This work took me way longer then I planned it to, hehe, but it was a fun experiment of mine in testing out couple of new techniques. While I am not fully satisfied with how a character turned out in a couple of places of a picture, I think it was not a bad result for a first try)).
This's a small "thank you" work I drew for @wei-smiler, who was very kind to answer questions I had about Chinese hieroglyphs and seals. I decided to draw their Jackie Chan Adventures OC, princess turned Oni known by the name Shiro.
In this post you can see a full/original version of a picture and a close-up of Shiro's face with an outline of an Uchiva fan she's holding. The symbol "flower/petal" on a fan itself is the one we can find on Hanafuda Cards from JCA series.

Happy Germa 66 day 6/6
#ジェルマの日
June 6 is Germa Day in the Japanese fandom and I thought it would be fun to join in on the event.
#one piece#vinsmoke ichiji#one piece sanji#vinsmoke brothers#germa 66#stealth black#my art#ジェルマの日#ジェルマの日2024#germa#Fun fact my piece for Germa 66 day was inspired by hanafuda cards art and colour palette mainly the Japanese ones.#Sanji the sun while Ichiji is the moon. I just love me some symbolism but also symmetry.#Also I just find it really neat and interesting that Ichiji and Sanji practically opposite to each other colour wise with their suits.#Also credit to genomynt who posted the other Germa 66 day art here and for tagging the Japanese tags. You’re an absolute star for it.#Also I hope you don’t mind me using them for my Germa 66 day post as well. OVO’)#black leg sanji

The works I submitted for the PIE International Next ILLUST Award 2024 contest!
This is the first time I've went and submitted works to anything since graduating college, so I lost a lot of confidence, but please wish me luck!
#doodles#my art#non fandom stuff#the top 3 illustrations are new and yes wakely is there!!#I think the Hanafuda Girls illustration is my favorite of my new pieces#I had a lot of fun with it and trying to make each “card” look interesting#I'm probably going to do several more actually... eventually#And the gardening one was a rework of a doodle from a while back and I got scared to do more color lmao#the old works are two doodles and one classwork piece#ah... ok i'm less nervous now#I think I'm going to keep my eyes open for other illustration and comic opportunities so I can actually try and put more effort#into making works for it and giving it my all!!#anyway here's the works please give em a look!

“Shufu, it is all a misunderstanding—” But it does not make much of a difference. Wei Wuxian is more than six inches taller than he is, and the Lans are taller still. They are perfectly able to talk over his head. Not for the first time, Meng Yao reflects with teeth-grinding frustration that perhaps he should take to wearing a very tall hat.
I just read "both the prison and the open hand (bells on low, on high)" by ariaste on ao3 and I definitely didn't do the scene justice but the idea of modernau!JGY thinking wistfully of his ridiculous hat made me laugh too much not to desperately try to scribble out the scene
#tiny fucking gremlin i love him#modern au jgy is honestly my favourite thing because all his conniving gets funneled into the most ridiculous possible schemes#like smuggling a LOT of booze into lqr's house with wwx#i've been doing way too many hanafuda cards lately where i actually care about the outcome#i desperately needed to do something silly and cartoony this was cleansing#my art#mdzs

I thought Kim's portrait looking a little like the Rising Moon Hanafuda card was just a neat coincidence but I actually like the idea of Kim symbolising a moonrise instead of a sunrise. the Sun is the brightest star in the sky and when it's gone the Moon keeps reflecting its light. what if (if you play him as a huge communard) Harry dies just like Mazov and Kim becomes the "echo maker", the one who spreads his message
#I'm just saying words and blathering because I'm waiting for something and I need to distract myself#I like putting ideas out I don't know if they make sense#in the hanafuda card the moon is rising at sunset 🎴. they meet for a moment#disco elysium#pointless microblogging#if moralism is the blue sky communism is the night sky no?#disco elysium spoilers#sort of#let kim fix the fucking tiptop analysis he needs to do it#even if it's right because he might love machines but you can't deny he craves violence in some complex way#he needs to sit down and write his thoughts on the subject so he can think about it

hi khajiit! was wondering if i could have a general encouragement salad for our alter named bull? his pronouns are he/him, and background is he's been feeling a little blue as of late, i'll tell you the details via im because i'm unsure if he's alright with a public display of his feelings. you can still post this publicly! he's okay with references to his issues too. it's just me specifically explaining that i want to be kept private. thank you so much!!
Well met, internet traveler! (I typed that as intervet at first... sigh) I'll be sure to be gentle with what I share, and focus more on the encouragement aspects!
The full set of cards used today are:
Enchanted Blossoms Oracle (Caoimhe, xhe) by Carla Morrow
Botanical Inspirations (Adonis, he/she/they) by Lynn Araujo
You Are Amazing! (Cherie, she) by NGHTMRKT
Creative Consciousness Healing Oracle (Gracian, they/xhe) by Johanna Wright
Hanafuda Cards by... I dunno who produced these actually.

So, for this reading, I'm gonna go over each of them one by one.
We start with Enchanted Blossoms: Protection. It's understandable that you're upset, but now it's time to begin protecting yourself. This doesn't mean act rashly or harshly, but rather it's more time to tend to yourself. Give yourself a bit of extra kindness and protect your heart. You also have people behind you, who see your sadness and want to soothe it, who want to bring you peace. It's time to rely on them now. You may also now be feeling an intense urge to protect yourself from others, of whom mean you no harm. Isolation, being standoffish... it's all understandable. We all sometimes react in harsh ways when we're hurt. Just know that these things are trying to protect you, but they're not going to do so in the kind way you deserve.
Next is Creative Consciousness Healing: Nourish. Hey, you taking care of yourself? You treating yourself with kindness now? Or are you beating yourself down with a metaphorical stick? It's not fair to yourself to not treat yourself with kindness. Eat that good food, take an extra nap, do your self-care and self-kindness routine. Nourish your heart after the heartbreak you've endured. And let others nourish your heart, too.
Botanical Inspirations: Primrose. Your love may be the root of the pain right now, but that love is still so precious. Love for yourself, love for your closest, love for those who aren't your closest but still dear to you. As well, there is so much love for you. You're surrounded by love, and just because things didn't work out this one time, doesn't mean you're loved any less.
You Are Amazing!: I take responsibility for my own happiness, I do not let others have power over me. Yeah, it sucks that your plans didn't work out. It really does. But you gotta hold your head up as much as you can. You can still do that while sad and hurting. You gotta take the steps to feel better, and I know you can do so. You're strong, and you're capable.
Hanafuda: September, Sake Dish. This card is all about community and communication. Maybe rely on the person who this is all about to ask them for comfort. Just because a plan fell through doesn't mean that they don't want to support you still. And even if they can't, you're not alone. You have people behind you who want to support you, who want to raise the metaphorical sake dish and drink a cheers of how much they love you.
Overall, you are so loved. You are so cared for. I know it hurts right now and it kinda just plainly sucks, but it's time to remind yourself that you are loved, that others want to take care of you, that everything will be okay.
Thank you so much for your patience with me performing this reading.

I bought some hanafuda cards after falling down the Wikipedia hole. I got Miyako no Hana (Flowers of the Capital), Nintendo's budget brand. I was kinda tempted to get their premium Daitoryo brand with the inexplicable picture of Napoleon, but ultimately I didn't want to spend that much more for a goofy picture, and I don't think I'm gonna handle them enough that the thicker coating is worth it.

Also I think the box looks prettier! In the lower left corner is "Nintendo" spelled in kanji.
Compared to Western playing cards, these are tiny but THICK! Even knowing that beforehand I was surprised!

How do I shuffle these things???
Wikipedia says that hanafuda are descended from Portugese playing cards, but I think it's fair to say that they're a very distant relative.
There are 12 suits, identified by the flower in the illustration, hence the name hanafuda: flower cards. Each suit has four cards, and there are four ranks, but the ranks aren't distributed equally. The highest rank (hikari, lights) only exists in five suits. Meanwhile, most but not all suits have 2 cards in the lowest rank.

The five hikari, full moon, Chinese phoenix, Ono no Michikaze (or umbrella man), curtain and crane and sun.
Now I just need to learn some games!

If you’re tired of going to restaurants just to have your family stare at their phones while waiting for the food to arrive, I’d like to share a tradition my family started doing ages ago that my husband and I continue today:
We bring a tiny deck of cards with us everywhere! We started playing gin rummy, but have recently branched out to playing Koi Koi, which is a Japanese card game played with hanafuda cards (Nintendo made these cards before they made video games!). There’s so many different card games out there, and most decks will fit in your pocket. It’s way more enjoyable to go out to eat and play together than to just sit there and stare at our phones. And this works with all ages! We started with simple games when I was a kid and worked our way up.
So many people will come up to us and ask what we’re playing. I think people just forget that you don’t have to be bored together while waiting for food.

as much as I complain about affinity photo, the more I've used it the more I like it I think
I don't know that I see myself ever using it for drawing/painting over like, clip studio, mainly just because the virtual mannequins are an insane feature and csp brush system feels more intuitive, but I've gotten a bit more comfortable with making photo do my bidding when I have to touch something up and that helps a lot
right now mainly it's just frustrating that these are two separate programs and I have to choose between CSP's mannequins and the insane flexibility of photo's non-destructive image processing and compatibility with the rest of the suite when I'm trying to do something.
although that said, I also have a bit more work to do before I can fully eliminate krita from the workflow anyway, since I haven't quite figured out how to replicate my dither patterning process in either other program yet
#the whole suite is half off for black friday so I'm definitely grabbing it#it seems like both programs get cranky when asked to do fill patterns like I've been doing#on the previous poster I had to make a full page of the pattern in krita for the texture in the black shapes on either side#(which I've been informed were meant to represent willow branches in the original hanafuda card)#and then clip it into each vector shape#which was kind of an annoying extra step to have to take#just doing a fill pattern in affinity didn't seem to want to scale the pattern correctly

Got this like two weeks ago, forgot to show it off. Nintendo's Super Mario Hanafuda!

Playing cards of all shapes and forms are a particular interest of mine, so I bit the bullet and finally bought a set. Probably should have gotten a standard, non-themed set, but I'll live somehow. My greatest joy about them is that the August suit, that is to say, my birth month, gets the Luigi's Mansion theme, so Polterpup Superiority!
Tragically, none of my friends are the kinds of people who would enjoy playing Koi-Koi, but they are quite nice to look at.
Each of the twelve suits corresponds to a flower and a month of the year, so I have them arranged in descending order: January through June on the left, July through December on the right.
