I just got reminded, after reading homunculus-argument’s story of crawling across a bridge, of my own experience running into strangers unexpectedly in the middle of the night.

I was running home from a short bonfire party, training for a marathon later that summer. The run was about twelve miles, and halfway down was a significant local landmark, so I decided to take a short video. It was pitch black outside, so it was mostly audio, and I just said a few sentences like “I’m here at (landmark) and it’s the middle of the night. The trail’s nice, but you can’t see (landmark).”

Then, two seconds after ending the video and going back to running, I saw a crowd of about three people just standing there silently. I wasn’t disturbed — I assumed they were having a quiet moment watching the stars — but I was a little embarrassed for interrupting.

I just kept running, and quietly said “uh, sorry” as I passed them. The night continued without incident.
