Hooksett NH is not the place I’d go looking for a fantastic oyster experience. My father echoed that sentiment earlier today. But nevertheless that is what I found in this little strip mall. New England Tap House Grille is pretty unassuming from the outside. There is a sign on the window that advertises their new raw bar. Though I don’t know how new it is considering I got this recommendation several months ago.
The Restaurant:
Tumblr media
Inside this place is cozy. It’s typical tap house, higher end bar energy. It was already pretty busy just before five, but I got a table right away. My server was Ryan. He was more than attentive and sweet. He was awkward too but I liked talking to him, and when he figured out I was here for the oysters he was more than accommodating. He read me the oyster list and described them! He even gave me the receipt after I ordered 6 of each of them. It did take about 30 minutes for them to come out, maybe a bit longer. But Ryan did offer to separate the oysters by type which I accepted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the best things about this place was just how much they gave me in terms of the fixings for the oysters. I got two whole lemons, a cup of horseradish, and a squeeze bottle of hot sauce and mignonette! A whole damn squeeze bottle! I’m an acidity lover so I admit I ignore horseradish and hot sauce. But lemon and mignonette? I could drink that squeeze bottle and been the happiest clam on that tray.
The Oysters:
- Black Magic
•From Thunder Cove / PEI
•small
•described as having a smooth salinity with a vegetal finish
I really enjoyed the Black Magic oysters. They were on the smaller side but packed with flavor. I was so excited I downed the first two before remembering I need to take pics for this fun little adventure. There was plenty of oysters liquor which is always a great sign. They were the best kind of salty and one of my favorites on the tray.
Tumblr media
- Crowes Creek
• Dennis /MA.
• MASSIVE
• Very salty with a sweet finish
These have to be some of the biggest oysters I’ve ever seen. They were deep and the oyster meat was huge. It definitely took a couple of chews to get down. They were delicious and I enjoyed loading them up with the mignonette and lemon and still getting a real punch of salt through all the acid.
Tumblr media
- Duxbury Oysters
• Duxbury / MA.
• medium size
• sweet and a little salty
These six were tasty but not my favorite. They were the deepest. Had a lot of oyster liquor and was the biggest compared to shell size.
Tumblr media
- Scorton Creek
• Barnstable Habor / Cape Cod MA.
• small
• very plump and a little sweet
I switched it up and jumped to the bottom of the list and decided to enjoy the smallest ones on the tray. They were probably my least favorite (and that isn’t saying too much as they were all tasty). They were very plump, though, which I enjoyed.
Tumblr media
- Moondancers
• Mook Sea Farm / ME.
• medium
• salty to start and sweet on the finish
Like a damn fool I admit my memory of this oyster is a bit clouded by the fact that I accidentally snorted the mignonette and it burned so bad I thought I was going to give myself a bloody nose. After that initially unpleasant experience of my own making these were a very mild oyster and I enjoyed them.
Tumblr media
- Pemaquid
• Dodge Cove Oysters / ME.
• large
• salty
These were my last oysters of the night, and I enjoyed the taste. They were mostly salty and paired well with my favorite fixings, but they were the only ones I had a hard time getting out of the shell. But they were undeniably tasty.
Tumblr media
Everything Else:
After my oyster feast, I ordered some fish and chips that were delicious. The fish was perfectly crispy, and the fries were fresh, hot, and tasty in the tartar sauce they served it with.
I also got their brownie sundae to go and that was the perfect thing to curl up on the couch with after a particularly long day.
Tumblr media
Overall: This place claims fame for the selection of beers and their burgers, but if you like oysters and don't want to drive all the way to the coast this is one of the best places to get your oyster fix. The squeeze bottle and the selection of oysters are truly the highlight and I recommend them 10/10.

13 Days of Halloween:Day 1. Haunted House.
Summary:The dorm members of Ramshackle begin decorating for Halloween at Night Raven College. While they decorate, Yuu explains his inspiring behind their dorm's theme.
Yuko Satoshi and Grim had just finished decorating the entrance to Ramshackle. There were fake cobwebs and spiders lining the gate surrounding Ramshackle. Purple and green lights also decorated the gate. Along the path leading to the dorm itself were jack-o-lanterns with creepy faces, standing on both sides of the path. Purple and green bats hung from the trees. Fake graves and coffins were scattered across the grassy lawn in front of Ramshackle. At the door were two larger jack-o-lanterns at either side. The same purple and green lights hung from the roof of the dorm and paper vines that looked withered were taped to the various walls outside with more fake cobwebs to coat them.
"Myahaha! This place looks so cool!"
Grim had an excited look on his face, as they Yuu. Both of them look proud of their work.
"I know, right? This place looks amazing already!"
They walked to the garden behind Ramshackle to make sure that everything was in place there. The fence was secure and decorated with the same lights that were hung on main gate. Small black cat statues sat on the flat edges of the gate. Inside the garden itself, there wasn't much but a few paper ghosts and bats chilling in the garden.
"I wonder how the others are doing?"
Yuu muttered to himself as they headed back towards the entrance and went through the front door. Yuu looked around the dorm, everything but the upstairs section of the dorm was decorated. Fake blood stains were on the walls and floors. Cobwebs, spiders, lights, and bats hung from the ceiling. Torn up curtains draped over the windows. The main difference was in the lounge. In the center was a large cauldron sitting on a black box with a smoke machine underneath. Surrounding the cauldron were shelves filled with small props. Bottles of oils and other liquids. Jars filled with herbs and crystals. Sets of spellbooks and grimoires. Even glass eyeballs and jars of fake blood sit on the shelf.
Yuu stared at the whole place in amazement with a gleam in his eyes. Ever since he found out that people celebrate Halloween in Twisted Wonderland, a holiday he actually knows about, he's been planning since early September. The rest of his dorm members, Solis Bluestar, Rhythm Whiterose, Koda Goldclaws, and Joshua Hooksett were sitting on the different furniture in the lounge.
"This place looks great." Koda said while Rhythm nodded in agreement.
"Gotta say, I've never seen you so eager for really anything that happens at NRC." Joshua took notice of Yuu's excited expression.
"Yeah, even I've never seen you this giddy. What gives?" Grim smirked as he remarked while Solis remained silent, taking in the decorations as Yuu talked.
"It's Halloween! Of course I'm excited! I mean, its really the only holiday in Twisted Wonderland that I actually recognize and plus, its one of my favorites back home."
"Really? You guys celebrate Halloween back in your world?"
"Yeah! People dress up as different monsters just like how they do here but people back home would also dress up as characters from video games, books, even movies. And of course, the best part of Halloween is getting the best candy from the best neighborhoods!"
Solis glanced around again before deciding to finally ask the question.
"So, where'd you get the idea for our dorm's theme? I mean, when I think of haunted houses, I usually think of ghosts and old buildings but, witchcraft? That's definitely new for me."
"Hehe, yeah. I guess the haunted house part was obvious but I mean, if you think about it, we're practically living in a haunted house that just so happens to be a dorm."
"As for the witchcraft part, I got the idea from Hornton. He told me about how in ancient times, witches were often associated with the dead. I figured since we're constantly hanging out with ghosts, it would be a fun costume idea."
"Who's Hornton?" Grim stared at Yuu, confused, since he didn't remember meeting anyone named Hornton.
"Oh, he's someone from one of the other dorms, Diasomnia, I think. He's more of an acquaintance than anything else."
"There's no way anyone here is actually named that."
"Yeah, come on, Yuu. Spill the beans."
"Well..."
The group trailed off into other topics as the evening turned to night.

I've gotten into these little packs of pickled green beans as an occasional grocery store treat, but they can be a bit tough and a bit much on their own. So today I had the bright idea to combine them with my go-to driving-to-Vermont snack (Hooksett Rest Area's homemade potato chips) and make these little pickle-potato bites and I have a new favorite driving-to-Vermont snack

Seasonal Tree Care Tips Every Homeowner in Hooksett, NH Should Know
Tumblr media
Hooksett, NH, experiences all four seasons in full force—from snowy winters to warm, humid summers. Each season brings unique challenges and opportunities for maintaining the health and safety of your trees. If you're a homeowner in the area, understanding seasonal tree care is essential for protecting your property and preserving the beauty of your landscape.
At Tree Fellas Tree Service, we’ve put together this helpful guide to ensure your trees thrive year-round.
Spring: Inspect and Refresh
Spring is the time to assess any damage caused by winter storms or heavy snow. Look for:
Broken or dead branches
Signs of disease (fungus, spots on leaves, odd growth patterns)
Soil compaction or exposed roots
It’s also the ideal time for tree trimming to promote new growth and proper shape. A quick spring check-up from a local tree service company can save you time and costly issues down the road.
Summer: Monitor and Water Wisely
Hot summer days can stress even the healthiest trees. Here’s how to help:
Deep water your trees during dry spells
Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed competition
Watch for signs of pests like aphids or caterpillars
If you’re unsure how to care for newly planted or struggling trees, it may be best to hire professional arborists to assess the situation and make recommendations tailored to your landscape.
Fall: Prepare for Dormancy
Fall is the season to prepare your trees for the harsh New Hampshire winter:
Remove deadwood and weak limbs before snow weighs them down
Apply a slow-release fertilizer to strengthen roots
Rake fallen leaves and remove debris to prevent mold or pest infestations
This is also a great time to plant new trees, as cooler weather allows roots to establish before spring growth.
Winter: Prune Smart and Stay Safe
Winter is a great time for structural pruning when trees are dormant. Plus, with leaves gone, it’s easier to identify problems. Avoid trying to remove large limbs yourself—this is a job best left to professionals with the right equipment and safety training.
