Someone accessed my Gmail 2 days ago, compromising my linked accounts like Twitter and YouTube. Here's how it happened, why I fell for it, and what you can learn to avoid making the same mistake:
Tumblr media
The scam I fell victim to was a cookie hijack. The hacker used malicious software to steal my browser cookies (stuff like autofill, auto sign in, etc), allowing them to sign in to my Gmail and other accounts, completely bypassing my 2FA and other security protocols.
A few days ago, I received a DM from @Rachael_Borrows, who claimed to be a manager at @Duolingo. The account seemed legitimate. It was verified, created in 2019, and had over 1k followers, consistent with other managers I’d seen at the time n I even did a Google search of this person and didnt find anything suspicious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She claimed that @Duolingo wanted me to create a promo video, which got me excited and managed to get my guard down. After discussing I was asked to sign a contract and at app(.)fastsigndocu(.)com. If you see this link, ITS A SCAM! Do NOT download ANY files from this site.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I downloaded a file from the website, and it downloaded without triggering any firewall or antivirus warnings. Thinking it was just a PDF, I opened it. The moment I did, my console and Google Chrome flashed. That’s when I knew I was in trouble. I immediately did an antivirus scan and these were some of the programs it found that were added to my PC without me knowing:
Tumblr media
The thing about cookie hijacking is that it completely bypasses 2FA which should have been my strongest line of defense. I was immediately signed out of all my accounts and within a minute, they changed everything: passwords, 2FA, phone, recovery emails, backup codes, etc.
I tried all methods but hit dead ends trying to recover them. Thankfully, my Discord wasn’t connected, so I alerted everyone I knew there. I also had an alternate account, @JLCmapping, managed by a friend, which I used to immediately inform @/TeamYouTube about the situation
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the hackers turned my YouTube channel into a crypto channel and used my Twitter account to spam hundreds of messages, trying to use my image and reputation to scam more victims
Tumblr media
Thankfully, YouTube responded quickly and terminated the channel. Within 48 hours, they locked the hacker out of my Gmail and restored my access. They also helped me recover my channel, which has been renamed to JoetasticOfficial since Joetastic_ was no longer available.
Tumblr media
Since then, I’ve taken several steps to secure my accounts and prevent this from happening again. This has been a wake-up call to me, and now I am more cautious around people online. I hope sharing it helps others avoid falling victim to similar attacks. (End)
(side note) Around this time, people also started to impersonate me on TikTok and YouTube. With my accounts terminated, anyone searching for "Joetastic" would only find the imposter's profiles. I’m unsure whether they are connected or if it’s just an unfortunate coincidence, but it made the situation even more stressful.

My Digital Minimalism Journey
Doomscrolling. Smartphone addiction. Google this, Google that. Sounds familiar? I've begun a journey to untangle myslef from American megacorps and declutter my digital life.
I consider Google the worst big corporation, because while Microsoft and Apple sell products (hardware, software), Google's basically an advertising company. We are Google's products—that's why Google can give us so much for free and still make so much money. "But I have nothing to hide." Me too. I don't commit crimes, I don't watch pornography, I don't do anything classified. If everyone suddenly could see everything I do online, I'd just be slightly embarrased, that's all. But monopolies are illegal and dangerous for a reason. They erode freedom, shape our reality, leave us no alternative, influence our beliefs. I know I'm not immune to this, even though it's easy to believe otherwise.
Another factor I take into account is using local products to support my country's (Poland's) and Europe's economy and security.
Google Search
I noticed long time ago that Google Search became far from ideal, full of ads and focused on shopping. For example, when I looked for information about a medicine, I saw a long list of online pharmacies. I started using Bing, because it gave me information I was looking for—the medicine's description and side effects. (My husband is happy with Google, but his searches involve more shopping, like buying things for his hobbies and renovations.) Recently I've started using Qwant—a French search engine that uses their own index to some extent and Bing. Some people like German Ecosia that uses Google search results AFAIK.
Browser
The problem with browsers is that most of them are based on Chromium (not to be confused with Google Chrome). Chromium, Safari's Webkit and Mozilla's Gecko are like engines beneath the hoods that are browsers. Browsers may have different functions like adblocks, tab management or favourites, but those three are what allows browsers to read and display websites. While Chromium is open source, it's controlled and developed by Google.
I decided to use Mozilla Firefox with turned off telemetry and Qwant and uBlock Origin extensions. Mozilla, though American, is open source and non profit.
Update: I also installed Privacy Badger extension.
E-mail
Almost twenty years ago, as a teenager, I set up my mailbox on Onet—a Polish news portal. When I got married and changed my last name, I changed my mailbox too, to Gmail. Recently I've started using my old mailbox again when I discovered that I could create an alias for my current last name. In my Gmail I set up my mail to be forwarded to my current mailbox and deleted from Gmail. It isn't perfect, because the mail still reaches Google servers, but I changed most logins and I hardly get any mail there.
If you're from Poland, you can check out wp.pl and O2, they have mailboxes too. Otherwise, Swiss Proton and German Tuta are popular, especially amongst those who care much about privacy. Swiss Infomaniak offers a mailbox in Western Europe. There may be some good mailbox providers in your country, you can look it up.
Contacts
I deleted my contacts from Google and store them locally on the phone. I have backups saved on a pedrive and in a cloud.
Calendar
I've started using a paid Polish app called Domownik (dom means home, so the name means it's an app for home, for household matters). I keep my private calendar there and tasks, and recipes, and weekly menu, and a shopping list that I share with my husband, and some notes that I used to keep in Google Keep and Microsoft OneNote. It's Polish and family oriented, so it isn't a good choice for everyone. Some mailbox providers offer calendars too. You may also think about a paper calendar.
Google Drive, OneDrive
I still use them to some extent. We pay for a family plan on OneDrive. Unfortunately, when I checked European providers like Filen, Proton, Koofr, Cryptee, kDrive, Jottacloud, Hetzner... (if you just want a few GB of storage for free, check them out), it turned out OneDrive is cheaper. My husband loves photo remainders there too. I want to use Swiss pCloud where you can pay once for a lifetime. They also offer nice photo gallery and playlists made from your files. I hope I manage to change it this year.
Google Maps
I checked out a few navigation apps like HERE WeGo, Magic Earth and Organic Maps, but eventually decided to use mapy.com (former mapy.cz). You can download one country's map for free and they have great hiking trails map. I know it works best for Czech Republic and its neighbours (which I happen to be), so I'm not sure if it's as good in other countries.
There's an option to share location, but currently I'm the only one in my family who use it, so I haven't had a chance to try it out. Location sharing is the only reason why I'm still keeping Google Maps on my phone. Next time we're visiting my parents I'll try location sharing in WhatsApp and if it works, I could get rid of Google Maps.
For public transport I use Polish app jakdojade.pl.
Google Docs, Microsoft Office
I've used LibreOffice for years (and OpenOffice before that), so I don't need to change much on my PC. However, I used Google Docs and Sheets on my phone. I had a Google Sheets file for recording my weight. I decided I'm going to keep a digital version of that as ODS (LibreOffice file) on my PC (with a backup in a cloud) and I'll start noting my weight and pressure in a notebook, so if I ever have to show it to a doctor, I can just bring it with me. I used to write fanfiction in Google Docs, so I'm either coming back to writing on my PC in LibreOffice or I'll try French Cryptpad.
Update: I ended up using FreeOffice. It isn't perfect, but it works and that's what's most important.
Google Translate
I've started using German DeepL instead.
Social Media
I have a blog and used to have fanpages on Facebook and Instagram. I don't offer any services or sell any products; it's a project born out of passion. Running a fanpage was so time consuming and hardly anyone was interested in my work, so I decided to stop doing it. I still have my blog; I started running a small blog on wordpress.com with updates and interesting links, so that anyone who's interested can subscribe to it via newsletter or RSS app. I write an update only once in a while when I change something on my main website or if I find something interesting. I deleted Instagram and Facebook (I changed there some settings though, to get some most important notifications to my mailbox), and Tumblr too (too much mindless scrolling).
I downloaded an RSS app instead (I chose Bulgarian Inoreader, but there're others). I follow news sites and blogs I like. It's a feed, but it's my feed, in a chronological order, without ads, sponsored content, algorithms and stupid or hateful comments. Just news and blog posts in a chronological order. I noticed I started to actually read articles! On social media apps it was so easy to read a title and go to the comment section immediately.
Podcasts and Music
I follow my favourite YouTube channels in the RSS app and I got rid of YouTube. I listen to my favourite podcasts in Swedish Spotify. We used to have a family plan in Spotify, but we use American Tidal for music now, because it's a little cheaper, there aren't so many YouTube-like podcasts that my son watched (and I don't want him to), and Tidal pays artists three times more than Spotify. Personally, I'd love to come back to having my mp3 files and playing my own music (I only listen to my own playlists anyway), but my family isn't on board. I'll try to buy my favourite songs to support artists a little and find a way to convert my CDs to digital files (I did it years ago, but I got rid of them...).
Films and TV shows
We had Netflix, Disney+, HBO and Prime at one point. Currently we only keep Netflix (where we have lots to watch) and Prime (my husband says it's cheap enough to keep; I'd just get rid of it if it were up to me). We may pay for i.e. HBO for a month when there's something we want to watch.
I love watching TV shows, so I don't want to give up streaming altogether.
Phone
I use an old iPhone. Android is controlled by Google and iPhone is the only Apple thing I use. Degoogled Android like Graphene OS or Dumbphones are too much for me (just like self-hosted cloud).
What Is Difficult To Get Rid Of
I keep Google Family Link and Microsoft Family Safety to have parental control over my children's computers and phones. My children keep using Microsoft Edge browser too because of that. It's less about time limits and mostly about blocking some websites (I want them only to use websites and download apps that I allow them to). I haven't find a better way yet.

The Benefits of Cloud Hosting for Small Business
In the past, hosting websites and apps just required paying a digital platform provider to rent out a single server or computing cluster. Services for web hosting have existed for as long as the internet. Over the past ten years, cloud hosting where the website or application resides on virtual servers dispersed across the cloud has emerged as a popular way to make digital assets accessible online.
A worldwide content delivery network can be connected to by Google Cloud to provide customers with optimal speed and minimal latency when serving material, or a domain can be registered and managed. Google Cloud also provides a range of hosting options for websites and applications.
Tumblr media
What is cloud hosting?
Your data is stored on several servers rather than on a single server, which is what is meant by the term "cloud hosting." The term "cloud" refers to this network of several servers that collaborate to form the network. Cloud hosting services are currently being utilized by a multitude of businesses, both large and small. An investment of this kind is definitely worth the rewards, and it has the potential to achieve great things for your company.
You will have a single platform from which you can manage all of your applications and databases, which will allow you to streamline your operations. The productivity of your firm can also be improved by making an investment in cloud infrastructure resources. The various advantages of cloud hosting will be discussed in further depth in the following paragraphs.
Cloud hosting’s Significance for Small Businesses-
Adopting cloud computing has becoming increasingly important for small organizations. It helps small businesses to avoid the high initial investment and ongoing maintenance costs of having internal IT infrastructure. Small businesses can now access advanced technologies and capabilities that were previously exclusive to large organizations by utilizing the cloud.
What are the applications of cloud computing?
Although you might not be aware of it, there is a good chance that you are currently utilizing cloud computing. Whether you use an online service such as Gmail or Outlook 365 to send an email, collaborate on a document, save data, or stream a video, cloud computing makes it feasible behind the scenes to do all of these things.
Cloud Hosting:
Cloud hosting services make it possible to share a variety of information, such as using email services, hosting applications, using web-based phone systems, and storing data. Hosting your company's website, managing databases, and storing domain names are all things that may be done with a cloud hosting service. The fact that cloud hosting services are located offsite makes it simple to scale up in order to handle peak loads.
Backup services:
Backup services in the cloud are failsafe solutions that can be utilized in the event that your company suffers a server disaster, cyberattack, or other type of data loss. Storage, data synchronization and restoration, real-time backups, archiving, and a high level of security are all features that are included in the top cloud backup services. A great number of cloud storage firms now offer cloud backup and storage capabilities.
Storage in the cloud:
Cloud services guarantee that your data is stored in a cloud storage system that is located offsite, making it more convenient to access from any device or place that is linked to the internet. In cloud storage, you are able to securely exchange information with others and synchronize files across several devices. Companies such as Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, and Google Drive are examples of well-known cloud storage services.
Software as a service
Software as a service, also known as SaaS, is a solution for the distribution of applications that is hosted in the computer's cloud. SaaS solutions can be utilized by businesses in a variety of operational domains. For instance, you may adopt software for customer relationship management (CRM) that is hosted on the cloud, such as Salesforce, for the purpose of managing sales, accounting software, such as QuickBooks Online, for managing finances, and email marketing software for improving marketing communications.
Cloud Solutions' Advantages for Small Businesses-
Affordable
Small firms can minimize their expenditures on hardware, software licenses, and information technology by switching to cloud-based services, which results in cost savings. Companies that provide cloud computing services often provide a pay-as-you-go approach, which enables organizations to only pay for the resources and services that they actually employ.
Protection of Sensitive Information and Disaster Recovery
Cloud service companies adopt stringent security procedures to protect vulnerable information. In addition to this, they provide solutions for disaster recovery and automatic backups, which serves to ensure that vital corporate information is safeguarded, quickly recoverable, and less likely to be lost.
Scalability:
Cloud hosting solutions enable small businesses to swiftly scale their operations up or down as needed without the inconvenience and expense of physically upgrading their gear and software. Scalability includes the ability to scale up or down activities. This flexibility enables adaptability and growth prospects, both of which are essential in a market that is very competitive.
Advantage in the Market
Cloud hosting solutions give small firms the ability to compete on an equal playing field with larger organizations, which gives them a competitive advantage. It is possible for them to obtain insights, streamline operations, and make decisions based on data without breaking the bank by utilizing sophisticated software, analytics tools, and advanced information technology.
Flexibility
As a result of the fact that all that is required to access the cloud is an internet connection, one of the advantages of cloud hosting is that it provides direct remote access to the data that is pertinent to all of your employees, including yourself. If you run a small business, it's possible that you don't have the financial resources to purchase a dedicated office space. People are able to work from any location they choose thanks to this cloud-based technology. Having the ability to operate from a remote location is more important than ever before for the success of a company, especially in light of the recent epidemic.
Increased Capacity for Collaboration and Adaptability
Cloud solutions enable small businesses to communicate with remote team members, clients, and partners in a seamless manner, which helps improve the flexibility and collaboration capabilities of these firms. It makes it possible to share files in real time, modify them simultaneously, and gain access to the most recent versions of documents, all of which contribute to increased productivity and efficiency.
The Most Recent Technology
Cloud hosting eliminates the need for you to worry about the possibility of automatically upgrading and customizing your servers, in contrast to traditional hosting, which does not permit such activities. Scalability is something that may be easily achieved as your company expands and your requirements and preferences shift.
Because cloud hosting businesses are experts in this kind of technology, this is something that can be easily accomplished. Since they have access to more resources, they are able to undertake research and construct systems that are more robust and powerful. You will have access to the most cutting-edge technologies available if you make an investment in cloud infrastructure.
Very little to no upkeep is required
Recall what I mentioned earlier regarding the safety concerns associated with cloud computing. That being said, a portion of that security necessitates the routine maintenance of servers, the updating of software, and the administration of networks. The good news is that cloud computing relieves you of the responsibility of doing all of that upkeep and instead places it in the hands of skilled specialists.
Because none of the equipment is hosted by you, you do not need to be concerned about purchasing newer versions of it every three to four years. You are not required to deal with any of that maintenance, which frees up more time for your firm to concentrate on the product or service that it offers.
Remote access
When it comes to cloud computing, your email account is the ideal illustration. Providing that you have your login credentials and an internet connection, you are able to access your consolidated email account from any computer. Cloud computing is appealing to a majority of businesses because of the convenience it provides. Your colleagues and you will be able to access your work from any location in the globe thanks to the cloud, which eliminates the need to store your work on a desktop computer or on a local area network (LAN) server that is not linked to the internet. Your productivity and freedom in your workspace will both increase as a result of this remote access.
Conclusion-
Through the simplification of procedures and the facilitation of real-time collaboration among members of a team, cloud computing has the potential to boost both efficiency and productivity. It is possible for teams to collaborate effectively regardless of their geographical location or the time zone differences between them if they have shared access to documents and files. In addition, many cloud-based services provide automation technologies that reduce the amount of manual work that employees have to perform, such as data entry or report production. This allows employees to concentrate on high-value tasks that contribute to the success of the company.

💡 What Is a SaaS Solution?
A Beginner’s Guide to Understanding Software as a Service
SaaS stands for Software as a Service. A SaaS solution is a type of software that you don’t need to install — you just use it through the internet, like a service.
Instead of buying software and installing it on your device, you subscribe to it and access it through a browser or mobile app.
🧾 Real-Life Examples of SaaS Solutions
You’ve probably used SaaS tools without realizing it. Some popular examples include:
Google Drive – Cloud storage
Zoom – Video meetings
Shopify – Online store builder
Canva – Design tool
Dropbox – File sharing
These are all full SaaS solutions that help people solve problems using cloud-based software.
🛠️ What Makes It a “Solution”?
A SaaS solution is not just software — it’s a complete service that solves a specific problem.
For example:
Google Docs is a solution for writing and sharing documents online
Trello is a solution for team project management
Netflix is a solution for watching movies without downloading them
So, when someone says SaaS solution, they usually mean a ready-to-use cloud-based tool that offers a complete service to users or businesses.
🌐 Key Features of a SaaS Solution
Here’s what most SaaS solutions include: FeatureWhat It MeansCloud-BasedRuns online (no installation needed)Subscription-BasedYou pay monthly or yearlyAutomatic UpdatesYou always get the latest versionMulti-Device AccessUse it on phones, tablets, or computersScalableGrows with your needs (from 1 user to 1000+)
💼 Who Uses SaaS Solutions?
Small businesses use them to manage work without hiring IT teams
Startups use them to launch faster
Large companies use them to scale globally
Individuals use them for convenience (like Gmail or Canva)
🏢 Example of a SaaS Solution in Business
Imagine a business needs to:
Track customer data
Send marketing emails
Handle online payments
They don’t want to build their own system from scratch — so they choose a SaaS solution like:
HubSpot for customer management
Mailchimp for email marketing
Stripe for payment processing
Tumblr media
All three are SaaS solutions designed to solve very specific needs.
⚙️ How SaaS Solutions Are Built (In Simple Words)
Developers build SaaS products using:
Front-End: What users see (React, Vue, etc.)
Back-End: Logic & servers (Node.js, Python, etc.)
Database: Stores your data (MongoDB, PostgreSQL)
Cloud Services: Host the app (AWS, Google Cloud)
Security: Handles login, data safety, and backups
Once launched, the software runs 24/7 on the cloud and users access it from anywhere.
🔐 Are SaaS Solutions Safe?
Yes — most SaaS platforms offer:
Data encryption
Secure login
Regular backups
GDPR or privacy compliance
Still, it’s always good to choose trusted providers and read their privacy policies.
🎯 Final Thoughts
A SaaS solution is more than just an app — it’s a complete, ready-to-use service that helps you or your business solve a problem, without needing to install or maintain anything.
Whether you're managing projects, building a store, editing documents, or handling customer data — chances are, there's a SaaS solution for that.

Are you Owning an expensive iPhone that is slow? You are not alone in this situation. Many people struggle with the slow speed of iPhones after a few months of purchase.iPhone hardware is usually not the root cause of slowness. Apple spends aggressively on the quality of hardware. This ensures you a quick recovery from bad software. All the apps on the Apple app store are thoroughly reviewed yet you may find some poor performing apps once in a while.I have collected these generic tips that will work on any iOS device including iPhone iPad or iPod.Simplest Thing First: Restart Your iPhoneYou can shut down and restart your iPhone to see if things improve. Most people do not turn off their phone and it makes it sluggish after a few days. Restarting your iPhone once a week may be good for keeping it fresh. You can try other approaches if a simple reboot does not help you.Storage Cleanup: Remove/move Pictures and VideosMost space on any phone is taken by pictures and videos. If you are running low on storage space pictures and videos can be moved to another computer or an external hard drive. This can make room for a lot of apps and will surely improve your iPhone speed. You can use some apps that can automatically backup your photos to network storage or cloud. This way you can easily delete them when you are running low on space.Uninstall Apps That You Don't UseThe simplest thing to speed up your phone is to uninstall all unwanted apps. Many apps are rarely used on phone and you can always download them again when you need them.Even if you had paid for these apps, the app store will not charge you again for deleting and re-downloading them. Each app takes up storage capacity from your phone. You can go to the Settings app and see the storage used by each app.At times, removing mostly used apps will also help save space. E.g. Gmail takes up a lot of space on phone. You can delete it and download it again. This reduces the storage used by the app quickly.Shutdown Open AppsWhen you press the Home button on an iPhone it sends the app to background. This may keep the app running while you are not really using it. You can double press and swipe up to kill all the unwanted apps on any iOS device.Clear Safari Cookie and DataThis is generally a good practice for privacy as well. Many apps that are tracking the location and other data can access it while they are running in the background.Safari stores website cookies and related data in its cache. This data keeps growing over and over. If you think space is too low you can consider deleting website cookies and other data from Safari cache. This may mainly save you space.Reset To Factory SettingsiOS provides an easy way to recover your original factory settings of iPhone. This is helpful when your phone may have been infected by a malware or virus.Factory reset makes you lose all the information on the phone, therefore, take a backup of all critical data on your phone before you reset your phone.Restore From BackupThis may be an option that can be tried when you want to go back to a stable version in your backup. Maybe a recent change caused slowness to your device. This ensures you do not lose any data. Update iOS: Sometimes It May BackfireMany people may not agree with this however at times it helps to not upgrade. iOS upgrades right after the release of an iPhone are considered good for new iOS devices only. There is a perception in the internet community that Apple intentionally introduces the slowness in older versions of iPhones to force users to upgrade to a new iPhone. Many people fear that older version of iPhones may get slower by doing iOS update. I have noticed a lot of rumors about this in past and therefore recommend you proceed with caution. If you are noticing that upgrading your iOS has slowed you down. You can factory reset your iPhone to get the original iOS version it shipped with. This may not be an easy route though since Apple intentionally makes it hard to downgrade.SummaryI hope one of these techniques will help you speed up your iPhone.

How To Make Sure Information On Your Old Computer Is Really, Truly Deleted
It Isn’t As Simple As Pressing ‘Delete’ And Emptying The Trash. Here’s A Step-By-Step Guide.
— By Sean Captain | June 17, 2025 | The Wall Street Journal (WSJ)
Tumblr media
Illustration: Jon Krause
Spring-cleaning season is almost done, and it is time to finally get rid of that old computer. But be very careful before you sell, give away or recycle it.
You could be handing over sensitive information.
Even if you think you deleted everything on it, your old computer may hold lots of personal items you don’t want anyone seeing. In a 2019 study by the University of Hertfordshire (funded by security tech-reviews site Comparitech), researchers purchased 200 used hard drives from the U.S. and U.K. An analysis found data remaining on 59% of the drives, including passport and driver’s license scans, bank statements, utility bills and “intimate photos.”
Just pressing “delete” and emptying the Trash in macOS or the Recycle Bin in Windows won’t do the trick. That’s because your computer maintains an index of where every file resides. Deleting a file erases only its entry in the index, telling your system that it can put new files in that space. But until the system actually does put new files there, the old ones remain accessible. Simple consumer-level file-recovery apps can get at it—never mind professional-grade forensic software.
Here’s how to make sure your data is really gone—even on a computer that won’t start up.
Back-up And Log Out
Start by backing up anything you want to keep. You could drag files onto an external hard drive or use backup software such as the Time Machine app in macsOS. You can also back up to the cloud using Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox or other services. (Don’t empty the Trash or Recycling bin. The wipe process will take care of this.)
Next, log out of applications or games with an online component, so the license is no longer associated with your old computer. Also do this for services like Gmail or Facebook, and web browsers like Chrome that sync your data online—on the admittedly remote chance that an incomplete wipe allows the next owner to access those accounts.
Another step for any type of computer is making sure your files are encrypted—scrambled in a mathematical operation based on very long strings of random numbers and letters called encryption keys. The wiping process will delete the keys to make sure any files that may remain on the machine are unreadable.
What you do next depends on your operating system.
Clearing Out A PC
Windows 10 and the current Windows 11 have a feature called “Reset this PC,” which, with the right settings, thoroughly wipes your data. First, make sure your operating system is up-to-date, as Microsoft recently fixed a bug that sometimes caused the reset process to fail. Press the Windows key, search for “updates” and select “Check for updates.” Install any that are available.
Now check on encryption. In Windows 10 or 11 Home editions, press the Windows key and search for “device encryption settings.” Click “Device encryption settings” on the next screen, then make sure the switch next to “Device encryption” is toggled on. Windows Pro, Enterprise and Education editions have an encryption utility called BitLocker. To enable it, click the Start button, type “bitlocker” and select “Manage BitLocker” from the list of results. (All versions of Windows 10 and 11 also encrypt deleted files.)
Now you’re ready to wipe. Tap the Windows key again, search for “Reset this PC,” then click on it. On the next screen, tap “Reset PC” (Windows 11) or “Get started” (Windows 10), and on the following screen, click “Remove everything.” On the next screen, select “Local reinstall.” (If this doesn’t work, try the “Cloud download” option.) Then click “Change settings,” and on the following screen (under “Clean data?”), toggle the switch to “Yes” and press “Confirm.” On the following screen, press “Next” (Windows 11) or “Reset” (Windows 10). On Windows 11, you will press “Reset” on one more screen. Then let the process run for a few hours.
“Reset this PC” deletes your files, apps and settings, logs you out of your Microsoft account and disables the “Find My Device” feature so the computer is no longer associated with you. Then the serious wiping starts. The encryption keys are deleted, making any encrypted data irretrievably scrambled, and the Clean data option overwrites the ones and zeros that had encoded data on your drive. A clean copy of Windows is also installed.
The MacOS Method
Apple’s “Erase Assistant” feature made its debut in 2021’s macOS 12 Monterey. If your current OS is older, you may be able to update it. To update an older OS to Monterey or a later one, click the Apple menu, then “System Preferences” and “Software Update.” If the update process doesn’t work, jump to “If all else fails” below for another option.
As with Windows, the “Erase All Content & Settings” process should start with encryption. On newer Macs (starting between 2018 and 2020, depending on the model), data is encrypted automatically. Just to be safe, though, turn on a feature called FileVault that adds encryption to older systems and an extra layer to newer ones. Click the Apple icon, then “System Settings” (or “System Preferences” in Monterey). In the next window, click “Privacy & Security” (or “Security & Privacy”), then click FileVault.
Now it is time to wipe. Click again on the Apple icon and “System Settings” (or “System Preferences”), click “General” on the left, then “Transfer or Reset” on the bottom right. Finally, on the next screen, click “Erase All Content & Settings.” (In Monterey, you’ll go there directly from “System Preferences.”)
This process signs you out of Apple services, turns off the “Find My” and “Activation Lock” security measures so that the system is no longer associated with you, and erases all your files, settings, apps and anything else. It deletes the encryption keys, permanently scrambling any data that remains.
If All Else Fails
If your PC or Mac is so old that it can’t run a modern wipe process, you have one more option before seeking pro help. For Windows, several experts recommended the KillDisk app. The $49.95 Professional version runs from a USB drive and overwrites the ones and zeros that encode data on your hard drive with all zeros. Afterward, your computer will no longer boot into Windows unless you reinstall the OS.
For a Mac, your best option is a complex process that Apple describes online.
If these processes sound too complicated, or if your system won’t even turn on, use Apple’s recycling program for Macs or a disposal company that offers hard-drive destruction (or shredding) and recycling for consumers with either type of system. Look for ones that issue a certificate of destruction to verify the process. For instance, Ship ‘N’ Shred accepts drives or whole devices, with prices that include shipping ranging from around $30 to $200.
Modern technology leaves a lot of digital footprints, but at least you can sweep them off your old computer.

Cloud Computing Mastery: How It Works, Best Practices & Future Trends
Introduction
Cloud computing eliminates the need for expensive on-premises infrastructure and offers flexible, on-demand resources through the Internet. From small businesses to large enterprises, cloud computing enhances efficiency, reduces costs, and provides scalability. As organizations strive to keep up with technological advancements, understanding cloud computing’s key concepts, benefits, deployment models, service types, and future trends is essential.
What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services—including storage, servers, networking, databases, analytics, and software—over the internet. Instead of maintaining physical data centers, users can rent computing power from cloud providers, allowing businesses to focus on their core operations without worrying about infrastructure management.
The key concept behind cloud computing is virtualization, where physical resources are abstracted and delivered as scalable services. Cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) offer various services tailored to different business needs.
How Cloud Computing Works
Cloud computing operates through a network of remote servers that process and store data, allowing users to access applications and services on demand. These servers are housed in data centres worldwide, ensuring high availability and disaster recovery.
Some key components of cloud computing include:
Virtual Machines (VMs): Simulated computer environments that allow multiple users to share resources.
Containers: Lightweight, portable environments for running applications efficiently.
APIs (Application Programming Interfaces): Enable applications to communicate with cloud services.
Key Benefits of Cloud Computing
Organizations are rapidly adopting cloud computing due to its numerous advantages. Here are some of the key benefits:
1. Cost Efficiency
Cloud computing eliminates the need for purchasing and maintaining expensive hardware and software. Businesses can pay for only the resources they use, following a pay-as-you-go or subscription-based pricing model. This reduces capital expenditures and allows companies to allocate budgets more effectively.
2. Scalability and Flexibility
With cloud computing, organizations can easily scale their resources up or down based on demand. This is particularly beneficial for businesses experiencing seasonal spikes in traffic or rapid growth, as they can adjust their computing power accordingly without investing in new infrastructure.
3. Accessibility and Mobility
Cloud-based applications enable users to access data from anywhere with an internet connection. This promotes remote work, collaboration, and real-time data sharing, which is crucial for businesses operating globally.
4. Security and Data Backup
Leading cloud providers implement advanced security measures, including encryption, multi-factor authentication, and AI-driven threat detection. Additionally, cloud computing offers built-in disaster recovery solutions, ensuring business continuity in the event of system failures or cyberattacks.
5. Automatic Updates and Maintenance
Cloud providers handle software updates, security patches, and system maintenance, reducing the burden on IT teams. This allows businesses to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure management.
Examples:
Google Workspace (Docs, Drive, Gmail) – Enables online collaboration.
Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook) – Cloud-based office applications.
Dropbox – Cloud storage and file-sharing service.
Deployment Models of Cloud Computing
Cloud computing deployment models define how services are hosted and managed:
1. Public Cloud
Owned by third-party providers and shared among multiple users.
Cost-effective but offers limited customization.
Example: AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure.
2. Private Cloud
Dedicated to a single organization, offering greater security and control.
Suitable for businesses handling sensitive data, such as banking and healthcare.
Example: IBM Cloud Private, VMware Cloud.
3. Hybrid Cloud
A combination of public and private clouds, allowing businesses to balance performance, security, and cost-effectiveness.
Used for data-sensitive operations while utilizing public cloud scalability.
Example: AWS Hybrid, Google Anthos.
4. Multi-Cloud
Utilizes multiple cloud providers to avoid vendor lock-in and enhance reliability.
Ensures redundancy and disaster recovery.
Example: A company using both AWS and Azure for different workloads.
Future Trends in Cloud Computing
As cloud technology continues to evolve, several trends are shaping its future:
1. Edge Computing
Bringing computing closer to data sources to reduce latency and improve efficiency. This is crucial for IoT devices and real-time applications like autonomous vehicles.
2. Serverless Computing
Developers can run applications without managing underlying infrastructure, reducing operational complexity. AWS Lambda and Azure Functions are leading in this space.
3. AI and Machine Learning Integration
Cloud platforms are incorporating AI-driven analytics and automation, improving decision-making and enhancing productivity. Google AI and Azure AI are major players.
4. Quantum Computing
Emerging as a revolutionary field, quantum computing in the cloud aims to solve complex problems faster than traditional computing. IBM Quantum and AWS Braket are pioneers.
5. Enhanced Cloud Security
