You and Mattheo have been attending Hogwarts together your entire lives, however things take a turn in your fourth year when you finally say something to the rowdy Slytherin boy. Ever since that day two years ago you have been ‘rivals’. Quite unfortunately for you there’s been a few complications in your plans of avoiding actual contact with him.

It had been a week and Mattheo hadn’t been to any classes nor had he been seen by any of his friends. “Pst. Rosy cheeks” Looking up you saw Theo’s green eyes staring at you “Where’s your potions partner” pointing his head towards Matt’s empty spot. “Aren’t you his friend”you responded bluntly, “Well yeah but I don’t know where he is, figured you might” He shrugged going back to his seat.

It was rather nice being alone actually, you had began to gather your potion supplies and already gotten Antimony from Snape as he said “It was too dangerous to let you all get more than the needed amount”

Surprisingly Snape was allowing most students( “If I deem adequate enough”- his words ) to partake in looking for shrivlefig leaves in the forbidden forest. Only if we went with our partners. You were excited till he let that last part mutter out of his cruel mouth staring directly at you. You got up swiftly with a mission to get Snape to let you go alone.. which immediately failed. “Find your partner or don’t go and lose your chance, your choice”.

Walking around the castle felt useless. It’s not like you knew where he would usually hang out, and if his friend couldn’t find him, how could you? On the verge of giving up you steadily walked to the great hall for a last minute dinner, to your surprise, disappointment, and unfortunately gladly Mattheo sat toying with his food looking rather gloomy.

“We have to go to the forbidden forest and find the shrivlefig leaves, Snape is only giving us this one time so get up and suck up your ego” You huffed sitting down in front of him harshly. His head slowly raised and he held an unamused expression “Go do it yourself dork” He brought his attention back to his food and you did the only thing you could think of “If you don’t go with me i’ll tell Snape you sneak off at night to smoke on the astronomy tower”- His facial expression suddenly dropped and you could tell you got him “Yeah, i’m not dumb i know about it” you rolled your eyes and you could visibly see his jaw tense, “Fucking fine. Let’s go then”

Though you could tell he was pissed you got up following his heavy footsteps. “Slow down” You complained trying to catch up to his unnecessary speed walking, “How about keep up. Nark” He seemingly got faster and you were practically jogging. “Look I would’ve done it myself if i could just stop being like this till the potion is brewed then we don’t have to fucking speak again if you want for all i care but you and i both need this grade and you know it” You stood your ground awaiting his response and after a stifle of silence he huffed “Fine. But never again.” He continued walking yet slowed his speed much to your gratitude not that he’d know that.

after a long breezy awkward walk you and mattheo stood in front of the grueling forest where you could hear a mixture of random creatures and other students shouting to their partners. “where should we start?” you spoke looking at the forest left to right, “let’s just go this way” mattheo pointed to the right and began walking. “wait.” he paused “what do shrivelfig trees look like again” he stood thinking and you rolled your eyes; how could this be the guy you rival against. “unlike you i know what i’m looking for. let’s go” not waiting for him you took back off walking making sure to look around for the plant.

“you could at least tell me the damn color” he scoffed looking around as if he knew what he was searching for. “well if you payed attention in herbology you’d know shrivelfig is a fruit in which the leaves grow inside of dumbass.. oh and they’re purple” rolling your eyes again at his incompetence. “what the fuck kind of fruit is named shrivelfig” he added ignoring your insult making you laugh under your breath not letting him notice. “also they’re like tiny so look at the floor not at the sky like you seem to be doing” looking him up and down questionably as he literally stared up into the sky.

“have you never looked at pretty clouds before, merlin have a heart woman” he scoffed turning his gaze down to the floor scanning for the purple plant. ignoring him you did the same, searching the floor for any sign of shrivelfig. “I SWEAR THIS IS A UNICORN HAIR” mattheo yelled running over to you holding a long coarse shimmering hair, you wouldn’t have believed him unless the proof wasn’t literally right in front of your eyes and your mouth dropped. “THATS SO COOL” you screamed in excitement just as he did.

“what do we even do with it” he questioned turning the hair back and forth examining it. “uhh ask me that when snape starts including lessons on what to do with unicorn hairs” you chuckled still in awe at the fact that this was a real unicorns hair. “this is so cool.., can i hold it” you asked reaching for the strand, “woah, woah, woah, i found it not you” he replied hastily quickly pulling the hair up in the air far from your reach.

“all i wanted to do was hold it for a second” you huffed, rolling your eyes and crossing your arms. he stood for a moment thinking, “fine but you gotta say the magic word” he winked. his wink sent chills down your spine and not because it was hot but because it annoyed you that he thinks he’s hot. “first of all ew. don’t wink at me. second i would do anything to hold a unicorn hair no dignity needed, so please let me hold it” rolling your eyes for what seemed like the millionth time because of him you opened your hand up awaiting the hair.

“having no dignity over one strand of unicorn hair is actually insane” he gave you a questionable look placing the hair in your hand. you finally were able to feel it and it was weirdly thick but so soft, the light shining through the clouds and trees were causing the hair to glisten all sorts of rainbow colors and it was mesmerizing. “don’t get too comfortable holding it, it’s still mine” mattheo spoke up taking the hair back from your hands without warning.

“we should probably look for the plant again i guess” you shrugged continuing to walk around cautiously searching. after what felt like hours but in reality was only twenty minutes of walking you spotted a purple peeking plant “FINALLY!” you shouted rushing towards it kneeling down. brushing away the fallen leaves around it from the nearby trees you carefully plucked the plant from the ground. “how are you not even gonna let me see you take it out” mattheo breathed out trying to catch his breath after jogging over to you, “whoops” you shrugged sarcastically before getting up.

“anyways you can hold it” you said handing the plant to him looking down at your already purple stained hands, “oh by the way it stains so watch out” you added after he already took it from you. “why the fuck would you give it to me then” he scoffed trying to look at his purple covered hands making you laugh. “this isn’t even funny” he shook his head trying to hold back a smile of his own.

once you both brought the recently acquired plant back to snapes classroom you had to figure out the steps to harvest the sheivelfig leaves, “we could just study in the library” you suggested as the two of you made your way back to the slytherin common room “there’s too many people and it’s never even actually quiet, plus it’s boring in there and smells like dust” he blatantly responded

“well where else are we going to study mattheo” you looked at him annoyed awaiting his response “i always study in the astronomy tower but that’s just my preference” he shrugged “you called the library boring..” you questioned making him roll his eyes, “have you never seen stars is that not more entertaining than old books, not to mention actual fresh air and not thousand year old dust and old man fart”.

“someone’s passionate” you mocked chuckling “how would we even get up there it’s out of bounds after seven, and also wouldn’t it be too dark?” you added. “lights exist you know plus they never even go up there at night too many stairs for those lazy fucks” he chuckled at his own joke

“i mean i guess we could go right now if we got some books from the library” shrugging looking up at him he actually looked semi surprised “you know i didn’t think you’d actually agree but yeah we can go right now but only if you let me smoke” he gave you a smirk and it cringed you out, “i don’t want to smell cigarettes thanks” you rolled your eyes, “actually im talking miss mary j.. but to each their own” he shrugged continuing on “how do you even get that at school” you stopped him and you were lying if you didn’t say you were intrigued.

“that’s for me to know and you to never find out” he patted your head and kept walking. “ugh fine. let’s just get the books and go before it gets any later and we’re caught” you rolled your eyes following him.

a very long and grueling quiet walk later you and mattheo made your way up the astronomy tower tiptoeing making sure no steps squeaked beneath. a sigh of relief left you once you made it to the top and could be carefree. “it’s pretty dark already” you said looking out at all the stars already peeking through the night sky.

“that’s why i have this lantern up here” mattheo spoke pointing his wand towards it and lighting it up. it was just enough for you two to see if close enough, “do you have another one? it would be kinda hard to both look at books” you questioned walking towards him, “no, but i’ll smoke a bit and you get started i need to get my brain ready for this shit” he headed towards the railings before sitting against the wall and lighting his joint.

“okay i guess” you huffed opening the book and immediately smelling the substance he was inhaling. “that stuff smells like skunk” making a face you looked at him and he chuckled lowly “i guess i got some good shit then.”

“and where exactly did you get that again..?” you pressed again for some answers because you were genuinely curious “come on i won’t tell” you shrugged, he looked over at you inhaling smoke “and why exactly should i trust the one who said she’d tell on me for said smoking” exhaling as he spoke questioning you. “look you get we needed to get this done and im not going to tell him anything he’s annoying. besides we’d both lose house points” you tried reasoning with him.

“still not convinced ms.goodietwoshoes.” he rolled his eyes looking away. “what if i smoke some of it too then i really couldn’t tell anyone” you suggested, not really sure why you were so interested in knowing how he got it he cocked his eyebrow at you standing up and walking to you bending down in front of you. “you have to get high and i’ll tell you.” he smirked bringing the joint to your lips.

you hesitantly looked between him and the joint deciding your fate as you slowly inhaled looking into his eyes. immediately exhaling with a huge cough you folded over into you into a coughing fit, trying to catch your breath you began laughing “are you good damn and why are you laughing now” he pulled you up and moved your hair from your face, still laughing you caught your breath and finally spoke “i’ve never done that before and then i thought about how im literally doing it with the person i hate and like that’s crazy” you shrugged.

“you’re very interesting y/n.” he shook his head bringing the joint to his own lips and taking yet another long hit. “do i need to show you how to properly hit this shit because i don’t know what that was before” he laughed thinking about your failed attempt and you rolled your eyes throat still kind of hurting. “i guess you can”.

“okay so like you could either inhale it into your mouth first and then slowly take it to your throat or you could literally inhale the smoke just straight up, but i think you should try and hold it first might be easier” he brought it back to your lips and you tried doing as he said, slowly inhaling and holding it in your mouth, the taste was earthy and was grossing you out. “okay now start taking it in” he reminded you and you did just that slowly inhaling and then blowing it all out, faint line of smoke coming out.

“see much better” he sarcastically applauded you and you laughed “i think im already feeling it” giggling looking at him you couldn’t believe you were smoking with your enemy. you also couldn’t believe how pretty his eyes looked in the moonlight.. wait what.

trying to do everything you could to forget the thought you just had you brought your mind back to the question he was supposed to answer. “you never did say where you got this from you know, a deals a deal mattheo” you poked at him and he rolled his eyes. “literally everyone knows you can get this shit from hufflepuff y/n” he acted as if that was just public information “who the hell is everyone i’m not everyone” you threw your hands up dramatically.

"my god woman take another hit" he sighed out heavily handing you the joint, you didn't question it and just took a hit knowing you did want, and need it. "i admit that does make sense about it hufflepuff" you laughed at the thought of it. "yeah yeah quit hogging my shit" he took his joint back taking a few more hits before handing it back to you “i expect you to be high as fuck so keep on smoking" he patted your head turning his attention to the forgotten books you should be studying.

"i can't even find the page about this bullshit why is there seven thousand eight hundred and forty things in this fucking index" he roughly searched for the S category. "great now to find the fucking word shrivelfig.. great"… ignoring him you kept smoking feeling a buzzing sensation all over your body you felt more free than ever. though your eyes were suddenly quite heavy you only wanted to fight the sensation of closing them. "it feels so good out here" exhaling deeply you brought in your atmosphere admiring the twinkling stars.

"do you ever just stare out and like think to yourself about the world just being stopped for a moment" turning your head to look at him he was reading the book until he looked up, "all the time." he simply stated bringing his attention back. "it says we just have to wait for it to try out and we have to collect them after that because they're inside of the flower" he huffed laying back onto the wood floor. "how long is that going to take?" you questioned annoyed "it said one to two weeks" he sighed. "this potion is taking forever" complaining rolling your eyes.

"i guess we should get back to the dorms now"

Once more into Milwaukee, old friends. That is said with true anticipation, as I’m looking forward to the Mid Winter Convention and also all of all the wonderful people who go to it and run it – including almost all of our Onyx Path Monday Meeting crew.

I also look forward to it with a tidal wave of nostalgia, as Milwaukee, and the Hilton where Mid Winter is held, was also where White Wolf booked our Gen-Con rooms and our parties in the years after Vampire first came out. So there’s a lot of overlay of memories as I walk (stagger) through the hotel and downtown.

Now, as to what we’re doing there now?

First, we’ll be officially announcing four projects that are on our plate this year at our Onyx Path Q&A Social on Friday. From there we’ll also talk about them on the Onyx Pathcast live from Mid Winter, and on our social media. So even if you miss the Q&A, and it’s been sold out for quite some time, keep and eye and an ear out (and maybe an arm, YA lit readers) and you’ll hear about them.

Thursday features panels and seminars for folks wanting to get into or do better in the TTRPG creation biz, and we have a bunch of our folks helping out there; from Eddy Webb’s Developer Bootcamp, to Matt McElroy and myself sitting in on the Kickstarter tips session in the morning. There are freelancer panels with a bunch of our, well, freelancers, like Crystal Mazur and Danielle Lauzon, that are also happening throughout the con.

In fact, on Saturday, there’s a V5 Chicago By Night panel with Matthew and a host of writers from the project that should help illuminate the darkness. Not of a vampire’s soul, but of why Mike Hollywood wrote about particular Chicago landmarks – that sort of thing.

We’ve also got folks demoing and playtesting, with a few secret playtests being run, throughout the convention.

Let’s back it up, and I’ll talk about Wednesday, which is our all-day Onyx Path Summit where the Monday Meeting crew will be reviewing 2019 and looking towards the next couple of years.

Some of that is just stuff we have to do like budgeting, but the vast majority will be more process and project focused brainstorming.

Some of that will be to review the notes from the team that I’ve posted these last 3 weeks. We’ll look mostly at what we can improve, but we’ll definitely add in the good stuff we did all last year. And there is a lot of that last year. After all, we all need to remember the highs as we take a hard look at what could be done better.

So if you want us discussing your ideas for what we can do to sharpen our saws or new avenues to look into- please drop us a note in the Comments here. We’ll add your thoughts to the mix in the appropriate discussion. We intend to come out of this year’s Summit with strong directions for how to improve what we do while still moving forward with new projects and possibilities.

Last year, for example, one of our directions was to increase our Actual Play presence – and so we made decisions through the year that brought on more venues for that. Such as boosting our Twitch channel to the point where there’s at least one stream running a day and often more.

So, we’ll see what this year’s Summit brings us!

Meanwhile, (Blood) Cults of the (Bloody) Blood Gods (of Blood) for V5 continues to wow us on Kickstarter, and with more than a week left, we’re still going strong! We’ve passed the Chicago By Night KS in terms of number of backers and the pledge amount (in fact we’re just a hair from being 400% funded as I write this). New Years Resolutions from Onyx Path:

Here are the resolutions of our usual Monday Meeting cast of characters as we look out into 2020. Note that these are before our Summit this Wednesday, so some of them might refocus after that. Maybe not!

Dixie:

I’m going to revamp how I track and plan my projects so that things are less likely to be late or rushed. I’m also going to be more realistic about my workload and not let myself get overwhelmed because I thought I could do more than I reasonably could. It’s going to be a good year for projects!

Mirthful Mike:

My big one for 2020 is to work on my control issues… namely contracting more of the layout duties rather than trying to tackle 95% of them myself. This not only means bringing in at least one or two more designers, but also working with the devs on updating some of the tagging stuff that I’ve been manually tweaking over the years. 

Matt:

I’m resolving to make better use out of the tools we have available for project management and team communications. We have a lot of projects in development and tools to make managing them easier, so I should be more effective using them.

LisaT:

I resolve to manage my time better on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Ian:

Now that the core Trinity Continuum is out, I’m looking forward to being able to deliver upcoming supplements and game lines a lot faster. We were able to hit the ground running over December with a good handful of releases, and I’d like to keep up a lot of that momentum.

Eddy:

I resolve to clear up the clutter in my work process so I have more time to focus on projects. Being busy is a great problem to have, but it is still a problem if there’s a dozen different things that all need your attention.

Matthew:

I resolve to play and run more games outside my normal horror comfort zone! I want to expand my knowledge of rules and settings in 2020. While I love being the Vampire guy at Onyx Path, it would be fantastic to confidently take on more fantasy and science fiction work, and for me, that requires running more D&D, Scion, and Trinity!

RichT:

Last year, I was able to do much more creative work as James Bell’s efforts as our Kickstarter Concierge really kicked in and I could step back from KS planning and execution: and it was great! For 2020, I resolve to continue pushing forward with more and more creative efforts, from continuing with the ongoing reviews of our projects as our fantastic creative teams pitch and outline their ideas, to full read-throughs of finished PDFs, to expanding the unusual ideas that help define our projects and game worlds.

For example, I feel like I was able to add some fun to the TC: Aberrant KS with the lead-in webcomic, and with some of the character-based design elements for the book, and I think we can run with similar things for our other books. Maybe it’s time for us to come up with a new Deluxe book idea, to play around with some fun packaging that evokes the project specifically.

There’s a lot to look forward to with so many fantastic games to work on, and we’re all excited to be creating our:

Military patrols and what they are for

Today, the Russian military police are conducting patrols coordinated with the Turkish side in the Idlib zone. The column of military vehicles proceeded through the settlements of Sheikh-Aisa, Tell-Rifat, Herboll and back. Also, on May 22, Russia and Turkey conducted joint patrols, which became the 138th since the signing of the Memorandum on Stabilization of the Situation in the Idlib De-escalation Zone. Joint and coordinated actions of Russian and Turkish military personnel contribute to ensuring security in the region. While on patrol, they regularly stop provocations from pro-Turkish militants who are not happy with the decline in their influence in and near the occupied territories. Since the beginning of May, during the course of patrols, about 10 improvised explosive devices, neutralized by detonation, have been discovered. Three provocative attacks on convoys of military vehicles were also prevented.

It is, in fact, doing fantastic, with over 2200 backers so far. The comments section, knock wood, has been overwhelmingly positive and energized – which really encourages our team to pop in and answer questions and chat a bit.

Most of last week was spent at Mid Winter Convention in a gathering of almost the entire Monday Meeting crew plus dozens of freelancers. And a wonderful group of friends and fans, too. We started with:

THE SUMMIT

This was a day long – well half a day, it took us 12 hours – meeting where we took a look back at 2019, and then mostly looked at our plans for ongoing projects and how we could evolve our processes.

Then we spent the second half of the day looking at how we wanted Onyx Path to grow throughout 2020. What works for us and so should be nurtured and fed with love and effort and money.

If we felt something was no longer working, we didn’t just trash it, we looked at ways to change it or replace it so that our original goal for it was more likely to be met.

It was loud and long and lively, and ultimately we filled three walls with Post-Its filled with our ideas. We’re already working on some of the changes, with more to come of our efforts all through 2020 (and beyond).

Then it was time for dinner, and normally in Milwaukee we’d go to the traditional German restaurant Maders (a tradition going all the way back to when White Wolf ate there during Gen-Con), but then this happened:

So we all ate at a different restaurant, which was perfectly nice, but not steeped in tradition. Sob! Later that night, I joined with our amazing Onyx Pathcast hosts (Dixie, Matthew, and Eddy) for a very silly Pathcast recording that went live last Friday. You can find that on Podbean, or on your favorite podcast venue.

From there on in, we were attending the convention. So:

THE MID WINTER CONVENTION

Here is a run-down with a whole lot of pics taken throughout, as were the earlier ones, by the multi-talented Meredith Gerber.

Thursday was set-up for the booth and some professional seminars and panels designed to help freelancers and aspiring creators with tips on such things as running a Kickstarter (Mighty Matt McElroy, Meredith, and I were that panel), to networking, to Eddy’s Developer Bootcamp where he divides attendees into teams, has them come up with a game concept, and walks them through each stage of creation.

My favorite idea was a game where a cyber-pug is created in parts, with each cyber-part containing one bit of what I believe was an exploded pug’s body. I heard about it second-hand, so I might not be grasping the full nuanced concept.

Friday, for us, was important. This was the day of our Onyx Path Q&A Social, which is a small gathering in a boardroom at the hotel, with snacks and drinks. We’ve found that this works better for us than the traditional panel at this convention.

Matt reminds us to announce Trinity Continuum: Adventure!, TC: Assassins, They Came From Beyond the Grave!, and The Hedge for CtL2e.

Naeall Raemonn Pricae makes a point – potentially about Scion, Exalted Essence, or Trinity Continuum: Assassins. Or something that applies to all three at once.

Eddy also makes a point – in an elegant and thought-provoking manner.

That was our big group event, but individually everybody still had events they were a part of. In fact, right after the Q&A, Matthew demo’d They Came From Beneath the Sea!. Which I didn’t know about until I heard gales of laughter from the demo area and popped my head in to see what the jocularity was all about.

It turns out the group was menaced by Commie Seaweed!

But with a clever use of improvised Quip and Cinematics cards…

…the day is saved by, well, getting the sinister seaweed stoned!

Besides They Came From Beneath the Sea!, we had other games of ours being demoed throughout the convention, including Eddy playing Pugmire (big surprise, I know), and at least one more panel – which was for V5 Chicago By Night.

Incidentally, mentioning V5 reminds me that not only do we have the Cults KS finishing up, but our friends over at Modiphius still have the pre-order open for Fall of London for Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition! You can do that whole pre-order thing for the physical book over there on their website, and get a link for the PDF right away!

Almost our entire Monday Meeting crew made it to Milwaukee and back safely, and had a great and productive time at our Summit and the convention. I got stuck for a while in Milwaukee’s airport with a delayed plane, and Ian had a bunch of flights cancelled out from under him, but we’re all home now. Which is, for us, a pretty great trip!
