment. Meanwhile Karasu is apparently a word from the Turkic language that means “black water/river.” The wikipedia page specifically mentions rivers in the Balkans, Asia, a specific river in the Gunma prefecture in Japan, and a few in Turkey. Other references are a Japanese noise musician named Masami Akita (Merzbow), and a fictional prefecture in a game called The Sky Crawlers. I can only assume this is another bird reference, because I doubt Ryukishi07 has a deep undying love of a Turkish volleyball player.
As someone who’s worked retail sometimes the pretty young women with big boobs are the worst people to deal with.
Hibari is the Japanese name for the Eurasian skylark, and Shirasagi is apparently an egret. Isn’t learning fun?
What a peculiar choice of words there. “Final phase symptoms” I can understand why MangaGamer wanted to give the translation a bit of a sprucing up.
Do not be intimidated by the floating Hanyu. It’s a very definite “we didn’t think we had to finish the sprite” look.
In case you’re wondering the reason there’s the jump from the Ooishi Ohtaka confrontation to the capture of Tomitake to now is because I didn’t screenshot anything worthwhile from those sections. It all played out largely to how it did in the playthrough proper so I didn’t bother capturing the moments again. Which is funny to me because I had to go through those sections twice to capture the floating Hanyu due to accidentally overwriting a screenshot and not being as cautious with my saves as I was during my initial reading of Matsuribayashi. So I definitely could have got more screenshots, but clearly my mind was elsewhere, also don’t be surprised when the screenshots suddenly end seven screens from now.
Bold choice going with this as the background. A quadrisect monitor is when a security monitor is divided into four separate squares, and not when you have four monitors together lined up to make a wall of monitors basically. You can sort of see it in the monitors in the background, the screen divider.
I wonder if anyone at Ryukishi07’s old job ever wondered why he was taking random pictures of the front of the building and the parking lot? Or if they just shook their head at that kooky Ryukishi07 and went about their day?
The car chase goes about the same as it did in the modded game. The second screenshot is when the van that shot out Irie’s tires are following our protagonists to the Sonozaki home. Something about this dialogue bugged me, because I was fairly convinced that this was changed in the modded version. To my surprise it wasn’t really, it was all fairly consistent, just the more stilted way of speaking threw me off I suppose.
I do wonder if it’s a common thing in Japan to refer to the era you live in? I’m sure that people in China do refer to the year of the dragon, but I also imagine they put the year onto it. Year of the dragon 2024, you know? Because there’s probably been thousands of years of the dragon at this point. So I’m wondering if the Japanese refer to this being the fifth year of Reiwa (sixth year if you read this after May 2025)?
Rereading this screen I thought of a way you could make Higurashi infinitely worse. Start including eighties slang liberally throughout the dialogue. I’d read it, just to strengthen my ability to handle cringe-worthy dialogue.
Now I know what you’re thinking: 8bit, this is rather an abrupt ending to the sudden inclusion of the 2009 Mangagamer translation of beloved sound novel Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, alternately known as Higurashi When They Cry, that was modded to include the graphics of the Sony Playstation 2 home video game console. You’re right, it is somewhat abrupt, but I assure you that there really wasn’t anything particularly worth screenshotting from this point forward. The translation plays out the same as it had in the rest of the playthrough. Also during my reading of the PS2 modded version I was also reading the regular unmodified version of the 2009 translation. So I was, admittedly, starting to get somewhat burnt out on it.
The most jarring thing for me when it comes to reading the modded 2009 translation is the lack of some of the CG scenes that were added in the later editions of Higurashi. My theory for this is because of the fact that for several years the Playstation 2 version didn’t have a version of Matsuribayashi, so the mod makers just took sprites from the PS2 versions the other games and inserted them into the mod. Which that must have been annoying to do. Perhaps that’s the reason for the floating Hanyu from earlier on. That must have made the sudden announcement of the DS versions of Higurashi: Kizuna that much more of an irritation. Because suddenly now there is specific sprites for Matsuribayashi, as well as specially made CG scenes.
Which leads us to:
When The DS Higurashi Cry Ch. 8 Matsuribayashi

I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures, I tried to make them look alright, but there’s only so much taking a picture of a 3DS screen using my phone can do.

I didn’t take pictures of it, but when you boot up the game you need to tap the screen to start it. When you do so it leaves behind a bloody fingerprint oooooohhhhhhh spooooooooky. Oh hell I’ll go back and take a picture of it, and the fragments screen.

See there you go. Instead of the specialized graphics with the thumbnail letting you know which fragment is which it uses this list version. For a brief moment I did consider playing through the DS version as well, but the idea of playing the game entirely looking at it through my phone is a bit of effort I’m just not willing to put in to this. I’m not very interested in what the google translation might say. But circling back, as you can see with the Hanyuu sprites on the DS there are indeed multiple different sprites, perhaps owing to the newer crisper art the DS afforded compared to the PS2 version. Also, it only just now occurred to me that throughout the entire final fight between the gaming club and Takano and the Mountain Hounds Takano wasn’t wearing her military outfit. She was rather conspicuously off-screen during the encounter.

I love the DS and 3DS. It tries so very hard to have one continuous image going across the screens, but the unfortunate reality of the device itself makes that a literal impossibility.
The DS version does include the special scenes of a tormented young Miyoko Tanashi and the final group shot of the gaming club before the credits.

Love giving myself extra work when I decided I didn’t need to include these screens originally. But here they are anyway. Because I love you so much.
Also I had google translate these screenshots, and man that is some gibberish.
In case you're wondering, the red square covering Rena's face is a little panning effect for the picture. There wasn't a way to actually remove it from the picture itself, the face buttons on the DS don't actually do anything during the gameplay itself. The only functional button on the D-pad just takes you back out a menu depending on which screen it's on. It was incredibly lucky for me that the copies I got included these save files from after completing the games. Had they not been there this little digression wouldn't exist, and I think it was kind of interesting. Don't worry, there won't be a sudden inclusion in the other 2009 parts where I suddenly talk about playing the actual PS3 ports of Matsuribayashi. My PS3's disc drive doesn't work, and the discs won't arrive in time anyway.

Catafalque – Dybbuk (2023)

James looks at Dybbuk, the new album from UK experimental drone doom/noise act Catafalque, released October 13 on Aural Music.
I believe that I said “if hell had a sound, Catafalque have captured a portion of it in their music” in my review of the band’s 2020 album We Will Always Suffer, and if I didn’t, then I’m saying it now. The UK act once again bring us an offering of soul crushing auditory oppression on their latest album. Sound wise the album is a blend of drone doom, harsh noise, black metal and industrial, with an extremely heavy focus on atmosphere and distortion. Fans of Khanate, The Body, Merzbow and Godflesh will find plenty to love, as the band explore the four stages of possession through the lens of a victim of the malevolent spirit attached to the cursed Dybbuk box.
Read James' full review and listen to and order the album at the link below:

Music Reviews - 11/18/2024
The Love Market - Filmmaker (2019)
The electro scene has often been shoved to the side in the face of newer, shinier genres, but that doesn't mean that the ideas have died. For one, the influences of electro are vast. For two, and for this review, electro is still alive as a genre, thanks to musicians like Filmmaker.
Originating from Colombia, Filmmaker's gothic and occult-inspired works are something which I discovered thanks to the sheer power of YouTube recommendations (this may become a theme). As his theming would imply, he is a cult artist making it through the electronic underground and releasing tens of projects over the years.
The Love Market takes influences from the ominous sound of old school electro, and infuses it with a kick of vintage scares with antiquated synths and percussion that has that "pow" quality you could only find in the actual 1980's. The low-fidelity adds to atmosphere, making each beat subsume your mind with the vicious bass.
Tracks like "Lust Riders" and "Mirror Slave" dive into a more club-oriented sound, fusing electro with more janky breakbeats, creating an inviting energy to rave to in the middle of the night. As the album continues into its second half, however, the album takes a turn to a slower, more sleazy sound. "Liquor Pheromones" and "Monster Models" are examples, combining the bassy sound with a slower tempo. It's almost as if the hypothetical drugs you took at this rave just started to set in (though feel free to correct me, I'm straight edge).
This change is definitely something that can vary in reception based on the person listening. As I outlined, if you see as the point in the rave where everything switches up to be more brooding or trippy, that's completely valid and I can see the vision. However, it does feel very anti-climactic at times, especially with the last track, "Queen ov Material Happiness", resorting to a milquetoast synthpop pastiche.
Overall Verdict: 3.5/5 The first half is very strong, and the second half (apart from the last track) is also very strong. However, as a project, the way it is composed and arranged makes no sense to me. In fact, it could have been saved by being put in reverse track order.
Merzbeat - Merzbow (2002)
I feel that everyone's first exposure to noise music is Merzbow. His work, though inspired by more conventional genres, stands as some of the most provocative and harsh in the mainstream "non-mainstream" music sphere. His techniques influenced and, in part, could be seen as an originator of noise music as a whole.
One of the characteristics of harsh noise would be its amorphous shape. Often the only thing you can hear is a large, insurmountable wall of fuzz bombard and squeeze your ears, the growls of the synths washing out your brain. As someone who listened to Pulse Demon in full to calm down after a mental meltdown, I can attest, this shit works somehow, so I was pretty excited to see what Merzbow would do with an added beat.
Despite my relative optimism, I found myself disappointed in what I got in this album. Of course, as I would hope with noise music, it did become easy to set to the background and lock in to whichever schoolwork-based task I would have to finish, yet, I didn't really enjoy it or reach a flow state.
For some reason, adding a beat to harsh noise, at least in the way Merzbow does during this record, makes the repetition and the monotony of the noise far more apparent than it should be. And especially when one of these tracks is over ten minutes, combined with the fact that by necessity every sound is distorted to hell and back, it becomes disorienting and dizzying, and rather grating too.
It feels that the rhythm is not a component of the noise, but rather an opponent, leading to a nuclear war localized entirely within my headphones. In some cases it would work, but it felt so cataclysmic that it hurt to listen to for too long.
The one thing I will say to others.. please stop saying this record is accessible. I know everyone has to start with Merzbow, and the lack of beats is intimidating.. but I argue this is a harsher experience than the straight noise!
Overall Verdict: 1.5/5 I appreciate the experimentation to move past what could be seen as a boring formula, but the way it came out was really bad. The only reason besides dashed hopes that this is not a 1/5 is because it did actually serve as ambience.
When - Vincent Gallo (2001)
Vincent Gallo is an enigma of a man. He is mainstream enough to be mentioned as a director's favorite director, but obscure enough where it's difficult to gage how he is. From what I can find he is most known for his work in film, as well as various worrying (understatement) allegations regarding sexual misconduct. This has led to a lot of reviews I've seen of this album revolving around "separation of artist and music", which, as a principle is fine.
What doesn't feel right to me as a listener, however, is the praise the record often gets. It's not that Gallo is bad at music either. Beyond his own works, Gallo had a career performing with proto-punk bands and even had links to artists like Basquiat through these ventures. Indeed, his experience and prowess of production is visible in more ambient tracks like "Was" and "I Wrote This Song For The Girl Paris Hilton".
The album begins to fall apart for me once songs like "Honey Bunny' and "Apple Girl" begin to come into the fray. I can understand the appeal of songs like these whether they be parodical (as Pitchfork claimed at the time) or naked, as they seem to me. Gallo's high falsetto alongside the minimalist backing seems to be trying to creating something intimate, yet all it does is make me reflexively uncomfortably. The lyrics don't help, with their cloying, desperate quality. And that's without the context I mentioned in the first paragraph staining this discomfort in this sheen of gross.
There are a lot of musicians who I listen to semi-regularly who are definitely immoral, however, at the very least the projects are not only more refined and also don't make me feel repulsed through acoustics alone. And hell, music that is uncomfortable can be great too, but this felt like the discomfort you get when that one guy in the office with bad vibes comes up to you. It's not a provocative repulsion, as there are no other words to state this, it's almost a natural repulsion.
Vincent Gallo might be a mystery, but I won't be the one to solve him.
Overall Verdict: 1/5 Though there is potential at the beginning, an album which makes me feel "the ick" this severely is demoted instantly.

please recommend me some creaming scrying throwing up music I've been listening only to chill lofi ghibli beats to study to for the past two months
(I am putting a blanket TW on almost everything I rec here for potentially Disturbing Themes and Imagery)
I'll just give you a few bands I can think of off the top of my head and then link some of my playlists if those aren't enough.
If you want unusual vocals or the vocalist literally screaming/crying/various sounds you can check out The Body, Pharmakon (maggots tw), Plebeian Grandstand, Anaal Nathrakh, Lingua Ignota, Author & Punisher, some Homeskin, Diamanda Galas, Ashenspire & Chat Pile (these two are holding hands. in my head), Cruelty, Pupil Slicer, Uboa, Full of Hell x Merzbow
If you like the above and want more of that unsettling nonsense I've got a playlist with a bunch of power electronics/drone/noise.
Other stuff: So Hideous, Fawn Limbs, some Undergang, one of my favorite Autopsy songs where the guy sounds like he's having a godawful nauseating time, Leprous - Contaminate Me for the beginning
Playlists of potential interest:
The one where I gather every death metal song with the word 'flesh' in its title in one place
The general black metal playlist, the music genre that most often makes me scream and cry in, like, spirit
#oobh I've got plany of recs#I assume when ppl describe music like this they're referring to how it makes them feel rather than how it sounds#but these r focused on the way it sounds#'cause we all feel differently. a lot of the music that makes me wanna fullbody deglove myself usually doesn't sound violent at all#music recs

Don't do drugs, a fic
tw: drug use, alcohol mentioned.
(this can be pre-car wreck or post I don't care how you interpret it, but simon has a smart phone and they use today's lingo. Happy late 4/20)
It was gently raining outside, not enough to feel a noticeable temperature drop, or to hear it, but just enough to where you didn't want to be out walking home in the rain either, but it didn't matter to them, afterall, they're just two boys holding up in David's room sharing a music and a blunt.
"Is this harsh noise?" Simon questioned. "It sucks."
David reached over "It's. Merzbow." and snatched the blunt out from between Simon's fingers.
"It. Sucks." Simon reinstated as he furiously scrolled through his likes on Spotify to play ANYTHING else. He settled on Brackish by Kitty. He slumped from sitting up against the wall to laying down on the floor, still scrolling for something else to play that David would like.
"Maybe it's an acquired taste," David stated. "Much like liking coffee with creamer.
"You're insane," Simon scoffed, trying to not let a smile creep up on his face.
"And you're the one who is laying on the floor, at least lay on my bed. I promise it's clean," David assured.
Simon groaned, and as he crawled onto David's bed it seemed like every bone in his body had something to say about that, making David look at him with worry.
"You good?" David asked.
"Mmm," Simon stretched his arms behind himself, letting his chest bones pop loudly.
David grabbed a water bottle nearby and crinkled it. "That's what you sound like."
Simon mocked his tone of voice while sticking his tongue out and blowing a raspberry at the end. "Whatever."
"It's a sign of stress and tension in your body, my dude." David took a drag
Simon waved his hand at David, shooing him away in a dismissive gesture. "My whole life is a stress and tension in my body, I'm use to it."
David passed the wacky tobaccie back to Simon before mumbling something about how he's probably gonna need something stronger then.
Simon didn't look up, assuming it was his favorite Russian Vodka or something, and finished up making a playlist of songs he wanted David to listen to before turning off his phones screen and seeing David handing him a chunk of... beans? Simon raised his eyebrows before holding out his hand, looking back and forth between these beans and him.
"What, never had them before?" David asked before deciding to sit next to Simon on his bed.
"What are these, truffles of some kind?" Before getting an answer Simon ate the small handful he received and noticed the texture was off. Maybe they are beans?"
"They're Shrooms, dude." David himself ate a handful of these beans.
Simon stopped chewing and with his mouth full asked "On god?" He takes one out of his mouth to examine it further.
"Man that's gross, don't take food out of your mouth," David goes to try to motion Simon to put it back into his mouth before Simon shoved the bean of a mushroom into David's lips, which caused David to freeze in his tracks and furrow his eyebrows at Simon. He decided it didn't matter, they've swapped spit before, so why make a fuss, and continued eating it, shrugging it off.
They both finish chewing and swallowing when Simon asked how long does it take to kick in.
"It varies," David stated with fluctuation in his voice. "Can take up to an hour? 30 minutes?"
Simon checks his playlist. Seems like these two will be listening to David's music by the time they kick in. So he turns on David's Playstation and put on Netflix to watch Hell Fest again to kill some time. The TV was at the end of David's bed, so Simon rested on David's arm which was wrapped around him, holding him into place. just as soon as Hell Fest started to get good, Simon realized just how soft his new hoodie was, and kept squirming so his skin would keep touching it.
David rose an eyebrow down on him. "You okay, my man?"
Simon practically blurted out "Feel how soft my hoodie is."
David grinned widely, feeling it. "Wow, it sure is soft! Do you want your skin to be soft too?"
And before you know it, these two had sugar scrubbed their hands, did a whole face mask with moisturizer and everything, and they couldn't stop feeling how soft each other were, all the while sharing a second blunt.
David Also suggested that they have snacks and drinks, and made a quick trip to the nearby grocery market to pick out their favorite snacks. As soon as they got back to David's bedroom they nearly exploded tearing into the food of their choice and exclaiming just how good everything tasted and sharing food with one another until all the snacks they bought were gone.
They both laid vertically on David's bed, and had forgotten about the movie and the music and were just living in this moment of pure bliss.
The room had a line of fog floating just above their heads and David reached up to break it. Simon was too enamored by the grey light that was peeking through the curtains of David's window.
"We should do this every day," Simon said, breaking the silence. "I've never felt so at peace with myself and just... everything."
David rolled onto his side and squeezed Simon's shoulders. "You do feel pretty relaxed to me. I'll provide as much as you need."
Simon broke his stare from the light into David's eyes and he felt like he was going to float away. "Yeah?" He smiled. "You mean that?"
"I'll even stay sober if you ever need a time to yourself to let go of everything, I promise I'll always be here for you no matter what."
Simon smiled so wide, and with tears in his eyes he started to cry. "You mean that?"
David grabbed Simon by the back of his hoodie and pulled him close into an embrace and kissed the top of his head. "Always."
