Previous part, next part
When Jay got home that night, he went straight to the bedroom, without noticing your absence at once; he was really tired after the intense day at work and after the night he spent with Hailey. He was feeling guilty about it, obviously, but he couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth, he just couldn’t tell his future wife that he completely messed up with everything. He loved her, he really loved y/n and he didn’t want to lose her, even if she would have had all the rights to do it, after all he cheated on her, just few months before the wedding.
Jay was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t realise that she wasn’t still at home; he removed the badge and the gun from his belt, placing them silently on the bedside table, then he looked around and he finally noticed that you weren’t sleeping in the bed. He frowned, looking around and trying to understand where you were; he couldn’t hear the noise of the shower and the bathroom’s door was open, so you couldn’t be there either. He searched the entire home, then he took his phone out and he messaged you, hoping that you still were with Kim outside.
He tried to not get worried, but he couldn’t help himself when he saw that the message hadn't been sent successfully; he stayed awake for another hour, before falling asleep on the couch, waiting for your return.
He woke up the next day, feeling pain all over his body because of the position he fell asleep with; he looked around and he got up, searching all the house to find you. The bed was still done, and it didn’t seem like someone slept in it the other night, so it was clear that you didn’t come back home.
He felt his heart skipping a beat because of his worry.
Why didn’t she come back home?
Had something happened last night?
Was she in danger?
He grabbed his phone and called for Kim straight away, walking all around the house while waiting for her to respond. He knew that it was still early in the morning, and he didn’t want to wake her up, but he had no choice. Y/n could have been in danger, something could have happened to her while she was coming back home, and he needed to know at what time Kim and her left the bar.
“Jay, it’s six in the morning, what’s happening?” Kim whispered when she answered the phone, seeing Jay’s name on the screen.
“Is y/n with you? Did something strange happened yesterday? Did she leave the bar after a call from the hospital?” Jay questioned her without taking a single breath. He just wanted to know if you were okay, if you were with her, maybe after drinking too many beers. He couldn’t understand for what reason you didn’t come home last night and he couldn’t believe that something bad happened to you or he would have known by that moment, his brother Will would have advised you.
“What? No, she left around ten pm and she walked away saying that she needed to do something… why? Did something happen?” Kim got up from her bed immediately, especially after hearing his tone of voice and hearing how worried he seemed to be.
“Fuck.” He exclaimed, shaking his head, still walking all around the house; he grabbed his badge and his gun, then he left the apartment without even reaching for his jacket. It wasn’t cold outside, but you definitely needed to have a jacket with you all the time in Chicago, at least till the begin of the summer. “She didn’t come back home last night and she doesn’t respond to my messages or my calls. I’m going to call Mouse and to make him track her phone, after that I’ll call Voight if I notice something strange, okay?”
“Shit…” Kim whispered, worried. “Tell me if you find out something, okay? “
“Sure.” Jay reassured her, then he hung up and he called Mouse instead.
He waited for almost a minute before his friend answered the phone, still in his dreams; Jay could tell just by his voice that he woke up Mouse and that he wasn’t really happy about that, but he just couldn’t wait any longer, especially if something bad happened to you.
How could he have been so stupid?
You were never late, he should have called Mouse and Kim the night before, he should have called them before to make sure that you were okay. What if someone kidnapped you? What if someone hurt you?
It would have been his fault.
It would have been his fault because you went out with Kim alone because he wanted to spend the evening with Hailey, he would have been his fault because he should have called for help immediately, he would have been his fault because he wasn’t by your side.
“Mouse, I need you to track y/n’s phone right now!” Jay said without waiting a minute.
“What do you guys have with tracking each other’s phones, uh?” Mouse replied, mumbling something about last night, when you called him.
Jay froze at his friend’s words; he pulled up and he parked the car before crashing into someone else, then he took a deep breath and he tried to stay focused on Mouse.
“Wait… what does that mean?” He whispered, afraid of what he could have discovered.
“She asked me to track your phone yesterday’s night… she seemed worried about you falling again into ptsd and I immediately tracked your phone. I told her that you were in your older apartment and that’s it, I didn’t hear from her after that.”
In that moment, all the dots connected.
That’s why Kim said you left earlier, that’s why he noticed the backup- key in the wrong position, that’s why she didn’t come back home and that’s why she didn’t respond to his messages or calls.
She knew.
She found out.
He messed up and she knew it.
Jay stayed silent for what looks like hours, even days for him, even if it was probably for just one minute or two. He was so lost in his thoughts that he didn’t notice he was crying, not until he was brought back to reality from Mouse.
“Uhm… Jay, there’s a problem…” he whispered. “I can’t track y/n’s phone, it’s like it’s dead. Maybe she didn’t have the chance to charge it? But why did you need her location? Isn’t she with you?”
Jay gulped, looking outside of the car, looking at everything and nothing at the same time. he was like a ghost, he felt like a ghost, he felt like he was dead, like he lost all.
And he did.
If she really saw him with Hailey, he knew that he lost the love of his life, and all for what? Some sex with his partner at work? He said he loved Hailey, he always said it when they fucked, but while doing it he always thought about y/n, about the love of his life. It didn’t make sense, it didn’t make sense for him either and he didn’t expect the others to understand, that’s why he never told you or anyone else, even if he really wanted to after the first time he and Hailey had sex together.
“Jay?” Mouse asked again, worried when he didn’t hear anything from his friend for minutes. “Are you okay?”
“I ruined everything, Mouse.” He whispered at the phone, crying silently. “I lost her… I think she broke up with me… I think she left…”
“What?! What does that mean? She couldn’t have done it, couldn’t she? Why?” Mouse didn’t really understand what was happening between his friend and his friend’s fiancé, but it was clear that something bad happened between them since he heard Jay crying on the other line of the call.
“I cheated on her… I cheated on her and I think she found out… she didn’t come home last night, she doesn’t respond to messages and calls… I don’t know where to find her, I don’t know where to find her to talk to her and explain everything to her. She had all the rights to know the truth from me, but I can’t do it if I can’t reach for her.”
Mouse stayed silent for some minutes, then he had an idea.
“She works at the hospital, maybe she’s there, no? It’s seven am and she had to present her resignation letter if she really wants to leave Chicago, no? Maybe she’s at the hospital to do it, maybe you still have time.”
It was one last hope and Jay accepted it; Jay took it immediately.
“I’ll call you from the hospital. Thank you, Mouse.”
He hung up, dried his cheeks from the tears and he drove towards the Chicago Medical Center as soon as he could; when he arrived, he met his brother, Will, but he was too focused on finding y/n, so he ignored him and went straight towards Meggie. Before he could ask her where his fiancé was, Jay got stopped by Will, who pushed him into an empty room.
“Will I don’t have time for this right now!” Jay exclaimed, trying to get out of the room to find you.
“Well, you’ll have to find some time because I want to know why y/n presented her resignation form on a fucking mail!”
And that was when Jay lost his last hope.
“W-What?” he whispered, sitting on an empty chair before falling on the ground. “She left?”
It was too late.
He arrived too late.
Will nodded, placing a hand on his shoulder, and trying to reassure him in any way possible.
“What happened, Jay?”
“I fucked up… I fucked up and I lost her, Will.” He whispered. “I lost her.”
And it was true.
He lost you.
And the best part was that being a detective’s fiancé helped you to find a way to be invisible.
New phone.
Only cash.
Being a ghost.
You didn’t want to be found, especially not by him and, while he was crying on his brother’s shoulder about losing the love of his life, you were landing in New York city, trying to find a way to hang on, trying to start a new life.
A life away from him.
Away from the last version of you.

Hi! Unsure if you would do this as it isnt on the list which is totally okay if not but would you be able to do a Greg (Mouse) and Jay fic? maybe about Jay being scared mouse relapsed and driving to find him?
born to be a soldier
Hey! You're in luck as while it's not on my list, I do love Mouse and will only write Jay when it's with Mouse or Al. So here you go. I hope you enjoy it :)
As much as he hated it, Jay couldn't say he was really surprised when Mouse told him he was enlisting back in the military.
It was something Jay had seen for a while, even if he didn't want to face it until he was forced to.
And while he knew Erin was right, that he needed to support Greg's decision because it was going to happen if he liked it or not, he just couldn't.
Something felt wrong here, even if it was a choice that made sense for Mouse.
Mouse had always been one of those people that hadn't seen any other path for their life, other than the military. He enlisted at eighteen and he and Jay both knew he planned to die fighting for the country.
A medical discharge hadn't been in either of their cards and while Jay had found the police academy and was satisfied with how his life had started to shape up, Mouse had spent the time between coping with drugs until he got clean two years before.
Mouse had a job now, something that should've been enough. But Jay couldn't pretend it was anymore, not when Mouse was about to leave and throw himself back into a war that would do nothing but leave Jay with more broken pieces of his friend.
He sighed, setting the beer he'd been drinking down and standing up. He paced the living room like it would give him the answers he needed, his phone in one hand in case Mouse called.
But he wouldn't. Jay knew he wouldn't.
Eventually he gave up, setting his phone down and heading into he and Erin's bedroom. Erin was out with Burgess for the night, so Jay was left to his own thoughts.
The only thing that caused Jay not to dream about all the nights after they first came home, the ones where he'd find Mouse passed out and thought he lost him, was the knowledge that at least right now, Mouse was safe in Chicago.
—
Talking to Mouse never happened. At least not the way Jay had been planning to.
Mouse came late to work, late enough Jay almost called him. When he finally arrived he headed straight to the break room, slamming his hand against the counter hard enough that Voight came out of his office.
Jay silently followed him, shutting the break room door before Voight could say anything. He didn't get another word out before Mouse turned around.
“You'll be happy now.”
“Happy about what?” Jay asked.
Mouse huffed. “That spot for a tech analyst I'd been offered? They found somebody else to fill it.”
Jay took a deep breath, leaning against the wall. “Well you can still enlist. There's no shortage of wars.”
“What, now you want me to enlist? Last week you were pretty against the idea.”
“It's your decision, Greg.”
Mouse scoffed. “Now it's my decision is it? You know, Jay, if you hadn't been so against it then I would've accepted before they filled it. But unfortunately I care about your opinion of me, and waited.”
Jay didn't get another word in before Mouse rolled his eyes and shoved past him, and out to his desk. Jay took another deep breath, heading to his own desk. This wasn't the time or place to continue getting into this.
But as he watched Mouse throughout the day, his worry only grew.
Mouse was more agitated than Jay had seen him in a while. Not since he was using. Or needed a fix.
Jay knew they had to talk later. Properly.
—
Mouse left before he did. Jay watched him leave, then glared at the half finished report on his desk.
He knew Voight wouldn't let him leave until he was done. Not after the scene Mouse had made earlier.
Like Antonio was responsible for keeping Jay in line because he vouched for him, and Al was responsible for Ruzek because he brought him in, Jay was responsible for Mouse in that sense. To keep him in line. So both of them were on thin ice after earlier.
So Jay finished the report as quickly as he could, handing it to Voight and leaving before his sergeant could stop him.
He knew Mouse wasn't home. He was too angry when he left, too agitated and needing a fix.
Which left two options. Either Mouse did relapse and went to score something to take the edge off, or he went to the lake. The place Mouse always went to when he needed a quiet place to think.
As Jay headed the way to the lake, he hoped for both their sakes that was where Mouse went.
Thankfully he spotted Mouse’s car and said man on the dock. Jay parked his car, quietly walking over there and sitting down next to Mouse.
Mouse hadn't turned around, but Jay knew he knew he was there.
“I didn't relapse if that's what you're going to ask,” Mouse said, his tone bitter.
“I wasn't going to ask that,” Jay replied.
They both knew it wasn't true.
It was silent for a couple minutes as they say side by side. But it wasn't tense. Not like it had been in the bullpen at least.
It was Mouse who eventually broke the silence.
“I'm still going to enlist.”
“I know.”
Mouse finally turned to look at him. “I'm glad you found this, your team, the job, but it isn't for me. I was born to be a soldier, Jay. And I'm okay to go out as one.”
“I know,” Jay repeated. Because he did. Even if it scared him.
Mouse nodded, staring back out at the lake.
Jay shifted, turning back to face his friend. “Greg?”
“Yeah?”
“If you ever change your mind and decide to come back again, you'll always have a place with me. Alright, brother?”
“Alright.”
They sat there until the sun went down, soaking in one more night before everything would change again.

to the power of three chapter 1/3
Summary: Three days in the lives of Jay and his partners during the first year spent in their house.
Warnings: brief mention of sex in the abstract (nothing on page or actually implied to happen)
Words: 3,766 (so far)
Cozy Trio (MouseUpstead), domestic birthday fluff, polyamorous Jay Halstead
Sneak Peek:
Mouse absently switched between apps on his phone, from the same game he’d been trying to beat for the last hour, to his email, and back again. The couch was barely comfortable anymore, the cushions lumpy and his back resting against the arm of it in just the wrong way, but getting up and going to his room would involve more effort than he wanted to put in. Besides, it wasn’t like he could do much to move, anyway.
He didn’t look up from the level he was trying to beat for the millionth time, and he didn’t have to. There was only one other person in the house who could possibly be getting in his space, splaying out over the space he left on the cushions and resting their head on his stomach. Even if there was a mystery to solve, his investigation wouldn’t have lasted long. Only one person in their house had that much hair.
“Not now, Hailey, I’m popping bubbles.”

Came up with what I thought would be just a short little mouse fic but my tired mind wasn't going to let me write anything that coherent so I wrote a summary.... 400 words worth of summary for a piece I thought might total about 500/1000 words at most. So turns out it's going to be a lot longer than originally planned whenever I have enough energy to actually write it

Us Again-Part 1
Tumblr media
Greg “Mouse” Gerwitz x Reader (nicknamed Tink)
With 6 months to go before he’s home for good Mouse never expected that call even knowing it was a possibility. You were hurt, bad but alive. The complications aren’t apparent until you wake up
Warnings: Mention of a wreck, injuries received from the wreck
“So, how much longer you got Gerwitz?” Ronalds asked Mouse as the two of them walked through camp. Mouse grinned “Six months and I’m out for good” Ronalds nodded “Eager to get home to that pretty wife of yours?” Mouse raised an eyebrow “Tread carefully there man, fine line talking about her”
Ronalds laughed and slapped his shoulder “Easy man, not saying anything bad. I just see the difference in you after you talk to her and when you came back from that last leave I knew that was it. You’re ready to be home with her full time” Mouse nodded “I am, I regret having signed the six years now but for some reason that woman has stuck with me. It’s been hell.”
Being married to a detective that was in the top unit in Chicago while he was halfway around the world in active service was definitely not the easiest thing anyone could do but the two of you had made it work. When he’d first brought up reenlisting the two of you had been together for over a year, knocking on the door of two. He’d seen the terror in your eyes but you supported it.
The day the two of you got married it was a small ceremony with the unit, a few from fifty one and med and your brother. He’d never been happier than that day. The first two years he’d been back in the army they’d kept him close to home but the last four he’d been gone a lot more but the two of you made it work.
Phone calls, emails, facetime calls and he came home every time he got offered a leave to see you for however long he could.  The last time he’d made it stateside on leave you and he had discussed things and he’d decided to ride out his final contract and get out. He wanted to be home full time with you. He had quite a few offers on the job front so that was no longer an issue.
“I’m sure she’s ready to have you home too” Ronalds told him. Officer Abson’s voice grabbed both of their attention. “Yes sir?” his eyes landed on Mouse “Gerwitz, you need to come with me” Ronalds looked at him and shrugged. Wasn’t like either of them could argue with their C.O.
Mouse fell in step with Abson “What is this about sir?” Abson led him to one of the meeting halls. When they stepped in Chaplain Monroe was inside and Mouse had to force his feet to move, had to remind himself to stay standing, force air into his lungs. “Chaplain” he greeted and Monroe motioned to a chair “Maybe you should have a seat”
Mouse shook his head, crossing his arms over his chest “I’d rather stand” Everyone knew your job, knew there was just as big of a risk as one day having to deliver a death notice to him as there was a death notice to you but fuck he was down to six months. He would be home in six months. If something happened to you this close to the end? He’d never forgive himself.
“Is she dead?” he asked, swallowing down the lump of emotions in his throat threatening to spill over at the mere thought that he’d lost you. “She isn’t dead son” Officer Abson assured him. He nodded slowly as Chaplain Monroe explained “Jay Halstead, your secondary point of contact and a Sergeant Hank Voight went through the channels needed to contact us. Your wife was injured in the line of duty. She’s currently hospitalized in Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. This warrants a leave of compassion. We’ll get you on the next plane headed out”
He nodded slowly, trying to force more air into his lungs. Severely injured. What the hell did that even mean? You had a living will, they couldn’t keep you on life support over seventy two hours if it was needed. They only had a certain amount of time to bring you back if your heart stopped. He knew all of this, it made sense but right now the only thoughts going through his head was what if you were gone by the time he got there?
“You can use the phone in my office to call home” Officer Abson offered and he nodded numbly “Thank you sir” Chaplain Monroe offered a small smile “I’ll be praying for your wife son” Mouse wanted to ask him where was god when you got hurt but knew you’d smack him behind the head for being snarky towards compassion so instead he nodded “Thank you” and turned to walk out.
Tumblr media
Jay paced the floor outside of your room. He was waiting on the phone call but when the number flashed across his screen he still nearly threw the damned phone. “Hello” he answered and heard Mouse take a shuddered breath “Is she alive Jay? They told me they’re gonna get me on the next plane out but is Tink still going to be there when I get home?”
Jay ran a hand down his face, trying to keep his voice steady, despite the tremor in his hands. “Her vitals are stable. Will and Connor both said it looks promising” “Promising? What the hell does that mean Jay? What happened?” “There was a wreck, she was on a case…the suspect hit her…her car flipped a few times” Jay swallowed hard, remembering the shape you were in when they found you.
“What are they doing Jay?” Mouse asked and Jay sighed “They’re doing scans Greg, a lot of scans.” “Ok, I’ll be home as soon as I can. Please don’t leave her, please” “I won’t, you have my word” Jay told Mouse goodbye and hung up. He stared at the phone for a moment and let out a slow breath.
How the hell was he supposed to handle this? You were fighting for your life. You were his best friend’s wife, his wife’s best friend and one of his closest friends. All because some asshole decided he wouldn’t face the fact that he’d been trafficking girls and god knows you’d never back down from anything.
He heard footsteps and looked up to Voight walking up to him “That Mouse?” he nodded “They’re um they’re getting him on a plane” he nodded “That’s good, that’s real good” “Hank, what do we do if she dies before he gets here?” he asked and Voight shook his head “Don’t Jay..she’s strong, she can beat this”
“I hope you’re right,” Jay muttered, staring at the door leading to your room. Hailey hadn’t left from next to your bed since they’d gotten you to a room.
Tumblr media
When you woke up, everything hurt. Your left arm was in a cast, your head felt fuzzy and there was a pretty blonde woman who looked really upset next to your bed. She was wearing jeans,a dark green shirt with a badge at her waist. “Are you ok?” you asked in a small voice and when she lifted her head the light caught her blue eyes, a smile slipping onto her face “You’re awake” you nodded slowly “Yeah?”
“I’ll get Will” she offered so you nodded again “Ok, who’s Will?” she laughed “Tink, not funny” you raised an eyebrow “Who’s Tink?” her smile quickly dropped “Y/N…please stop teasing me”
“I’m not teasing you…I don’t know the name Will or the name Y/N or Tink” you whispered and her eyes widened “Oh god. Do you know me?” you shook your head and saw tears spring to her eyes so you quickly said “I’m sorry!” and she reached a hand tentatively out “It’s ok sweetie, it’s ok. I’m going to go get Jay and Will. We’ll figure this out” “Ok” you replied as she started to stand but you stopped her by pulling her hand back. She looked at your face and you smiled slightly “What’s your name?” “Hailey” she replied, tears sliding down her cheeks so you asked quietly “Hailey? Why am I in a hospital?”
“You got hurt, Will is one of your doctors he’ll explain more. Jay is my husband and one of your friends” “Wow, ok” you could feel tears spring to your own eyes, the terror of your situation setting in because if what she was saying was right? What the hell was going on?  “I’m kind of really scared Hailey” you admitted and her hand curled around yours “It’s gonna be ok Tink. I won’t leave you if you don’t want me to” “Please don’t” you begged and she sat back down “In that case, I’ll hit the page button and we’ll go from there”
____________________
After Hailey hit the page button a redheaded man in scrubs and a brunette man wearing jeans a dark Henley and a badge at his side came walking in. “Look who’s awake” the redhead said and Hailey shook her head “She doesn’t know us or her own name Will” ok, redhead is Will.
“What?” the brunette asked and Hailey nodded then reached for his hand and pulled him closer before turning to you “Tink, this is Jay. He’s my husband. You and him have been friends for a really long time. Will here is his brother actually” by then you were in a full blown panic, tears pouring down your face “Why don’t I remember any of you? Why don’t I remember my own damn name?”
Will touched your hand and your eyes flew to him “Y/N, you need to calm down. I know it’s hard but your body has been through hell. I'll go ahead and order more scans and see what's going on. In the meantime we’ll take it slow, ok?” you nodded “Ok”
Jay looked damn near as panicked as you felt. Him and Hailey whispered something to each other before Jay turned his attention to you. He approached the bed slowly before sitting on the edge of it. He reached for your hand but stopped halfway, looking at you. You nodded because you felt safe with Hailey. You didn’t know her but she felt safe. He gently took your right hand in his “Y/N Gerwitz is your name but everyone calls you Tink. A man that was in our unit Alvin Olinsky started calling you that because he said you were sweet, short and sassy and always fluttering around fixing stuff. Tink like Tinkerbelle. Anymore you go by it more than your name”
“Ok, thank you” you whispered and he smiled “Of course sweetheart” you took a deep breath “Unit?” he nodded “You’re a detective, same as me and Hailey” “How did I get hurt?” “There was a case, the perp hit you. You were in a wreck”
You nodded then looked at Will, “Tests? Can Hailey go with me? If she will?” “Of course I will” she threw in and Will nodded “Of course” Hailey gave you a small smile. “I’m going to step out and talk to Jay then I’ll be right back” “Ok” you watched her walk out then looked at Will “What’s going on?” you knew tears were streaming down your face and he must know you because doctors didn’t look that distressed at patients being upset.
He grabbed the tissues from next to the bed and helped you to gently wipe your eyes. “I don’t quite know right now but we will figure it out. I promise you”

Hailey stepped into the hallway behind Jay and only then did she let herself crumble. She fell into his arms, sobs wracking her body. “Jay she doesn’t remember anything” he rubbed his hands down her back soothingly “I know baby, I know.. Connor and Will are gonna figure it out”
She pulled back and looked up at him, seeing tears in his eyes too “What if they can’t? What if she never remembers us?” then her eyes got big “Oh god, Mouse” he nodded “I’ll handle it, I’ll prepare him the best I can when I pick him up and I’ll talk to everyone else too. You just be with her. She wants you at her side right now so that must mean something good right?”
“Or because I was there when she woke up?” Hailey offered and he shrugged “Either way. You just be with her, I’ll go talk to the team and update them. Then I’ll check when Mouse’s flight lands”  “Ok, I love you” Hailey whispered in a small voice. Jay pressed a kiss to her lips “I love you too, she’s still here. We gotta remember that. The rest we can handle”
Tumblr media
The longest flight of Mouse’s life was the one back to Chicago. Every moment that passed felt too long. What if something happened to you while he was in the air? What if Jay had to wait until he landed? What if he lost you?
He met you years ago, when Jay first pulled him into the twenty first for the tech position. He could remember the first time he saw you like it was yesterday. “So, you were in the rangers with Jay?” Adam asked and Mouse smirked at him “Yeah, I could tell you some stories about this guy” Jay laughed “Yeah but ya wont”
Mouse heard a voice coming from the back hallway “Halstead! I need you to roll with me on our C.I.” then you walked around the corner and froze when you spotted him, a grin slipping onto your face “Who’s he? Kinda cute” Jay shook his head and did the introductions between the two of you.
You crossed your arms, holding his eyes “So should I call ya Mouse or Greg?” without thinking he blurted out “You can call me whatever you want. I’ll answer to it” and the smile you gave him? Yeah you owned him then and there.
You were amazing. Tink, the sassy and sweet detective that was always fluttering around helping to fix stuff. You never got annoyed with him, even when Jay did. You brought him into conversations and invited him out. You went out of your way to spend time with him. When he started back going to the gym with Jay, the first time he actually caught you checking him out for a change? Yeah he may have blushed.
When he asked you out, it was after a case. He’d been so damn nervous he stuttered. He figured that was that, you’d never want to date a man that couldn’t ask you out without stuttering. No, you instead stepped into him and pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth and told him “I’d love to Greg”
Falling in love with you was as easy as breathing. You were everything to him. The day you told him you loved him the first time was such a simple moment but ingrained into his memory.
He was in the tech room fixing your radio that had gotten smashed in a takedown a few days before when you came walking into the room behind him. “Greg, did you save it?” he turned to face you and grinned at you “Do I get a kiss for working miracles?” and held up the now fixed radio. You damn near jumped into his arms because you and Jay had a habit of breaking radios to the point it even annoyed Voight. “Thank you! You’re amazing Greg Gerwitz” and pulled him into a kiss. He laughed “Anything for you” you pulled away and took the radio from him with a smile “I love you, you know that right? I hope you know that. If not, now you do” He was speechless for a good twenty seconds before a grin slipped onto his face “You love me?” you nodded and he pulled you back into his arms “I love you too Tink” and pressed a kiss to your lips.
“LANDING IN O’HARE” the voice came over the loudspeaker and he broke himself out of his thoughts. He quickly stood and headed off the plane.
______________________
Mouse darted through the people around him and spotted Jay. “How is she?” he asked and Jay nodded “She’s awake” Mouse nearly hit his knees with relief “Thank god. Ok, let's go straight to med” ‘Greg, there’s something else” Jay added so he nodded “What?”
Tumblr media
“She doesn’t remember anything?” Mouse asked, looking from Will to Connor. Both of them shook their heads “It’s retrograde amnesia. The trauma from the wreck has blocked her memory. She didn’t even know her own name”
He let out a shuddered breath “Ok, does she know she’s married?” he looked between the two men then back at Jay who shook his head “I didn’t know how to tell her” “Ok, I’ll um fuck..can I see her?” he stammered and Will nodded “Of course, she’s your wife Mouse”
____________________
Jay walked in the room first, Mouse could hear him talking to Hailey. Then Mouse walked in. Hailey looked up and smiled “Hey” “Hey Hails” he greeted then his eyes landed on you. Your face was a roadmap of bruises. There were staples in your head, stitches on your cheek and that was just what he could see on your face. Your left arm was casted and you looked like you’d gone through hell.
You smiled slightly “Hey, who’s this?” and he felt his heart crumble. “Um Greg, Greg Gerwitz sweetheart” he told you and your smile got a little more at ease. “Greg…Gerwitz?…ok. Who are you to me?” He looked from Hailey to Jay and back. He didn’t know if he should tell you. It was a lot to spring a husband on someone.
_______________________
Jay had left a few hours before but Hailey stayed with you. She hadn’t left you far, from what she told you the two of you were really close. When Jay returned however there was another man with him.  He was really good looking, Jesus you couldn’t remember your own name and was checking out some guy but he was. Brown hair that was a little on the longer side but suited him, bright blue eyes and a little bit of scruff covering his jaw and you could see dog tags under his shirt. A soldier? What the hell was a soldier doing here?
“Hey, who’s this?” you asked Jay and saw the man’s face fall. God you were tired of hurting people and from what Will had told you, you’d only woke up the day before. “Um Greg, Greg Gerwitz sweetheart” he replied and you felt your shoulder loosen at his voice. Gerwitz? Jay told you your last name was Gerwitz. “Greg…Gerwitz..ok. Who are you to me?”
He looked from Hailey to Jay and back. Hailey leaned up after a moment and took your hand in hers “Tink, this is gonna be hard to hear ok?” you nodded slowly “Ok” She took a deep breath before saying “Sweetie, Greg is your husband”
Your eyes flew to him, feeling tears form in your eyes “Husband?” you asked in a small voice and he nodded slowly “Yeah, few years now” you swallowed hard “Oh god, I’m so sorry Greg” it was bad enough not being able to remember Hailey or Jay but what kind of wife couldn’t remember her husband?
“It's ok, baby you’re alive. Nothing else on earth matters” he assured you but you could see the pain in his eyes like the pain in Hailey’s. You tried to blink away the tears but the moment they started to fall Greg was across the room to your side, he almost slipped his arms around you but stopped. “It’s ok” you whispered and he pulled you into his arms.
You felt a sense of comfort there, like familiarity. You had cried before but it was like the dam broke when you got in his arms. Sobs wracked your body “I don’t remember anything, my life, my job, my friends, you” he rubbed small circles onto your back, trying to be careful of the multiple injuries you had “It’s gonna be ok, we’re gonna figure it out”
A hiccup of a sob escaped you as you looked at him closer then and he smiled “Hey” “Hey” you replied, feeling fresh tears “I’m sorry” “It’s not your fault. Quit apologizing” you touched his dog tags that had fallen loose of his shirt “So, I married a soldier?” he laughed lightly “Long story, we’ll get into it later”  “Ok” you rested your head back against his chest “Do I have any family? Like blood? I’ve only met friends”
You felt him swallow hard and heard his heart start beating faster “We lost your brother a few years back” you felt more tears spring to your eyes for someone you didn’t even remember. “I can’t even remember knowing him, let alone losing him. What the fuck is wrong with me?” he pulled back to look at you “Baby, Jay showed me the car. I’m just happy you’re alive”
You nodded slowly, looking around at Hailey and Jay. Hailey looked so sad, so did Jay. When you’d met more of your unit they’d all had the same reaction. Happy you were alive but that sadness underneath. “Greg, I’m tired” you whispered and he nodded “Of course sweetheart. We’ll let you rest but I’ll be here with you” “Ok” you whispered and watched them walk out.
What were you going to do if you never remembered them?
____________________
Mouse was the last out of the door. Jay turned to face him “How are you?” and he shook his head, swallowing hard “How would you be?” and Jay nodded “We’re here man for everything” “I know, I appreciate it”
“She’ll get it back” Jay spoke low and he wasn’t sure if he was trying to reassure Mouse, Hailey or himself but both of them whispered “I hope you’re right”

DONNA! Our poor Mousey boy 😭
Tumblr media
5 or more with Greg and 21)  Holding on through, every night
(I feed the angst monster 😂)
Tumblr media
It was at night it happened, always at night. It started with a pang in his chest, an itch underneath his skin. The restlessness built and it built and it built until he was pacing back and forth within the confines of the apartment, craving the silence and the europhia. It had gotten worse since you'd gone away. It was only a week, a conference in San Franisco but after three days he was practically climbing the walls looking for that fix.
Day five was when he had snapped. He thought he'd made it over the hurdle, that he has broken the back of it but it had been a bad day, a bad case and you weren't picking up the phone. So he'd scored.
He didnt do it in the apartment, he had enough respect for you not to bring it in into the home you shared. He'd stayed in a flop house instead, sprawled out on a mattress that smelt like piss and mildew, after day six he realised some of it was his own.
He intended to make it home for Day Seven but when he forgot that he lost time when he took a hit, that it rolled into one.
He saw the anguish in your eyes when you found him, the anger, the grief and in that moment he hated himself. However when you yanked the needle out of his hand before he could depress the plunger, he hated you more.

~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
Next part
You and Jay had been together for three years and everything looked good, at least it was ‘till the end of march. You didn’t know or understand why he changed his behavior when he was with you, especially since it all happened so quickly and unexpectedly that you just couldn’t understand what happened between you two. From one day, he just started to behave differently, coming home later and telling you that he was just too busy at work, doing some paperwork and getting his things ready for the next shift. He made it looked like he was just trying to impress Voight and for a moment you actually believed him.
You knew how much he wanted to become, one day, sergeant and to be on the lead of his own unit and you just wanted to support him in any ways you could; if he wanted to make a good impression in case of a new sergeant, you wouldn’t have stop him. Actually, it looked like Voight was having some issues lately, from how Jay talked about him after work anyway, and you really trusted him and believed him about his story.
Then, one evening, you decided to go talk with Kim, having some times together and trying to explain to her what you had in mind: Jay’s birthday was closer than you thought and you had to find a good gift for him.
“I need you to help me.” You said to Kim, smiling softly. “Jay’s birthday is in two weeks and i want to surprise him with a two-days holiday. I know that he spends a lot of time at the district doing his paperwork and trying to make a good impression in case of a promotion, but i really need your help. Can you please find a good reason to get him home earlier on Friday’s night?”
Kim was surprised by your statement, not because of the surprise you were preparing for him, but for what you said about him staying at the district till late.
“What do you mean that he spends a lot of time at the district to make a good impression? He always leaves before me, actually he arrives earlier to complete the paperwork he usually leaves at the end of the shift.”
You were confused, you were really confused. What did that mean? If he usually left the district early in the evening, why he came home every night after 11 pm, when you were already sleeping?
“Uhm… he usually doesn’t come home before 11 pm.” You whispered, looking at Kim while your mind raced through all the nights you waited for him to come back home, before falling asleep because of the tiredness of the day at work.
“Y/n, i swear to God that he usually leaves at 7 pm, 8 pm if we’re up to something ‘till late.” Kim said, looking sadly at you, while something you didn’t want to admit passed through her mind.
“But… it doesn’t make sense.” You replied, shaking your head slightly. “What does he do between 7 pm and 11 pm then?”
The girl just shook her head, looking at you sadly and placing her hand on yours, trying to reassure you in some ways. “Maybe it’s not something you have to worry about, maybe it’s just some stuff he had to do or, maybe, it’s just a bad moment for him. I remember he was like this when he suffered from PTSD.”
You nodded, but it didn’t make sense anyway. You remembered when Jay suffered from PTSD because you were always by his side, you were always there for him and you followed him step after step, trying to help him find his way out of it. It couldn’t be PTSD that time, you would have noticed immediately.
He wasn’t distressed like he was when he suffered from it, he was actually really happy and he was usually calm when he came back home.
It couldn’t be PTSD, but what was it then?”
“Sorry Kim, i have to go.” You whispered, looking at your phone and finding out it was just 9:30 pm; you had still plenty of time before he could have been home and you wanted to find out what was happening with your boyfriend, actually with your future husband.
“Don’t worry darling, it’s okay.” Kim whispered, smiling at you. “We’ll see each other soon, okay? Maybe you can come at the district one day and we can talk a little? Also Adam and Kevin missed you, you know. With all the preparations of the wedding, we didn’t see you around in a while.”
“Yeah, when i’m not at work at the hospital, i’m around the city trying some white dresses.” You sighed, wearing your jacket and placing some money on the table, paying for your own drink.
“I can imagine that. Don’t worry, really. I hope to see you again soon.” She smiled softly at you.
“I hope that too. Bye Kim, goodnight.”
You left the bar just ten minutes after and you immediately called the one and only that could have tracked Jay’s phone without a word: Mouse.
When he came back from the army, for the second time, you knew that it would have been difficult for him to start a new life again, especially after the first time. Jay helped him and, after some weeks in which he tried to convince him every single day, Mouse accepted to come back at the intelligence as a tech. It wasn’t an easy decision for him and it was strange at first, but he knew he had no better option and working with his friend was something he missed a lot.
He picked up the phone after the second ring.
“Hi! Look who showed up!” He smiled and laughed. “I was actually asking myself when you would have called me to give me the official invite to your wedding, you know? I would have asked Jay, but he i’m pretty sure is not as much involved in the preparations as you are, so…”
“Mouse, i need your favor.” You told him straight away. “I can’t find Jay and I’m worried. Can you please track his phone and tell where he is? And, can you do that without anyone knowing it?”
It was a strange request, especially since it went from you, but Mouse got it immediately and he started to track Jay’s phone straight away. He was actually scared for his friend, he was scared that Jay got into real trouble, maybe with the ptsd or something liked that, but there was no time for questions. He tracked his phone and he gave her the address after only three minutes.
“Thank you, Mouse. Sorry if i interrupted your evening. I have to go now and, don’t worry, I’ll handle the invite in person, okay?” You said, getting inside the car while looking at the address Mouse gave to you. It couldn’t be true, why was he there?
“Don’t worry, no problem at all. I’ll leave you now, i guess you’re busy… just, tell me if anything happened to him, okay?” He replied, making sure that everything was okay, making sure that you would have called him in case of trouble.
“I will, thanks Mouse.”
When he hung up, you started the car and you drove to the location he sent you; why the hell was Jay at his old apartment? Didn’t he sell it?
When you arrived at the location, you parked the car and you got out as soon as you could, going up the stairs and reaching his door just few minutes after. Fortunately, you still knew where he used to hide the key and you went for it, opening the door as silently as you could. The first thing you noticed when you entered was the emptiness of the room: there was nothing there other than some furnishings and still you didn’t understand why Jay was there.
Then, you noticed it.
Then, you noticed them: heels and they weren’t yours.
Your mouth became dry and you stopped breathing properly, trying to find an explanation for what you were seeing. You took some steps forward and your eyes fell on the jeans and t-shirts that were on the floor, all the way up to what it was Jay’s bedroom before he moved out. You took the hallway, starting to hear voices, moans you didn’t want to hear, moans you just wanted to be from your neighbors, even if you knew that they were elderly and it couldn’t have been them. Just at the front of the door, you saw them: panties and Jay’s boxer.
Your brain stopped working, you stopped breathing and your heart almost stopped beating; you just couldn’t understand what was happing, you couldn’t believed it.
You zoned out, like you couldn’t have been there, like you were just in a dream, a bad dream, a really bad one, then you came back to reality when you actually saw and hear them.
“Oh, Jay.” She moaned, begging him. “Please, faster.”
Hailey.
Jay’s partner.
“God, Hails…” Your boyfriend moaned, lowering himself on her to kiss her breast while fucking her. “I… shit… you feel so good around me.”
“Oh, J-Jay!” She moaned louder, unaware of your presence on the frame of the door, where you were watching them, without breathing.
Jay took Hailey’s legs and he put it on his own shoulder, increasing the pace.
“Yes, cum around me, baby. Cum for me, i love you.”
Surprisingly. It wasn’t watching him fucking her that destroyed you: it was his last three words, the same three words he said to you every morning before going to work, the same three words he said to you on the phone when he was too busy at work to come home, even if he was actually heading to his old apartment, when he was able to fuck his partner whenever he wanted to.
You stepped back silently, too broken to face the truth, too heart broken to face him.
You stepped back and you left without saying a word, without making a noise; you went back inside your car and only then, when Hailey’s and Jay’s moans were far away from you, you started breathing again.
Tears were streaming down your cheeks from minutes probably, but you couldn’t notice it before and you were too shocked to dry off your tears: you just wanted to add as much distance as you could between you and the man you thought was the love of your life.
You didn’t even went back to your apartment, you couldn’t have handle being again in the house that would have been yours, the house in which you hoped you would have started a family with Jay. You didn’t go back to your apartment to collect all your belongings, you just left.
You left a message to your boss’ office regarding your resignation and you drove away.
Away from Jay.
Away from your apartment.
Away from the life you dreamed of with him.
Away from the love.
Away from the pain.
Away from Chicago.

Home To You | Part 1
Fandom: Chicago PD
Characters: Jay Halstead x Reader
Genre: Angst, hurt/comfort, fluff, romance
Warnings: mention of injuries
Word Count: 2489
Requested by jxbeizhe: The reader comes back from service with the army, she stayed longer than Greg and Jay, now deciding it was her time to come home. Since they saw each other last, Greg is now working in Intelligence with Jay, and Jay has been dating Erin. Jay doesn’t find out that the reader is back until he bumps into her leaving Greg’s office on the ground floor of the precinct. She had been smiling as she was leaving Greg’s company, not an unusual sight considering they were friends, but Jay still can’t help the pang of jealousy all within the 5 minutes of seeing the reader for the first time in years. To Jay’s surprise as well the reader has returned from service with a limp and a cane. What happened to the reader out there? And what will happen to her and Jay now that they are reunited once more?
-
Part 1
The L-train follows the curves of the track above the city’s bustle, the screech-rattle of the cars on the rails somehow brings you a comfort you never imagined it would. You look out over the sprawling streets to see everyone’s days in motion. The ordinary sights of people sharing conversation outside coffee shops, construction workers hollering as they work in symphony, and a CFD fire truck passing down below - it all makes you smile. You would have to stop by Firehouse 51 at some point, or better yet drop into Molly’s and see everyone there. You had finally made the decision to switch blistering heat, roaring rocket fire and a Ranger’s uniform for the city you had grown up in. Now it would be civilian clothing, Chicago’s varied and broad soundscape and the excitement for a new chapter of your life.
There was, however, a small caveat to your ‘decision’ to come home. You had decided that the tour you had just finished was going to be your last, yet it was still cut short by the fateful hand of an IED. The explosive device had surprised your small team of Rangers whilst out on a detail, you had all suffered various injuries. For you, it was the shrapnel to your right leg. The damage had required extensive surgeries to repair the bone and muscle just above your knee, going into your thigh. With the best work of surgeons, you had still come away needing regular physiotherapy, carefully managed pain medication and a cane to help you walk.
Yet, all things considered, you could cope with that; you were one of the fortunate to still have a life to live. After months of counselling concerning your time in Afghanistan, as well as occupational therapy about what would come next, you had got yourself to a place where you could make each day work. It had been as difficult as it had been described to you, adjusting to ‘civilian’ life again, and learning to rely on military support groups made you feel uncomfortable, a stark reminder of all that you had done. But it was an unfortunate necessity to be around people who had been in the same situation, something you could only reconcile and grow from going forward. If you couldn’t, then you’d take the breather and restart the next day.
Now that you were indeed a good few months into being back in Chicago, you had decided it was time to see familiar faces. Friends who hadn’t yet been witness to your return. You wondered if they would be upset that you didn’t make your existence known sooner, but on reflection, you don’t think you’d have been good to anybody before now.
You had let Hank Voight know you were back in town, and rather controversially Greg Gerwitz.
The controversy wasn’t because it was Mouse, the controversy was because of who it wasn’t. You had been avoiding Jay Halstead with all the best will in the world, deciding that you didn’t need to cause waves in his life after so many years of him being home and making a new life for himself. Last you heard he had a girlfriend, some detective in the same unit as him, it was better that you just let him be. Right?
So here you were, having got off the L, walking up to the steps of the 21st District with a nervous thrumming in your body. You hadn’t been here in 5 years, Hank had tried to get you to consider the Intelligence unit, but you had decided against it. Choosing to redeploy was right for you at the time, but you couldn’t help but think how different your life could have been. Now, you weren’t sure how someone like you could fit in with that type of work, especially with a physical impairment, not that you didn’t know desk work was a thing. Still, there was a lot left to consider.
Taking a deep breath you come to the top step, and a patrolman holds the door open for you, you thank her as you slip inside, eyeing Trudy Platt filling out a form at her desk, it makes you smile. Trudy had been one that you wanted to surprise, choosing to be entertained by her unfiltered reaction at your return. You take careful steps towards the desk, and come to a standstill in front of the sergeant, leaning slightly against your cane. You clear your throat loudly.
You immediately want to start laughing as Trudy lifts her head with a scowl, ready to chew out whoever was getting her attention in an obnoxious way. But her face immediately softens when she sees who it is,
“Oh my god, you’re alive.” She breathes, coming round the desk to give you a hug with haste.
Laughter escapes you now, chest filling with warmth as Trudy wraps her arms around you, it felt motherly, it felt like home.
“Yep, Sarge. I lived, sorry to tell ya I’m back to being a pain in the ass.”
She makes an indistinct noise of excitement and affection, squeezing you a little tighter.
“It’s good to see you back, kiddo.” She leans back to get a good look at you, still smiling that rarely seen smile around the District.
“It’s good to be back, Trudy. I was thinking we could catch up at Molly’s soon, or uh, I’ve got an apartment, you and Mouch could come over for dinner?”
You almost wanted to cry at Trudy’s clear happiness at seeing you, you clocked a few patrolmen out the corner of your eye gawking at their Sergeant’s uncharacteristic glee.
“You’re not gonna cook for us, we’re gonna cook for you. How about this Sunday? Mouch is off shift, and I’m free.”
You nod enthusiastically, touching her elbow in thanks, “I’d love that, Trudy. Thank you.” She nods approvingly, patting your shoulder before letting you readjust your position. Taking in your cane and knee brace, she finally asks.
“So, out with it, what happened?” The sergeant crossed her arms, disapproving that you got hurt where she couldn’t come and visit you or help you.
“IED.” You shrug, sighing. “Shrapnel messed up the bone and muscle, I can walk, maybe jog a little, but the movement is restricted. I’m doing alright all things considered. I’ve started looking for work, not quite sure what yet. Something First Responder related though.”
She listens intently, mulling over your words. “Well, you know I’ll help you with anything, alright? If you need me to put in a good word or want some contacts, I’m your gal.”
“You are absolutely my gal, Sarge.” You wink, so happy to be back with the people you knew loved and cared for you most.
“I was gonna say hi upstairs if that’s alright, but uh is Mouse around? I heard he has his own little office down here.”
Trudy nods in the direction of a doorway leading down some steps,
“I’ll show you.” She starts walking, and motions to another officer to take over the desk for a minute.
“Great, thanks.” You start moving, taking a glance at the gated stairs that lead to Intelligence’s bullpen, stomach clenching nervously at who would be up there.
You can’t hide forever, dumbass. An internal voice supplies, knowing eventually you’d have to look Jay in the eyes.
A few steps and a corridor later you come to a door that leads into a room, Trudy pushes the door open to reveal a space full of shelves of files and a small wall of monitors with various data, footage and images on it. At the desk facing said electronic wall is the recognisable mop of hair on Mouse’s head. “Why does nobody ever knock-” He grumbles, turning to complain at whoever had just intruded his space, but stops short when a) He sees Trudy’s scowling face and b) Your amused one
“Holy shit, she’s here.” He grins, standing to bring you in for a tight hug.
“I’m here.” You mumble between soft chuckles into his shoulder.
Trudy’s lips upturn ever so slightly, still irritated by Mouse’s tone,
“I’ll be at the desk if you need anything, Y/N.”
“Of course, Sarge, thanks.” You hold up a thumb of approval, keeping your laughter to a minimum until the door closes behind her.
“It’s so good to see you, man.” You grin, ruffling his hair, “You doing okay?” You query, knowing Mouse always found it harder than you or Jay to adjust to being away from military duty.
“Yeah, I’m alright… it has its days, but I like working here for the moment.” You nod, listening to his words, taking in his own space.
“This is a nice little spot, huh?” You remark, flicking one of the Star Trek bobbleheads on his desk.
“It is when nobody is busting into here without knocking.” He muses, you roll your eyes, prodding him in the shoulder.
“Hey, I have a license to intrude, I haven’t seen you in freakin’ years, dude.”
“You are the only one with a license, not even Jay is allowed to just intrude.”
You swallow at the mention of Jay’s name, it doesn’t escape Greg’s attention.
“You spoken to him at all?” He raises an eyebrow, arms folded as he leans against his desk, pulling the chair out for you to sit and rest your leg.
“Thanks.” You say softly, sighing as you continue to answer the question. “I haven’t, he doesn’t know I’m here. Unless you…?”
He holds his hands up immediately, “Hey, I kept you a secret as you requested.”
You smile sheepishly in thanks, it now hits you that you would more than likely see Jay Halstead, for the first time in years, today. You’re rubbing absentmindedly at your aching leg, trying to quieten the nervous adrenaline that thrums through you. Serving together had been simultaneously the best and most challenging experience of your adult life, both of you could never seem to get the timing right and though it wasn’t an entirely negative parting of ways, it still felt that it was something lost.
You and Mouse chat for a while, catching up on things as you glance at the clock on the wall. You hum, preparing to get yourself up,
“I guess I should go up there, huh? If nothing else Hank will want to see me.” You lift yourself out of the chair, finding a good grip on your cane you start to move towards the door. Mouse opens it for you,
“You want me to come up too?” He queries.
You shake your head, “Nah, it’s okay. The others will be up there, I told Adam last time I’d bring him something back from my final tour.”
“Oh yeah, what did you get?”
You pat your jacket pocket, pulling out something small. Mouse snorts,
“A rock?”
“Yep, a very nice sandy rock.”
“He should be honoured.”
“Damn straight.”
“So, going solo?”
“Yeah, yeah, I don’t want to get you in trouble for being in on the secret.”
“You absolutely sure? I can take him, he’s older and slower now.”
The joke has you chuckling loudly, giving Greg a one-armed hug as you shuffle out into the hallway.
“Oh, I will use that line as an ice breaker.”
“Gee, thanks, what happened to not getting me in trouble?”
“Needs must, and that one was too good to not share.”
Greg shakes his head in fake offence, “You are still trouble, Y/N.”
“Oh don’t I know it, bud, don’t I know it… Listen, if I don’t say goodbye or whatever, you wanna meet for drinks or something soon?”
“100%, I’ll text you.”
“Sweet, alright, well wish me luck.”
“Good luck, remember when in doubt, whack him with the cane.”
“I will absolutely do that.” You give Greg one last wave and turn to make your way back up the corridor Trudy had led you down, Mouse shutting the door as you go.
You’re still giggling to yourself as you walk, not noticing the man approaching who had heard you leaving Mouse’s office with laughter. Taking a quick glance at your phone you end up walking into the warm, rigid, frame of the approaching man, the corridor was not exactly roomy enough to simply pass one another. You stumble back, trying to right yourself, but firm and gentle hands grip your arms, one hand moves to your back to stop your descent and the clatter of your cane.
You feel a little embarrassed for not looking where you were going, ready to apologise to whoever had caught you traipsing in the hall,
“Y/N?” His voice is deeper now, but there’s still that curious youth, he had really filled out since you’d seen him last, strong muscular arms, a jawline and stubble that matured his baby face. Despite the change in depth, Jay’s voice was as comforting as ever, and your skin fizzled with goosebumps. His detective badge hung around his neck, green eyes intense and a storm of emotion.
You realise you’ve not said a word yet, simply staring at him dumbfounded when his small snort of laughter brings you back. You laugh awkwardly.
“Jay… hey.”
“Hey… wow, I - when did you get back? I thought the tour wasn’t supposed to be over for months yet?”
“Ah, well, an IED made that decision to retire me early.” You jiggled your cane in your hand, fully aware that Jay was still holding on to you. You clear your throat, and he finally releases you. It would be so easy to immediately pry about your injury, but he knew that wasn’t always the best course of action. He decides you’d share with him if and when you were ready.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N, that’s rough…I, god, sorry there’s so many questions. What are you doing here?” You’re inclined to believe that Jay meant at the District, but you know his expressions well and you see jealousy flicker to the forefront. You were pretty sure he meant “Why are you seeing Mouse before me?”
“Well, I’ve been back a while, and I decided it was time to see old friends.” You smile tightly, a sadness creeping in that you really were hoping would stay at bay. “I was just about to head up and see you guys.”
He nods, keeping his comments to himself for now, “Well, I can come with, I can bother Mouse later.” You were pretty sure that now meant, “I can interrogate Mouse later on about why you didn’t want to see me.”
“Sure, that would be good. I’ve missed everyone.” You smile a little more sincerely now, bracing yourself for everyone’s curiosities and seeing Jay’s partner, now girlfriend.
As you watch Jay head up the corridor with you closely behind, you can’t help but hear the words you wished you’d said a moment ago ringing in your head.
“I missed you, Jay.”
