Pronouncing ん

So far, we’ve looked at and talked about ALL of the Hiragana characters. Hooray! 👍🏾 👏🏾

Now, I’d like to bring attention to a select few of the characters we’ve looked at:

ゃ、ゅ、ょ、っ、ぁ、ぃ、ぅ、ぇ、ぉ、and ー

What do these characters have in common??

The answer is that they don’t actually make any sounds by themselves. They all depend on whatever character appears before them.

As it turns out, ん belongs in this group as well! In fact, the pronunciation of the ん character is so special that it has its own word - はつおん. (はつおん when written as 発音 just means “pronunciation” but when written as 撥音 means “the pronunciation of the ん character”) Even Japanese native speakers may not be aware of this, but the pronunciation of ん changes depending on the character that comes before it! 😱

I’ve chosen 3 different ways that native speakers pronounce ん so let’s take a look a them, one by one.

1) The “M” Sound [m]

The sound combination of “n” with any of those other sounds is actually inconvenient for your mouth to produce. Of course it is possible, but in order for an easier pronunciation and to save time, your mouth basically changes the “n” sound to get ready for the next sound. This results in the sound becoming the “m” sound. Let’s look at an example:

あんまり means “not much” or “not really”. If you pronounced each sound for a small child to repeat, you would say “a-n-ma-ri”. When you say this word in a sentence though, it’s pronounced as “am-mari”.

Here is another example with a famous train station in Tōkyō - しんばし:

See how the ん is written as an “m” in the romaji spelling?

Here are some more examples:

こんばんは = good evening (pronounced as kom-ban-wa)* じゅんび = preparation (pronounced as jum-bi) ぜんぶ = all, everything (pronounced as zem-bu) ————- えんぴつ = pencil (pronounced as em-pitsu) さんぽ = a walk, a stroll (pronounced as sam-po)

Here is a great video from a channel called ひろのはつおん with him pronouncing ん as the “m” sound.

2) The ”NG” Sound [ŋ]

Our next pronunciation of ん is as the “NG” sound, like in the English word “sing”. If you focus on how you say the words “sink” and “sing” you’ll notice that these words both have the “ng” sound.

Some Japanese examples are:

げんかん = entrance or entryway (pronounced as “geng-kan”) げんき = lively, energetic (pronounced as “geng-ki”) てんき = the weather, good weather (pronounced as “teng-ki”) でんき = electricity (pronounced as “deng-ki”) べんきょう = study (pronounced as “beng-kyō”) ゆうびんきょく = post office (pronounced as “yū-bing-kyoku”) ぎんこう = a bank (pronounced as “ging-kō”) おんがく = music (pronounced as “ong-gaku”) こんげつ = this month (pronounced as “kong-getsu“) ばんごう = (pronounced as “bang-gō“)

3) The Nasalized Vowel Sound [Ṽ]

This pronunciation of ん is a bit tricky. When it comes before any of those characters, it is basically pronounced as a more nasalized version of the “n” sound. Try humming the “n” sound from your nose and you will get this version of ん.

Now, take a look at the next 3 words:

げんいん げにん (be careful!) げいいん (ambiguous)

げんいん means “cause” or “original source”. It’s very important that you pronounce the ん separately from the い. If you pronounce it as “ge-nin” (げにん) you are saying “a low-rank person” or “a peasant”! If you pronounce it as “gei-in” (げいいん) the meaning becomes “over drinking”!

“Over drinking” is ONLY pronounced as げいいん. Interestingly though, because the pronunciation of げんいん and げいいん are so close, BOTH have become associated with the “cause” meaning. This leads to even native speakers getting confused sometimes!

Here are 2 more words where the first pronunciation has evolved into 2 choices for the same meaning:

ふんいき (now ふいんき is also possible) = vibe or atmosphere はんおう (now はんのう is also possible) = response, replying

The next set of words are all pronounced with the nasalized vowel sound:

あんしん = peace of mind, relief ぜんしん = whole body でんしゃ = a train こんしゅう = this week ぶんしょう = sentences せんせい = teacher, doctor, master じんせい = one’s life せんそう = war —————— きんようび = Friday —————— でんわ = telephone, or a telephone call ほん を = a book, or books (as the direct object of an action)

Conclusion

There you have it! There are actually more pronunciations of ん** but we won’t get into them here. I believe that if you are simply aware of the 3 pronunciations we talked about in this post, you will be more than on your way to excellent spoken Japanese. Also, it’s important to train your ears to hear the subtle differences in these pronunciations. Native speakers are often not aware of what they are saying but they sure do pick up on mistakes or variations quickly! No worries though; this is part of the learning experience!

I walk into the venue with my boys, aitch , tays and filly. We're all joking about how greasy Pingus hair is. "Bit quiet in here, no music yet." Filly says and aitch and tays agrees. "Yeah true. Oh well, it'll probably come on later." "Yeah fairs." Aitch says. Looking at them, id say they sharpened up well and id say, so did I. I instantly spot the sidemen over in the corner of the room and say hello to them.

"There's my best mate!" I hug Simon. "Yes ginge you okay son!" "Yeah I'm doing good Simon, thank you! How've you been?" "Eh you know, this and that, just sorting out the podcast and Sidemen vlogs." "Fair enough."

Some time after talking to them, i tell them I'm about to go and get a drink. "Eh lads, just nippin to the bar." "Alright sweet." Tays says as they carry on talking.

I walk over to the bar and lean on the counter. "Hey mate, can I have a disorano and coke please." "Yeah course mate, one sec." "Cheers." I gaze around the place and come across some gorgeous girl looking at me but then quickly looking away. She quickly turned, talking to her mates about something. I wonder who she was, she looked stunning..

I eventually get my drink and walk back to the boys. "Eh boys, come here a sec." I pull em away to near where the girl was sat but not tooo close for her to hear us. "What's up man?" Filly asks. "Well boys..." I tell them about mine and that girls' encounter before and how I felt. They took a sneaky glance at her and then back at me. "Eh she seems nice and looks beautiful aswell." Filly says. "She looks nice her." Tays says. "Yeah man she's a good bit of kit I can't lie." Aitch says mischievously. "Eh you!" We all laugh a little but not too loud.

"I'm not sure whether I should speak to her or not but I don't wanna make her feel a bit weird or anything." "Look man, wait till she speaks to you first, if not, get your final chance at the end of the night to speak to her. And if there's a change of plan later, so be it." Aitch says. "Thats alright that to be fair." Filly says. "That'll probably work hopefully." I nod and agree.

Me and the boys just talk regularly about random things. Until suddenly, we here a comment made by the girls mate that caught my surprise. The girl whines and puts her head in her hands and her mate says something like, 'i bet you'll be sounding like that with Ginge later'. Me and the boys can't help but laugh at it a bit. I notice the girl turn around embarrassed and mouthe the word 'sorry' to us. I wink back to let her know that it's fine.

She quickly turns her head round to her mates as if I've done something to shock her. I brush it off my head as it's probably embarrassment from what her mate has said. Me and the boys walk away back to where we were so we can discuss further on this girl as we've got some new information.

"Nah I reckon she wants it." Aitch says. "No but I reckon that her mate is winding her up and why would she want to hook up with someone like me anyway?" "Nah bro you're good-looking!" Tays says. "You're calm lad trust me, you're a nice man, any girls would be lucky." "Yeah bro, don't say that! And you're a fucking kind human being!" "Thank you-" I say. "Im telling you bro, she wants it." Filly says. I just sigh in disbelief. Music finally comes on. "Thank fuuuckk." Aitch says. "Bout pissin time aswell!" Tays says. Filly smiles as usual.

Me and the boys just chat for a bit and how we're gonna keep it chill. It might be worth not trying, she might feel uncomfortable or whatever. Idk, we'll see..

Dangerous Romance Ep 8 Stray Thoughts

Last week, Sailom told Kanghan that if he wants to be his lover he has to get with his friends. Sailom told him he couldn’t just use his money for that, so Kanghan tagged along with them to buy supplies. Kanghan tried to be tough, but he’s a rich boy who passed out in the heat. Then the show decided to have Sailom be unsteady on a bus he uses everyday so Kanghan could catch him. Auto suggested Kanghan actually use his money for them since they’re broke, and so Kanghan took them to a club. The police showed up and caught Auto. Kanghan stepped up to help rescue Auto, leading to problems for Kanghan’s dad. Kanghan missed the final point of their football match, but Guy told Sailom to go take care of Kanghan because he and Auto already knew. These two are now official in a moment that was supposed to be cute, but irked me because they made Sailom look dumb again. Meanwhile, Saifah has wormed his way into becoming the grandmother’s caretaker, so he’s definitely going to fuck this up for everyone.

Visually I think Papang and Chimon were a good choice to play brothers.

I need someone who grew up in Asian school systems to explain how the grading system works. In the US, 65 is still a failing grade.

I think I’ll have to ask one of the Thai speakers later if Kanghan did a cute thing with pronouns when they translated “faen-ja” as “boyfie”

Perth and Chimon are cute together. I really hope we get a better show from them next year.

I’m not even sure how I want to read Sailom being frustrated with Kanghan about not showing up for tutoring. This show seemingly wants it to be about Kanghan’s ability to change and the impact on the romance, but for me I’m still focused on the debt looming over Sailom and Name’s willingness to inflict violence on them for that.

Curious about the grandmother buying the expensive medicine for Saifah. I half-expected him to consider stealing the medicine and selling it to use a generic instead, but now he’s faced with someone choosing to be kind to him.

Yes, let’s check in with Pimfah to reassure the audience that Sailom is misunderstanding Kanghan and he should maybe not be mad.

The cinematography of this apology scene is good, even if I feel like the stakes are constantly shifting in this show.

It’s very weird having the rich boy and poor guy pairing going with the same shit going down in Only Friends with Sand and Ray.

I wonder where these two will run away to. I still don’t think I get Sailom.

Next week: We’re surprised when a card gets canceled while trying to him ‘em up style. Sigh.

It’s really worrisome for me when the best parts of a BL are happening in the side character drama. The best moments this episode were mostly around Saifah, because I just don’t get what’s going on with Sailom.

felt like i should get some art in this weekend so here’s some little doodles of most of the high calamities. naturally, i’m still struggling to nail down azathoth’s design but i’ll get there at some point im sure. I’d like to say 6, 8 and 9 are ever so slowly coalescing into character ideas… but not really. these are big positions that rightfully need to be filled by the proper ocs. every high calamity might be graded as mercedonius, but not everyone graded as mercedonius is a high calamity, after all. does anyone know what that means. i don’t know if i’ve posted enough rambles yet.

everyone bar trinajm and demi have had their palettes tweaked a bit. i’m happy with where nam nams and demi are at design wise and thank god for that because it feels like it took me a million iterations to get here.

ging’s design is one i can say i’m not that happy with. i like his current design conceptually, but honestly, i feel like i could do a lot better as a whole. i sort of want to play around with what kind of kind of animal he resembles. and also give him a consistent outfit while i’m at it too. someone remind me to draw his shamisen again sometime. speaking of which, it’s one of the imperial regalia grade relics! isn’t that neat?

it’s been years since I tried to color father, and it’s let me remember that i’m not really sure what his skin tone is. with viné and asmodeus having demonic skin tones since their descent into hell i’m not all too sure what camp to throw him in. his all black outfits look better in my head so for now i’ve given him his classic lavenderish black look. he looks okay! maybe i’ll have to make him look more like blackjack from blackjack

i really don’t know what i’m doing with colors for qiyama’s design as yama materia. like seriously. i definitely like this red variant compared to the previous blue, but like… I dunno… i’m not sure what to do. he looks good as uncolored lineart for sure but i gotta figure out SOMETHING. This is okay for now. Whatever.

i’m planning on turning these doodles into stickers to print once i get them cleaned up a little. Or get someone else to redraw them. I’m gonna throw em on my phone case!!! And theyll live there forever!!!! Muahahahaha!!!!!

Also, I got a new stuffed animal. He's 3 pounds and was $15 and I named him after one of the characters from the game. He's a dinosaur and he's fucking huge. He's bigger than my cat, who is ~15 lbs and long haired. She's about the size of your average Papillion so she's pretty big.

I also feel like you're gonna love Sam just because he's an asshole. I can't wait for you to meet the second antagonist... And I know the bloopers by heart. Whenever I replay the game, I hear a certain line and just repeat the blooper that came from that line.

Billy’s pov: “it’s another day, but it’s Tuesday, which means I have to take Max to get ice cream.” I rolled my eyes and picked out an outfit(use imagination) did my hair, brushed my teeth, and walked downstairs to eat breakfast. “MAX GET UR ASS DOWN HERE SO WE CAN GO.” I yelled, grabbing the car keys. “ OK OK IM COMING JEEZ” max walked downstairs ready to go.

The car ride was silent again, until max spoke. “Did you actually want to get me ice cream, or is it an excuse to flirt with Steve?” She asked. I froze, “did she know about what happened?” I thought to myself. “Look dipshit, I’m not flirt with Steve! We will get that ice cream and go.” I rolled my eyes, getting annoyed . “Whatever..” she said with a huff, looking out the window of the car.

We got to the mall, and walked up to scoops, and there he was, ofc with his friend, but Steve Harrington. “King” Steve. Pretty boy himself, in his little sailor outfit, it was cute.

“Yeah. Fine . I do. I fucking do. I fucking like Billy Hargrove!” I hear from a distance, it was coming from Steve himself, so I smirked.

“Ah-em” I coughed, waiting. Robin walked quickly to the back room, leaving me and max with him. “What happened pretty boy? Someone lost their voice?”i said smirking. “I-I-I-“ he couldn’t get out a word.he felt like he couldn’t breathe, he started getting dizzy, but somehow after a while he manage to snap out of it and finally say something.

Hey there ginge” “Just get me my ice cream.” Max said as she rolled her eyes at him causing me to chuckle. “And you?” He asked “Mint.” Me and max waited for the ice cream. He finished scooping max’s ice cream before giving her it and started scooping mine

I looked over at Steve scooping the ice cream, and he paused and said “I want to talk.” “About what.” I said while he was continuing to scoop my ice cream “Yesterday.” “Look. We can talk about that another time. I’m with my sister and I don’t want her to know. Okay?” I said, looking over at max Steve only responded by giving him the ice cream. “That’ll be $5.39 cents.” I gave him my normal death stare, gave him his money, and walked off, before he could have said anything further.

Max looked at me while licking her ice cream, and asked “what was that all about?” “Nothing don’t worry about it, let’s just go home.” I said while walking to the car, still licking the ice cream.

The car ride was more awkward than the ride before, it was quiet like the same, but it just fell off, it felt weird and uncomfortable. We ate our ice cream before heading inside.

Max walked in first, going to her room, I opened the door and saw Niel, waiting for me like always.(unless he went out drinking)

“did you buy her ice cream.?” “Yes sir.” “Did you yell at her.?” “No sir.” “Good, it’s your responsibility, you have to take care of her, do I make myself clear.?” “Yes sir.” “Now go to your room, me and Susan won’t be home tomorrow.” “Yes sir.”

I walked away, walking upstairs to my room, “good, I’m glad you won’t be here.” I whispered, closing my door. I changed into just sweatpants again, and laid on my bed, thinking.

“Why does he wanna talk about what happened yesterday?” “Maybe it was just a mistake.” “I don’t like him.” “I can’t like him, I can’t.” “But.. fuck Steve Harrington. He was perfect, everything about him was. And how pretty he was.” “Fuck.. I can’t like him, even if I wanted to.” Or maybe.. I can..?

I thought to myself, for a few hours, I don't know why but since yesterday I just kept thinking about him, Steve Harrington. The boy I'm supposed to hate, the guy I can't even date. If my dad found out, he would kill me.

He almost did back in Cali. When he saw that I brought a guy home, my friend. My friend was scared for his life, he didn't know that Niel was like that. After he kept yelling at me which felt like hours, my friend didn't talk to me. He didn't talk to me for weeks, or months even, with no contact, he switched all of his classes, didn't sit with me at lunch, just kept ignoring me.

Until Niel thought it was best to move somewhere else, so I can "change" back to the son he wanted me to be. He didn't like me liking or saying guys, he wanted to to date or like girls. That's why we moved to Hawkins Indiana.

The place sucked, the weather was different, it didn't feel nice. I had to change schools too, which made it even "better" the whole experience of moving was awful. He wouldn't stop lecturing me about not liking guys anymore. I thought I didn't like any guys anymore, until I saw him, Steve Harrington.

We became close but, my dad wouldn't like that so I told him we should act like rivals, enemies even. Steve questioned at first, but then just went with it? We planned fake fights, I'd call him names, push him when we played basketball. It's been like that for year now.

But something about him.. ugh it made my stomach have butterflies every time I saw him in class. He made it so hard not to like him, but before.. he did have a girlfriend, her name was Nancy wheeler I think? I don't know, but I didn't like her one bit. Heard she cheated on him with a guy named Jonathan? Weirdo.

And now.. he's single, the former "king" lost his girlfriend to a weirdo, isn't even king anymore, and yet.. I still get butterflies?
