Bird Box review

   Bird Box, 2 hours and 4 minutes. In short, it’s about a woman surviving a world ending event taking care of some kids in the process. If you haven’t heard of this move then you probably live under a rock, a big pointy rock in the deepest depth of the ocean. I had heard about this movie through numerous sources, Twitter, YouTube, friends, etc. Everyone I spoke to swore it was “the best movie ever”, “it’s soo good you need to watch it!” So I did... and it’s not... 

   Bird Box feels like it doesn’t know what kind of movie it wants to be. The movie is told with flashbacks that happened 5 years ago then jumps to the current time as we seem them trying to survive a perilous journey via a river and a boat. Or least that’s what it says, but actually all the flashbacks take place between a span of several months then shows us the journey of the main character with the kids. It starts off as a end-of-days horror movie with these unknown monsters that start turning their world as they know it upside down. People become suicidal, turn on each other, planes fall out of the sky, you know. Your basic end of the world shit. Eh. Everyone then begins to run to whatever shelter is closest to them and tries to ride it out. There’s even one character that tries to explain everything that’s going on around them, and of course it gets dismissed like any other apocalypse-driven movie out there. One whole hour and 3 missing characters later (avoiding spoilers), a new character shows up and adds new fuel to our invisible monster fire. He pulls out dozens of sketch drawings resembling something that you might read about in a H.P. Lovecraft book and places them onto a coffee table. It felt some what cult-y, so I started to wonder, are these monsters some kind of outer space mythical beings that destroy anyones mind without even trying and somehow control the minds of the crazy people?? Seriously, the easiest example of this exact thing is the one from the big man himself, Cthulhu. 

   Without going into too much detail, only because the mythos on those books will take way too much time, just one glance at Cthulhu will make anyone “turn insane”. All of H.P.’s book explain that looking at any of the “great old ones” will have the same effect. And specifically in “Call of Cthulhu”, he speaks to certain people through telepathy. Like artist and the mentally insane. When Cthulhu finally rises from the people will turn on one another, chaos will rise, and again, normal end of the world stuff. So with the new knowledge you’d think there’d be some new plot development right??? Fuck no! There’s literally no reason to give us any of that new information other than to add tension for another 10 minutes. 

   Any-who, we then jump a few years later and learn that Sandra Bullock’s character has become a more cold and separated person than she was before, shocker, the kids are about 5 years old, and now it’s become a survival horror with not only the invisible monsters out to get them, but all the people that have actually survived looking at the monsters. Oh, and the lack of food. The remaining characters get a glimpse of hope as they hear a random radio signal explaining that there is a shelter somewhere and that it will take two days if they follow some river that magically ends up being in their backyard. Also, I couldn’t get over how they’re barely picking up on the radio transmission. They’ve been in the same place for 5 years, and been in and out of house in the surrounding vicinity and never thought to try different signals at different houses? I’m sorry, I know I’m just nitpicking. Well, long story short, Sandra B. and the kids with no listening skills find the shelter then she learns how to love them and now wants try and be a mother. Almost as she turned on some motherly switch in her head and now cares about them beyond the survival of their lives. 

  By the end of the film there’s really no explanation as to what the hell is going on with the monsters and what the hell they’re going to do about it. It honestly feels like they’ve just accepted their fate and are trying to make the best of it. This movie felt like a combination of several other ideas. Most common one being “A Quiet Place”. But as I mentioned before the movie seems to draw ideas from “Call Of Cthulhu”, even if it was a shameful portrayal of the classic. Ever heard of the movie “The Happening”? Or “Blindness”? Hell, even “The Road” come to mind with it’s similar protective guardian. “Bird Box” wasn’t really that great. It was decent, it passed the time, and I don’t really think I’ll ever watch it again. Unless I’m drunk and literally have nothing else to watch. I’m giving it a 4 blindfolds out of 10. The set up was interesting, but the execution was poor and hollow.
