Joe Goddard — Harmonics (Domino)
youtube
Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard enlarges a euphoric, body-moving electronic aesthetic on this third solo album by inviting in collaborators, and though results vary, the best of these partnerships are extraordinary.
Some of these meetups are not surprising, as when Alexis Taylor and Al Doyle turn up for “Mountains.” Here a plurality of Hot Chip join in a blippy, boppy, spirit quest that asks existential questions amid rave-y bursts of synth and drum machine. Wild Beasts’ Hayden Thorpe, too, seems like a natural choice in “Summons,” executing wild operatic arcs of melody atop grumbling synth bass and pounding keyboards. But a couple of tracks featuring Goddard discovery Findia fall flat; they’re not terrible but feel a bit like by-the-numbers dance pop.
In fact, the further Goddard gets away from what you might expect, the better these cuts work. It’s the oddball entries that catch your ear. Tom McFarland, of the UK dance-pop ensemble Jungle, flutters soulfully over eerie, trebly keyboard auras in “Ghosts,” stretching words into fluid glissandos. McFarland, perhaps reflecting the title, is a spare, spectral presence, but the chorus kicks in with a gospel weight and certainty, a triumph over frailty and doubt. The jazz saxophone player and pop collage-ist Alexander DePlume is another unexpected choice, blowing in over the glitchy flicker of “Revery” with slow, vibrato-laced tones, a florid, faintly old fashioned sound in an electronic forest. But the best of all is “Miles Away,” an unearthly mesh of the Guinean singer Falle Nioke’s resonating tones and the chiming of mbira. If there were a whole album of just this, I’d be all in, 100%.
Goddard sometimes tinged his old band’s tunes with melancholy taking the vocals, for instance, on the moody, soulful “Hungry Children,” but Harmonics reaches for positive affirmation. “Progress,” aided by Ibibio Sound System’s Eno Williams, percolates with good feelings. Its heavily effected vocals soaring over pulsing, tonally intricate Konono 1-style percussion and swinging brass. It lifts off effortlessly and takes you with it.
In the end, it feels wrong to call this album a solo record, since it is defined and elevated by the people Goddard works with. He’s been adventurous in seeking out partners, choosing some familiar ones and some that no one would have predicted, and the risks, especially, have paid off.

to my young gals (teens) on here,
what are some questions you have about college, getting older, life, makeup, etc.?
I wanted to have a little conversation aside from fanfics🫶🏽 My 20+ gals can answer too!
I recently turned 20 and I think life could’ve been a little easier if i had an older girl to ask questions or just talk to☺️

The Disability Library
I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!
As always, if there are any at all that you want me to add, please just say. I'm always looking for more!
Edit 20/10/2023: You can now suggest books using the google form at the bottom!

Puis y’a ma mère, là, à côté. J’imagine même pas la scène. Je dis : un concert. C’est idiot, non, un concert ? Mettre autant d’argent là-dedans. Je pense tout de suite à la série We are who we are. Aller voir Hayden Thorpe. Voir mes amis. Ils me manquent. Lire. Préparer mon entretien avec Christine Angot. Le temps, le temps. L’impression qu’on me le vole. Ça m’a aidé.

Seine Ausflüge in Hip Hop (When love´s out of fashion), Euro-Disco (Destiny) und in Ethno-Electronica (Miles Away) fallen hingegen deutlich ab.

‘Harmonics Remixed’: Joe Goddard's Collaborative Dance Music Reimagined

Earlier this summer, Joe Goddard released his third solo album Harmonics. Across 14 tracks of left-of-centre dance music – touching on UK garage, house, hip-hop, pop, and disco – Goddard opened the floor for a number of collaborators including Ibibio Sound Machine’s Eno Williams, UK rapper Oranje, former Wild Beasts frontman Hayden Thorpe, Joe’s Hot Chip bandmates Alexis Taylor and Al Doyle, Jungle’s Tom McFarland, Bronx-raised singer Fiorious, Guinean vocalist Falle Nioke, and UK jazz musician Alabaster DePlume amongst others. Today, Joe Goddard releases Harmonics Remixed, a remix album of Harmonics that also features a brand-new song from Joe himself, “Weave” - a brilliant track of twinkling electronica that builds to a soaring, blissful crescendo. Elsewhere on Harmonics Remixed, DJ Hilit Kolet has turned “Destiny” into a techno banger which she’s been road testing in Ibiza’s legendary club, Pikes, while Boys’ Shortshave delivered a chugging house version of the track. There are Balearic moments with the likes of Cosmodelica taking on “Follow You,” East Coast Love Affair taking inspiration from the legendary Frankie Knuckles on “Summon”, and Ray Mang stretches out “New World (Flow)” into new depths of euphoric sonics. Additionally, legendary UK house and rare-groove producer Ashely Beedle remixes “Progress” via his Black Science Orchestra band members. With Harmonics Remixed, Goddard takes the ethos of the album once step further. His openness and acceptance of individual human nuances is where Harmonics got its name from - an unbridled celebration of compassion, collaboration, and creation. Upcoming Joe Goddard dates August 23 – All Points East, London w/ LCD Soundsystem August 24 – Lost Village, Lincoln August 29 – Cala Mijas, Madrid August 30 – The Set Theatre, Kilkenny August 31 – The Workman’s Club, Dublin Sept 7 – Damp Disco, Folkestone (DJ) Sept 20 - This is Tmrw @ Hare & Hounds, Birmingham (DJ) Sept 21 - Dreamland, Margate (DJ) November 8 – King Tut’s, Glasgow November 9 – The White Hotel, Manchester November 12 – Patterns, Brighton November 13 – Colour Factory, London November 16 – Bitterzoet, Amsterdam November 17 – Bellevilloise, Paris November 18 – Botanique – Rotonde, Brussels November 20 – Kupellhalle at Silent Green, Berlin Tickets Read the full article
