I got an ask about commissioning me to deglue some doll heads and I don't do that for people.

It's a pain in the butt and I don't want to.

And, while I will say "I figured out the solution to Mattel's head glue", it was truly a collaborative effort.

@dolldirt mentioned using a floor cleaner and it worked, but he's not in the US and that floor cleaner didn't exist, here.

I decided screw it, I'll try this multi-purpose cleanser I COULD get called L.A.'s Totally Awesome and it worked (no others did)! So that's what I've been recommending to people, though it's a long, slow process and not very fun.

@firespirited did some research on the ingredients in the floor cleaner and Totally Awesome, found they both share ethoxylated alcohol (at least, I think that's what it was), did more research and found the same ingredient in CIF Cream cleanser (sometimes JIF, depending on region), but CIF also wasn't available in the states so I kept recommending Totally Awesome.

Scrub Daddy acquired CIF not too long ago, and now CIF is available here.

Where Totally Awesome can take a few days of soaking to get rid of the glue, CIF works really fast when applied like shampoo. However, that does only clean the hair on the outside of the head and not the glue inside the head whereas soaking in Totally Awesome will get the glue inside the head, too, so it would need to be redone now and then.

Regardless, it's great to have another option that works to remove the glue instead of just covering it up and hopefully it'll become even more readily available over time.

Here's my custom freaky fusions. I tried to keep the same vibe of the characters, it's just to more my taste that the dolls are more fashion doll rather than 60% plastic figure. I am surprised that for this line everyone got full heads of saran and no leaky gluehead though, so it's definitely made me appreciate the dolls more than a line that I've avoided for the better part of a decade.

It was one of those rare mornings when Izuku woke, the bed was still warm. The other half still occupied by the silently breathing blond.

Izuku wasted no time turning over, propping himself momentarily on an elbow. The soft glow of a barely risen sun snuck through the slats of haphazardly closed curtains covering the window opposite the bed, allowing emerald eyes to take in the glorious gift beside him. The rays cast streaks of gold across pale skin, igniting stray strands of messy platinum with soft copper tones, and highlighting the near-invisible dusting of chest hair across sculpted pecs.

The arm closest to Izuku was partially stretched out - bent at the elbow, forearm hidden beneath the pillow cushioning the blond’s head. The position made his bicep bulge, beautifully displaying each divot between hardened muscle, while revealing the strips of serratus leading toward the broad curve of his lat spread against the mattress.

It had been nearly four years of drinking in the sight of waking up next to Katsuki, but Izuku didn't think he'd ever tire of it. How could he when the blond was the most incredible creature to ever walk this Earth, and Izuku got to call him his? His Kacchan.

Sometimes, especially in moments like these, it still felt surreal. Like Izuku would suddenly wake up and realize the past four years had been nothing but a fever dream. That he was still in a coma after the war and this Kacchan was nothing more than a figment of his imagination.

Rather than dwell on the negative thought process, the greenette took advantage of Katsuki’s position and carefully maneuvered himself to where he knew all too well he fit like a puzzle piece. Face tucked in the nook between Katsuki’s jaw and shoulder, chest nestled against his side, an arm across the blond’s chest, and a leg hooked on his hip.

Izuku couldn't help but to inhale deeply, relishing in Kacchan’s intoxicating scent of something akin to burnt sugar with a distinct natural spice entwined. He filled his lungs with the sweet musk, nuzzling his face more securely against the satin-soft skin on the expanse of Katsuki’s neck, his heart palpitating with the onslaught of emotion that rapidly filled him.

The hand Izuku had across Katsuki’s chest traced over the length of his collarbone to his shoulder, and down his arm. Committing every bump, curve, and scar to memory over and over again despite how well he already knew every inch of his explosive partner. Izuku dragged his finger tips back up, retracing his path before letting them ghost over the slightly puckered scar beneath his collar, and finally to the broad patch of marred skin in the center of his chest. They were scars that Katsuki wore proudly in a show of protectiveness toward Izuku - something he liked to put on display as a reminder of just how far the blond was willing to go to protect what he cared for. Who he cared for.

Izuku’s heart strained almost painfully in his chest as the love and adoration swelled once again. He would protect Kacchan with his life a million times over, for as long as he was still breathing. He swore it, swore it, swore it.

A large, calloused, searing hot hand suddenly covered Izuku’s own. “Oi, nerd, quit huffing on me like a fucking gluehead. Shit tickles.” Katsuki’s voice was rough with sleep, but his gravelly tone held nothing but affection.

“Sorry, Kacchan. Didn't mean to wake you.” Izuku adjusted, settling his cheek in the concave of Katsuki’s shoulder where it was particularly pillowy with muscle. He hooked his thumb over the blond’s knuckles, squeezing a fraction tighter.

Katsuki grunted in response, maneuvering the arm Izuku was partially laying on to lazily drag his fingers through soft green curls.

“I didn't know you had today off, too.” Izuku spoke again after a beat of silence, relishing in the way Kacchan’s deft fingers carded through his hair, nails scratching pleasantly against his scalp every so often.

“Thought it’d be a nice surprise, or some shit. It feels balls early, go back to sleep. You've got all day to stare at me, or whatever creepy shit you've been doin’.” Despite his words, Kacchan’s hand never stalled on the greenette’s head.

Izuku couldn't help the blush that heated his face. Kacchan wanted to surprise me! God, I love him, I love him, Ilovehimlovehimlovehim - Kacchan always wanted to surprise him, really, but it never got old. The blond knew him better than he knew himself, of course, so it didn’t take that much effort to catch Izuku off guard.

Doing a last minute shift switch to get an impromptu day off together. Izuku coming home after a particularily rough patrol to a candlelit bathroom, the tub filled and steaming hot with his favourite eucalyptus scented bubble bath, a glass of his favourite “disgustingly sweet, I don’t fucking know how you drink that shit” white wine already waiting on the edge. A particularly pleasing breakfast item that would make an appearance once in a blue moon that would have Izuku doing a happy dance in his seat (“Calm down, Tickle-Me-Hawks-ass-nerd. It’s just a crepe.”). An in-box, limited edition piece of All Might merch Izuku didn’t have with a bouquet of green roses, adorned with an orange ribbon waiting for him on the kotatsu. A new notebook and a pack of those super nice glidy pens. The list was endless.

There was just so much Kacchan did to surprise him, and no matter how mundane (like the time Kacchan bought that particular shampoo Izuku mentioned he liked the scent of like, maybe once, in passing) he still couldn’t help but to respond as if Katsuki had literally given him the moon. He may as well have, because everyday Izuku woke up and was reminded that Kacchan was the other half of their “Wonder Duo”, that they lived together and shared a bed, that Kacchan was his boyfriend, his partner, his everything - it was like being gifted the moon over and over again.

A smile spread across Izuku’s face as he nuzzled his cheek against Katsuki’s soft skin, a faint murmur of, “Kacchan sugoi,” escaping his lips.

The man in question squeezed Izuku where he held him, a small smile of his own tugging at the corner of his mouth. “Such a damned nerd.”

got my hands on fearbook draculaura and toralei (twyla was sold out so i still need to hunt down her and spectra because the only spectra there had a poor screening) and they're SUCH good dolls but oh my god toralei's hair is a fucking nightmare. We asked them for short hair and they gave us karen with a gluehead 😭 it's fine i was going to customize her anyway but that was a full on helmet. i've noticed there tends to be a lot of color variation with toralei and mine had a darker head than body but i had another toralei with the opposite problem so i'll just bodyswap them i guess lol

Guess what I got.

What's funny is it smells EXACTLY like L.A.'s Totally Awesome.

My first attempt at using CIF cream to get rid of Mattel's head glue was on a Summer who's hair was CAKED in glue all the way to the tips.

Those lines on her face were me trying out a new 00000 paintbrush.

CIF didn't work. At least, it didn't work as fast and easy as it seemed to work for people on Instagram.

She's on her sixth shampooing or so and I accidentally let the cleanser sit for a few days and she's still gluey.

I just tried CIF on a Barbie who's hair wasn't as bad.

She only had about a half-inch of glue soaking.

CIF seems to have worked better on her hair, though I won't know if it's clean until after she's had time to dry.

Regardless, neither of these dolls had the glue inside their heads treated with this method so it's taking just as much time as and is less effective than a regular T.A. soaking would have been for Summer.

Whether or not their hair is clean after this, they still have glue inside their heads that will continue to leech out over time and will have to be re-treated repeatedly unless they get a good whole-head treatment to dissolve the glue inside their heads as well.

Oh my god i need help. Her glue head is so bad. Ive already tried goo gone on a different doll and it didnt do anything so i am NOT testing it on this. I dont want anything to happen to her face. What do i do D: ive washed her with soap and conditioner and this is what she looks like after shes DRIED............

Parcel!

Got a second parcel from @musicalmeowsandcandiedlemons​, i’d completely forgotten even though she’d told me because my brain is currently a sieve (i have multiple to do lists for the basics like “feed yourself” at the moment). So that was a wonderful surprise!

The parcel contained 6 Mattel glue heads, 4 normal heads, 1 small bust body, 1 Fairytopia Lumina body and some ramie hair.

I decided to start with the non glue heads:

Internal monologue was like: ooh I wonder who she is, she’s gorgeous but wow that nylon has felted bad. who would do this?

neck damage... oh! I know exactly who did you dirty: disney with their stay in the box, don’t brush ‘tude and THAT anvil neck anchor where the top part is somehow made from the hardest plastic known to man.

So post hair removal, I remove some staining with alcohol and do my injection while I’m at it, then acetone, then benzoyl peroxide and two days on the sunlit balcony for this gal.Then a boil and we’ll choose new hair or a wig.

Kitty! With a cool spot pattern and dip dyed hair of some kind.

Now you might think that looks like whiteboard felt tip, go with alcohol! but I took a photo to show why that’s a bad idea: alcohol smears felt tip so go with acetone or vaseline and soap or something like the WD40 stain remover pen. Kitty has pink ink stains to her lip and cheek so it was ok to remove the blush so I used acetone. She’s soaking right now just in case the hair dye was done with acrylic. She’ll get acne cream later.

Snapstar Lola. Let’s disregard the 80s blue eyeshadow and white based blush, her makeup is uneven: the lips are to the side slightly but the lower eyeliner/lashes are totally different sizes. top liner is uneven too. The eyes are half round hollow 10mm like LIV but unlike LIV they are lined with a very thin layer of white paint which scratches just from pushing behind the eyewells. Easily remedied with some acrylic paint but an odd thing. Same with the neck-hole which extends deep up to her nose.

I removed the lower eye makeup, added a brown and red pastel blush to even things out a little. Note: the eyewells tear very easily even with undersized eyes. Snapstars are just not my jam.

Wildhearts Jacy has thickly and beautifully rooted nylon hair but the neck and eye design baffles me. I gave her a quick cupids bow and reset her hair. I’m thinking her sclera need that pink over painting, I can felt-tip the eyes brown or dark green and add some blush then see where to go from there.

I prepped four glue heads to go in the ethoxylated alcohol solution, by brushing the two i could, detinselling Cleo and putting them all in tight buns. I used monkey sized orthodontic elastics that will withstand the solution without melting or snapping. I need to find the right containers tomorrow. Probably clear plastic cups.

Summer is from the fashionistas era, they went from nice earth tones in the Cali girl era to Raquelle who’s blue eyes went well with her jet black hair to uncanny looking pale eyes with heavy eyemakeup that somehow looked off. I wasn’t able to save her. She’d need new eyes and a new frontline.

Rochelle’s adorable as always, if a little glue stained around the edges. Boil, superglue and a side part if she gets a reroot for sure.

Protip: after removing icky sticky glue, rub petroleum jelly on the doll and put some inside the neck to swish around during a wash. Petroleum jelly on a paper towel or a rag will clean up your instruments good as new.

Lumina’s body is going to be perfect for PJ! It has a yellow stain to her hand which I’m not going to try and bleach, yellow takes forever or doesn’t budge at all. The legs were coated in green so I gave them an acetone wipe (you can see the difference in the first photo) then I sliced down the neck by a couple of mm, slightly more at the front, added a touch of glue to stabilise the anchor then wrapped it in teflon tape to avoid neck melt. it’s drying right now so photos later this week.

Finally here’s rebodied Janay Blue (from the body in the first parcel) looking radiant dressed as a spring princess.

In the midst of fixing up a bunch of my custom Monster High dolls from back in the day, I was horrified to find my custom Rarity doll basically turned yellow from the severe gluehead she had. I was really upset because this was one of the customs I wanted to keep as is as a memento of my past work.

But I stripped back the head and removed her hair and let her destain for a few months using 40 Vol hair developer to retrobrite her back to her original skin tone.

Eventually I rerooted her to have dark purple hair fron @customdollhairAU and worked on repainting her.

I opted to redo her in a style more reminiscent of the Friendship is Magic series and made her face up more of a clean look rather than stick to my 2013 era "style" I used to do.

I also put a horn on her cuz why not.

Today I did more than cutting my Figuarts - I also cleaned doll hair!

I’ve been fighting with my second Draculaura, whose hair was becoming stickier by the minute. With every product I tried, it became more and more like Rochelle’s. It started to look like she was going to go to the reroot pile and rot there, because I have rerooted exactly 4 plugs ever and that was months ago. I’ll finish that pile, but who knows when...

Then I ran into this forum entry, and inspired by user seansdoll’s tip, I soaked her hair in rubbing alcohol and rinsed it, then left to dry (and I did the same with Rochelle because why the hell not).

It looked wet hours after, so I brushed it and...

Wow.

So soft.

No grease. No stickiness. Nothing.

Just soft, smooth, flowy hair.

I wonder how long it will last (they are both glueheads, no remedy will be 100% final and definitive), but wow. Give it a try. It wastes a lot of alcohol, but they feel better than new.
