Fanfic Classics (inspired by zeziliazink and bubu0h)
I'm not even exaggerating when I say that these Drarry fics will always be famous to me! I believe I first read these around 2018, and I've reread them multiple times since 🤣 They're hits on AO3 for a reason and I cannot recommend them enough.

on a whim, looked up "books better than Harry Potter" bc that was how an online review of one of my favorite books described it, and a bunch of "read this if you liked Harry Potter!" things popped up. and let me just say
I really REALLY love the Underland Chronicles and Artemis Fowl but I don't think they're a good fit for someone whose only idea of what they might want to read next is "I liked Harry Potter"

I am finally going to read some PJO material.
Like Harry Potter, I can enjoy the fandom content without a super detailed understanding of book canon.
But unlike HP, Percy Jackson lacks the same analysis content and the tumble posts I see for PJO don't seem as in-depth and substantial like the HP posts that help supplement my canon understanding. I have watched days worth of HP Youtube videos about the books/movies, but the Youtube content for Percy Jackson is dry and barren as hell. And if I find anything, it's usually about the movies or tv series. There are no good videos criticizing the books or the author. I can easily find several meta essays on Snape, the marauders and other HP characters. Yet it's hard to find similar content on the struggles of demi-gods, the PJO worldbuilding etc. I am not saying they don't exist but I guess the PJO fandom is not as interested in English PHD level meta analysis as the Potterheads. I have literally seen theses based on the harry potter books. I read half of someone's multipage analysis of why Harmione wasn't a thing. I am not seeing this in PJO fandom at all.
I don't see myself reading the main series. Like ever. While I don't think reading it will make me angry like Harry Potter does, there are aspects of Percy's character that are beginning to annoy me and I have no interest in Percabeth. I also have no patience for cartoon villain Luke (give me tragic antagonist hero Luke blinded by pain and rage please).
I find the demigod diaries stories fascinating so I will read those. I found an online pdf so I will definitely be checking it out. Diary of Luke Castellan, Hermes' Staff and Son of Magic are on my to do list. I never cared about anyone other than Percy and Poseidon when I began getting into this fandom. But now, I have a love for Nico, Hades, Apollo (due to Perpollo honestly, if it wasn't for the ship I wouldn't give a damn about him), Rachel, Hermes and Luke.
I will admit that the snippets I have skimmed from Diary of Luke Castellan already make me feel so sad for Luke.

The Best Kept Secrets Are Curses
on Ao3 & FFN
If you don’t read WIPs, bookmark TBKSAC for later! You won’t regret it!
Every step she takes inside Malfoy Manor brings her closer to a sinister truth that threatens everything she holds dear.
Will her wit and determination be enough to see through Draco’s lies, uncover the dark secrets of Malfoy Manor, and above all, resist the urge to touch him? Or will she die trying?

genderswap/rule 63?
F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic. sorry, i literally won't read it. like the first thing i do when seeking out fic for a new ship on ao3 is filter out some tags, and this trope is one of the first to get the axe.
i think this might be a hold over from an era in fandom in the 00s when i would seek out fic for queer ships and stumble across a lot of genderbent fics where it was clear the author was like, "oh these characters are interesting and their dynamic is full of tension, but i can't write something queer!!" like obviously that wasn't all the fic out there, but it happened enough on the forums/sites i was on that i got a distaste for the trope and i've never gotten over it.
📚give me a fanfic trope and i’ll grade it📚

@thankyouforthev3n0m
the cats of ulthar is pretty fun, it features bad thing happening to cats but it turns out pretty okay in the end (TRYING SO HARD NOT TO SPOIL)*
the nameless city is one of the best "spooky ancient society ahh" hpl type things that he wrote, it's pretty orientalist tho
2. the quest of iranon is cool*
3. the other gods is fun, like a lot of these i feel like they're supposed to be scary but i just find them to be fun and kinda campy? it's odd *
4. the music of erich zann (i forgor the spelling) is cool
5. sweet ermengarde is great because it's absolutely not horror or fantasy and it's just this weird spoof satire story
6. herbert west- already explained why it's good
7. the unnamable is weirdly meta and for that reason i find it to be refreshing
8. in the vault is just kinda crazy and i like how simple the premise is
9. cool air is just wack. somehow hpl is afraid of both spanish people and AIR CONDITIONING in this and for that reason it is funny
10. pickman's model is iconic and hilarious and pretty well executed (idk if i am SUPPOSED to find it funny but it's great )
11. the strange high house in the mist- kinda just weird and atmospheric *
12. the dream quest of unknown kadath, i think is almost the longest thing he wrote. it's kind of like an extremely long winded and vibes based stoner fantasy
(okay i looked this up and i couldn't find any actual definition of the phrase stoner fantasy but i just mean it's weirdly trippy and dreamy fantasy)
anyways it's pretty good if you lean into it
13. the colour out of space, i already explained why it's good
the alchemist and the tomb aren't that good since he wrote them when he was so young but they're kind of neat to hear anyway (actually the tomb just makes me sad but in sort of an interesting way)
*part of this thing called the dream cycle which is all set in this special stoner fantasy dream world and shares names and places and events

book recommendations
@lavampira AND @narrativefoiltrope beloveds tagged me! thank you for the tag dani and i'm still soooo thrilled you loved goth western so much <3
tagging: @nerdferatum and @winesharksea and anyone else! tbh if you're a mutual of mine and you're on storygraph hmu, i love following other people and seeing what they're reading.
1. the last book I read:
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory by Caitlin Doughty — I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting to tear up from a memoir detailing her year working for a crematory, but it ended up being a very touching experience in understanding how Caitlin went from college graduate to eventual Ask a Mortician (one of my fave youtubers I miss her so much). It is a book that deals with death, both the traumatic and the relatively peaceful, so maybe not the LIGHTEST of reads, but one I actually wanna re-visit soon!
2. a book I recommend:
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin — I got recommended this series by @queerbrujas, and wow! I think if you're someone whose interested for a sort of, soft start into sci-fi, the elements are there and add value, but the emotional arcs and world building that unfolds is just so masterfully done. Once I really got into the first book, I tore through the next two in the series with relative ease.
3. a book that I couldn’t put down:
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo — This is just a super fun fantasy read!! It makes me wanna read more like, fast paced heist sort of novels. Each character in the ensemble has a strong personality so they all stand out from each other, but they complement each other well and offer interesting relationships with each other! I was so enamored by the book I had to run out to a store to buy the sequel the night I finished it.
4. a book I’ve read twice (or more):
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir — Funny thing is, I almost never re-read books because I feel like, good God I already have so many on my to be read list that I keep adding onto, I don't have time to re-read books. But this series has a ton of re-readability value, and it's almost necessary to take a second or third or fourth pass (depending on how insane you are) to pick up on the subtleties and the continuous narrative of themes that Muir puts down once you get past the memes and lesbians. I'm putting the whole series here because I've read Gideon the Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, and Nona the Ninth 2-3 times now and will probably re-read again before Alecto the Ninth comes out (impatient grumbling).
5. a book on my TBR:
Sterling House by Alix E. Harrow — Can I be completely honest, I actually don't know that much about this book. A librarian gave me a little book magazine when I was picking up some books one day and this book was on the cover. And the cover was just very pretty. I'm a very shallow person, you see. Also a bit like a bird because I see something pretty and I want it. But I also really wanna read Dungeon Meshi, so there's that too.
6. a book I’ve put down:
The Telling Room: A Tale of Love, Betrayal, Revenge, and the World's Greatest Piece of Cheese by Michael Paterniti — This book was honestly such a drag to read. Slow paced and at 80% in, I still hadn't gotten to the confrontation between the original cheesemaker and his best friend who sold his family's cheese and business for money, which is so hyped up. There's a point to it taking so fucking long, and the point is, that's apparently just how the people the author visited told stories. Long winding tales with bunches of offshoots. Probably great as an orally told story. Bit miserable as written word.
7. a book on my wishlist:
The Unclaimed: Abandonment and Hope in the City of Angels by Stefan Timmermans, Pamela Prickett — This one I saw in an e-mail for new books that came out in March, I think, and I have an interest in funeral practices and issues in modern day death management, thanks to being such a big fan of Caitlin Doughty. This book deals with the growing phenomenon of the unclaimed dead, which got touched upon in one of Caitlin's books, but not expanded upon. I try not to buy books if I can avoid it, but this one being so new and probably a little too niche for my library, I'll have to purchase it if I wanna read it!
8. a favorite book from my childhood:
??? — I don't think I have one to speak of that I can remember. I remember really being enchanted with some book about a girl finding a secret garden, so maybe it was Literally just The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgsen Burnett. Or like, I really liked the kid's book about the old lady who swallows a fly. Does that count???
9. a book you would give to a friend:
Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson — This book was recommended to me by a friend, specifically the audiobook version. And wow, yeah! I kind of judge audiobook, and really narrator quality, by this one! The narrator put so much love and emotion into narrating the book, which really highlighted the emotional high points and made them punchier. This book may have made cry a little because I am always a sucker about characters who feel they don't fit in anywhere, who feel odd, who feel different, but find support and community and love with other people who feel the same way. So, like, I would definitely give this book to someone if they wanted an introduction to how good audiobooks can be.
10. a book of poetry or lyrics you own:
The Essential Neruda: Selected Poems by Pablo Neruda — I bought the bilingual version of this book last year so I could see how Spanish is used in poetry, and then found out that he has a complex way of using Spanish so maybe it's not that useful. <3 And then I didn't read it at all, it's still on my bookshelf. Judging me. u_u I'll get to it one day.
11. a nonfiction book you own:
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado — Don't remember how this book got on my radar, but I went out and bought it and was so pleasantly surprised by how the style Machado uses in it to detail her memoir of an abusive relationship. So it's not a light read whatsoever, but just by style alone made it very evocative, it almost reads like literary fiction. I never thought about approaching memoirs or non-fiction in what I figure is a kind of non-standard way, so it stands out from the other non-fiction books I've read.
12. what are you currently reading:
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver — So this is apparently a sort of, like, modern retailing of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield, which I would have got, except like, I'm not that big of a literary nerd. So I had to look that up. Really, it caught my attention because I'm currently re-listening to a fave podcast, Old Gods of Appalachia, and this book is set in like, 80s-90s Appalachia so it's adjacent enough to my interest. So far it is masterfully written and has such a strong voice for the narrator and protagonist. It's also a thick ass book, well over 500 pages which is a bit out of my usual range, but it's been nice to sit down with a longer story that feels like I'm sitting down to listen to the guy tell me his life's story.
13. what are you planning on reading next:
??? — Bruv who knows? I don't plan these things until I'm done with whatever I'm reading now u.u. I have a little gay romance I bought during indie bookstore day and I also promised @sysba to read some other Chinese manhua with some other sad tragic gay boys. It'll probably be that one.

aslan frequently wears daniel's clothes ! daniel's ravenclaw ones mostly because hes a slytherin and its just out of place enough and he swears they're more comfortable, the scarf aslan's wearing in the picture is daniels !!
ever since his parents were sent to prison he and esme have been staying with aslan's family over breaks and holidays, they both have their own rooms there too :]
potions genius boyfriend and spells genius boyfriend..... more on the spells when i eventually make an aureus post !
aslan meticulously takes inventory of daniel's potion ingredients, he makes sure to restock every time he notices the other being low on something!!
daniel introduced aslan to somerild's (mc !! @sunglow-fae's oc my beloved <3) group of friends during second year, would have done so sooner but he was making sure he actually Did Want to do that
aslan's shorter than daniel slightly until 5th year when he isn't anymore
contrary to popular belief the two aren't joined at the hip and are often just doing their own thing, they're both frequently asked where the other is though ! expected to see one with the other even when they aren't actually by each other's side as often as people think
daniel's mother taught aslan how to cook and now he makes him some of the recipes she gave whenever he misses her <3
aslan confesses at the end of 4th year but they don't actually get together until 6th year ! there's a very long explanation for this but ..!

“the love was there. it didn't change anything. it didn't save anyone. there were just too many forces against it. but it still matters that the love was there.”
dumbledore going to sirius after barty's received the kiss - eyes grave and tired, showing his true age. characteristic glimmer snuffed out - and sirius thinks its something about harry, something about voldemort, that has him this worried. this defeated.
but "no," dumbledore says "no, sirius, this has nothing to do with voldemort or harry." and there's an underlying sadness to his words - some unspoken grief lingering in the air. soaking every movement till his limbs appear shaky and his movements unsure, practiced yet clumsy.
dumbledore is holding a box - plain wood, unremarkable in any way.
"this," he says "was given to me by barty crouch jr before the dementors could get to him. it was his last wish to have someone to give it to, someone to keep it safe."
sirius is confused, terribly so. he says as much, reaches out as if to slap the box away, might be dangerous - dumbledore shields it, carefully, as if it were made of glass.
"i had one last conversation with crouch, where he told me all i needed to know about its contents. i've come here now to relay to you the same knowledge he gave me and pass on this box to you, as you are the one that should get to have it."
sirius opens the box.
regulus black, fifteen years old, scowls at him from an old picture. regulus black, twelve years old, waves cheerfully. regulus black, seventeen years old, looks to the side nervously.
"tell me."
albus dumbledore speaks - quiet, as if the words could fall apart were he any louder - and something secret, long hidden away in dark rooms, is brought to light.

ooooh apparently the pjo show is out? or is it just the first episode? i'm not sure but. hm!!
#shrimp thoughts#once again i fail at being a human being because i first read a pjo book in HIGH SCHOOL yes high school#a friend i'm no longer in contact with lend me their books and i Ate them all up in like a week or so#and then i got so into it that i 1. got an english version of hoh online and 2. pre-ordered the polish version that iirc arrived before the#official premiere... so i read it quickly and passed it on to them and one other classmate i think? lol#i remember i had a fondness for octavian. funny little guy#now that i think about it... i don't... really... have any 'childhood series' that i'd get super nostalgic over if they got a tv show/remak#or wtv. i could read when the... 2nd? hp movie came out but for some reason i didn't like the Vibes (i only got into hp after i accidentall#caught the poa movie on my father's tv in 4th grade and at that point i think the book series was already over)#i was also into the witch comics and in ~2006 i think i got into manga and anime#but only specific series and back then it wasn't as easy for me to watch them in the first place so i can't relate to naruto kids either#when i started jpn studies everyone was an expert on the most popular shows and i... Was Not#tl;dr yea i have no idea what the fuck is wrong with me either. anyway i'd say i want to give the show a try sometime but unfortunately#the only way to get me to watch a show it to invite me over and put it on. otherwise it's 'oh yeah i'll add it to my list' city. forever.#(there's no list)
