When the FUNK
Met PUNK
The mind boggles at what the crowd would have been like, but would be a good reason to time travel.

Machines Of Loving Grace - Machines Of Loving Grace [1991, Mammoth Records]
Tumblr media
As the story goes, Machines Of Loving Grace's first album happened because they sent a copy of their demo tape in to Mammoth Records, who got excited and put the tape out as a full album (details are unclear on how much additional production went into it between the two steps).  As such, there's some rough edges here that don't show up on their two other albums; the post-'60s paranoia drippings are more explicit, there's a couple of 'throw-away' tracks (though they add a fair helping of character), and the drums sound a little thin.
Apart from that, it's a very strong album, showing off Machines Of Loving Grace's unique blend of electronics, rock, funk, electro, beat poetry, and industrial (a very early-'90s blend, but one that they make seem organic) and their double-plus allusions and entendres.  Thick tangles of genre-blurring experimentation mesh with solidly-grounded funky bass-lines and percussion for something that deserves more listeners.
