Prompt #6: Onerous

Gaudet was forced to admit to himself that he'd considerably romanticized the life of a pugilist. His days were monotonous, an endless series of tasks so similar as to be indistinguishable from each other, stretching on and on before him.

Pulling a golden beef pie from the oven, he wiped sweat and grease from his face. Since it was his day off and his friends were out performing more onerous work, he was doing the housework. Not exactly relaxing, but it beat being covered in Amal'jaa guts for the tenth day in a row.

He merrily sang a song of the Starlight season as he tucked a second pie, pungent with aroma of various fruits, sweet spices and candied peel behind the other. He began to lay out plates and cutlery, crocks of pickles and preserves, various nuts and cheeses.

"I believe I have never seen a finer holiday feast, Petite Filet!" He patted the housecat that had been in residence there long before any of them. The cat purred and rubbed against him in an extravagant display of affection.

"I'm back!" came Turyn's voice as the door opened. Petite Filet hissed and darted from the room in outrage. Gaudet discreetly concealed his amusement, the cat's animosity toward his friend was a bit of a sore point.

"Our patrol went more quickly than expected, I'm going to have a quick bath before dinner," Turyn strode from the room, unbuckling his belt.

Ceci arrived soon after, cursing the blast of wind-driven sand she struggled against on her way.

When Turyn finished bathing, they sat and ate jovially together, chatting and singing, dining and drinking mulled wine late into the winter night.

Things I haven't seen mentioned about Doctor Who's new episodes that I feel are really important:

Time-stopped snowflakes in Boom, just like in Twice Upon A Time. My literal first thought when I saw them was "Testament?"

Susan Twist in Church on Ruby Road asking Ruby's band to play Gaudete, a Scandinavian carol according to Wikipedia. (Dårlig Ulv Stranden, anyone?)

What is the woman signing? (I just found a post about this though)

The Julbocken (Yule Goat) is enjoying his job of guarding the Advent candles much better, now that I bought him a straw mat to recline upon.

Mateo would be lying if he said he wasn't nervous about this. He'd booked an appointment with Dr. Gaudet on Finn's suggestion. It wasn't like he'd done it right away, of course, he'd ruminated for a while and tossed it over in his mind but had finally committed to it. It was probably time. There was no doubt a lot to work through and the thunderbird didn't expect that any of it would be easy. He still felt so guilty and the thought of his powers still terrified and made him feel panicky...but hopefully, after enough sessions, he could work through that. It had been decades since he'd last been to therapy and he'd quite after a short amount of time because he just hadn't been able to face it, to do that kind of work and...well, forgive himself, largely. Maybe he still wasn't ready but at least he was further away from it all and though maybe he could give it another try.

Locking the doors of the library behind him, he tried to breathe deeply and evenly. They likely wouldn't get into much in a first session, right? They'd just get to know each other and that kind of thing. Nothing to be nervous about there. It would be like chatting with a coworker since, in spite of their very different actually jobs, he and Noel were both staff here even if they hadn't actually met yet. Either way, once he got through this first session maybe it would all seem less overwhelming and he could stop anxiously spiraling about it and overthinking it.

Finally outside the door, he took another deep breath and knocked politely. "Dr. Gaudet? It's Mateo Rivera." He glanced at his watch. "I'm a few minutes early for my appointment but I thought I'd let you know I was here." Maybe it was vaguely awkward to talk through the door but he wasn't about to barge in, especially if it was possible that the doctor was with another patient.

I recently watched a TikTok where Joe Gaudet (the VA for Funtime Foxy, Rockstar Foxy, and Mr. Hippo) performed his own take on what Glamrock Mr. Hippo would be like. He ended up performing "Man in The Mirror" by Michael Jackson in Mr. Hippo's voice... and it sounded FREAKIN' COOL.

I don't know how Mr. Gaudet manages to make Mr. Hippo such a charming and even surprising character, but he's very good at it. A very talented voice actor, to be sure.

Prompt #5: Cutting Corners

The wagon driver reined the horses in sharply as they finally approached one of the few camps spaced out across this massive desert. Gaudet jumped to the ground and stretched his legs wearily, exhausted from weeks of travel in the dry Thanalan heat. It was vastly different from the climate to which he was accustomed, being so easily robbed of his physical and mental abilities left him feeling weak and pathetic.

He drank sparingly from his water canteen, doing his best to keep in the shade as he strolled slowly down a single path with about a dozen carts, tents and other shelters clustered around it. He was delighted to spot some wild shroud iris seeds and eagerly parted with the absurd amount of gil being charged for them.

“Here I thought you was cutting corners, making sure you have enough to live off once we reach Ul’dah,” Turyn tut-tutted, shaking his head ruefully at Gaudet’s extravagance.

“We’ll be fine,” Gaudet shrugged, “I can eat a bit less for a week or two, it’ll balance out by the time we make it there.”

“As if you could control your appetite,” Turyn snorted derisively. He had a point, Gaudet was accustomed to sharing his sister’s skilled cooking only with her and though they were not wealthy they’d always had plenty to eat.

“I’ll eat nothing but beans and bread, then,” Gaudet declared in tones of virtuous martyrdom. “You and Ceci can share out all the meat and vegetables between you.”

“Don’t be an ass,” Ceci, walking up to them, waved Gaudet into silence. “It wasn’t that much coin, Turyn is just being a miser and a bully. As, of course, is perennially tradition.” She glared at Turyn, “You can plant them when we find a place in Ul’dah, they’ll be a pleasant reminder of home for all of us.”

“They’re Mignon’s favorite flower,” Gaudet smiled. “I can have a perfume made from their essence for her, she’d love that.”

A chocobo had slipped it’s tether and was causing some havoc in the camp, scattering various merchandise in it’s scramble to flee before being recaptured. Without a word to each other, the three returned to their hired wagon and were glad to find the driver there, ready to depart.
