Lula and Boric call for regional unity to face Trump’s tariffs

The presidents of the two Latin American countries signed agreements

Brazil’s and Chile’s presidents, respectively Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gabriel Boric, have criticized the extra tariffs US President Donald Trump imposed on most countries in the world. The Latin American leaders also defended greater integration as a way of shielding the region’s economies. The statements were made on Tuesday (22) during the Chilean president’s visit to Brasilia, Brazil’s capital.

“I think that we, the presidents of South American countries, should understand that we are very weak if we are isolated,” said Lula, arguing that most governments in the region have privileged only part of their populations. “After building up the United States wealth, now comes a president who treats Latin Americans like enemies,” he criticized.

Lula also criticized US pressure to isolate China, Brazil’s biggest trading partner.

“I don’t want to choose between the US or China. I want to have relations with the United States and China. I don’t want to have a preference between one or the other. Brazilian businessmen are the ones free to have preferences about partners. I want to do business with everyone. I want to sell and buy, build partnerships,” he said.

Chileans are protesting against the neoliberal government of Gabriel Boric as power cuts hit large areas of the capital.

Following a recent storm, much of Santiago was left without basic services. Working class districts on the outskirts of the city have still not had their connection restored. For eleven days now, residents have been abandoned and unable to store food or heat water.

While working class Chileans go without electricity, President Boric has been focused on condemning Venezuela and urging other governments in the region to do the same.

Gabriel Boric was elected as the candidate of a leftist coalition, but has since abandoned the struggle to draft a new constitution, failed to make any significant reforms to the neoliberal model he inherited, and spearheaded attempts to isolate Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua within the region.

Brazil, Chile sign 19 bilateral acts

On Monday (Aug. 5), Brazil and Chile signed 19 agreements and other bilateral acts in areas including tourism, science and technology, defense, agriculture, human rights, trade, and investment relations. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is on an official visit to Chile and was welcomed by the country's president, Gabriel Boric, at La Moneda palace in Santiago.

The two countries have more than 90 bilateral agreements in force and a balanced but still little diversified trade. The agreements signed seek to achieve this diversification.

In his speech, Lula highlighted the collaborations agreed for real integration between the countries, especially in the areas of climate change and tourism. "South American integration is a reality that makes a difference to people's lives, as demonstrated by the roaming exemption agreement we signed last year and the reciprocal driver's license recognition agreement we signed today," Lula stated.

"Additionally, the challenges posed by natural disasters and organized crime cut across countries. The fires in Chile in 2023 and this year's floods in southern Brazil call climate denialism into question and reinforce the need for cooperation. The Chilean proposal to establish a regional disaster response mechanism has our backing and support," added the Brazilian president.
