honestly i think half the reason why quadrants are so misunderstood is because when they were introduced no one was sayin boyfriend or girlfriend. like if the first meowrails convo had the narrator call equius nepetas moody boyfriend instead of just moody friend half of this goddamn fandom wouldve had some modicum of understanding.

What are some interactions you wish we couldve gotten/seen more of in Homestuck? And if we had gotten those interactions, what do you think they'd be like?

It felt like John's place in Dave's whole arc was completely forgotten about. Like, Dave growing past a need for John's approval doesn't mean the narrative shouldn't care about it. Maybe this should have gone to Davesprite, but...

More Rose-Jade interaction in general. I love them both as characters, and the lack of the dynamic really hurts the worldbulding in my mind. Friendship is such a big thing in Homestuck... except these two members of the group that talked like twice.

We get some of this with Roxy, but if even half of the narrative attention of John-Dad and Dave-Bro got paid to Rose-Mom, I'd die a happy nerd.

TLDR: I love Rosemary as much as the next sapphic, but I feel like Rose is underutilized as a character outside of it.

Also, more Meowrails. Act 5's pacing as a whole is funky, and its especially clear with these two. My read on them as a whole is "Equius is CORRECT, but he's being toxic about it because he's 13 and has some classism to unlearn." but we can't have them go from "Nepeta is afraid to voice her opinion" to "unproblematic OTP in a pile" in like 2 conversations.

Either some Terezi-Tavros interactions, or a lampshade hung on the lack of them. Either way could work for Terezi's character, but they both say very different things.

Song analysis: Harpy Hare - Yaelokre

Meowrails relationship with Gamzee stuff uhhh… coming from an Equius kin!!

Quick note: I will be skipping lyrics that just don’t fit or are repeats :D

Trigger warning for death. (Nepeta, Equius and Gamzee kins be warned!)

Now let’s begin!

“Harpy Hare, Where have you buried all your children? 

Tell me so I say.

Ah yes. The most iconic ones. The chorus of the song. So! Harpies often represent fear and are generally not representative of anything good. Hares can represent impatience and haste. Who is a combination of those things? Gamzee. As Equius, Gamzee was a good friend of me, Nepeta and Tavros. Often times the other three that weren’t me would joke how were some family, with Gamzee being our “caretaker” and later, when we figured out human terminology our “Dad”. “Where have you buried all your children” reminds me of how he killed me and Nepeta. “Tell me so I say” sounds very demanding to me? Like someone is telling you “Tell me now!” Or something like that which that reminds me of how Gamzee would often push boundaries or not respect a “No” if we didn’t want to say anything. In conclusion for the chorus: Gamzee being Gamzee I guess.

“All the arrows that you’ve stolen,

Like your heart that was so eager to be hid.”

I do believe Gamzee might’ve snapped a ton of my arrows in half before killing me. He used to do that just for fun because he liked the sound it made. The third lyric reminds me of Nepeta and her aspect. She’s the ‘heart’ in this case, hiding in the vents.

In a less literal sense, I had a crush on Tavros and I knew Gamzee did to. I hid that fact because I wanted Gamzee to succeed because he was someone important to me. So I didn’t say anything.

“You can’t keep them all caged

They will fight and run away

Mother tell me, so I say (la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la)”

I interpret this lyric normally without the context of meowrails as someone being held back from doing something and fighting to do so something. Putting this into the homestuck context, I am going to admit fault. I didn’t want Nepeta to do a lot of things because it was too “dangerous” and I was worried about her. But in all actually honesty, she would’ve been fine. She was the more strong willed one of either of us. “Mother tell me, so I say” is actually quite important in this verse because I remember pressuring Nepeta to tell me absolutely EVERYTHING. We didn’t have secrets and I feel bad about that now.

“Forest walls and starry ceilings

Barren curtains that your weaving

Like the stories that you keep inside your head.”

“Forest walls and starry ceilings” reminds me of Nepetas cave. That place was more home then my hive actually was. 

“Barren curtains that your weaving” mostly reminds me of how me and Nepeta decorated her cave, because before I really came along it was definitely empty. Just the drawings on the walls. If I never stepped in she’d have probably been sleeping on the floor still.

“Like the stories that you keep inside your head.” Reminds me of how me and Nepeta made an entire universe. No, I didn’t roleplay. Did I write though? Yes. I wrote A LOT. (I’m bringing Ferrin Darkwel, the coolest cowboy in all of the five middles back)

As Equius I had this looming pressure to keep everyone safe. I needed to. One of my thoughts before fully dying was: “I failed my friends”. I felt sick. I thought I could help my friends and I failed. Anyway. “They will die and be afraid” is pretty self explanatory. Me and Nepeta dying, you’ve heard the tune before.

In conclusion: this isn’t the last Yaelokre song I will be doing

For the kink requests: Meowrails cum inflation. (Nep is the one receiving. Doesn't have to be an obscene amount, just kinda noticeable)

It's a little awkward. But then again, they both anticipated that; they're not exactly the most well-versed trolls when it came to pailing, which was why they were even doing it together. It was one of those stupid pacts that people made with their friends, or, as the case may be, with their moirails.

If we're both virgins by the time we've both had our tertiary molts, we'll sleep together.

Of course, they had both laughed, Equius had went back to half-sleeping on her lap, and the rest of the early morning had passed the same way it always did; watching romance movies, and Nepeta complaining about the incompatibility of the predesignated couples while she fed Equius carrot sticks like he was a particularly needy pet hoofbeast.

And now, since Equius' slower growth had finally caught up with Nepeta's to have them both comfortably out of their tertiary molt periods, they were stuck with the reality of their conversation. Equius was, again, curled up against Nepeta and accepting her gracious attention, while Nepeta herself was talking through their options.

"Of purrse, we don't have to do anything. Obviously."

"Obviously. But if you wanted to, Nepeta--" He sat up, slightly and looked at her eyes. The color had come in more clearly over the sweeps, and she was only getting prettier. He felt guilty about being, presumably, the main cause of her lack of romantic partners. A hulking blueblood she was constantly toweling off wasn't exactly going to get many people interested in a lowblood. "I'm not uncomfortable. I adore you."

Her hand, bigger now but still extremely warm, rested on his cheek. "I love you, Equihiss. I just don't want it to be, you know, weird. I mean it's gonna be weird! It will be, but I don't wanna not have you with me beclaws of it." Her bottom lip trembled.

"I could never leave you, Nepeta. You are my beloved diamond, no matter what we- what we might d-do." He wiped reflexively at his forehead and neck, the main reason for his own lack of experience. "And, if I can be l-lewd," Nepeta nodded, knowing he wanted her permission when he said that. "I would feel somewhat more comfortable, knowing that it was you. That you would be with me."

Now, Nepeta was smiling, her other hand cupping his cheek, and she kissed him, soft and chaste. "Of course. I'll always keep you safe, Equius. Besides, I was thinking the same thing." Her ears twitched, pleased.

Kissing was easy. Although they had taken it up more slowly, out of Equius' fear of hurting her and Nepeta's wavering comfort with bodily fluids (as laughable as it was), kissing was easy once they got started. It was smooth, with Nepeta pulling him over her and holding his hair in a loose fist to keep it from falling in their face. When he was able to break his focus on her tongue in his mouth, he felt her putting it up in a hair tie.

"It'll just break." He mumbled, doing what he could to keep from flinching when her hands slid from their resting place at his shoulders to slide over his chest. Her mouth was on his neck, and he shivered. She smelled good. "I should just lay down. I-I'm dripping, Nepeta."

The towels of their pile were starting to get slightly damp, even though his sweating had tapered off somewhat. Still, she pulled at the hem of his shirt. "I'm gonna need a shower anyway, right? I've never minded before." Her voice was shockingly confident, even though her hands were wavering, unsure where to rest.

He nodded, and sat back to strip his shirt off. She sat up, and pulled her own off, tossing it out of the pile and onto the basement floor. The movie seemed muffled when he kissed her again, when her hands curled around his grubscars curiously. He giggled, twitching to get out of her reach, and she wrapped her legs around his waist.

Feeling her press against him was the first time he realized his bulge was already starting to slip out, and he shuddered again. Her own was twisting under her pants, and when he moved to pull his shorts open, she did the same. Her rumblespheres spilled to either side of her chest, and he let her put his hand on her chest, trying to only match the pressure she started.

Her legs curled slightly up as she pushed her pants down, trying not to move away, and Equius whimpered when his bulge slithered over the lips of her nook. His hips twitched, and she gasped, her claws sinking into his wrist. It was, apparently, that easy. Before he could fully catch his breath, he was half inside her, his thighs tense and shivering as he watched her hand press against the top edge of her nook, rubbing her pleasurenub quickly.

He cursed as she pulsed around him, pulling him in deeper, past the tapered end, and she yanked him down to kiss him again as his hair broke the rubber band, curtaining around their faces as he rolled his hips against her. Sweat pooled in the hollow of her throat, both his and hers, and he delicately wiped it with a towel, between slow, kisses, his hips moving reactively

Her bulge couldn't quite reach his own nook, from the position and how it was trapped between her thighs, but he hoped he would have another chance with her. Nepeta's hands pet through his hair, her voice was still that high, warm tone he loved so much, her body was reassuring against his. It felt like he was wrapped in her embrace, her safety.

"Oh." He gasped, breathing against her chest as he curled up. His fingers brushing against her grubscars made her pulse, made her squirm and whine, and he was caught off-guard when he came. "Oh, Nepeta. Nepeta."

She purred, though it broke up around light, breathy little moans, and kept her hands tangled in his hair to keep him close. At some point, she spilled over her stomach, though he couldn't really tell when. When he was finally released, and able to get his legs under himself properly, he was wobbly as a foal.

Nepeta let her legs down, and he gently undressed her the rest of the way before flopping face-down onto the pile beside her. "Goodness."

She giggled. "Goodness!" Her legs kicked slightly. "I didn't expect it to be so much."

He lifted his head to agree, but she was looking down at herself, at the small rounded lump of, he guessed, her seedflap. He could see blue through her skin, and had to hide his face again. "I-I'm sorry, I meant to p-pull back--" He stopped when she pat his head.

"I'm okay. It felt... Interesting. I don't know if I liked it, you know? D'you think we could try again, Equihiss? I-I mean, would you be okay? Are you okay?" She rolled over, onto his back, and kissed his shoulder. "Are you alright, Equius?"

Equius nodded. "Embarrassed. I liked it so-so much more than I thought, it feels kind of bad." He turned his head, and she kissed his cheek. "I don't want to seem like I'm quad-hopping."

Now, Nepeta snorted a laugh, snuggling under his chin, and it felt exactly like it always did. "Couldn't be you, Equius. And I'd never be worried about that. I know better." She paused. "We have to restart the movie, huh?"

An Introduction to PMIO Theory

From here on out, I'm going to start tagging certain posts "PMIO Theory." I've also gone back and added it to my first post, which pretty succinctly demonstrates how critical the ideas contained within it are to this blog. So what does it mean? PMIO stands for Patron, Matron, Infant, Orphan. The theory at its most basic, posits a symbolic relationship between the characters Feferi, Kanaya, and Eridan. Controversially, it also posits that the characters of Feferi and Kanaya are flawed, and deserve correction through character development. They are in fact, not badass girlbosses, but kids that like all of the beta trolls, were uniquely traumatized by the manipulations of their abusive guardian Doc Scratch. It is this trauma that manifests in maladaptive behavior that ends up harming both themselves and others.

The four main tenets in more detail:

1. Patron

Feferi is the Patron. Her character, although not masculine in many ways, has a distinct patronizing streak that lends her to the masculine side of the "parents" in PMIO. A layer deeper, her multiple allusions to general imperialism and more specifically "The White Man's Burden" solidifies her as practicing paternalism. It is in the first PMIO tagged post that I explore that in more depth. The patron side of the "parents" is defined by being overly-assertive, or to stick to Homestuck terms, the active characteristic of Feferi's Witch class. The Witch class, witch (hehe) is of course the opposite of the Sylph.

2. Matron

Kanaya is the Matron. Her character, although so deeply identified as lesbian, is also deeply symbolically attached to motherhood. Her position as matron speaks more for itself than the patron. However, her being maternal is also bad, but less for others, and more for herself. For one, especially notable for a character who is so obviously a lesbian, her self worth is tied to the reproductive duties of the "jadeblood caste." Kanaya also suffers what I would call a chronic passivity, the same characteristic that sets her and Feferi's classes apart. Her first instinct to things that upset her is passive aggression, making her ineffective until too late at best, and enabling of others worst habits at worst, all of which hurts her.

3. Infant

Considered together, their shared aspect is their Infantilization of others, which this theory posits is something the narrative seeks to criticize about them, and the act of infantilization as harmful. It is important to remember that in the narrative as it is presented to the audience, Feferi and Kanaya are blatantly made out to be two halves of Hivebent's "bad moirallegiences," moirallegiences defined by the reversal of ever critical attraction to the pacifier clause in the troll romance exposition. The quote, for the reader's convenience:

"Trolls are a very angry and violent race. Some are more hot-tempered and dangerous than others, to the extent that if left to their own devices, they would present a serious threat to society, or even to themselves. Such trolls will have an instinctive pale attraction to a more even-tempered troll, who may become their MOIRAIL. The moirail is obliged to pacify the other, to function as the better half. The two partners in a strong pale relationship will serve to balance and complement each other's emotional profiles, and thus allow their other relationships to be more successful." (pg. 2401) [Emphasis added]

Contrast how these bad moirallegiences compare to the positive example of moirallegience in Meowrails. Nepeta neither patronizes nor fails to be direct in her criticism of Equius, ":33 < everyone knows youre a weirdo and a cr33p! / :33 < thats why youre lucky to have me to k33p an eye on you." Equius on the other hand, has a pale attraction to Nepeta and explicitly would like to pacified, "D --> As such, [Gamzee] is prone to being more violent and unpredictable than any of us / D --> Not everyone has been as lucky as I in the domain of moirallegiance."

As moirails, Feferi and Kanaya fundamentally fail because they're getting the order of how moirallegiences work wrong. For Feferi, it's a case of the exposition's example of mistaken signals, where she feels invited as moirail when in reality Eridan doesn't feel that way. For Kanaya, it's her fussiness and caring personality that gets in the way of properly expressing her own red feelings as Vriska uses her for her own gain. Both of them are attempting to interject themselves as a literal form of pacifier to their respective dangerous personalities, but aren't wanted as one in the first place. In other words, they are implicitly underestimating the maturity of their "moirail's" actual intentions and capabilities, and thus, infantilizing them.

4. Orphan

Finally, Eridan, as the Orphaner, was designed from the start to contrast with Feferi and Kanaya, and provide them character development by indicting their patronizing and matronly traits as harmful. Had things gone differently, whether you want to call it headcanon or the canon that could've been, or the true plan that was abandoned because Act 6 is a rushed mess, their character development would have been catalyzed by the Orphaner's symbolic rather than literal destruction of the patron and matron, eg. an Orphaning. This character development would allow them to effectively become their mature selves, and thus allow Homestuck to complete itself as a kind of "ensemble bildungsroman."

what do you think of arquiusprite? specially in relation to that meowrails bit. homestuck does say Eq is totally not a racist harasser anymore. but its very much a 'whats done is done; lets move on already' sort of thing.

unsurprisingly i do not care for him. as a plot device for the sake of ensuring components of LE end up where they need to be its like whatever. kind of lazy but thee was not going to be a version of equius becoming a character with a speaking role again was going to interest me because homestuck was never going to grapple with his creation in a way i care about.

yeah as a character moment basically just what you said. we are expected to accept this and move past it, if we ever had any qualms to begin with. we arent even admitting the whole of what he was responsible for much less doing anything to make the idea of a reconciliation with nepeta satisfying in any way. and again it was never going to go in a direction i personally gave half a shit about in part just because i dont careeeee sorry. but late homestuck was really scared of scarring the reputation of any character that wasnt a fandom wide laughing stock and i think it was interesting it literally went so far as to do so somewhat for both equius and eridan while still just like goofily referencing gamzee is literally in the fridge. like yeah ok but the guy she killed who literally sexually harrassed her gets to have closure with the girl he arguably lead to her death after being hyper controlling of her + her status for assumedly years of friendship. sure. whatever. and itsmore sprite bullshit i dont care about.
