I Quit My Job to Flip Furniture Full Time: My Journey to a Creative and Sustainable Career
How I Transformed My Passion for Furniture Restoration Into a Thriving Full-Time Career When I first heard about furniture flipping, I was intrigued but skeptical. Could something as simple as refurbishing old furniture really replace a steady paycheck? At the time, I was working a demanding 9-to-5 job in an office, staring at spreadsheets day after day. The monotony, combined with my growing…

Sometimes I read "organizing" blogs - especially crafters - and see their brilliant solutions and consider them.
But what I really want is a check-in in 3, 6, even 12 months to see if they've kept it that way or not. Because what looks good and what's functional are *very* different metrics.
In other news, I have a rough approximation of what I want for my desk now. Granted, I've been through this cycle repeatedly and am on iteration #4. But I think this one will work the best for what I want.
And if it doesn't, we try again. 😅

How to Help Your Kid Buy a Home (Without Creating a Tax or Legal Mess)
Let’s face it: buying a home is tougher than ever for first-time buyers. So if you’re in a position to help your child take that leap, it’s a generous move—and a smart one. But when real estate and family mix, things can get tricky fast if you’re not careful. Here are three thoughtful (and IRS-friendly) ways to support your kid’s path to homeownership, plus a few common traps to avoid. Give…

While these protests succeeded in disrupting normal operations at the targeted arms companies, they were unable to meaningfully halt the manufacture of weapons, in part because the group best poised to shut down production was conspicuously absent from each of the actions: the companies’ workers. More than two million US workers are employed by the weapons industry, which produces over 80% of all of Israel’s arms imports, including “precision guided munitions, small diameter bombs, artillery, ammunition, Iron Dome interceptors and other critical equipment,” according to the Pentagon, as well as F-35 aircraft—the most advanced fighter jets in the world. In the past month and a half, Israel has used these weapons in a genocidal assault that has killed more than 14,000 Palestinian civilians in Gaza, at least 5,600 of them children. The violence has prompted direct action against the Israeli war machine’s supply chain, with protesters targeting not only munitions factories but also ships transporting arms to Israel and financial firms with significant investments in the weapons industry. But unlike in many other parts of the world, where weapons workers have led the disruption in response to an urgent call for solidarity from Palestinian trade unions, in the US, unions in the weapons industry have so far remained outside the fray.
This is despite the presence of tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of unionized workers in the US weapons industry, some of whom are employed at the very factories that protesters have attempted to shut down this fall. As journalist Taylor Barnes reported earlier this year, each of the five major Pentagon contractors—Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, and General Dynamics—employs some unionized workers, although union density at the firms ranges from as low as 4% at Northrop Grumman to as high as 32% at Boeing. Many of these unionized workers belong either to the International Association of Machinists (IAM), or to the United Auto Workers (UAW), which is part of a renaissance in the US labor movement. Both unions include employees at Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and General Dynamics; the IAM additionally represents workers at Northrop Grumman and M7 Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of the infamous Elbit Systems, while the UAW represents workers at Woodward, Inc., an aerospace firm that gained unwanted attention last month after a viral photo from the ruins of Gaza appeared to show a used missile component with the company’s logo on it. The unions are also actively organizing more workers in the weapons industry: Just last month, for example, the IAM unionized 332 Lockheed employees in Kentucky.
For anti-war labor organizers in the United States, unionized weapons workers present a paradox: Serving such members ostensibly requires making weapons industry jobs stable and remunerative, but the principles of global solidarity call for dismantling the war machine altogether. Traditionally, US unions have only pursued the former mandate. As one anonymous local union president in the industry put it to researcher Karen Bell earlier this year, “my top priority is trying to make sure that we have work in jobs in the United States . . . I don’t make a lot of judgments on anything other than, what can you do to keep the people I represent in work? That’s my job, and to be anything other than that, it would really be a disservice to the people that are paying my salary.” Rather than questioning their role in the industry, unions have reconfirmed their relationships with weapons companies since the start of Israel’s assault on Gaza. Last month, 1,000 IAM members in Arizona and 1,100 UAW members across the Midwest separately ratified new contracts with Raytheon and General Dynamics respectively, during a period when both companies were actively implicated in the mass killing of Palestinian civilians. When the Raytheon contract deal was announced on October 22nd, one IAM leader said he was “proud to support our Raytheon members and excited for this contract’s positive impact on their lives”—a statement that highlights the seemingly irreconcilable conflict between the economic interests of weapons industry workers and the anti-war, anti-genocide movement.

People have never been meaner than in the comments on cleaning channels like ?!?! Why do you guys care so much about other people saying "thanks this helped!" In the comments? I am a known hater when it comes to messes (technically it's organizational OCD) and I don't respond that way to people in real life that cause me panic attacks over dishes not being done.

Enjoyed all the replies in your booksorting poll <3 I was wondering however whether the size of peoples collection has to do with how they sort them.
Like, 20 books? I get that people sort them by height.
500? Sort them by height and find the one you want how?!!
(Sending this as a 3000+ books owner)
THREE THOUSAND BOOKS. Hold on. I've got to sit here for a moment and process that.
Tbh any time someone judges me for my 163 (thank you storygraph stats) books, I'm going to tell them that they don't even know what it could look like if I didn't hold myself back.
Okay, now that I'm done fangirling over how many books you have. This is what makes the most sense to me. There is a certain point in a book collection when you can never hope to find anything again. I'm going to choose to believe that most of the vibes-based collection people either mean genre OR that they have a smaller collection and can get away with a more aesthetic organization.
Really though, this has reminded me that a lot of people's brains work in very interesting way and we associate information very differently. It may be making my brain melt, but it also makes me want to write a paper.

Embracing Identity Beyond Success: A Journey Toward Inner Peace
Navigating the Fear of Professional Decline In today’s world, discussions about identity politics dominate every corner of society. We’re constantly identifying ourselves by political affiliations, beliefs, or roles: “I’m a Democrat, you’re a Republican,” or “I’m a liberal, you’re a conservative.” While these labels can be meaningful, they often overshadow deeper, personal aspects of identity.…

that’s cool for you but unless I take a needle to the thigh every 2 weeks my skin becomes an Eldritch God of Itch whose clutches I cannot escape
skin is not supposed to be perfectly smooth and clear and unblemished. it’s literally like 5 sq ft of organ that’s ENTIRELY ON THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR BODY. it’s supposed to protect you and your organs and your muscles and ligaments etc. without skin that can adapt we would all be riddled with infections and pain. even “imperfect” skin loves you and doesn’t want you to suffer. be nice to it . it is your friend

The Flint water crisis began in 2014, after lead-contaminated drinking water was found to be leaching out from aging pipes into homes citywide.
The American Civil Liberties Union and the Natural Resources Defense Council, with help from other activists and nonprofits, have released statements on the recent progress, celebrating the milestone.
The statements which they chalk up the crisis to “cost-cutting measures and improper water treatment,” that the state “didn’t require treatment to prevent corrosion,” after a “a state-appointed emergency manager” switched the water supply to the Flint River.
There is no safe level of lead exposure; each nanogram causes harm. In addition to long-known risks, such as damage to children’s brains and certain cancers, there is also significant evidence that exposure to lead is linked to numerous cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart attack.
The coalition mobilized the citizenry and filed a lawsuit against Flint and Michigan state officials to secure safe water. The result was a settlement in March 2017, under which a federal court in Detroit ordered Flint to give every resident the opportunity to have their lead pipe replaced at no cost, as well as conduct comprehensive tap water testing, implement a faucet filter distribution and education program, and maintain funding for health programs to help residents deal with the effects of Flint’s tainted water, according to the NRDC.
The coalition then returned to court six times in six years to ensure the city and state kept to the timeline, which was delayed by COVID-19, and other reasons which The Detroit News described as “spotty record-keeping” and “ineffective management.”
On July 1st, the State of Michigan submitted a progress report to a federal court confirming that, more than eight years after the settlement, nearly 11,000 lead pipes were replaced and more than 28,000 properties were restored where the maintenance had taken place.
Of the 4,200 buildings where lead pipes are known to still be in service, their owners have either left the properties vacant, abandoned, or have declined the free replacement under the Safe Water Drinking Act. The coalition has said it will continue to monitor city and state progress on these remaining lines.
“Thanks to the persistence of the people of Flint and our partners, we are finally at the end of the lead pipe replacement project,” said Pastor Allen C. Overton of the Concerned Pastors for Social Action, one of the organizations that sued the city. “While this milestone is not all the justice our community deserves, it is a huge achievement.”

People will bass boost a song and make it sound like total ass
(I love bass, but more and more I've come to the opinion that no one really fucking knows how to use it meaning all you get is really repetitive loud droning instead of anything interesting)
#I gotta be real with you... bass boosted Freebird sounds like ass random video; this is in no way an improvement#kinda related but I think Infected Mushroom is a really good band; but going to a live concert the bass was way overdone#cause it was going for like... rave lite vibes; like the whole concert... I didn't enjoy myself at anypoint that night#anyway... it's like... man... you managed to make this good song sound worse just cause the bass isn't balanced anymore#maybe where it was written to be is where you should leave it concert venue#like man... these songs shouldn't sound worse live then they do at home purely cause of audio mixing and balancing#or other fucking day at the store there was someone thoomping their shit; and I could actually hear the music under it#and it's like... you're ruining the actual song and making it sound like ass cause of bass boosting#distorted sounds are fine; but only when it's intentional... when you take a complete piece of music and distort it#and especially when you're not doing that with intention but just doing it cause bass good... you get a sloppy pile of shit in sound form#...see... stuff played on organs; that's like bass boosting but good; you've really oomphed it up but you've kept it harmonic#or uh... that Scottish war horn that a post goes around here about every now and then; that thing sounds good#and it sounds good cause everything is harmonizing#bass boosted isn't harmonizing nor is it intentionally discordant which can be interesting#nah... it's just shitty by people with poor taste; fucking knew a guy who had a sound system like that and his thing was#'my music's so good; so everyone's lucky to hear it'; well they can't hear it max you idiot; they can only feel your horrible vibrations#I'm all for a driving bass line; something heavy and raw and maybe even industrial#but it's gotta be intentional and not just bass boosted trash#and actually... I could probably be for bass boosting music if people actually bothered to audio balance it at all#instead of bass boosting just meaning blowing out the bass#distortion is a cool effect; but not when it comes from just badly done slop

Reposting this from a friend bc I think it is VERY important to know of this, and for immigrants, and other possible victims of the ICE Raids happening right now
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s to also a very huge edit, from the list of very helpful people who have been reblogging and providing more info.
I’m not as well informed but I will be relaying the information and tagging each person who added onto this post:
@onthedriftinthetardis -
The phone number in the first photo is ONLY for Orange County, California!
Look up your local ACLU affiliate here
@6feetunderwater -
It always makes me nervous to see a reporting phone number passed around without any links to verify it, so the number in the first pic can be found on the site for the Orange County Rapid Response Network, which is "an interconnected system of non-profit and grassroots organizations, civil rights attorneys, law school clinics, and individuals working together to respond to dehumanizing immigration enforcement activities and policies in Orange County"
@geekerypeekery -
The second warrant is not fake, but is an administrative rather than judicial warrant, and has no constitutional authority to bypass Fourth Amendment protections - in other words, it does not entitle the bearer to enter and search your home. It simply authorizes agents of the issuing department to contact you. Always ask to see the warrant before opening your door!
In addition to the ACLU links, try contacting the National Immigration Law Center https://www.nilc.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Warrants-Subpoenas-Facts.pdf
@american-anger -
The phone number listed here is specific to Orange County in California, but you can look up other California counties here:
CALIFORNIA RAPID RESPONSE NETWORKS
@beaniebaneenie -
Unpleasant reminder: within 100 miles of the border (which is home to 200 million people and virtually all major cities in the US), ICE does not need a warrant to enter your home, your car, to search anything, or even to arrest you.
You are not automatically safe just because they don't have a real warrant.
The best and safest thing you can do is learn to have escape routes- quick ways to get out of the house or area you're in if you find out ICE or CBP are around. Those of us who do have documentation? Time for us to step the fuck up.
Film any interaction. Every interaction. If you're able, step into the conversation and be a Karen/Kyle- weaponize your privilege for Good. If you get asked about people? Use positive but vague statements so you a) cannot be caught in a lie, and b) do not give any information away.
"I don't know them that well, but I don't tend to socialize much. They seem great to me."
"I can't remember the last time I saw them."
"Maybe they speak another language, I can't remember details. But I picked up Duolingo during the pandemic and tons of other people did too."
"I'm not sure."
"I'm sorry, I can't help you."
Even if you're somewhere the 100-mile Exception doesn't apply and a warrant is in fact needed? I don't expect ICE and CBP to play by the rules for long, if at all. I fully expect this to get ugly, and fast.
Cheeto has already declared an emergency of national security at the border, and is mobilizing the military to have jurisdiction over a huge swath of the country. It's essentially tantamount to martial law. And it's only been four days.
Gear up for a long, hard fight. This is gonna be a marathon, not a sprint.
— I am leaving all of this as an edit because on the off chance someone does find the posts that have these people specifically reblogging, I don’t want it to be too late. So I’m comprising it all here
Here are a few other people’s reblogs I thought were important:
