(Now I just need to worry about exams, papers, and whether or not my letters of recommendation and one of my transcripts will get to some of the schools on time)

7 years ago I was studying abroad in Canada. When I came back home, I decided to get a bachelor's degree in psychology and then pursue a master's degree in Canada. I spent 5 years in college working my ass off, graduated with GPA of 9.4, an article and a book chapter published, and a great resumé. Somewhere along this path I got cold feet, and put the master's plan on hold.

5 years ago I met the love of my life (who is now my husband). He helped me find the courage I had lost on my way here. I have applied to 9 graduate programs across Canada, and haven't heard back from any universities yet. The wait is killing me.

My past self would be proud. I still do not believe I will get accepted, but at least I tried. Right?

That being said, I did have friends who decided against applying for external funding because it would be an added stress to their application process. This is so valid.

This goes back to the tip of providing tangible examples of exactly what you did to deserve this praise. I think that cringe our social way of making sure no one toots their own horn too hard. If you’ve done the things you’ve said you’ve done, don’t be shy to say that you did, or to frame it in a positive light.

If they respond negatively, it might be an indicator of how they might respond if barriers arise in your graduate degree (e.g, pandemic restrictions). It sucks to be rejected or treated poorly, but better before than during your degree.

*Aside: If you’re in this spot where your finances are the main barrier to applying, I would encourage you to reach out to the profs in a networking sense, just to get your name familiar to them. You don’t have to go into detail about financial issues, or mention them at all, but if you do, their reaction, as well as how they talk about research and other barriers, can be factored into whether you two will be a good fit. Because your choice in this matters too.

Introducing Conversations in Fandom: A Byler Fandom Journal

In my last semester of undergrad, I worked on my school's literary journal. It was a lot of fun working in a group on the project and seeing all of the cool work that went into it, so I wanted to create something like that for the byler fandom.

What I aim to create with this project is a collection of well made fanart, fanfiction, analyses, theories, critiques and other fan creations that showcase unique ideas and promote healthy debate and conversation that pushes the boundaries of fandom work.

With a team of people, these works will be put together in an online journal, creating one piece of art that displays many different fandom voices together.

Below, I have used some of my own work to create an example of what this might look like (click images for better quality):

It’s about choosing the pet peeve that you would best be able to tolerate rather than choosing the prof with the best CV. It’s the pet peeves that students burn out on regardless of how amazing a mentor is otherwise.
