Felt i needed to explain some characteristics of a very common character found in an admittedly narrow (ha) corridor of the known world

helloooo i figured this would be a good place to ask since youre THE tim drake blog to me, do you know where the jack and janet drake are archeologists thing came from? maybe i just missed something obvious but im really not sure if this is a thing in the comics. they had drake industries and tim said they were traveling on business in early batman comics but he never said what kind of business that i remember. later hes mentioned his dad being away for lectures (i assume jack is the one giving lectures) a few times in robin volume 2. is the archeology stuff one of those things thats mentioned once and the fandom latched on and made it much bigger than it is? or is this actually established as a big thing jack and janet drake did?

I am under the impression that Jack (and presumably Janet) were hobbyist archaeologists and that DI is completely separate from that. It is possible they went to archaeology digs while on work trips, but I do not believe Drake Industries itself is involved in archaeology.

I know Jack is confirmed to be an archaeologist in Robin: 80-Page Giant, but that came out in 2000 and I'm not sure if there is a prior example. It also doesn't seem to be a job for him, rather he seems like a hobbyist.

That being said, the Drake's interest in art has been evident since the very beginning, with Tim noting that his parents own an Erte piece in Batman (1940) #441. However, as Erte hadn't passed away yet at the time this comic was published, his work wouldn't have been considered historical, and it definitely would not have been involved in any archaeological digs.

We also see here that Tim is fairly knowledgeable about art, recognizing both a Renoir piece and an Erte piece immediately. It is possible he recognizes the Renoir piece simply because he's a Bruce Wayne superfan and the Erte piece because his parents own something similar, but it is also possible that his parents instilled an interest in art in him at an early age because of their own hobbies.

I also think that Jack might be involved in some sort of historical or archaeological club. In Batgirl (2000) #32 he mentions being part of the "Ninth Legion" and that its members were receiving threats from a woman looking for an ancient Roman artifact, and then it turns out that Jack does own this artifact. I have no way of knowing if he was in this club prior to Janet's death though, or the specifics of what the club is actually for.

Also when they're kidnapped during their trip during Rite of Passage they're wearing clothes that I think would be close to what someone would wear during an archaeological dig? But I'm no expert and these could just be general travel clothing. However, if they were preparing to do business I feel like I would expect them to be wearing something different? Especially since their assistant is dressed completely differently than they are.

In regards to what DI actually does, I'm pretty sure the only thing we know for sure about what DI is is that they have a medical subsidiary that seems to sell medical supplies.

However, we also know this isn't the only company owned by DI ("that's one of my dad's companies"). That being said, I don't recall anything in the comics that would suggest DI has anything to do with archaeology, especially since Jack refers to himself as an amateur.

Also important to note that from what I understand, what Jack is doing, just... taking artifacts home and keeping them like he does in Robin: 80-Page Giant and Batgirl (2000) is super illegal and was illegal when these comics were published. It's a bit difficult to say for sure since the laws will be different depending on what country you're in, but here's an article on the development of antique laws during the 1900s if you're curious https://archive.archaeology.org/online/features/schultz/intllaw.html. The comics never suggest that this is illegal, so maybe the authors just didn't consider that, but I feel like this is further evidence that DI can't really be involved in archaeology. Even if DI was involved in some sort of illegal antique trade, surely Jack wouldn't just be keeping highly valuable artifacts like the one from Batgirl (2000) in his closet if this was his job, they'd be sold to someone.

that's a great question tho! I have indeed thought about writing a fic... for years tbh...

but there's a myriad of problems

well first of all I'm not native in english. that is probably noticeable more often than not. I sometimes even use a translator, I always secretly got google/dict.cc open in a second tab. didn't formally learn english, I just snagged it by proxy listening to American Youtubers and reading manga online. that's why I prefer to ramble a bit in public or to my damn self in private areas than live-texting 1 on 1/in groups; bc I can take more time totally judgement-free. you're gonna see me "typing..." for 30 minutes and wonder wtf is taking this mf so long?!

apart from that there's dyslexia. I can't spell one word correctly without swipe-to-type autocorrect. I think all arguments I've gotten into stem from me mistyping, using completely wrong words, messing up the sentence structure etc

my brain is a single dense cloud of fog that'll occasionally split open to drizzle down a bunch of jumbled thoughts that I could turn into barely cohesive words if I'm brave enough and exude copious amounts of energy.

so my linguistic skills are not up to par. my intelligence lies more in... intrapersonal and existential departments.

unsurprisingly I've thus become a visual artist to express myself.

the catch is... that I understand paperhat, I do.

but I can't seem to draw toxic dynamics. my head is just empty about how to depict it. it's like it doesn't come naturally to me. not without going overboard and making a whole comic that I would likely abandon before even reaching the half mark. I've been given these angelic skills along with the curse that I shall only draw joyous, bright scenes.

however if I could write it... now we're talking.

as a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that most of my ideas are way too dark and sober. people don't know me like that so I'm petrified about the presumably shocked response when and if I did drop smth like that.

I'm not ready for that... I have really severe OCD (that the internet is making way worse with their anxious tendencies to interpret smth sinister into any and all fiction that is not happiness and rainbows. which seems new to me, idk where this mindset to read so deep into shit is suddenly coming from. I was here 2017-19, left for like 3 years and all of a sudden everybody's fallen off their rockers)

writing domestic stuff is too boring for me... there's gotta be gut-wrenching horrors and drama and tragedy and conflict!

none of this would be PG (which is what I assume you're asking for anyway) I'd just write smut with sprinkles of character studies and a pinch of comedy mayhaps, but I used to do that about 10 years ago and it was so bad. the way I describe these scenes comes off very plump and cringe

To be a Hater, you must go at it alone. You must be known as "the guy who hates XYZ" in your friend group. If everyone in that group falls under that umbrella, then you've got yourself a crab bucket. Not even in a "getting help" sense, you'll just feed off each other in an endless cycle wasting too much of your time until that's all you ever talk about.

If you've ever seen subreddits dedicated to venting/problems or being critical of something, you'll understand why. Normal people say their piece and move on. They won't stick around for long. However, in order for those subs to be maintained and its community to remain active, you need to have regulars keeping the ball rolling. When that happens day in and day out with no breaks, that's just a downwards spiral, mister.

Ranting to friends who don't actually give a shit is key. Their zen attitude grounds you back to reality, and your disdain for shit that doesn't matter is amusing from the sidelines. For me: One friend is "the one who hates Fourth Wing." Another is "the one who hates Danganronpa." I'm "the guy who hates Legend of Korra." We all have our own niche, and by maintaining a variety of haters who don't all agree, we cultivate a welcoming environment of complaining.

My reaction can be summarised as this (yet again):

I don't have many thoughts because uh. That was depressing as hell and I need to stare at a wall.

But I DO gotta say that the subplot with the dead "wife" was so telenovela-esque that for a good minute it was more funny than depressing. Then it got depressing. But it was so jarring and so far out of the left field that for a good second my friend and I had to pause the audiobook and laugh because ????????? Unhinged to just appear, go "I am Eslin, I have a G U N. My secret wife was killed. By my boss. Now I yearn for sweet sweet revenge." and not elaborate. Like. Damn dude ok. Sorry about our wife also. Fucking killed me that he continued like "So anyway I reacted adequately by killing all of my boss' friends. Starvation style." Like ???? Jjhsgdjsdfghsjdfh what????? I mean damn I do respect the grind set but also that's such an absurd escalation out of context. Did your boss kill your wife? Kill all of his friends! And in context the most absurd part is probably the notion that Visser 3 has friends??????? Like??? Wait no Eslin. Eslin wait. I love your John Wick-esque "fridged wife" trope swag but you need to slow down. I need details. I need you to tell me HOW your boss even has friends.

In my heart I do not believe we will see that madman ever again but on god I do wish for an insane telenovela-esque sequence of him just showing up at the most random moment to do exactly one thing and that's to pull a gun on Visser 3. For no reason, I just think it would be kinda funny. Like,,,did your boss kill your wife?:

Kill all of his friends

Acquire a G U N

Attempt to make the local Andalite youth assassinate your boss for you

Pull the gun on your boss

???????

Aside from that, I also need to say that the moment when Ax called Tobias his close friend at the end was so sweet. Also ngl kinda...concerning/harrowing how much Tobias really doesn't give a shit about not being a human. Like it doesn't seem so concerning from other points of view but the way Ax gets increasingly weirded out by Tobias not asking him about the nothlit (idk if I'm spelling that right rn) really reminds you that it IS kinda worrying. Like I get it, I mean...Tobias has no family that cares about him, he has no friends outside of the Animorphs friend group, why would he care? But it's still kinda...yeah.

Also unimaginably surprised by the amount of collective guilt present in the Andalite society. You'd think they're Catholic or something the way they keep beating themselves up and force everyone to also beat themselves up and their system itself is saturated with the guilt and shame and they teach it to kids at school from an early age. Like. Jesus Christ calm down. Stop that. As the Animorphs said at the end of the book - the Andalites made an oopsie once. It sucked, yes, it continues to have consequences that suck, yes, but it happens. Sometimes you think you're doing something kind and it turns into a disaster. That does not mean you should beat yourself up for it or, god forbid, tell other people that they should not be kind lest they make a mistake. Damn I guess we should all be cold assholes forever, huh? I'm sure that can't have any negative consequences.

Andalite society in general seems kinda unhinged. Like...do I get why it is like that? Yeah. But do I find it unhinged? Also yeah. Like ok duty and the collective being the most important things is totally sensible for a prey animal. Safety of the herd and all that. But it's still kinda unhinged that they do make everyone have duty as their number 1 priority and that they have rituals devoted to it. Not all rituals are spiritual or religious in nature, but the morning ritual is kinda...borderline religious in a way. More spiritual than religious, I suppose, but yeah.

Also I love Ax so much. 10/10 character. He has it all: an incredibly hilarious desire for cinnamon buns, the inability to act like a human being (same dude), spitting random facts at completely random times, a thirst for blood only a 13(?) years old could have, a dysfunctional obsession with duty and doing what is right that only a 13(?) years old could have (also lol yeah dude I was like that when I was 13 too. dw you'll grow out of it), he can even code. And he might even be bi (I'm joking but I' referring to the fact that he was like "Yeah so when I morph into a human form I suddenly agree that Rachel is beautiful and that Marco is cute.").
