In my Zeus bag today so I'm just gonna put it out there that exactly none of the great Ancient Greek warrior-heroes stayed loyal and faithful and completely monogamous and yet none of them have their greatness questioned nor do we question why they had the cultural prominence that they did and still do.
Jason, the brilliant leader of the Argo, got cold feet when it came to Medea - already put off by some of her magic and then exiled from his birthland because of her political ploys, he took Creusa to bed and fully intended on marrying her despite not properly dissolving things with Medea.
Theseus was a fierce warrior and an incredibly talented king but he had a horrible temper and was almost fatally weak to women. This is the man who got imprisoned in the Underworld for trying to get a friend laid, the man who started the whole Attic War because he couldn't keep his legs closed.
And we cannot at all forget Heracles for whom a not inconsiderable amount of his joy in life was loving people then losing the people around him that he loved. Wives, children, serving boys, mentors, Heracles had a list of lovers - male and female - long enough to rival some gods and even after completing his labours and coming down to the end of his life, he did not have one wife but three.
And y'know what, just because he's a cultural darling, I'll put Achilles up here too because that man was a Theseus type where he was fantastic at the thing he was born to do (that is, fight whereas Theseus' was to rule) but that was not enough to eclipse his horrid temper and his weakness to young pretty things. This is the man that killed two of Apollo's sons because they wouldn't let him hit - Tenes because he refused to let Achilles have his sister and Troilus who refused Achilles so vehemently that he ran into Apollo's temple to avoid him and still couldn't escape.
All four of these men are still celebrated as great heroes and men. All four of these men are given the dignity of nuance, of having their flaws treated as just that, flaws which enrich their character and can be used to discuss the wider cultural point of what truly makes a hero heroic. All four of these men still have their legacies respected.
Why can that same mindset not be applied to Zeus? Zeus, who was a warrior-king raised in seclusion apart from his family. Zeus who must have learned to embrace the violence of thunder for every time he cried as a babe, the Corybantes would bang their shields to hide the sound. Zeus learned to be great because being good would not see the universe's affairs in its order.
The wonderful thing about sympathy is that we never run out of it. There's no rule stopping us from being sympathetic to multiple plights at once, there's no law that necessitate things always exist on the good-evil binary. Yes, Zeus sentenced Prometheus to sufferation in Tartarus for what (to us) seems like a cruel reason. Prometheus only wanted to help humans! But when you think about Prometheus' actions from a king's perspective, the narrative is completely different: Prometheus stole divine knowledge and gifted it to humans after Zeus explicitly told him not to. And this was after Prometheus cheated all the gods out of a huge portion of wealth by having humans keep the best part of a sacrifice's meat while the gods must delight themselves with bones, fat and skin. Yes, Zeus gave Persephone away to Hades without consulting Demeter but what king consults a woman who is not his wife about the arrangement of his daughter's marriage to another king? Yes, Zeus breaks the marriage vows he set with Hera despite his love of her but what is the Master of Fate if not its staunchest slave?
The nuance is there. Even in his most bizarre actions, the nuance and logic and reason is there. The Ancient Greeks weren't a daft people, they worshipped Zeus as their primary god for a reason and they did not associate him with half the vices modern audiences take issue with. Zeus was a father, a visitor, a protector, a fair judge of character, a guide for the lost, the arbiter of revenge for those that had been wronged, a pillar of strength for those who needed it and a shield to protect those who made their home among the biting snakes. His children were reflections of him, extensions of his will who acted both as his mercy and as his retribution, his brothers and sisters deferred to him because he was wise as well as powerful. Zeus didn't become king by accident and it is a damn shame he does not get more respect.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#It's Zeus Apologist day actually#For the record Jason is my personal favourite of these guys#The argonauts are extremely underrated for literally no reason#And Jason's wit and sheer ability to adapt along with his piousness are traits that are so far away from what usually gets highlighted#with the typical Greek warrior-hero that I've just never stopped being captivated by him#Conversely I still do not understand what people see in Achilles#I respect him and his legacy I respect the importance of his tale and his cultural importance I promise I do#However I personally can't stand the guy LMAO#How do you get warned twice TWICE both by your mother and by Athena herself that going after Apollo's children is a bad idea#And still have the audacity to be mad and surprised when Apollo is gunning for Specifically You during the war you're bringing to His City#That You Specifically and Exclusively had a choice in avoiding#ACHILLES COULD'VE JUST SAID NO#I know that's not the point however so many other members of the Greek camp were simply casualties of Fate in every conceivable way man#Achilles looked at every terrible choice he could possibly make said “Well I'm gonna die anyway 🤷🏽” and proceeded to make the choice#so hard that he angered god#That's y'all's man right there#I left out Perseus because truthfully I don't actually know much about him#I haven't studied him even a fraction as much as I've studied some of the other big culture heroes and none of this is cited so i don't wan#to talk about stuff I don't know 100%#Anyway justice for Zeus fr#Gimme something give me literally anything other than the nonsense we usually get for him#This goes for Hera too btw#Both the king and queen of the skies are done TERRIBLY by wider greek myth audiences and it's genuinely disheartening to see#If y'all could make excuses for Achilles to forgive his flaws y'all can do it for them#They have a lot more to sympathise with I'll tell you that#(that is a completely biased statement; you are completely free and encouraged to enjoy whichever figures spark joy)#zeus

tbh, one of the things I can't wait to be over with this campaign is the idea that any real person's engagement with feminism is somehow tethered to whether or not/how much they like imogen and laudna (and additionally, having the concept of lesbophobia attached to whether you enjoy the ship between them). i feel like every single time there's been a word of criticism about their behavior or development, it's immediately been met with a cry (in certain circles) that anyone being critical isn't feminist and doesn't support sapphic relationships, which has been a WILD experience on my end as a stan blog for a female character who has notable sapphic ships. but none of that has mattered in the wake of these two SPECIFIC characters. like they're the linchpins of feminism and all sapphics around the world, and to dislike or even just be mildly critical of them proves you have disavowed your rights to be a feminist. or queer yourself. if i am eager for ANYTHING to be over, it is that
#like i'm sorry it's known i dont fuck with their ship#but i have come out of this as strongly disliking laudn/a which. IS ALLOWED#you can't revoke my feminist card (that you do NOT have access to anyway)#because i don't fuck with your personal blorbo!#one of these people one time left a comment of a fic of mine in a different fandom that was sapphic and i laughed so hard about it#like. if only you knew whomst i was and the accusations i had received. lol. lmao even#and this is simply a parable against assuming things like one's status regarding feminism and sapphic fiction when you DON'T KNOW THEM#the most extreme response is rarely if ever the one you should just automatically jump to#perhaps i simply don't like a character or ship because of something to do with the character or ship#and there is NO reason to apply an -ism or a -phobia to make me into a bad guy for simply not liking what you like#anyway#i HOPE this goes away after the campaign ends at least#cr tag

Mihawk, King and Cavendish all definitely shop at the same bespoke members only warehouse that only specially invited people can find (we know this because shanks is forever trying to find this warehouse so he can get gifts for Mihawk that he will actually wear but shanks’ fashion is so atrocious he can never find it)
And I refuse to hear otherwise. I don’t make the rules 🤷🏿♀️
#Mihawk would probably be Cavendish’s fashion icon if he admitted to that kind of thinkmg#just a Pinterest board filled with Mihawk’s best fits in blue#they all have the same fucking blouse I can’t#throwing thoughts to the void#they are just the only place that sells that much leather so that’s why King goes there#one piece#I love the idea that there’s just one extremely hard to find warehouse shop that sells all their fancy shit#because god forbid Mihawk go to a regular fucking tailor#dracule mihawk#op#hawkeye mihawk#Mishanks#cavendish one piece#king the wildfire#alber one piece#akagami no shanks#shanks#akataka#cavendish of the white horse#one piece shitpost#one piece funny

I was thinking back to the post I made about ebooks being so much more accessible for so many people compared to paperbacks/hardbacks and the other thing I wanted to add is the vast, vast majority of the time, the author gets so much more profit comparatively for an ebook than a paperback/hardback.
That's not a problem for huge huge huge authors either way, but for small-time authors, or authors with small publishing houses, the difference in profits can sometimes be $2.00 or $3.00 per ebook sold vs. $0.50c or $1.00 per paperback. Really. You pay more, but the author gets a lot less.
In the case of indie authors like myself, ebooks give the highest returns always.
This isn't necessarily something most readers think about, but I have had readers assume that because the book format cost them more, that automatically means more goes to the author. In fact it's often the opposite. There are very few exceptions (university texts come to mind). But in the case of your run-of-the-mill indie fiction, if you genuinely want the most profit to go to the author, get the ebook.
#asks and answers#ebooks more than any other format - audio / paperback / hardback#almost always return profits the fastest#it's hard to explain#but yeah that's how it goes#there are exceptions just like#there are exceptions to everything#also the most expensive format for any author is audio#this is why so many indie authors are straight up using Gen-AI to produce audiobooks#a novel costs around $4000-6000 USD to record in audio#and most indie novels only ever make $1000 over their lifetime if that#for many authors they are either vanity projects#or they thought they'd earn out the loss and then realise just how broke they are#for all that accessibility is extremely important#audiobooks and the cost have killed indie careers#keep it in mind before asking an author to create an audiobook#that's only ever going to sell about 50 copies sdlakfjdas

I stumbled my way through some pseudo-milestone social and personal stuff today and you know what? it was incredibly nice and a good experience and I'm proud of myself, actually. needless to say my nervous system in the immediate aftermath is also humming at at a pitch that could break glass and kill dolphins, and I feel faintly like three day old sunkissed roadkill, but sometimes you just have to tank that shit because that seems to happen whether what's going on is good or bad lmao
#my brain goes 'never met a stimuli that didn't make me long to return to the form of a jellyfish' no matter what#it just needs some time to process. and is extremely dramatic about it every time lol. getting a failing grade in being conscious#something that is possible to achieve and normal to dread if you just work hard and believe in yourself etc.#a reader may perhaps extrapolate some things from the ease and instinctiveness with which I understand lucanis dellamorte#and his problems with feelings of confusion fear overwhelm or ambivalence#even towards positive things happening in his life lmao#you know. it's a hell of a thing to be born with this nervous system but I guess someone had to be so let's make the best of it I guess#I think it did help a bit that I forgot to be nervous on the bus there because I got caught in an amazing drama-chasing wikiwalk#through the personal lives of the norwegian artistic elite of the 1800s. bjørnstjerne bjørnson was one of The messiest people#who have ever lived or written poems god bless. and his daughter bergljiot was one of the most hard core#(she held her father at gunpoint with his own weapon and threatened to shoot him if he didn't stop cheating on their mum#like he'd promised so many times. worrying behaviour. undeniably kind of badass. life before no fault divorce was Bad actually)#it felt like every new name I clicked to follow the trail of hot goss had me gasping like 'nO! no TELL me he didn't... but of course#of course he did *morbid glee*'#lots of people dying dramatically of tuberculosis at 23 and that kind of stuff peppered in too it was delicious#also for possibly the first time I had the instinct to reach out to someone to help me process after and it really did help to do it#which again. as small steps go. it does not a moon landing make but it remains a step taken#now I intend to play ds3 and let my brain stay on an elevator music channel until it's ready to actually be of use again#I may be a while

very unpopular trigun fandom opinion but. i really Don’t like when people write/draw wolfwood as being genuinely religious. like wearing rosary and praying every night and saying grace before eating and shit. HE SHOOTS PEOPLE AND KILLS THEM and smokes and drinks and curses and wears his collar as wide open as possible and is a Literal Hitman who was kidnapped by a religious cult as a child. do you guys sincerely believe he’s a good christian boy or something

#like he has an Extremely complicated relationship with religion#we do see him turn to god multiple times in trimax so i think he does believe in god to an extent#and of course the official cross choker art#but. that’s pretty much as far as his faith goes. and i feel like. idk the Point of his character is a walking contradiction#he’s a ‘priest’ but he wears his collar open to show off his chest and yknow Literally Kills People#and it’s hard to imagine he would think of religion as anything but both a mental and literal physical burden on him#but he also does manage to find his own kind of ‘religion’ in both vash and the orphanage. similar to how vash doesn’t believe in god but#more so in humans and their ability to do good. well anyway#talking#trigun#trimax#(disclaimer i have not watched tri98 so i’m saying all this in terms of trimax characterization)

the smell of blood on concrete [8/15]
Arcane, Vampire/Werewolf AU, Caitlyn/Vi
Summary: Werewolf Vi fights in the pits to finance finding her sister and vampire heiress Caitlyn wants to be the one holding the end of the leash.
Chapter Word Count: 7,271
Preview:
Further down the road, she passes by the farm stand, busy this time of year. Vi remembers the first girl she had a crush on working there, before she had a name for the feeling. The girl was older, tall with strong hands and an easy smile that had made Vi’s heart flutter in her chest. She wore her hair shaved on just one side, the rest of it in her face.
Vi’s hands flex on the wheel, thinking about all the other scars she’s never bothered to trace, the way these little roads have mapped themselves inside her brain.
ao3 link.
#caitvi#piltover's finest#i'm extremely proud of this one#vi finally goes home this chapter :)#my fic#and yeah sorry posting early again#today is ... challenging. at work.#but i fear tomorrow is going to be NONSTOP.#and it's so hard for me not to think the whole time ''i want to stop and post my fic.''#so i took a moment for myself this morning and did another polish pass.#(before getting on an hour long call about creative for work.)#arcane
