hiccup with a hippie! reader !! a reader who’s so whimsical and silly and is always giggling/making people giggle with them, who even tho is a viking hates war and always vouches for peace and love. who is always walking around barefoot in the forest and making friends with the bugs and playing with the dragons, who has SO much love to give to everyone that they can’t help but melt into it, especially hiccup who is putty in their hands every time they so much as look at him and smile sweetly
THIS WAS SO FUN TO WRITE
Tumblr media
barefoot hearts.
“in which Hiccup tries to lead with logic, and you answer with laughter and love—and somehow, that’s what saves them.”
🌿 sunshine x strategist · Hiccup x whimsical!reader 🕊️ barefoot diplomacy · peacecore love · forest flowers braided in duty’s hair
Tumblr media
Hiccup Haddock had flown through blizzards so thick they scraped ice across his visor. He’d faced down fire-breathing tyrants and blood-stained warlords, watched dragons scream in cages, and carried the weight of a legacy that had nearly broken him more than once. He had scars from blades and betrayal, burn marks beneath his clothes, and the kind of exhaustion that didn’t sleep.
But none of that—not the politics of leadership, not the sting of grief, not even the agony of rebuilding a home from ash—had prepared him for you.
You, with your grass-stained ankles and windblown hair braided through with wildflowers like secrets. You, barefoot in the Berk woods, humming lullabies to bees and whispering to the moss as if it answered. You, who cradled baby dragons like they were made of breath and wonder, who told grizzled warriors they needed hugs and naps like it was an irrefutable fact.
You, who made bracelets out of reeds and tied them on Gobber’s wrist like he was some kind of forest king. You, who tried—earnestly—to teach Astrid how to hug trees, demonstrating with awkward sincerity: “Just…hug it like it’s your very stoic best friend.” You, who caused an uproar by weaving flower crowns and placing them gently—reverently—on the handles of every axe in the armory, muttering, “Even violence deserves softness.”
And every time Hiccup saw you—barefoot, bright-eyed, painting the air around you with unbothered joy—his logic sputtered out like a dying flame. You’d smile at a sunrise and his knees would forget how to stand. You’d murmur to a caterpillar and his ribcage would tighten like a vice. You’d laugh—gods, when you laughed—and his carefully forged armor would crack straight down the middle.
He was a Chief.
You were barefoot.
He strategized for war.
You named caterpillars.
And none of it mattered. Because when you walked by, humming nonsense and radiating warmth like you were born from sunlight, Hiccup forgot how to breathe. You were going to destroy him with kindness.
And the worst part was—he wanted you to.
The forge was stifling that afternoon, hot enough that the air shimmered in waves. Firelight clung to the walls, the clang of steel echoing like distant thunder. Hiccup’s sleeves were rolled to his elbows, one glove tossed on the table beside a half-finished prototype that mocked him with its crooked tailfin. His shoulders ached. His fingers were blistered. Patience was fraying like a snapped wire.
This latest design was failing again—still catching crosswinds, too fragile under pressure. Just like the last three. And he couldn’t afford to get this wrong. Not with Toothless depending on him. Not with time slipping through his calloused fingers like sand.
He exhaled sharply, running the back of his wrist across his forehead, smearing soot over his cheekbone. The forge hissed and spat beside him. His other hand tightened on a pair of tongs until the metal bit into his palm.
And then—
A laugh.
Soft. Light. Bubbling up from the air like spring water. So achingly out of place that he froze mid-motion, head snapping toward the doorway.
You stood there.
No—drifted there, like you'd just wandered out of a forest dream. One foot still outside, one inside the threshold. Barefoot, again. Arms full of tangled wildflowers and reeds, leaves dusted in your hair like they'd followed you out of loyalty alone. A dandelion crown tilted gently on your head, crooked, like you'd forgotten it was there.
Hiccup stared.
His mouth opened. Nothing came out.
You just smiled. Bright. Effortless. Like warmth had learned to wear a human face. “Hi,” you said.
He blinked. Swallowed. Stood up straighter. His heart tripped over itself and landed somewhere near his ribcage.
“Uh—” He cleared his throat, tried to remember how words worked. Wiped his hand again on his leather apron like that might erase the heat climbing up his neck. “Hey. Um. You’re—here. In the forge. Barefoot.”
You glanced down at your feet with a vague hum, then beamed brighter. “The floor’s warm. Like soup for my feet.”
“…Soup?” He was gone. No armor, no sarcasm, no clever retort. Just a puddle of confused affection and rapidly unraveling coherence.
But you were already walking in, barefoot against the stone, trailing pollen and grass like you were part of the wilds themselves. Your gaze drifted over his worktable, lingering on chaos like it was art. You stopped at one half-finished mechanism, gasped—genuinely, hand fluttering to your chest.
“This one looks like a seashell!”
Before he could stop you, your fingers reached—graceful, wrong side, sharp edge—“Careful—!”
His voice caught in his throat as he lunged. His hand wrapped around yours, gently but firmly, guiding your palm away from danger. The forge noise dimmed. The warmth of your skin bled through his fingers like something ancient.
And then you looked up at him. And smiled. “Thanks, Biscuit.”
He blinked. Once. Twice.
“…What?”
“Biscuit.” Your free hand tapped his nose, quick and fond. “You’re all warm and a little overcooked and you crumble under pressure but I like it. You're like a little Viking biscuit.”
Hiccup Haddock—Chief of Berk, breaker of chains, defender of dragons—absolutely malfunctioned. His jaw worked helplessly. His ears flushed red. So did his neck. Probably his knees. Somewhere, deep inside, Toothless let out a low, chuffing snort of smug amusement.
And then, casually, lethally, you tucked a daisy behind his ear.
“There.” You leaned back to admire your work. “Now you match.”
He didn’t move. Couldn’t. His hands were still slightly raised like he wasn’t sure whether to hold you or pray.
You smiled—soft, unaware, devastating. “You’re cute when you’re stressed, by the way.”
“I’m—I—” he managed. Barely. It was less a sentence, more a breath trying to be one.
You had already turned, twirling lightly away toward Toothless, who had sprawled out in the back corner like a smug witness to this complete meltdown. You knelt beside the dragon, scratching under his chin with the ease of someone who belonged.
“Did you miss me, big handsome shadow lizard?” you cooed.
And Hiccup just stood there. Flower in his hair. Heart in your hands. Brain somewhere in the general vicinity of “obliterated.”
He watched you like he was seeing sunlight for the first time after a long, cold war. And maybe he was. Because in the silence, in the haze of heat and soft laughter and dragons and daisies—
He realized something.
He was already yours.
And he was so, so doomed.

Thank GOD the HTTYD tv show exists. Imagine if Snotlout was your favorite character and you only had the movies lol? He is not in the movies that much so thank god race to the edge exists because Snotlout has his own episodes and is in it a lot. Race to the edge is too good to be true tbh

Ever since, the first trailer for the live-action was dropped, I’ve always wanted to create a scenario wherein animated Astrid met her live-action version. Astrid definitely deserves this begotten appreciation.

I have a bone to pick with the episode "Thawfest"..
So if you don't remember or just don't know, Thawfest is epsiode 12 of RoB. In short, the plot follows the riders who are competing in the yearly Thawfest competition. Every year Snotlout wins, however since this year involves dragons, Hiccup actually has a chance to win.
Now, this episode ABSOLUTELY ANNOYS THE HELL OUT OF ME.
First of all, I do not believe for a single second that Astrid didn't get a single point. That just makes no sense to me.
Now, moving on to my bigger issues with this episode. Why in the absolute hellsack was Astrid annoyed at Hiccup for being a lousy winner?? All his life, Hiccup has been the loser in like, most things in life. The dissapointment child of the chief, the dumb kid who always messes up, scrawny loser etc etc.. So why is it so horrible when he matches Snotlouts cocky attitude for ONE day???
Look, I love Snotlout and DESPISE Spitelout even more, but did we forget that Stoick was just as stress inducing, to the point verbally abusive to Hiccup up until the end of the 1st movie?? If we follow the timeline of the franchise, Thawfest is only a couple months after The Red Death. IT'S NOT LIKE STOICK HAD BEEN A GREAT PARENT FOR LONG!!
Again, I HATE Spitelout, but why would it be ok for Snotlout to be overly annoying about winning, but not Hiccup?
ALSO; Hiccup even tried to be polite with Snotlout by saying good luck and such, BUT SNOTLOUT DIDN'T EVEN ACCEPT IT.
Anywas hope you enjoyed me rambling about things that don't matter, and happy snoggletog to those who celebrate

heartstrings.
“in which Hiccup stumbles into a clearing full of music and dragons—and finds her, the girl with a voice like magic and a Deathsong by her side."
🎶 bardcore beauty x dragon boy · Hiccup x singer!reader 🌲 forest-clearing concerts · dragon-charmed lullabies · him? in love? shocker.
Tumblr media
The first time Hiccup saw her, she wasn’t even facing him.
She was seated cross-legged on a moss-covered stone, just at the edge of the hidden cove—the one no map ever marked, no rider ever mentioned. The trees arched inward like silent sentinels, moonlight dripping through the branches in liquid silver. A faint mist clung to the ground like breath still held. And there she was—braid loose, posture still, a weather-worn guitar balanced in her lap like it had always belonged there.
He’d been mid-descent with Toothless, circling back from a late patrol, when he caught the faint glimmer of firelight beneath the canopy. Curious, cautious, he landed without sound. And then he heard it—her voice.
It wasn’t loud. Not showy. It didn’t try to be anything. But it didn’t need to.
It curled through the air like incense, a warm hush of honey and smoke, brushing against his skin like memory. Every note was lived-in. Every word sounded like it had been plucked from the bones of the earth itself. Low. Lilting. Ancient. The sort of sound that made time feel irrelevant. That made even Toothless pause, ears tilted, eyes round.
Dragons surrounded her—half-dozing, wholly entranced. A Changewing lay curled with its tail flicking in rhythm. A baby Gronckle snored gently at her feet. And at the heart of it all: a Deathsong. An actual Deathsong—wings folded, eyes soft, a jeweled monster coiled at her back like she was treasure it had chosen to guard. And she?
She strummed with lazy precision, like she wasn’t aware of the power humming through her fingers.
And Hiccup—half-hidden behind a tree, heart hammering harder than it had during any battle—stood frozen. Spellbound. Like he’d wandered into something sacred. Something he didn’t deserve to witness.
It wasn’t just the song. It was her. The calm. The stillness. The contradiction of it all. She sang like someone who had known pain and made peace with it. Like she could take the broken pieces of the world and hum them into something whole again.
He should’ve left.
He didn’t.
He couldn’t.
He forgot to breathe.
“I’m sorry, are you drooling?”
The voice sliced through the quiet like a sword. Hiccup jumped so hard he almost fell.
“Astrid—shh—what—how long have you—?”
“Long enough to witness the Chief of Berk turn into a speechless fish,” she said, crossing her arms with the kind of smirk that meant this was going to be brought up later. “You alright there, lover boy?”
He flushed a shade that could rival lava. “I wasn’t—I wasn’t staring, okay, I was observing. I’m just being cautious—there’s a Deathsong right there—”
“Oh, absolutely,” Snotlout said, appearing out of nowhere like a fungus. “You’re clearly terrified. That’s why you’ve been standing here for five whole minutes, blinking like a lovesick Terrible Terror.”
“She has a Deathsong and a guitar,” Astrid added dryly. “Terrifying combo.”
“Wait, who is that?” Fishlegs whispered, eyes wide as he crouched beside them. “She’s not from the northern isles—we’d know someone with a dragon like that.”
“Oh, I don’t care where she’s from,” Ruffnut sing-songed, draping herself across a branch. “I care about the vibe. And the vibe is: Hiccup’s in love.”
“I am not—”
“Told you,” Astrid said, elbowing him.
Hiccup buried his face in his hand. “Can everyone please not make this a thing—?”
Too late.
“HE’S IN LOOOOOVE!” the twins howled in perfect harmony, darting between trunks like goblins with nothing to lose.
Toothless huffed beside him, utterly unimpressed. Hiccup sighed. “This is fine. This is great. This is—”
But when he looked back—She was gone. The stone sat empty beneath the moonlight. The dragons were dispersing like a dream fading from memory. Even the Deathsong had vanished into the trees.
No footprints.
No sound.
Just the fading shimmer of music that had already slipped into silence. And he stood there a while, heart louder than it should’ve been, wondering if he’d imagined the whole thing.
He hadn’t.
He’d see her again.
He just didn’t expect to find her again so soon—let alone hanging upside down from a tree.
It was late afternoon, shadows stretching long across the forest, sunlight trickling through the canopy in speckled, molten patches. Hiccup had meant to clear his head—just a quiet patrol along the northern ridge, nothing more. But he knew the sound of a Nadder’s frustrated snorting when he heard it. He knew the way birds scattered when someone fell out of a tree. And he definitely knew her laugh—sharp, unbothered, breathless with amusement, like she’d tripped headfirst into chaos and found it delightful.
She was a tangle of limbs and leather straps, half-suspended from a crooked branch by her boot, body swaying like a bell clapper, hair full of leaves and mischief. A nearby Nadder—her Deathsong’s smaller, moodier companion—snorted and tried yanking the boot loose with the precision of a grumpy uncle fishing a cat from a tree.
Hiccup blinked. “You okay up there?”
She twisted midair, eyes widening as if she hadn’t even noticed him, and grinned upside down. “Oh—hi!”
Then, with all the casual chaos of someone who’d clearly done this sort of thing often, she added, “Hey, you’re the chief. You’re not gonna arrest me for stealing from the Berkian fruit stash, right?”
Hiccup stifled a laugh. “Only if you keep calling it that.”
He stepped forward, already reaching to help. The Nadder snorted and stepped aside, recognizing him now. The boot came free with a gentle tug, and she tumbled to the ground like a disheveled comet—boots thudding into the moss, arms flung out like wings, her braid splayed across the forest floor. And she laughed. Not out of pain, or embarrassment, but because she could. Because falling out of a tree was apparently funny.
Gods.
Hiccup stared down at her, half-dizzy. “You alright?” he asked again, offering a hand.
She reached up without hesitation, fingers warm in his. “Perfectly intact. Unless my dignity counts.”
He tugged her upright, and she rose with the same impossible grace she always carried—like she belonged in motion, not stillness. Leaves clung to her braid, dirt smudged her sleeve, and her grin could’ve set the forest on fire.
“Nah,” he murmured, voice a little rougher than he meant. “I think you’re doing fine in that department.”
She raised a brow, eyes glinting. “Hiccup Haddock, was that a flirt?”
His heart stopped. “No! I mean—maybe? I mean—I just… I’ve seen you around.”
That came out worse. Gods. Brilliant.
“I know,” she said. Quiet. Steady.
He blinked. “You do?”
She nodded, brushing her fingers over the strap of her guitar. The Deathsong behind her coiled through the trees like mist, a low, contented rumble thrumming from its throat.
“You watch from the trees,” she added, eyes not unkind. “You think you’re subtle.”
He winced. “That obvious, huh?”
“Only to someone who’s watching back.”
That shut him up. Not because it embarrassed him—but because it undid him. The way she said it… not mocking, not smug. Just truthful. Like she didn’t just see him, but recognized something in him. And for a second, that scared the hell out of him.
She turned, fingers already brushing across her strings as she began to walk, boots crunching soft over the underbrush. Music followed in her wake—low, hypnotic, ancient. And then, as if remembering something, she paused.
Glanced over her shoulder. “You coming, chief? The dragons like company when I play.” She hesitated. Then—softer—“And I think you do too.”
He didn’t answer with words. Just fell into step beside her.
And later, when the clearing opened up into a soft hush of moss and stone, when half a dozen dragons lay curled like house cats around the edges of her music, when her voice rose low and haunting like an echo of something half-lost—
Hiccup stood beside her, barely breathing.
The way her fingers danced on the strings, the way her eyes closed as if the music wasn’t just sound but memory—it made the world feel quieter. Clearer. He swore the dragons were holding their breath too.
And in that stillness, something in his chest stung and warmed all at once.
Because this? This was her. Wild and messy and magic. Fruit-thief. Forest siren. Flame-hearted chaos, with leaves in her braid and kindness threaded through every note.
He didn’t know what it meant yet.
But gods help him, he wanted to find out.
Because he wasn’t just in trouble.
He was falling.
Hard.

Valka and Spitelout are siblings is my theory and that’s how Snotlout and Hiccup are cousins. It also explains why Spitelout disliked Stoick. He blamed him for his sister going missing and probably thought that Stoick wasn’t good enough for his sister. Also they both have the same eyes too.

Also they can be seen doing this here which is cute 👌🏻
