I have a character I'm writing who can be summed up as "she's the worst Plastic, and also looks warm and inviting, and no one knows that she's plastic because she pretends she's sweet and she's good at pretending".

Her name is Angelina (yes, I went there, yes, it was on purpose, don't come for me, this is tame compared to other writers).

Why do I bring this up?

My mom keeps complaining that I made her pretty, despite how often I tell her that "being pretty" is an integral part of her character (because her pretty appearance means she gets away with murder, and she knows it, and so is obsessive about her looks).

She wants me to make her look like a swamp monster.

At this point, it's not even her trying to convince me, she just throws the comment out after reading about the character, like she's lodging a complaint just to have it on record. She doesn't even pause for a response, she just keeps talking.

Example:

"You shouldn't make her look pretty. She's evil, have her look like it. Anyways, I think this scene could..."

It's like a running gag. Which is weird to have about your written characters.

And that's why I'm sharing. Because speaking into the metaphorical void is free and therapy is expensive.

Okay so I just got a game idea after playing RDR2 and wishing I could kill a select few characters.

I was thinking this:

First, start off with writing a games plot, do the whole damn thing like regular and everything being the same until you get to the play testing part of development. That’s where the twist in this idea is.

Let’s say you have an ally that is extremely dense and gets the player into more trouble than what’s it’s worth, well what if the player wants to put a bullet in their head, a wand up their ass, a sword through their stomach, etc… well let’s give them the ability to do so.

And after that, you write a whole new storyline about what happens if this person dies. Maybe your other allies will begin to hate you for your action, maybe they’ll begin to fear you and not annoy you.

Idk, it’s definitely already been done but I just want to make a game and then crowdsource what kinds of AUs or Alternate Timelines the community would want to see be in the game as an actual path.

Anaxa’s character stories all being in mediums that have already been destroyed has me climbing the WALLS. Cerces looking through his memories. A study record that no longer exists. An improvised speech that nobody would have written down. Another fragment of memory that nobody got to see. The complicated bits of his character and explanations for his goals and Why he is the way he is will fade away and he will be remembered largely as a performer and a blasphemer. How will they remember him when so little of him yet remains?

In this Essay I Will

The reason why Lex Luther is able to be one of Superman's greatest foes is because of the two's power division. They're rivals, meant to play off each other.

(this isn't a story, it's me being a pedantic a** about creative writing, jsyk)

Superman is just that - a super man. Man 2.0, if you will (while he's on Earth, that is, but I am NOT going down that rabbit hole today or ever, thanks), and as a result, he's basically unkillable in any fight that requires him to respond physically to threats.

Superman has no physical weaknesses (except Kryptonite, and just wait, we'll get to that one). He's not afraid of property damage, nor does he have Batman's killing rule. One does not simply walk into a physical fight with Superman and expect to live, much less win. You can't defeat Superman on a living battlefield.

But physical fights aren't the only battlefield that supers have to fight on. They also have to deal with POLITICS and the court of PUBLIC OPINION.

By basic necessity, heroes work outside the system - they have to, the system is corrupt and likely to use the hero for their own agendas, and heroes can't risk being sent to prison if they want to keep fighting for the people. Their identity would be exposed, their families immediately put in danger, and they can't get out without being on the run.

The problem with working outside the system, however, is that it means that you can't change the system itself. Heroes fight the symptoms of corruption, they don't fix it. Daredevil and Batman (when he's acting as Bruce Wayne) are exceptions to this rule, however, Superman is NOT.

Superman has no ability to change the way the public sees him. Clark Kent isn't about to win any awards as a news reporter, either, so it's not like his civilian side can help him sway the public and fix his image either.

Lex Luther, however, DOES have the power to affect public opinion - he has no physical abilities to fight Superman with, so he doesn't fight him physically. He's one of Superman's greatest foes because he's able to change the battlefield Superman has to fight him in. He's clever enough to figure out how to make all of Superman's physical advantages completely worthless, and can even make those advantages a weakness, by building Superman up as some potential threat to humanity. He's smart, and he fights smart.

Which is why Kryptonite is such utter bullshit.

I truly hate Kryptonite, because it's a product of laziness and lack of understanding towards some of the basic tenets of writing rival characters. Some artists couldn't understand how Lex Luther could possibly be a relevant threat to Superman when he's just a low-powered human, and so they came up with some stupid ultimate kill switch to turn off Superman's powers.

Now, kill switches can be written cleverly - it's very hard to do so, but they can.

The problem is that Kryptonian is simultaneously portable, accessible (because I swear, every villain has a stash of it at this point), and has a sustained effect. You're only supposed to pick two out of the three - if it's portable and accessible, then it can't sustain it's effect (like a bomb, it blows up and that's it, if the hero survives that one explosion then your f-cked), if it's accessible and sustained, then it can't be portable (meaning the villain has to lure the hero into it), if it's sustained and portable, it can't be accessible - and Kryptonite is accessible. I don't care that in the series "lore" it's supposed to be hard to get - when almost every villain can pull it out and does so at least once, then it's not hard to get. What the author/artist is telling you isn't matching up with what they're showing you.

And that's bad writing. Period.

Once again, like I said, kill switches can be written well, it's just hard to do so. If you don't put in the work, taking your time while fleshing out the mechanics, though, then it won't work. And Kryptonite doesn't work. It simply doesn't.

We didn't need this. We already had something that was way more interesting, and now that Kryptonite exists, Lex Luther's threat level has dropped down to being just another mook in a long, boring line of mooks.

It's such a shame, honestly.

The Ishigamis and The Gifts of Science

Dr. Stone is a love letter to humanity and its sciences. The main character, Senku, often acts averse to all forms of affection, and the only love he doesn't deny is his love for science. But Senku is so so full of love. He just expresses it in a way other than physical touch or words of affirmation. He gives.

But let's go back to the one who taught him so– Byakuya Ishigami, his father. The love of Senku's life.

Byakuya is introduced in the tenth chapter of the manga as a dotting father who sells his car to present Senku with scientific instruments he will need for a more efficient research. This car is Byakuya's means of transportation, and given that he is crying and shaking in this scene, it could not have been easy for him to lose it. But his love for Senku is so big, that he wants to support his son's passion even if it means sacrificing a great convenience for him.

And Senku? Senku truly fell in love with science at this moment.

If there is anything that Senku is, he is Byakuya Ishigami's son through and through. They may seem like two very different people, as Byakuya is an openly affectionate guy while Senku is more closed off with showing his true emotions. But Senku takes more from Byakuya than not, and one of them is by showing his love and/or care for others through giving the gifts of science.

And it starts with Byakuya.

Byakuya had failed his first attempt at being an astronaut ten years back, but he doesn't give up and tries again. Senku then creates a bodysuit that manipulates muscle movement to help Byakuya pass his swimming test. And while the bodysuit doesn't quite help Byakuya to swim, the thought Senku had put into it had motivated Byakuya more than ever to pass the test. This is one of the fundamentals of gifting– sometimes, it really is the thought behind it that matters.

This motivation is what Byakuya credits during his interview with JAXA for passing the tests. He understands that Senku might not have given him any words of encouragement, but this bodysuit was all the words that were needed between them. Senku wants Byakuya to achieve his dreams just as badly. It's the way Senku shows his love for his father.

And it's the way Senku shows his love for others too.

One of the primitive aspects of the Ishigami village is that it considers bad eyesight as a type of "disease". Fuzzy disease, to be exact.

Suika wears a melon mask at all times to help clear her eyesight, which Senku later reveals is due to the pinhole effect. She, however, has never told Senku or the others about having the fuzzy disease. Senku himself notes how odd it is for her to wear a melon around, and confronts her about it once he decides to create glass. This is one of the most beautiful scenes in Dr. Stone, as Suika finds out that her disease was never a disease, and is finally able to see as clearly as the others. Senku basically gives her perfect eyesight, something she didn't even know was possible before.

[Antibiotics Acquired!]

One of the most beloved people in this village is the priestess, Ruri. Two of Senku's new friends, Kohaku and Chrome are deeply affected by her unknown fatal disease. Senku is such a person who would help a stranger even if there is no benefit to do so (though he would never admit to it), what more a person who his new friends truly love and care about. He cures Ruri of pneumonia, giving her a chance to live a life without the worry of it being her last day every day.

Senku forms an alliance with Gen, who plays the role of Tsukasa's spy, for the promise of a bottle of cola. Both Senku and Gen are aware that the cola is only a front for Gen's loyalty to Senku and the Kingdom of Science, for Gen needs his superficial reputation as a comfort and cannot simply join them if there is no personal benefit for him to do so.

This cola is also the first gift post-petrification that Senku brands himself on, probably because it represents the first gift that is not out of necessity and leans toward a comfort/luxury that they both used to enjoy in the modern world.

For a modern man such as Gen, drinking his favourite soda in the stone world might have been one of the happiest days in his life.

Senku cares about people so much, even if the people in question have tried to kill him. Senku sees Homura as a soldier who is merely following the orders given by her leader, but he also sees the Homura as a lonesome girl sitting by herself on trees day and night.

As usual, Senku hides his kindness and care by showing an evil ulterior motive, such as turning Homura to their side using the cotton candy, but Ruri points out that this is a facade. Similarly to Gen, a person with such an ego is unable to seem as if he is doing something good out of the kindness of his heart.

As winter approaches, the elders in the village are worried about losing people to the cold. Senku hears about this and creates a stove which has a multi-purpose of cooking and also radiating heat for the people to stave off the coldness of winter. And speaking of winter...

[Christmas Acquired!]

Senku hangs up lights in the tree for the "light bulb test" on a random night. Except the date isn't random at all and he drops enough hints for Gen to catch on that it is the night of Christmas. The significance of the day is only appreciated by Gen and himself, as they are the only modern timers in the village. It is for the sake of nostalgia, but Senku would rather be caught dead than admit that he is a sentimental guy with such irrational feelings.

And well, it all comes back to that scene with Byakuya, doesn't it? If you recall, Byakuya calls himself "Santa" while giving the scientific presents to the young Senku. This indicates Senku received them during Christmas. Which means... Christmas is a sentimental day to Senku and his father. An anniversary of Senku receiving his Christmas presents from Byakuya, which led to his deeper dive into his science obsession. The beginning of it all, one would say.

And even though he's dead and buried, Byakuya never stops giving. He gives Senku the Ishigami village to provide Senku with allies. He gives Senku Lillian's music, because he believes in the light of music and understands the importance of media to society. He collects platinum till his last breath, because he believes that Senku will need it someday. Byakuya keeps on giving to Senku, because his love for his son is so huge and unconditional. And because he promised.

Surely, there is no greater love in the manga than Byakuya's love for his son and Senku's love for his father. Byakuya could easily win ten billion best father awards... well, not like there's much competition for that in shounen mangas.

sorry but sirius black did not run away from home to live with james potter after cutting off his family and rejecting their legacy, align his identity with james’s values, family, and the same cause, match james as an intellectual equal in rebelliousness, confidence, charisma, talent, mischief, have a two way mirror system because they couldn’t be separated even in detentions, spend twelve years of his life consumed by grief and rage that never fully resolves, subconsciously fixate on harry as a living extension of james because of said grief and trauma almost like he was trying to resurrect what he lost as if it was the only time he was ever whole, never truly move on from james’s death, never form any other bond that came close to what he had with james for yall to look at romantic prongsfoot and immediately file it away as ‘would be weird romantically’

I think this is one of my favorite lines from the Wraith route because of (imo) how much the meaning changes depending on if you got there via Spectre or Nightmare. For Spectre, it honestly strikes me as a genuine question. Why are you doing this to her? If you're on the Spectre route, you presumably already know the Narrator can't really be trusted, since you had to reject his reward to get here. What are you hoping to gain from continuing to hurt her? For Nightmare, it honestly just makes me sad. As the Shifting Mound describes her, "She desires only companionship, but the only thing she knows is how to hurt." This line feels like a plea from someone who genuinely doesn't understand why you keep rejecting her. She wants to be with you, but she just can't understand how to do that in a way which doesn't hurt you.
