Week 8 - SDL - "The Book Of Veles"

The Book Of Veles - Jonas Bendinksen

The articles referenced through this week's SDL explain how the respected magnum photos journalist, Jonas Bendinksen created a book of his journey to capture the town of Veles through photography. During his process of creating the photobook “The Book of Veles,” he combined his images of landscapes, streets, and buildings with fake characters, humans, and animals which he learned to create through watching tutorials and downloading gaming software to add a different dimension and perspective to the images. Jonas managed to fool many people into thinking his images were truthful in the way he portrayed the town of Veles to the world.

Through the 2 articles and interview linked between Jonas and an interviewer, we see her interrogate Jonas as to why he wanted to fool everyone into believing that his images were real, accusing him of using it as a "prank". The other articles that were referenced on the Week 8 Canvas page explain that Jonah's purpose in creating his images was to challenge himself against this new technology that is available to everyone through simple gaming software and that anyone can do what he is doing just by watching some tutorials some putting the time in. In the article 'Fake news: how Jonas Bendiksen hoodwinked the photographic community with The Book of Veles' written by Jessica Miller, it states "He didn’t write a word of it, instead using GPT-2, a free trainable system for creating text." referencing the 5,000-word introductory text of his book, "The Book Of Veles".

Reading this made me feel a slight lack of artistic integrity as it is more meaningful for an artist to express their work through their own words, opinions, and ideas rather than having a robot programmed to make up sentences based on prompts provided. Although I can appreciate his adaptation to image-making with the ever-evolving world of technology and AI through the book and after it was released he wanted someone to question the authenticity of the images, so much so that he created fake social media pages and brought online bot's to criticize his work as stated in the article 'A photographer and artist walk into a fake news factory' published by Codastory.com, written by Katie Patin. In an interview with Magnum Photos on September 17th, he revealed the truth behind everything. I believe that the words of the artist and the story they are trying to tell need to be written and composed by the artist themselves and not text-generating software.

Classwork: 4 Tasks

Summarise and respond to the feedback from your group and lecturer on your Assignment 2 project work in progress (from in class critique)

Due to circumstances, I could not attend my week 8 class and gain feedback from my peers/lecturer. I will give myself feedback to be able to complete this task XD:

"This is a great start, but I am unsure what 'story' you are planning to use your beach photos for? Perhaps you need to actually start doing some post-production so you have a clear vision of where you need to go next. You also seem like you don't have enough photos for your entire project and am interested to see what else you have in store for your next photoshoot."

In response, I was also unsure what 'story' I would be using for my beach pictures when I was taking them, and hoped that something would come to me later: which it has. I will be adding a beach chair/holiday setting to my sand dune pictures and maybe using some rock formations to create a dystopian world for another composite image. Yes, I will be starting some post-production once I have to time! I still need to photograph my mother and myself and get some more photos for my 'stories'.

Visit the museum for photographs of their war memorial to create a 'war story' scene for one of my composite images

Visit a laundromat to take a self-portrait (might change this to a photograph of someone my age because this could be awkward to do by myself) - yes I have changed my scene from my breakroom to a laundromat because I no longer have a job and took too long to take these photos.

Start some post-production on the photographs that I already have/will be getting to figure out what last photos I may need.

I used ChatGPT to create these images

My response: It was pretty easy to get the basic image that I was prompting, but I tried a 3rd prompt asking for a more 2d image and it replied: 'I am unable to create any more images at this time' which I thought was odd since I prompt wasn't overly complicated. I also noticed that I asked for a 'grey-brown' dog and it gave me either/or instead of the perfect blend that I was after. I also never prompted for a white striped face on the first image, making me believe that the AI has a specific look in mind for animals when prompted. I think if I hadn't specified the white toes, there would be no white toes.

I am currently working through my week 8 content and don't think I'm necessarily missing anything other than a photoshoot that I will be doing this weekend.

SDL - Case Study - Book of Veles

Comments: Basically, this article discussed how the author of 'The Book of Veles' spent years creating a book made by AI with completely fake images and how the world bought it as a social experiment of how weak our processing of fake images actually is. To be honest, I think even doing this is helping to advance the AI technology that Bendiksen is trying so hard to highlight the negatives of. An interesting premise but kind of unethical, especially considering how long he let the public believe that it was real - even submitting it for awards (potentially taking awards away from deserving artists) to highlight how misleading this practise is? Seems hypocritical: "it's okay for me to do it, I'm experimenting - but you guys? Absolutely not."

Comments: just another article describing Jonas Bendiksen's book: "The Book of Veles" and how he fooled the photography world by mixing real photos with AI-generated people and fake news. He built a whole story around Veles, a town in North Macedonia that already had a reputation for producing fake news. It was supposed to show how vulnerable even experts are to being misled, while also being a giant trick as well.

Comments: Bendinksen said that AI-generated images scared him and how easy it was and that he felt like he shouldn't have been doing it. He also called it 'dangerous but seductive'. He thought about generating the entire world, but thought that would just take too much time so picked a city that he was curious about: Veles. He wanted a city with the vibes that they were caught in another area with not much to do. Bendiksen said he did this project as a 'vaccine' of sorts towards AI. He also said that people have always been able to create fake news, but has now highlighted how AI has sped up the fake news sector because now people don't actually need to do work to create fake news. My opinion on all of this is still as I stated above: he didn't actually need to participate to show the effects of it, he could have done a research-based project and showed the truth instead of tricking the world and calling himself a saviour.

Week 2 SDL - Stock Libraries

Truestock is an online stock library for purchasing images and video which could be used for photo manipulation.

The images are 100% authentically (not AI generated) and ethically sourced from photographers in New Zealand.

There is also tailoredcontent where custom images can be ordered. They have been used be Kiwibank, Kainga Ora, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and more.

There is also an option to apply to become a photographer and earn 50% commission.

Week 01 - Studio and SDL

For our first studio session we began with understanding and breaking apart the brief. Manipulating images isn't exactly my strong point, so I'm going into this assignment with a few concerns. I'm hoping that I'll be able to figure something out and find a style and approach that I'm happy with.

We began with working on our class-wide image bank. I journeyed around the outskirts of campus and snagged a few shots to add to the image bank.

Above are a selection of the photos I took today. I tried not too get too technical or over the top with these ones, since I'm still trying to find my footing with the brief. Since these photos are potentially destined to be used by other students I wanted to keep them as open as possible - so that they could be reintegrated into a digital setting. These photos are not perfect, but they're a good start.

SDL - Readings and responses

A brief history of photography and the truth of an image.

The article asks a compelling question: What does truth mean? The camera is able to capture something that the eye cannot typically see, does that make photography untruthful? I don't think so. While photography can create for a distorted image, the intent is still the same. The image is made up of reality, regardless of how that reality ends up in the final exposure. Longer shutters may produce blurring that we often don't see with the naked eye, but the photograph is still made up of real movement and objects. An image loses it's truthfulness when we start artificially adding or removing something from the world itself. Altering the 'reality' of the image is what set's true documentary photography apart from spliced edits.

The article also bring up the artistic integrity of photography, and questions what makes photography 'art', a nebulous word that seems practically boundless in definition. To me, art needs to have some sort of intent behind it: what does the artist want to convey with their piece, and how successful or potent is the outcome? Staged photography is a good example of 'typical' art. The framing and composition of a photograph is also its own artform, and a display of skill - much like painting or drawing. It's very easy to blur the lines of what is considered as art, but it's the thought and intent that truly counts. Everything else is how you choose to communicate that.

A manipulated image that I've encountered online is the classic "Tourist Guy". It's one of those viral images that has little info surrounding it, apart from the obvious and shocking scene it depicts. It was shared around, and described as a photograph taken atop of the World Trade Centre, as a plane soars towards the building. The picture was unsurprisingly edited, with the creator splicing in an image of a plane into the backdrop. The image surfaced shortly after September 11th, and periodically pops back up across the internet. It seems to be in a constant cycle of rearing it's head to new viewers, who without knowing better accept the image as reality. It's an interesting phenomenon that is all too often these days, especially with AI generated pictures going viral every other week.

I made an effort to add more photos to our shared bank, going out and photographing in the city and around my neighbourhood. At the moment I've been interpreting the checklist quite literally, and staying within my comfort zone. After I manage to fill all of the categories i might let loose a bit and try out some more 'interesting' compositions. But for now I'm quite happy with what I've got so far.

Week 1 SDL 7-10 Favourite Images

Photo series - Making photographs look like they were AI generated - I had lots of fun creating these and doing lots of editing. This was an interesting series, and I had lots of fun making these unsettling images. There were editing choices like lights + texture that were added, as often in ai generated photographs things are slightly wrong. Like there are highlights where there should be shadows and vice versa.

This was a photo mashup I made focusing on textures, this photo is made up of 4 other images all composed on top of each other with different blending modes and photo filters. Even though the focus on this was about experimenting with texture, I also wanted to create an unsettling feeling, so adding in the danger sign + the textures on top of the alleyway added to it. The extra textures made the walkway feel kind of hazy and harder to see through.

These photos were me playing around with long exposure shots as well as using coloured lighting

this is the picture i started with. i did a little bit of soft blending somewhere along the road because the pixelation was kind of killing my vibe but i started here ok and then

did a bunch of work copy pasting the shirt texture just to give up and paint over it with my brushes sd;lkfjg;dslfjg and painting background in over the hair + redoing the neck in places

this is slight touchups to her eyes which i actually did later in the process but is on the next layer up lmao. it was because her eyes looked too dark/too different from the rest of the image after i painted in the hair more

i made her brows a little thicker and i think touched up lip color

the scrape and split lip (mandatory additions. (not really but i draw her this way a lot okay it's just. it's her vibe she's a little... she's just.))

painted the hair in, pulling colors from the base image, then realizing i needed it to go a little lighter if i wanted the orange to look okay on top of it

orange on most of the hair, a bit of red on the roots and brows. and then i smacked on the freckles and took it all into photopea for more adjustments on the contrast and color balance.
