Webb captures Neptune's auroras for the first time

For the first time, the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has captured bright auroral activity on Neptune. Auroras occur when energetic particles, often originating from the Sun, become trapped in a planet’s magnetic field and eventually strike the upper atmosphere. The energy released during these collisions creates the signature glow.

In the past, astronomers have seen tantalizing hints of auroral activity on Neptune. However, imaging and confirming the auroras on Neptune has long evaded astronomers despite successful detections on Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. Neptune was the missing piece of the puzzle when it came to detecting auroras on the giant planets of our Solar System. Now, Webb’s near-infrared sensitivity has observed this phenomenon.

The data was obtained in June 2023 using Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph. In addition to the image of the planet, astronomers obtained a spectrum to characterise the composition and measure the temperature of the planet’s upper atmosphere (the ionosphere). For the first time, they found an extremely prominent emission line [1] signifying the presence of the trihydrogen cation (H3+), which can be created in auroras. In the Webb images of Neptune, the glowing aurora appears as splotches represented in cyan.

The auroral activity seen on Neptune is noticeably different from what we are accustomed to seeing here on Earth, or even Jupiter or Saturn. Instead of being confined to the planet’s northern and southern poles, Neptune’s auroras are located at the planet’s geographic mid-latitudes — think where South America is located on Earth.

This is due to the strange nature of Neptune’s magnetic field, originally discovered by NASA’s Voyager 2 in 1989, which is tilted by 47 degrees from the planet’s rotation axis. Since auroral activity is based where the magnetic fields converge into the planet’s atmosphere, Neptune’s auroras are far from its rotational poles.

The ground-breaking detection of Neptune’s auroras will help us understand how Neptune’s magnetic field interacts with particles that stream out from the Sun to the distant reaches of our solar system, a totally new window in ice giant atmospheric science.

From the Webb observations, the science team also measured the temperature of the top of Neptune’s atmosphere for the first time since Voyager 2’s flyby. The results hint at why Neptune’s auroras remained hidden from astronomers for so long: Neptune’s upper atmosphere has cooled by several hundreds of degrees.

Through the years, astronomers have predicted the intensity of Neptune’s auroras based on the temperature recorded by Voyager 2. A substantially colder temperature would result in much fainter auroras. This cold temperature is likely the reason that Neptune’s auroras have remained undetected for so long. The dramatic cooling also suggests that this region of the atmosphere can change greatly even though the planet sits over 30 times farther from the Sun compared to Earth.

Equipped with these new findings, astronomers now hope to study Neptune with Webb over a full solar cycle, an 11-year period of activity driven by the Sun’s magnetic field. Results could provide insights into the origin of Neptune’s bizarre magnetic field, and even explain why it’s so tilted.

These observations were obtained as part of Guaranteed Time Observations in programme 1249 (PI: L. Fletcher). The team’s results have been published in Nature Astronomy.

Wriothesley’s arms were lazily wrapped around Arata, hxs head on the Duke’s chest. The warmth of the Cryo user was confusing to h🩸m at first, but h3 got used to it fairly quickly, appreciating it. Especially on cold nights like this, h<3 liked to enclose h!mself around the taller man like a koala.

Sending you an ask to dream on. Are there any particular themes in dramas that tend to speak to you most or draw you into an emotional connection with a story?

Oooh there sure are! A big one that I've talked about before is grief and loss: not necessarily a death, although it often is that, but anything where a character has lost a major underpinning of their life and has to rebuild around that gap. I love the bittersweetness of a happy ending built on the grounds of a loss that's still felt: it will make me weep like nothing else.

Another is the stories characters tell themselves and how it shapes their interactions. Toh in SCOY is a great example: he's got this story in his head where Nuea is the inaccessible star and he's the humble adorer worshipping in secret, and he's so stuck in that narrative he can't see how much Nuea loves and treasures him. Only Friends is also giving us some fantastic examples, especially in Mew and and the stories he tells himself about who he is relative to his friends, and how his love life is supposed to go.

In terms of romance themes, pre-existing intimacy gets me so invested. When characters already love each other, understand each other, or see each other as essential in their lives, and THEN start to fall in love?? I'm in, I'm hooked, I live for it. Friends to lovers is obviously a great trope for this, but so is longstanding enemies to lovers like in H3: Trapped. (H4, of course is ENTIRELY about the complications of changing the nature of pre-existing intimacy, which is one of the reasons I love it so.)

"Look, I know you're angry right now, but-"

Kris interrupts her. "You knew EVERYTHING about what's going on here? About what's going on with me? Why didn't you tell me?!"

Cara is trying to stay as calm as possible. "What was I even supposed to say? That the only known way of escaping is trapping someone else? That wouldn't fix anything!"

"Well- no, but-"

Kris takes a deep breath.

"Look. I just needed answers. I just needed to know. And I trusted you to give me the information I needed to know. And all this time... you just wanted to let all of that stay forgotten? You didn't even tell me who I used to be, I had to find that out on my own!"

Cara raises her voice a bit, getting desperate. "It's not that easy! I wasn't even part of this in the first place, I just somehow got included! I know you may not believe me, but I don't have all the answers you want. I really don't! Sure, I knew your name but, at first, that was it, I promise!"

Kris stays silent for a moment before speaking again. "...I see. But that doesn't stop the fact that... I'm feeling conflicted on what to think about you. Look, it's not your fault. But I think... I need to think things through. On my own this time. Maybe after this, I could go back to talking to you. Maybe not."

Kris heads towards the door, not even looking back. Cara looks shocked, her eyes watery.

"Wait... No... Please..."

As Kris goes offscreen, footsteps could be heard, before a door opens and closes.

Cara falls to her knees, the same shocked expression on her face, tears now falling down her cheeks. Her body is also started to glitch.

"D0N'T g0... pL3asE..."

Her body starts glitching harder. It looks like she's in pain.

"H3|_P..."

After a moment of sobbing and heavy breathing, her expression suddenly changes to a blank one, her eyes completely white.

She drops on the floor, not moving anymore.
