“Well, there’s an opportunity for fear around every corner, fear of the future, fear of what if,” Anderson says. “But the acceptance of wherever we are, whoever we are, is freedom. So, you know, I can sit and bemoan the fact that I don’t get the same roles, or bemoan the fact that my skin is starting to look like chicken skin, or bemoan whatever it is. But that’s not reality. That’s fighting reality.”

“Oh, there are so many things that I’m bad at. I’m bad at anything that has to do with IT. I’m bad at remembering anything from my actual life other than lines for, say, a play. Just so many things.”

"It's like, if you're dealing with a rattlesnake, the only way to be able to continue is to always remember it's a rattlesnake. If you forget, you're dead. There's a certain amount of fearful respect that has to go into acknowledging the potential of panic attacks in your life. I bow down to them. Please, not today."

"David and I are closer now than we have ever been. Look, when you are working with somebody for such an intense period of time, of course you don't want to see them outside work. I didn't want to see the girl who was doing my hair every day, either. There are inherent complications in such forced marriages. In other countries the men get to beat the women; thankfully, that doesn't fly in America. It was an important time for both of us. So we worked a lot of things out together in a psychological and metaphysical way." - Gillian Anderson, The Irish Times (August 20, 2005)

"We'd walk down the street and give the finger to [whoever stared at] us," she recalls. "We'd go hear bands and smash against each other and jump off the stage. It was cool to get hurt. I needed to express my anger, because I had a lot of it - and I still do. I was never very good at expressing other emotions," adds Anderson. "I did everything I could not to feel pain."

"I try in my life to follow my heart," she says softly, "not just in relationships but in terms of what moves me and what is important to me in my life. I know what it feels like to do things that are soul-decaying, and a large aspect of life in Hollywood I find incredibly soul-decaying. I choose -- albeit with some frustration to other people in my life -- not to expose myself too much to that. I now live in a country I absolutely love, in a city I am awakened by and educated by on an almost daily basis. I [also] spend a lot of time in Africa. I get to do amazing theatre. I get to live this incredible life."
