Art Progress: 10 May (cont.)

Following on from my progress drawing the human figure yesterday, I decided to try another sketch of a character in my long-abandoned story:

In terms of capturing the shadow and proportions accurately, this was above my skill level. Still, I know what to improve on subsequent attempts:

The shading of the lower part of her right-hand side is unrealistic, so I have to improve that. I filled in the hairline through my own imagination, because otherwise she would look bald. 

Furthermore, I need more practice with eyes, lips, and noses. 

Still, have to begin somewhere! Feedback on improving my faces would be appreciated.

Belle and Princess jasmine from the Disney princess series. Another little lino project I've started since Monday. Currently self isolating and there was only one thing for it... Get creative again. Since my sister is a huge Disney fan i decided in the idea of making linocuts of her favourite characters. Today i have just drawn them up into the blocks of Lino using a grid system looking forward to start carving.

How to make a grid drawing

Check out this link to step by step instructions on how to make a grid drawing from a reference image (for us, from a collage).

The basic steps are:

1.) Create your reference image, the thing you will be translating into a drawing.

2.) Figure out how big to make your grid square. Typically folks make them anywhere between 1/4″ to 1″. Generally these choices are made depending on the size of the reference image and the complexity involved. Smaller squares are better for more complex images.

3.) Draw a grid over the top of your  source material in something easy to see, like pen or a sharpie. Do careful straight lines with a ruler.

4.) Many folks find it helpful to label their grids. A good labeling structure is to use letters form left to right and numbers from top to bottom. This way it is easy to identify where you are during the drawing process.

5.) Make the same proportional grid onto your final drawing paper. Use a light hard pencil like a 4h or higher. You can erase the grid later or if its soft enough, it can blend into your drawing. The same number of gridded boxes will be present on your final paper, but they will likely be a different size (probably larger) than on your reference image.

6.) Label your grid on your final drawing paper in the same way you did on your reference image.

7.) Draw your reference image, focusing on one square of the grid at a time.

Art Progress: 29 April 2020

Drawing: 30 Minutes

Number of Sketches: 1

Good Points: More accuracy with shapes and shading. 

To improve: cleaner lines, drawing leaves

Here’s the drawing of houses outside my window from 26/04/2020:

And here’s the same drawing again that I made today (partially out of a lack of any other things to draw):

I think that my observation has improved in the latter picture, as well as the shading. I still have problems with maintaining a steady hand and I wonder whether I should use a harder pencil. 

Right now, this was drawn using an increasingly blunt HB pencil. I might get cleaner lines from a different pencil. At the same time, I also need to loosen my grip on the pencil. I am still too reliant on the scribes grip, which I use for writing. All of this is also linked with developing a better posture at my desk, which allows for more free lines. 

I must say, however, that part of this difference has come from using a grid, as well as using dots to outline the semicircles here. 

I have just reblogged a picture called Chipovnick by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky, which contains the same semicircles and columns which I intend to practice. Yesterday’s Art Progress entry included my practicing of shapes and tone using a grid. Already, I had made a quick outline of what I would copy.  We shall see whether this will come to fruition.
