Belobog Roleswap AU
So this is a small thingamaching I've been thinking about sometimes. Truthfully, I just saw some versions of the same concept and while they were certainly interesting, they weren't really my style. So, I decided to try and make my own version.
To start off, I wanna say that I gave myself a few 'rules' to keep it consistent and whatnot. Specifically, I want it to be a true roleswap, so that means no true personality changes, at least not when it's unnecessary. The roleswap should make sense, like it should be able to happen realistically. Nobody expect the people of Belobog are roleswaped.
So I'll start by who we meet first and work my way down until we get all the characters.
We meet Gepard first. He is a petty thief/vigilante that fights fragmentum in his free time, mostly because nobody is willing to offer him a job. At some point, his parents were arrested for really huge crimes (up to interpretation). Due both Gepard and Serval being over the age of eighteen, they are in legal care of Lynx.
They have trouble finding a job due to their reputation and moved to the Underworld because the rent is cheaper. Soon they are forced to steal to get by. When the Underworld was sealed off, Gepard was in the Overworld, pickpocketing, separating him from his sisters. So, for ten years, he was forced to do petty crime to survive, abandoning his "dream" of becoming a Silvermane Guard.
All that changes when the Astral Express comes to Jarillo VI. After the Supreme Guardian "becomes suspicious" of the trailblazers, Sampo comes to Gepard, offering to show him one of the secret pathways to the Underworld. In exchange Gepard has to be the guide for the Express. (Sampard/Gepo fans rejoice, a canon interaction!)
Of course Gepard accepts. So when Seele is chasing after the trailblazers, Sampo sends a few smoke bombs and, with Gepard's help, gets them to the Underworld, reuniting the Landau siblings.
Next, we see Sampo and Luka. Sampo is the Captain of the Silvermane Guards. He's still a Masked Fool but after coming to Jarilo VI and seeing that the role of the Captain is basically empty (the old one is on his last breath) he decides to take up the role.
The first impression we have of him is that he is one lazy Captain. Always slacking off and "going with the flow". He doesn't do his paperwork or listen to anyone all that much. He kinda does his own thing and bothers everyone.
He's still the only one who can travel between the Overworld and the Underworld freely, but he does so in secret, behind the Supreme Guardian's back. He is still helping the leader of Wildfire and he's still the one to plan everything behind the scenes.
We learn that he's the one who got us to the Underworld through Gepard when Seele almost kills him.
When we get back to the Overworld, he greets us and we have to hold Seele from trying to murder him. He doesn't outright reveal anything but he does tell us that more soldiers have been dying under Natasha's rule because of her orders and he's been trying everything to find a way to prevent more soldiers from losing their lives.
He helps us sneak past the Guards, lying smoothly when something happens. Soon, they reach Natasha for the Boss Fight.
Luka is the Intelligence Officer. He used to be in the frontlines but he lost his arm in a very big fight and was "demoted" to a desk job. He hates it and oftentimes does Sampo's neglected paperwork so that the Captain owes him and takes Luka to the frontlines with him as "payback", which is why we see him when we first arrive.
When the crew is back from their adventure in the Underworld and he sees Sampo helping them, he questions the Captain. Soon enough, he joins the crew in fighting the fragmentum.
Followed by those three, we meet Natasha. As an orphan, she was picked to be the Supreme Guardian instead of Cocolia, so she never got the chance to live the life she could've actually enjoyed. When we meet her, she has a faint smile on her face, her voice are gentle and her words kind. Yet, something is eerily off about her, it's just very hard to put a finger on it.
Unlike the lies the Stellaron fed Cocolia of the world dying and everyone getting to live somewhere else, in "the new world", they tell Natasha that by killing everyone, they are gonna resurrect everyone and change their biology to be able to withstand the Eternal Freeze. The cold never bothering them ever again. They say that the moment all of Belobog dies, the life of the fragmentum would be transferred to the people, so they will never again be in danger of either the monsters or the cold.
Her story ends just like Cocolia's in the original timeline, losing her life to the Stellaron and the Astral Express.
Next in line, we have Seele. We meet her during the same scene as Natasha. She doesn't really question Natasha, at least not as much as OG Bronya. Not because she's stupid, no, but because she trusts Natasha whole-heartly. She just follows orders. It doesn't help that Natasha is hiding all the orders that are made specifically to kill as many soldiers as possible.
So, later on, when she finds out that Sampo, a somewhat of a father figure to her, went against Natasha and even kidnapped Seele herself with some "criminals"? She almost mauls Gepard, the "messenger", on the spot.
Of course, she gets her reality check when she sees how bad the situation in the Underworld really is. She sees Gepard in tears after finally reuniting with his sisters after 10 years, she sees kids who never ever went to school, she sees the lack of medical supplies, she sees how dirty everything is and she sees how the fragmentum has been affecting them too.
Just like canon, her romance with Bronya still happens and soon they are back in the Overworld. After a brief conversation with Sampo, she heads off to confront Natasha, and the rest follows canon.
Following Seele, we meet Oleg. He works at the Neverwinter workshop, the adoptive father of Luka. He used to be a Captain but after openly questioning Natasha's rule, he loses his job, leaving him to tinker at the workshop.
He's somewhat aware of what Sampo is doing, which is why he humours him and follows his orders of assisting the Astral Express. He isn't present during the Boss Fight, keeping the fragmentum at bay with Luka's help, he's devastated to learn about Natasha's death though.
Up next, we have Cocolia. She's a very smiley and kind doctor that greets us when we wake up from Sampo's smoke bombs. She is, gasp, in a happy relationship with Serval.
Competent is her middle name, and she mostly follows canon. Instead of Natasha, that doctor couple adopted Cocolia, which is why she becomes the Underworld's main doctor.
Not much to say about her, so let's move on to Bronya. She stops a fight from escalating when Seele causes a scene. While she still is very kindhearted, the Underworld has roughened her edges a bit.
We get bonding scenes between her and Seele and everything pretty much follows canon expect dialogue changes. I don't have much to say about her to be honest.
Pela! She works in the fight club, not because she wants to, but because she fell into debt due to trying to get her hands on the Tales of the Winterlands. Not much about her, sadly, Hoyo wasn't too keen on given her and Luka much screen time, I fear.
She helps us deal with the mine situation that happened in canon.
Now, we get to see Serval. She has an emotional reunion with Gepard and we learn that she is a member of Wildfire. Unfortunately aside from that nothing changes canon (blame the lack of Oleg in the story not me).
Now, we meet Lynx, who has befriended Svarog, the robot acting as her father figure. While Serval isn't a fan of Svarog, she doesn't discourage her little sister from befriending him.
Since day one, she is trying to get Svarog to agree to let people pass through the Furnace Core, she yearns for the outside and tries to find and all possible ways to change Svarog's calculations.
Of course it doesn't work until we, the variable, come to the Underworld.
Lastly, we meet Hook and Clara. Both are orphans adopted by Fersman, whose a Lieutenant under Sampo's command, send by the Captain. "The Moles", we learn, is a specific group of kids that wish to join the Silvermane Guards and, Sampo, to not break their hearts, made them honorary members.
Basically, he tells them sometimes to look out for any suspicious people, maybe follow one (if the job is not at all threatening), or the super duper important mission of getting lunch for him and the other soldiers. In this instance, he used them to lead the gang to Oleg and then to Sampo himself.
And that's it! Let me know your thoughts! If you have any questions about the AU, want a more in-depth explanation or wish to see scenes written about some of the things that happened feel free to ask!

Ooh, your fic for Sahsrau was super fun to read!!! And honwstly its cooking ideas in my brain about saghsr!!
But quick question: How do you think does it feels for the characters to be guided by us? Do you think they get tired from running across maps, or do they just somehow have infinite stamina without being tired as we, the player, do? (I'd feel super guilty if it wasn't the case and they just suffered from crippling exhaustion but prompted to push on despite it ( ´△`))
Thank you for the kind words!! I actually had to think about this for a while...
Hmm.... well, in my au, their newfound devotion to the Aeon of Unity basically makes them sort of forget that they have to rest, but no worries, their Aeon always lets them rest and recover from all the running and fighting. Such a merciful being indeed, though some of them find unity in the suffering, all for their Aeon, i suppose.
As for how they feel.... groups like the Astral Express and the Knights of Beauty are quite welcoming of the Aeon, mostly due to their lack of one. Some of the knights even wax poetic about how the Aeon was fated to bless and protect them after their Aeons passing. While the Loufu, and the people of Jarillo-VI think of them as a helpful and supportive god. The Genius society is still trying to figure out what this new Aeon is.
The stellaron hunters, though.... let's just say they are the most devoted ones. Elio, especially as destiny's slave and seeing the future the new Aeon will lead them to.

A Trail from the Stars
~Synopsis: The Astral Express traveled across the stars and stumbled upon an anomaly finding their way to you, one whose presence emits that of great power
~Note: I'm not that far into the story yet, I'm still in Belobog and have yet to bring Serval into the main story again, so the story might not be on point.
Tumblr media
You slept for some time now, you don't know how long but it was definitely a long time at this point. You were found with an unknown planet, lying on a bed of chains made with unfamiliar material bound to your limbs, and prying them out took its precious time.
You were nursed back to health by the Astral Express Crew but you still could not leave your bed as your legs were still too weak. So all you could do was wait for someone to come talk to you.
One who came often was a girl named March 7th, she talked about anything and everything she found along her journey with some pictures in store, although you found her to be "too energetic" whenever she visited, she still made you feel better.
There's also a man she comes with sometimes, he calls himself Dan Heng, you found him comforting and he seems to know a lot whenever you ask him things
Another person who visited you often was a man named Welt, he was stern and serious, but also gentle when he was taking care of you, like whenever he changed your bandages or applied some medicine but you can't help but wonder about his past, it makes you feel as if you knew him before, but you'll never know until he tells the truth.
Then there's Himeko, everyone seems to respect her and she seems fun too but she always looks busy.
Not long after your arrival, another person was recruited into the Astral Express, Stelle/ Caelus, she was a little weird but you two get along the most as a lot of your sense of humour aligns with each other, you found that weird since you don't remember talking to anyone else in the express like that, but oh well.
You're able to walk and go around the Express after some time then you reach Jarillo-V where March, Dan Heng, and Stelle/Caelus set out to clear the stellaron while you stay behind... "Am I a burden to you guys?" you asked Welt who was changing your bandages again with your head hung low.
"No, you are not a burden [name]. I'm sure that when you heal, you can also tag along with March and the others, as well as not being stuck in bed" he reassured you before finishing up.
You only sighed as this was what you expected his answer to be, just like everyone else, only in different words.
~~~
I'm so done with this rotting in my drafts, like everything else in there.
Yuuki and The Trailblaze
The path of the Trailblaze is severely weakened due to Akivili's disappearance, held aloft by the Nameless traveling aboard the Astral Express. With no Aeon to bless anyone, the notion of an Emanator was far-fetched. How could anyone be blessed by an Aeon that was presumed dead?
Long ago, the Aeon of the Traiblaze befriended the Anemo Sovereign upon visiting their planet. The two became so close that the dragon was offered a place at the Aeon's side, a ticket to join them on their journey across the stars. Due to prior obligations and promises, the dragon was forced to turn down the offer. Instead, the two promised to meet again, to journey together under new circumstances with little to no previous ties.
"I understand. Then perhaps this little blessing will guide you to me when the time is right. No matter what form you take, you will be a welcome member of the Astral Express."
Tumblr media
Yuuki is the result of that promise. A human born with the dragon's soul, blessed by the Trailblaze. She embodies the concept of Trailblaze and Freedom as much as their respective progenitors, if not more. This manifests in a few ways that Yuuki isn't even aware of.
Most notably her impulse to explore and discover, which influenced both her early career choices and her recent life choices. This isn't limited to locales but experiences and people too. Yuuki is open to differing paths and opinions, even going as far as to tread on these for new experiences and connections.
Another aspect of this blessing is Yuuki's closeness with the Trailblaze itself. The boons that Nameless possess such as their adaptability are much more potent for Yuuki. For instance, her immunity to the cold on Jarillo VI compared to the resistance of the others. Pom Pom, another being tied closely with the Trailblaze quickly formed a bond with Yuuki. Despite her directly damaging the train upon arrival, Pom Pom was uncharacteristically open to apologies. Even stranger, Yuuki was a great help in repairing what she broke, despite having never seen anything like the Express before.
Finally is her power. Like some other Emanators, Yuuki holds an incredible amount of power, but unlike the others, she is unaware of it. She doesn't know of the promise made long ago, nor is she aware of what she is. Thanks to her experiences with her fellow Nameless and certain members of the Genuis Society, she has been able to piece together a bit of this lost story. But practically, she is not tapping into much of the power she was blessed with; instead, she is mainly utilizing the power of the Sovereign, something she was born with.
John has a Chat with a Counterpart
John sat down across from the tired looking woman who seemed bundled into her great coat, the woman looking up only slightly before passing a pot of black recaff over to him from which he poured out a cups worth, John smiling as he says "Hello Brigid, how are your boys and girls doing?"
Brigid sighs before grabbing the pot and drinking directly from it then setting it down and saying "Doing well you old reprobate... my sisters are still fighting about how they each do things, Briģ is all about making her killing into a art form that would make even those purple and pink twats horrified while Brigit is all about killing her foes quickly and efficiently... my second, Aed, is still a bastard of the highest order since the time he got us kicked out of a Hive by sleeping with one of the Governor's wives, and I'm surprised no one has murdered him yet."
John had been nodding along with a commiserating look on his face, the man drinking his recaff every so often, a laugh slipping free as he says "Well... I could send a few of my Wolves your way, they still remember you fondly after that dust-up you helped us out in back on Jarillo V."
Hiiiiiii
I just wanted to warn you about the incoming spam tomorrow. I just finished Luofu trailblazer quests and now I am all ready to binge on your HSR works 👻
I finally finished it.
I am yet to play the character story quests and world quests.
But hear me out. Is it just me or did the Luofu quests feel really really rushed? Like I felt it got the Inazuma treatment. Like before one storyline could establish itself and sink in, we were already involved in a bunch of other things and other plots. Like I felt that they had a lot of ideas but had to string it together to form a singular plot.
Idk, I feel like I liked Jarillo story better as it felt well paced but I didn’t connect with any Jarillo characters. But with Luofu, I didn’t like the story but I liked the characters (cough cough Jing Yuan and Luocha (yeah I know he’s evil)). Man I went into Luofu quest thinking I’ll be a blade simp but ended up being a Jing Yuan simp instead. I am yet to play Blade’s quest (Kafka called me to help them but it’s literally 4am rn and I am like, Blade you will have to wait)
But long story short. I am going to be binging on your fics tomorrow and I am sooooo excited 🥰🥰🥰
RAHHHH NAT AM BLUSHING SO HARD GRRR i just woke up nngh good morning
Tumblr media
also! for your question
you're kind of right? about the luofu arc, but honestly, it became less confusing BECAUSE of the detectives, the people who theorize and the overall fanarts/theories of the fandom who made the plot make more sense
if you're confused on some parts, i would love to indulge you in what i have information gathered (e.g. main points, species, jing yuan/blade/dan heng/jingliu relationship and things about the xianzhou luofu)
but! since im also done with the inazuma storyline, i can honestly say that i get what you mean? that the hyv didn't point out and explain too much about you know... stuff (like why blade is so damn obsessed with dan heng, more shit about the stellaron hunters n etc, aeons even!) but thats why fandoms exist! i dont even research much because i dont have time, but once i stumble upon a lore/fanart/or even drabble about something related to hsr, i just piece things myself, that and im a sucker for lore so i try to really understand things!
and the kafka companion quest
i found it funny and so- idk it makes you go blush BECAUSE of kafka, i dont wanna spoil but i hope you enjoy that specific quest! because it tells details about kafka's powers + we get a proper interaction with her finally (so i got to assess her whole personality n such for headcannons, example, in my herrscher of death!reader x hsr fic!)
oh and
i imagine you are swamped with irl things, juggling/grinding hsr and genshin, so starting honkai impact 3rd... it'll be so overwhelming for you (since i am, still trying to finish events) but if YOU decide to join in the honkai impact 3rd train as well, i will gladly, GLADLY help you and guide you with whatever you need!
hi3 is like, more combative, heavy HEAVY lore and we have characters over 50,000+ years old lmao, and actually, if you're familiar with the whole imaginary tree concept in hsr, you will eventually understand why ive decided to plan a honkai impact + hsr crossover series (because hyv makes it makes sense)
and with that
CANT WAIT TO HELP YOU IN ANY WAY YOU CAN ABOUT HSR!!!
and thank you hehe, i'm still revamping the nanook fanfic + creating multiple banners for our hsr men (but look at me create banners lovingly for scaramouche lmao)
OH AND since you're a jing yuan admirer, i assume you'll love my jing yuan works; "imperfections you loathe" and "a fourth wall break from the general" which! are in my hsr menu in my pinned 😌 i'm so excited that you caught up in hsr hehe
Please elaborate on all your sampo headcanons, I'm very interested!!
Hello!!!!!!!!! So, elaborating on my headcannons about our favorite conman business man, here's an elaboration on some of them:
Has multiple hideouts all across Belobog, all well hidden
So I believe that most of his hideouts are in dangerous areas since it's less likely to be found out. Like mentioned I believe that he has one far out in the snow plains, but I have thoughts on other locations as well.
He definitely has one in Rivet Town. He probably found an abandoned apartment complex with a great view of the town yet still well hidden when looking out the window so he's not worried about his safety. It's on the third floor to avoid the fragmentum getting to him. He would have a phonograph in that apartment and it's probably the one where he spends his tinkering with his bombs or other trinkets that interest him plus fake relics and other junk he sells.
If I had to find a vibe to describe his Rivet Town apartment, I would say it's where you go for a cup of wine as a slow song is playing on the phonograph like 'Losing My Mind' by Missio, 'April Fool' by Dean Fujioka or 'Out of Control' by She Wants Revenge. It's also where you go when you have a stab wound or something and don't want to bother Natasha, just sit there in the warmly lit living room as you stich yourself, listening to the soft buzzing of the lightbulbs.
He has an apartment in the Administrative District for his persona Madam Poisson (the only one his pays taxes for to avoid suspicion). It's very clean, with only artificial 'homey' stuff so nobody questions it at first glance (like when Silvermane Guards pass through to inform of new policies or asking about suspects like that wig accident). In general, it's the one he spends less time in, only to clean it up so it isn't dusty, to crash after a tiring trip/business venture, or where he invites people as Poisson.
Overall it's the most impersonal hideout, one that is only a front. He doesn't have anything incriminating there, not even wigs. It's the one he feels the least safe in which is why, if he can, he avoids it.
His other hideouts are pretty one note, just the food he needs, a bed, hygiene necessities and stuff like that scattered all over Belobog. He mostly uses them to hide from the Silvermane guards, make merchandise, ponder schemes and stuff like that.
2. He has a white pet snake called Apollo and it always is somewhere on his body
The snake itself is not from Belobog, it's from a planet he visited before coming to Jarillo VI. Actually, I headcannon that there are no snakes in Jarillo VI. I believe a lot of animals went extinct during the eternal freeze, so Belobogians haven't seen a lot of animals, like snakes, birds, bunnies, cats, dogs, etc. And that's why Gepard froze when he heard a hiss from Sampo's breast pocket. It's quite literally the first time he has heard that sound.
The reason Apollo is always on Sampo's person is because Sampo acts like a heat source for it so it doesn't freeze.
3. He's technically not human, he was created by Aha because THEY wanted to see what would happen if a person just spawned in a random planet
I like the idea of Sampo being a creation of Elation and not being a fan of that. The way he was 'born' was by Aha trying to replicate a human and shove a bunch of unused, unfinished scripts, confetti and music. Then, THEY gave Sampo the ability shapeshift and other shit like that and just left him on a random planet out of curiosity.
I imagine that he wasn't an Emanator at first, he was just a creation of an Aeon. There's a bit of my own thoughts on his backstory, something big happens and boom!, he understands the true meaning of Elation yet with his own twist to it and becomes and Emanator.
4. Has interacted with Robin once in a random planet
I like the idea that Sampo, for all his flashiness, likes to stay away from drama or the spotlight. And when he sees Robin try and do the same he helps her get away from the paparazzi and they spend some time on a random rooftop, talking about their beliefs and ideologies. He never tells her his name and she doesn't ask. They just talk and then part ways.
Physicists measure a key aspect of superconductivity in “magic-angle” graphene
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/physicists-measure-a-key-aspect-of-superconductivity-in-magic-angle-graphene/
Physicists measure a key aspect of superconductivity in “magic-angle” graphene
Tumblr media
Superconducting materials are similar to the carpool lane in a congested interstate. Like commuters who ride together, electrons that pair up can bypass the regular traffic, moving through the material with zero friction.
But just as with carpools, how easily electron pairs can flow depends on a number of conditions, including the density of pairs that are moving through the material. This “superfluid stiffness,” or the ease with which a current of electron pairs can flow, is a key measure of a material’s superconductivity.
Physicists at MIT and Harvard University have now directly measured superfluid stiffness for the first time in “magic-angle” graphene — materials that are made from two or more atomically thin sheets of graphene twisted with respect to each other at just the right angle to enable a host of exceptional properties, including unconventional superconductivity.
This superconductivity makes magic-angle graphene a promising building block for future quantum-computing devices, but exactly how the material superconducts is not well-understood. Knowing the material’s superfluid stiffness will help scientists identify the mechanism of superconductivity in magic-angle graphene.
The team’s measurements suggest that magic-angle graphene’s superconductivity is primarily governed by quantum geometry, which refers to the conceptual “shape” of quantum states that can exist in a given material.
The results, which are reported today in the journal Nature, represent the first time scientists have directly measured superfluid stiffness in a two-dimensional material. To do so, the team developed a new experimental method which can now be used to make similar measurements of other two-dimensional superconducting materials.
“There’s a whole family of 2D superconductors that is waiting to be probed, and we are really just scratching the surface,” says study co-lead author Joel Wang, a research scientist in MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE).
The study’s co-authors from MIT’s main campus and MIT Lincoln Laboratory include co-lead author and former RLE postdoc Miuko Tanaka as well as Thao Dinh, Daniel Rodan-Legrain, Sameia Zaman, Max Hays, Bharath Kannan, Aziza Almanakly, David Kim, Bethany Niedzielski, Kyle Serniak, Mollie Schwartz, Jeffrey Grover, Terry Orlando, Simon Gustavsson, Pablo Jarillo-Herrero, and William D. Oliver, along with Kenji Watanabe and Takashi Taniguchi of the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan.
Magic resonance
Since its first isolation and characterization in 2004, graphene has proven to be a wonder substance of sorts. The material is effectively a single, atom-thin sheet of graphite consisting of a precise, chicken-wire lattice of carbon atoms. This simple configuration can exhibit a host of superlative qualities in terms of graphene’s strength, durability, and ability to conduct electricity and heat.
In 2018, Jarillo-Herrero and colleagues discovered that when two graphene sheets are stacked on top of each other, at a precise “magic” angle, the twisted structure — now known as magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, or MATBG — exhibits entirely new properties, including superconductivity, in which electrons pair up, rather than repelling each other as they do in everyday materials. These so-called Cooper pairs can form a superfluid, with the potential to superconduct, meaning they could move through a material as an effortless, friction-free current.
“But even though Cooper pairs have no resistance, you have to apply some push, in the form of an electric field, to get the current to move,” Wang explains. “Superfluid stiffness refers to how easy it is to get these particles to move, in order to drive superconductivity.”
Today, scientists can measure superfluid stiffness in superconducting materials through methods that generally involve placing a material in a microwave resonator — a device which has a characteristic resonance frequency at which an electrical signal will oscillate, at microwave frequencies, much like a vibrating violin string. If a superconducting material is placed within a microwave resonator, it can change the device’s resonance frequency, and in particular, its “kinetic inductance,” by an amount that scientists can directly relate to the material’s superfluid stiffness.
However, to date, such approaches have only been compatible with large, thick material samples. The MIT team realized that to measure superfluid stiffness in atomically thin materials like MATBG would require a new approach.
“Compared to MATBG, the typical superconductor that is probed using resonators is 10 to 100 times thicker and larger in area,” Wang says. “We weren’t sure if such a tiny material would generate any measurable inductance at all.”
A captured signal
The challenge to measuring superfluid stiffness in MATBG has to do with attaching the supremely delicate material to the surface of the microwave resonator as seamlessly as possible.
“To make this work, you want to make an ideally lossless — i.e., superconducting — contact between the two materials,” Wang explains. “Otherwise, the microwave signal you send in will be degraded or even just bounce back instead of going into your target material.”
Will Oliver’s group at MIT has been developing techniques to precisely connect extremely delicate, two-dimensional materials, with the goal of building new types of quantum bits for future quantum-computing devices. For their new study, Tanaka, Wang, and their colleagues applied these techniques to seamlessly connect a tiny sample of MATBG to the end of an aluminum microwave resonator. To do so, the group first used conventional methods to assemble MATBG, then sandwiched the structure between two insulating layers of hexagonal boron nitride, to help maintain MATBG’s atomic structure and properties.
“Aluminum is a material we use regularly in our superconducting quantum computing research, for example, aluminum resonators to read out aluminum quantum bits (qubits),” Oliver explains. “So, we thought, why not make most of the resonator from aluminum, which is relatively straightforward for us, and then add a little MATBG to the end of it? It turned out to be a good idea.”
“To contact the MATBG, we etch it very sharply, like cutting through layers of a cake with a very sharp knife,” Wang says. “We expose a side of the freshly-cut MATBG, onto which we then deposit aluminum — the same material as the resonator — to make a good contact and form an aluminum lead.”
The researchers then connected the aluminum leads of the MATBG structure to the larger aluminum microwave resonator. They sent a microwave signal through the resonator and measured the resulting shift in its resonance frequency, from which they could infer the kinetic inductance of the MATBG.
When they converted the measured inductance to a value of superfluid stiffness, however, the researchers found that it was much larger than what conventional theories of superconductivity would have predicted. They had a hunch that the surplus had to do with MATBG’s quantum geometry — the way the quantum states of electrons correlate to one another.
“We saw a tenfold increase in superfluid stiffness compared to conventional expectations, with a temperature dependence consistent with what the theory of quantum geometry predicts,” Tanaka says. “This was a ‘smoking gun’ that pointed to the role of quantum geometry in governing superfluid stiffness in this two-dimensional material.”
“This work represents a great example of how one can use sophisticated quantum technology currently used in quantum circuits to investigate condensed matter systems consisting of strongly interacting particles,” adds Jarillo-Herrero.
This research was funded, in part, by the U.S. Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering.
Man wouldn't it be interesting if there was a Genshin character in Star Rail, but they were an alternate version like Acheron, from a doomed Teyvat(or whatever the actual planet is called) because there was no traveler to help them from whatever was happening? And everything is just fucked down on the planet like you can read it on the relics with Acheron's?
Mondsadt was destroyed by the cursed Dvalin, who is successfully under the Abyss' control
Liyue and Inazuma didn't have any show of humans standing up for themselves so the grip of the gods tightened further on the nation. (Osial was taken care of by Rex Lapis and the vision hunt decree was successful)
The false god was born in Sumeru and Fontaine actually drowned, leaving the Archon alone on her throne
Or something different, like a Stellaron infected the planet and it was irreparably changed like Jarillo VI, or it was attacked by the Anti-Matter Legion or the Swarm, and there are a few survivors far and between
And the character would be someone high up like the other sibling, still looking for their lost twin. Lumine looking for Aether, since Genshin pushes him as the 'canon' one.
Graphene and the Quantum Hall Effect: A Window into Topological Phases
Graphene, a two-dimensional sheet of carbon atoms, has revolutionized the world of quantum physics. Its unique electronic properties make it an outstanding material for exploring the quantum Hall effect, which serves as a window into the fascinating topological phases of matter.
The quantum Hall effect was first discovered in the 1980s and is characterized by the quantization of Hall conductance in integer multiples of a fundamental constant. In graphene, this effect manifests in a unique way: electrons behave like massless Dirac fermions, leading to a half-integer quantum Hall effect. This anomaly arises from graphene's linear energy-momentum relationship, distinguishing it from traditional materials.
Another remarkable phenomenon in graphene is the fractional quantum Hall effect. In this case, electrons and magnetic flux quanta form composite quasiparticles with fractional charge. These quasiparticles exhibit collective behavior described by fractional quantum numbers. The fractional quantum Hall effect in graphene is particularly robust and can even occur under certain conditions without an external magnetic field.
Graphene provides a unique platform for exploring topological phases. These phases are characterized by topological invariants that are independent of the microscopic details of the material. The quantum Hall effect in graphene serves as a prototype for such phases, demonstrating how topological order can manifest in physical systems.
The extraordinary properties of graphene open up numerous application possibilities. In metrology, graphene could serve as a resistance standard because it can exhibit the quantum Hall effect at room temperature. Furthermore, insights gained from research on graphene and the quantum Hall effect could lead to the development of new electronic components based on topological effects.
A New Era in Physics: How Charles Kane Redefined Our Understanding of Matter
In the ever-evolving field of condensed matter physics, Charles Kane stands out as a transformative figure whose work has ushered in a new era of understanding. His pioneering research on topological phases of matter has not only expanded the boundaries of theoretical physics but also laid the groundwork for future technological innovations.
Kane's journey into the realm of topological phases began with his exploration of the quantum Hall effect. This phenomenon, observed in two-dimensional electron systems, is characterized by the precise quantization of Hall conductance. Kane's contributions helped deepen the theoretical understanding of this effect, setting the stage for his groundbreaking work on topological insulators. Topological insulators represent a novel state of matter, exhibiting insulating behavior in their bulk while supporting conducting states on their surfaces or edges. These surface states are protected by time-reversal symmetry, making them robust against impurities and defects. Kane, along with collaborators, predicted and characterized these materials theoretically before their experimental confirmation. This discovery has opened new avenues in spintronics and holds promise for quantum computing applications.
Beyond insulators, Kane's research extends to topological semimetals and superconductors. In topological semimetals, unique electronic properties arise from band structures where conduction and valence bands touch at discrete points. Topological superconductors host exotic quasiparticles known as Majorana fermions, which are of great interest for topological quantum computation due to their potential use in creating qubits that are inherently protected from decoherence.
The impact of Charles Kane's work is reflected in numerous accolades, including the Dirac Prize and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. These honors underscore his significant contributions to advancing our understanding of topological phases and their potential applications. Kane's current research focuses on exploring topological phases in strongly interacting systems. This frontier aims to understand how particle interactions can lead to new emergent phenomena beyond those described by non-interacting theories. Such studies promise to discover novel materials with unprecedented properties that could revolutionize technology.
Charles Kane's contributions have fundamentally redefined our understanding of matter, particularly through his work on topological phases. His insights continue to inspire new research directions and hold the potential to drive technological advancements in quantum computing and beyond. As researchers delve deeper into the rich landscape of topological phases, Kane's pioneering work remains a guiding light in this exciting field.
