there's an annoying aspect to about that that can make it kinda hard for vgm only listeners to find music they like the sound of usually because osts are only genre catagorised as 'soundtrack' so even if it's got a range from prog rock to club to jazz-funk you wouldn't know that if you aren't familiar with the genres so it makes it "harder" to find that stuff on your own...?

[queue notes: there was actually a long break between this post & the last] anyway tryin to creep back into things with more homework/researchy type stuff, if nothing else combing through the article section on rpgmaker.net & one of them was talking about "sound hints" (Ex: a locked door makes a clicking noise, but a blocked one makes a thudding noise) idk what I would use that for, but I just like the idea of using sounds instead of explicit text for some things putting a pin in that I suppose
Same article brought up the idea of consistent "clue" messages on searchable tiles, which would definitely be more relevant to Wizkens. So for instance, there should always be an implication that a character is searching for something on tile types that may contain items.  Wizkens would have a mix of purely flavor & searchable tiles, so I should remember to make those distinctions with some clues in the text.

Instagram needs to stop recommending me booktok videos because I just watched a video stating men (I am a woman btw) never read “fun” books because they’re always reading Classic literature and that they should read Fourth Wing instead. Like I’ve never read Fourth Wing so I’m not gonna judge it but the notion that classic literature can’t be fun and is always boring is so mind boggling to me. I’ve had more fun with classic lit than I have with the majority of modern books I’ve read because I just prefer the characters or the world and ideas presented. The notion that because a book is ‘academic’ or ‘homeworky’ means it can’t be fun is ridiculous and it really just seems anti-intellectual to me?

18, 23, 29 for the ask game!
18. Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines?
nah. i'd love to, don't get me wrong! there are some beautiful worksheets out there and i like the idea of having all the information to hand for sure, but i just can't make myself do it. it's too homeworky. i can't even use scrivener's character templates, i put the name in and then everything is random dot points in no order. i use all my organisation at work, i don't have any left over for home 😂
i guess i do outline longer fics/original stories, but it's not with a guided tool, it's dot points all the way down. i often don't outline until i'm midway through writing the story too and "outline" can be pretty generous. this is from my "aaa priorities" document (which functions as my calendar and quick reference guide)
Tumblr media
the fics are in order of what my priorities were last time i thought about it and i haven't updated the Prince of Grief one that i finished over the weekend, so you can see what i had there as my outline for the ending that's been sitting there for a casual 4 years. evanescent idolatry's outline goes on for pages and pages though. which is part of the reason i haven't written it--because i've already fucking written it 😂
23. If you were to revise one of your older fics from start to finish, which would it be and why?
the one that's on my mind rn is Prince of Grief because as i say i finished it over the weekend and i'm not gonna lie, rereading it was REALLY painful. i didn't let myself edit it because i wanted to FINISH it, but i did have to go in and correct john's quirk, which i'd used incorrectly. what, did 2018 laura not have the time to check the wiki? she didn't even think she needed to, hubristic bitch that she is! and oh my god, i overused CAPS LOCK. that's not even addressing the way i leaned heavily on dialogue because i hadn't learned how to balance it with prose yet, as well as like a million other things that hurt me as i was rereading.
apart from that, maybe Elevatorstuck! it's not a particularly long fic, but i was unspeakably proud of it when i wrote it and the concept remains solid. i like the timestamp format and there are times when the writing is pretty good too, but god. i didn't know how to write john back then. a couple of years ago i went through and got rid of like 80 million exclamation points and i think that improved it, but it'd be cool to do a rewrite with all my 2024 mad skillz.
29. If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?
to be honest, i think the "inspired by" function of ao3 is really underrated and there's nothing really holding me back from writing sequels/prequels of other people's fics. i mean, i'd ask as a courtesy, but i know if anyone wanted to write something based on my fics i'd just be super flattered and want to read it!
i suppose Social Norms aren't the only things that get in a way of a "could", so my answer is actually BONES OF BLACK MARROW by oxfordRoulette. it's hands down the coolest fic ever and i think about it constantly. the reason i can't do this is because the story is perfect in its shape and there isn't a need for a sequel, but also because the creativity and coding know-how required to do what they did with the formatting is simply beyond me. i have on multiple occasions shown people this fic as proof that fanfic is Real Art

Herb: New Podcast Series From Drilled's Amy Westervelt
Tumblr media
You have to hand it to podcaster Amy Westervelt. She apparently never sleeps, running her own podcast network, Critical Frequency, and creating/producing/hosting multiple podcasts about climate change. So this week, award-winning climate podcaster Amy Westervelt has launched a new three-episode miniseries called Herb. The podcast investigates the history of how fossil fuel companies quietly, insidiously, created the concept of "corporate free speech" (as seen in Supreme Court cases like Citizens United) through the story of its titular character: Herb Schmertz, the Mobil Oil VP who got the oil guys into the corporate free speech business in the 1970s. I've listened to the first episode, and don't let his first name -- Herb -- fool you into thinking he's some mindless suit working in the C-suite of a large corporation. No. Herb Schmertz is an evil genius, who uses the Cold War tactics of brainwashing people without their knowledge of being so influenced. If you've ever seen a feel-good TV ad about the power of teachers or female athletes or saving the environment, and then it weirdly ends with the incongruous logo of, say, ExxonMobil or BP, and you wondered what the story was there…this is the story. As with so much of Westervelt's work, the miniseries takes a historical subject that may sound dry or homeworky and makes it lively and brisk. People have called her podcast Drilled "climate stories through a true-crime lens" and there's some of that here. Why do companies—oil companies especially—spend so much money producing feel-good ads that seem unrelated to what the companies actually do? Inspiring messages about female athletes from Chevron, an ode to the power of teachers from crude oil producer Conoco Philips, Aramco’s multi-million-dollar purchase of a professional soccer team in the UK. These (real) marketing programs, and many more like them, are not so much about being a good corporate citizen as they are about seeming like a citizen, period. Someone with ideas and policy positions, morals and ethics. A philosophy. A reputation. And, most importantly, a personality. Host Amy Westervelt uncovers how Herb's work influences all this nefarious feel-good messaging from oil companies today and explores Mobil's (and then ExxonMobil's) role in setting the legal foundation for the expansion of corporate free speech in Supreme Court cases from Bellotti to Citizens United. Today, oil company lawyers are looking to further expand corporate free speech protections, making the argument in more than two dozen climate cases that everything oil companies have ever said about climate change is protected speech, including statements they knew were misleading. Legal analysts familiar with these cases have begun echoing what Westervelt has said all along: the next Citizens United will probably be a climate case. “As soon as I saw that oil companies had appointed First Amendment experts, not liability experts, as lead counsel in the climate cases, I figured these cases would ultimately hinge on a free speech argument,” Westervelt says. “What I did not know, and few did, was that fossil fuel companies had played an integral role in creating the whole idea of corporate free speech in the first place.” Listen to Episode 1, “The Panic,” wherever you get podcasts. Episode 2, “A Legal Victory,” will be out July 25 and Episode 3, “Moving the Goalposts,” will be out August 1.

6taro showing up on Usagi’s doorstep and patiently ringing the doorbell at 30 second intervals (he times it too). He stands just outside the door, hiding both a bouquet of her favorite flowers behind his back and a frantic heart pounding ceaselessly in his chest. To onlookers, it might have been comical to see such a large, bold-looking, intimidating man brought to his knees by his nerves as he anxiously anticipates the arrival of his lover, and he would hate to admit it, but she still has that effect on him, even now, even given his age. He was on his way to fifty, for god’s sake! It pained him to realize that fact, but here he was anyway, determined to see her despite how he looked and how small he felt.
Usagi comes to the door with a bounce in her step and already realizes who’s on the other side when she sees his large shadow filtering through the side window pane. She tugs the door open cheerfully and already has a smile on her face when she first spots Jotaro’s chest which is eye-level to her then looks up to meet his aquamarine eyes she was so fond of.
