Story time. I once almost got into a fist fight with a dude over that Gamestop trade-in value. He was verbally berating an associate who had been on register for, like, three days, over getting pennies on the dollar for his stolen games. Cats used to steal the new releases from video stores and cash them out. We know because they didn't take the "property of" stickers off. M y store was in the middle of the ghetto, sandwiched between a Hollywood Video and a Blockbuster so out used game shelves were stocked with A LOT of those games. We informed Corporate of the rather illegal trade but they said to take them in, cash out the thieves, and ship the games to the refurbish center so they could take off the stickers for resale. Basically these motherf*ckers were knowingly receiving stolen property and making a mint off it. I didn’t really give a sh*t, i was more concerned that all these trades wee for cash and, as mentioned above, cats would get real hot when they found out that their contraband only netted them enough loot for a pack of gum. We took in these games for a while and then sh*t changed.

When I became a manager, I put the kibosh on that nonsense because f*ck Gamestop. I was, for sure, not comfortable signing in sh*t that i know was stolen, especially for a company that would fire people strictly because off seniority. Cats lost their jobs so the company could pay younger tenured employees, less, for the same work. Shifty sh*t like that let me know exactly where i stood as a cat in those managerial cross-hairs. If cops asked questions about these hot games, i was, for sure, taking the heat as the manager of my store so, nah. F*ck your trade, bro. Anyway, dude is going in on this chick and she's straight panicking. Usually, her husband would be around as I would schedule them together but he was off doing something that day. She comes into the back to get me, damn near in tears, so I drop my social facade and get real aggro before even coming out the break room. Youthful Smokey hungered for violence. I told the dude to f*ck off with his contraband. He took offense and asked me to step outside.

I did and at the same time, two of the homies pulled up. My friends usually came through and hing out for a few hours on the weekend because i would load up the new games in the demo machines. Today, they just happened to arrive in time to see me going in on some random in front of the neighboring Starbucks. Now, if this two man backup wasn’t enough, a family friend worked in said Starbucks and she peeped the scene from behind the counter. Being absolutely gorgeous and the apple of her male co-workers’ eyes, two more dudes came out to stand with me during the fracas, as a favor to the homegirl. Now, this asshole who decided to pick on my five foot tall associate, was getting bared down upon by my six foot tall, two hundred and fifty pound, three percent body fat frame, flanked by two cats just as big, and two other cats who pulled some things out the trunk. Mans got REAL apologetic about his transgression, profusely apologizing to my associate before disappearing in the aether never to be seen again. I thanked the Starbucks cats with a bunch of free credit, gave my homegirl a GBA Advance, the homies each got a Gamecube, and my associate got to take a half day. All of this because Gamestop made receiving stolen property a corporate mandate.

VGO: Thank you for writing in James! Please take my answer with a large grain of sea salt, as I am not well-versed in World of Warcraft or MMOs in general.

Blizzard telegraphed this move back in April 2016 when they shut down the largest private server, Nostalrius, which itself was a fan operated instance of vanilla WoW. Blizzard acted completely in its rights to stop that fan project (which violates their copyright) and start their own in-house Classic or “vanilla” WoW servers makes sense. Clearly there is a market of players who are nostalgic for the game in its much simpler form. As someone partially addicted to Hearthstone, I would love a third “classic” or “vanilla” ladder to check out that would limit players to cards as they existed at launch. I imagine that less sophisticated WoW fans may feel the same way. I trust Blizzard to make experiencing WoW: Classic extremely simple. Having not played more than 6 hours of the game in my life, I am not sure that I could find or access Nostalrius. So this sounds like a win for accessibility at the very least.

My train of thought next moves onto the track of game archival and history. I am only cursorily aware of efforts to keep other deactivated online games up-and-running on private servers. VGO: I have indeed played a small amount of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. The game does a great job of replicating the surface-level appeal of the series. The music, character design, and dialogue all drip with charm. I got serious flashbacks to my time with the GameCube and DS iterations of the game from the title screen alone. I cracked a huge smile when K.K. Slider greeted me at the start of the game.

Nostalgia and aesthetics aside, I have a fundamental problem with the game’s premise, which has held me back from truly enjoying it. The furniture sets all include couches, dressers, chairs, etc. and while I think the design of each set is visually interesting, it feels extremely strange and stupid to set all of this real furniture outside at a campsite. The items you can craft in this game belong inside a cute house. Period.

Dumb gripes aside, I think the nightmarish memes the game has created in its first week of full release point towards the creativity (and unsettling mindset) of its audience. I hope the game grows over time. The game feels incredibly casual, and I could see myself checking in on it from time to time.

The worst sign for my future with the game is that I already find my interest in logging in on a daily basis waning. The core “gameplay” loop centers around a series of checklists, timers, and meters. None of the mechanics show depth enough to interest me in fishing or bug catching for the challenge, as there is absolutely none.

Overall I would give the game a hesitant recommendation, just to experience the quick spark of joy that comes from exploring a new Animal Crossing game. Sadly, that spark failed to grow into an inviting campfire worth gathering around.
