ok i finished mr robot over a week ago so its time for me to write my little essay. (and by essay i mean uh. vaguely coherent thoughts about media on the Talking about Media website)

so, almost everyone i talk to about this show has been like "yeah i really liked the first 2 seasons but then it got crazy/i stopped watching/i never finished it." and perhaps i am at an advantage by binge watching all of it 4 years after the finale. or perhaps i love a relatable socially awkward protagonist more than they do. but i really was hooked the entire time. except! whatever the hell they did to my girl angela?? it sucked!

Angela had such cool arcs for the first 2 seasons. she was professional, talented, dealing with shitty men like a boss. seeing her take a job at ecorp and doing a whole "can you take them down from the inside or are you just complicit" arc was cool. having her as a foil to all the #hackerz but still helping them was cool. i really really loved angela's character. (i would've loved to see her with elliot by the end, but hey man idk what the consensus on that is bc i havent read online posts about this show). and then. And Then.

she gets brainwashed. there was never, in my opinion, a satisfying explanation to HOW she was brainwashed. angela is smart and independent and defiant and i'm not saying smart people can't ever get brainwashed but "whiterose showed me her machine" is really NOT a satisfying enough reason to completely destroy such a great character. we watch her betray her best friend, help with terrorism, go insane, and get killed? and there's never a satisfying reason. we never see or hear about what exactly whiterose showed her.

and then it's like she's reduced to a blurry wife and a pair of ballet slippers. when she was so cool before... i absolutely hate to see it. i waited until the show ended to write all this down because i thought we would get some closure or explanation at least, but i feel like angela did not at all get what she deserved from the show. so not cool.

How to remain safe in the modern world:

Exercise common sense about unknown URLs and emails. (Be a skeptical petty asshole until proven safe)

That's it! All a "modern" operating system does, is have more spyware and adware built in to waste performance and space, and otherwise is only needed for major hardware/software jumps (like DX12 existing)

You do not need a paid antivirus. or an unpaid one (if you feel you do, Windows has one now, Windows Defender Antivirus.)

You do not need to be "Up to date" other than fixing bugs.

Stop fearmongering over "Omg the hackerz!!!1". It's not 2003, it's not the era of random attacks. You are not the target, your bank or your amazon account are and they already probably have that info, or could get it in a minute if it mattered.
