42. braiding each other's hair

As soon as the door cracks open, Gem scrambles away from it until she’s a reasonable distance away. Whenever False goes up to the surface, Gem ends up waiting by the bunker door, even though she knows it’s silly. Won’t make her come back any faster. And False hasn’t seemed to catch on, at least not yet.

So when Gem hears the heavy sounds of False breaking back in, she rushes back until she’s sitting on her bed, holding a book that she’s already read three times. Note to self: stock up on better reading material next time, in case of another apocalypse.

“Back,” False calls, voice muffled for some reason. “No luck.”

“Bummer,” Gem says, and means it. Any surface runs, nominally, are looking for supplies. They’ve never discussed it, but they both know they’re really looking for other survivors.

There are a couple of long minutes where False shucks off all her gear, shaking off moon dust and exhaustion, and then she wanders into the bedroom. Her eyes are a little distant, the way they always are.

(Gem thinks, sometimes — it was hard being the new kid on the block, but everything she lost is nothing, nothing compared to False, and — and all the missing friends, and—)

“Come here,” she says, and False follows the instructions, sitting on the bed and looking a little blank. “Turn around.”

False turns so that her back is to Gem, and immediately Gem reaches up to comb her fingers through False’s hair. False stays stiff, but she doesn’t push Gem away, so Gem keeps going, separating the strands between her fingers. There’s no relaxation, no sigh of relief, but Gem just keeps winding the hair through her fingers.

It’s been a while since Gem braided someone else’s hair, and False’s is much thinner and finer than her own. Gem isn’t deterred, though; she keeps going and going until False’s hair is peppered with tiny braids, hanging heavy against her head.

Gem’s beginning to twine three braids together into a mega-braid when False shifts, and then begins to lean back. It’s one smooth, slow motion, and it ends with her head in Gem’s lap. When her eyes close it is not relaxing, but instead a deliberate, conscious choice.

Gem doesn’t smile, because she’s not exactly happy or relieved. But she keeps her hands busy, braiding through False’s hair. She’ll go until she can’t anymore, and then she might start over. Just for fun.
