Hello neighbors!
Damn- How are you? It's been a while!
I thought I posted the new design Tom here, I didn't 😱
So here it is! Welcome to Tom's new design! I don't guarantee it's 100% welcome home but hey! I updated it! And I plan to draw more of welcome home now "serious mode" because I was just doing comics and...I wasted time on that...I think, basically I got overwhelmed by how creative the fandom was and I'm not that creative to say the least but now I like Tom's design better, now it has logic and a mystery story to tell, I'm preparing a web. ..one I should say it lightly because I never bring something but I'm definitely working on it, including eastereggs and such, it's hard to work on a website 😫 but hopefully on launch day it can all work properly. I hope you like his new design!
Tom Sweetheart
🌺He was forgotten for a while... the old sheet was already covered in dust.
🌺When I designed him, I just wanted to ship him with Wally to explore some personal themes but now! I want to draw all the neighbours!
🌺Today, I present him for what he truly is: a toymaker or craftsman of mostly useful little things, calm and now with vitiligo due to the Terremoto drink and his human design.
🌺He has...25 years old.
🌺He/Him pronouns (I'm clarifying this because I've seen Tom mentioned as "They" for being somewhat feminine at times...but he considers himself 100% male just sometimes likes to try new things to look cute.)
🌺 Purple Vitiligo!
🌺Clothes: Cottagecore style.
🌺His character as such will always relate to flowers but the character himself is allergic.
🌺Maybe back in the WH era he didn’t fit the masculine standards because of his pink color… but now, at last, Tom is starting to live again 😏✨
🌺Noo-Noo it's the same beetle XD
🌺This is just 5% of what’s coming, his house and many little details are still waiting to be drawn.
🌺Tom human version:
Other things:
🌺Now it has a lateral side!
🌺The voice I imagine Tom to have is kind of edgy and husky, so I thought Wooly, that's the perfect voice he would have!
🌺Purple Vitiligo!
🌺 Personality: Tadano and Mario Hugo.

Hi!! I wanted to say that I loved reading about your journey of creating a personal website. I'm still unsure between Vercel and Netlify. I have a small question to ask. See, one of the reasons I want to make a website is to archive drawings and journal/sketchbook. Would you have any tips for creating an area on my website just for the diary/journal, which has tags, files for each entry, etc.?
Bello!
Really happy to hear about your interest in websites! I want everyone to make their own site so I don't have to log into social media and get instant tummyaches ♥
Vercel vs Netlify: I think I settled on Vercel for absolutely no reason whatsoever. I just made a site on Netlify, then tested on Vercel, and now I have like 5 websites on Vercel so I just kept using it LOL. I'm sure a more tech-savvy person would know the difference - I think they have certain integrations with specific programs.
Creating a diary or journal with tags:
There's a couple of different ways you can do that, with different levels of work needed.
you got me yapping again:
This sadgrl tutorial might be outdated and may or may not work, but explains the process better than I can.
Easiest: make a journal on Dreamwidth, or another blogging site (wordpress??) that allows easy tags and RSS feed, and embed that RSS feed onto your site.
This requires almost no HTML set-up, and the easiest to organize tags, but you don't truly have the data on your own site since it's just embedded.
When I snuck into a web design class at college, this was one of the methods that the professor used for a blog within a portfolio site LOL.
Shit like wordpress is what a LOT of ~professional~ sites do for their blog section. They code it separately from the main site haha. It's the most popular thing, but not necessarily the best. And wait til you read on what the CEO of wordpress has been having meltdowns about... he owns tumblr too!
It's made with a tutorial for Neocities if that's what you use.
Medium: Set up zonelets.
It will require some HTML and JS editing, but will help automate making headers/footers for each page of a blog.
I've never used it myself, but I see other people speak highly of it.
HARD FOR ME CUZ I'M A GORILLA: I believe a lot of professional web devs will slap your face with their coding cock until you use a static site generator (SSG) to make your site.
You will need some coding knowledge to set up the tagging system since it doesn't come with it enabled by default. But it's made explicitly to be an alternative to big Static Site Generators which are...
It requires some more intimidating knowledge, because it's a lot of scripts that turn files that are not HTML/CSS/JS into plain HTML.
Also you have to use the command line, and that doesn't come with buttons that tell you what you can do. You have to copy/paste all that shit or memorize the code to 'dev build astro' and it all looks silly.
I've used Eleventy, and now am using Astro. Other people use Hugo or Jekyll or some other stuff with crazy names like Glup Shitto. I hate all these sites cuz none of the words mean anything to me. This is a common theme for me and tech. I don't know what NODES or CONTENT or ISLANDS are!!!
I had the most success attempting to learn how to use a SSG by downloading a template and altering it with github + VScodium. Here's the template page for Astro. You click on a theme you like, and it takes you to its github page. (If you don't want to use evil Microsoft stuff sorry. Skip this entire section.) Follow the instructions on the page for "forking" the glup shitto. When it tells you to run commands, I run those commands through the terminal window in VScodium. These tutorials never tell you what these commands do cuz they assume you already know. Usually those commands automatically install the files you need onto your computer, and create the final files.
You can see my wip here for a "tag system" that SHOULD show members of a web listing haha but I don't know what I'm doing and I have a reading disorder AND don't know cumputer good.
THEORETICALLY this will be the simplest and easiest way to maintain tags and files, because after you set it up you just have to write the "content" of the blog page. And you don't have to set up the header/footer ever again. I see the vision, and potential, but I am not there yet when it takes me 5 hours a day to figure out what any of the words in the documentation mean and I don't want to ask an actual tech person cuz they will be like 'obviously just press the Blip on the Repository and then Suck My Ass in the command line".
(side note I haven't updated fujofans in like a year cuz I'm struggling with this part to make updating easier).
Con: the final HTML/CSS code is really ugly if it's "minified", and a lot of themes use """"""professional"""""" CSS libraries like Bootstrap and Tailwind that I honestly think are ugly cuz that's what every fuckin' tech website uses to style their pages and make them look Professional and Minimalist with stupid code like style="500-w dark-gray-balls D-cup-bra" on every single element. Even Toyhouse uses Bootstrap. Eugh!
But maybe you're smarter than me and can wrangle these things better!
That was really long. Woops. I hope you can slug through this wall of text and find something helpful. Feel free to email me if you have any more specific questions. I may or may not be helpful.
If someone else sees this and has better suggestions for making BLOGS, please chime in. I'm begging you.

Session Type: Panel Presentation
Presented by: Darryl Brown Jr. (he/him), Senior Director of Programs and Advocacy, Black and Pink National. Kenna Barnes (she/they), Advocacy Manager, Black and Pink National
Recorded: Yes
This year, Barricades Con is donating all profits to Black and Pink International.
Black & Pink National is a prison abolitionist organization dedicated to abolishing the criminal punishment system and liberating LGBTQIA2S+ people and people living with HIV/AIDS who are affected by that system through advocacy, support, and organizing. Programming includes wrap-around services for those coming out of the carceral system such as but not limited to workforce development, transitional housing, newsletters to inside members and penpal matching, nationwide Chapters, youth-led research about young people living with HIV, and programming for and by people who do sex work.
Sex work as an issue sits clearly at the intersection of reproductive justice, prison abolition, and trans and queer liberation. Black trans women who engage in sex work face some of the highest rates of policing and surveillance, directly interfering with their ability to access safety and autonomy. We know that when we center the needs of Black trans women, especially those who engage in sex work, we are inherently able to address the needs of other system-impacted people along the way.
The Sex Worker Liberation Project (SWLP) is a collaboration between Black and Pink National and a network of current and former LGBTQIA2S+ people who do sex work across the country. This sex worker led group moves with the intention of building community, providing resources, and cultivating self advocacy tools. The SWLP is on a mission to tackle the urgent and multifaceted issues confronting sex workers, with a specific emphasis on the challenges faced by Black and Brown LGBTQIA2S+ sex workers.

Beat by Beat: a Les Mis 2012 Deconstruction
Friday, 22:00-23:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Eli
Recorded: Yes
To quote Eli: “As an avid Les Mis fan and also someone with an MFA in screenwriting, I find the script for the Les Mis 2012 movie absolutely fascinating. The choices they made, the added brick scenes, the added song, the pacing, the dialogue, the shots selection—all of it contributes to a very interesting adaptation that our fandom owes a huge debt of gratitude to (whether we like it or not 🥲). I would like to take an audience through the 9 major beats of a screenplay, apply it to Les Mis 2012, and share my thoughts on what the filmmakers did right for this adaptation and what they did wrong. I’ll compare it to the Les Mis musical (the direct source material) as well as the Brick (the secondary source material) for insight on the choices they made!”
History Researcher Meetup

Reflecting on Directing Les Mis
Saturday, 16:00-17:00 UTC

In Cait’s words: “I directed an amateur production of Les Mis at the end of last year, and would love to talk about how that went and share snippets from the show and behind the scenes. This will include talking about adapting Les Mis for the space and budget, approaches to certain scenes, dual casting lead roles, and probably raving about my lovely cast.”
The Fallibility of History in Les Misérables
Saturday, 16:00-17:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Syrup
Recorded: yes
Throughout Les Misérables, Hugo often reminds readers that what they are reading is derived from some form of documentation or hearsay. While this serves to provide credibility to the tales he is sharing, there are certain moments where Hugo opts out of describing exact details, despite his efforts at a historically-accurate record. In this panel, I will take a look at these instances where Hugo either addresses or obfuscates these events, and how by doing so, he reveals the fallibility of history, and highlights how history documentations are not always as reliable as they seem. Thesis: By crafting Les Misérables as a form of historical documentation, Hugo reveals the fallibility of history, and readers are able to understand how history and history documentation are not always as reliable as they seem.
Break
Saturday, 17:00-18:00 UTC
What Horizon: Tragedies, Time Loops, and the Hopefulness of Les Amis
Saturday, 18:00-18:30 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Percy
Recorded: yes
In Percy’s words: “I have directed a staged reading of the play and will have video clips to show! My play is focused on the rebellion and Les Amis; it aims to give the barricades the attention they often lack in adaptation and develop the individual characters of the insurgents. I’m working to make this episode of the Hugo novel and its historical context accessible to audience members who may not be familiar with the source material, while hopefully also bringing something new to the story for longtime fans.
One aspect of the story I’m particularly interested in examining is the persistent sense of hope associated with the barricades, despite the insurgents’ eventual defeat and the previous failure of the July Revolution. Linking the seemingly cyclical process of revolution and restoration, the metatheatrical tradition of tragedies aware of their own repetition in performance before the audience, and the nature of Les Misérables itself as a story that has been told and retold countless times, I hope to show the audience the worth of the insurgents’ struggle and the importance of their continued efforts. Many adaptations construe the rebellion as futile or as solely a tragic story, so I would like my adaptation to counter that idea, as Les Amis grapple with the meaning of their sacrifice and the impacts of their actions.
In a presentation, I would discuss these ideas with reference to Hugo’s original text and the ways in which the rebellion has been changed in adaptation, as well as other works that inspired me (namely Hadestown and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead). I’d discuss the choices I made in my adaptation process and show clips from the staged reading, touching on the different characters and the historical setting as well as the overarching themes with which I engaged.”
Cosette: A Novel, The (Fanmade) Sequel to Les Misérables
Saturday, 18:30-19:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: IMiserabili
Recorded: yes
This presentation is a deep-dive into the 1995 fanfiction “Cosette” by Laura Kalpakian. It will include a short background on the author and the publication, a summary of the plot, an analysis of represented historical events in the work, character analyses and comparisons to the source material and other Les Mis adaptations, and memorable quotes.
Musical Eponine and Grantaire in song and lyric edits: Personal research on their development
Saturday, 18:00-19:00 UTC
Session Type: Panel Presentation
Presented by: Ruth Kenyon
Recorded: yes
In Ruth’s words: “I’m an older musical Les Misérables fan who has watched the show develop from its beginnings at the Palace Theatre. I have a special interest in how the lyrics and the characters have changed over time. As plenty of people know now, I am also writing a book on the musical using these experiences. I’m working on Eponine’s chapter at the moment, and while I know fans have a lot of love for as she is now, I feel quite upset to see what happened to her as she was developed from the original French version of the musical. She seems to have lost quite a lot of emotional agency along the way. Grantaire has also changed over time; he was cut before the previews and there was a big re-write of his character when the show went to Broadway, but I really like what they have done with his character. I’ll provide examples of all this detail with material from my book and (trying) to sing bits of lyrics to explain what has happened to the characters.”
Barricades as a Tactic: How Do They Work?
Saturday, 19:00-20:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Lem
Recorded: No
This session will explore the tactical and strategic uses of barricades, with an eye towards what to consider when writing both canon-era fanfiction and modern AUs. After all, the strategic goals towards which the barricades were used in canon-era urban warfare were often quite different from the strategic goals of similar-looking tactics in contemporary protest movements. Core components of the session will be a map-based analysis of July 1830, a comparison with June 1832 highlighting strategic goals and considerations canon-era characters would have, and an exploration of various parallels among contemporary protest tactics (which may or may not *look* like barricades).
Meetup: Musical Fans
Saturday, 19:00-20:00 UTC
Session Type: Social Meetup
Presented by: Erin
Recorded: No
A casual place to meet up with other fans and discuss the musical!
Break
Saturday, 20:00-21:00 UTC
Why is There a Roller Coaster in Les Mis? The Strange History of the Russian Mountains
Saturday, 21:00-22:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Peyton Parker/Mellow
Recorded: Yes
In Les Miserables there is an actual canon scene where Fantine rides a roller coaster. How did a roller coaster end up in Paris in 1817? And why did this ride, one of the world's first wheeled Roller Coasters, make a cameo in Victor Hugo’s novel?
It’s “Les Mis Meets Defunctland.”
We’re going talk about the earliest origins of the Russian Mountains, the fascinating history behind how they came to France, their many connections to the political turmoil of the time period, what they felt like to ride, why they were shut down, how they fell into obscurity, and why Victor Hugo included them in Les Miserables. It’s time for a roller coaster digression.
Fanfic Round Robin
Saturday, 22:00-23:00 UTC
Session Type: Social Game
Presented by: Featheraly
Recorded: No
Participate in a round robin to help write a fic together!
Obscure(-ish) Les Mis Adaptations To Watch
Saturday, 23:00-23:30 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Pureanon
Recorded: Yes
Les Mis has been adapted many times over the years, and this means there’s a lot of adaptations to enjoy. Because of this, a lot of adaptations are underviewed or underappreciated. I’d like to use this panel to discuss some of my favorites/the most unique — 1925, 1948, 1967, and 1995. These are all very different, and aside from all being ones I enjoy, they’re fascinating looks at how different countries and different time periods adapt this story.
The adaptations I’ve chosen are both some of the best and some of the worst out there, but they’re all unique. 1925 is one of the most faithful adaptations out there, and it uses the medium of silent film to full effect. 1948 has Valean get shot at multiple times in the opening minutes, and the revolutionaries fight with BARRELS in the barricade. 1967 is half one of the best Anglophone Les Mis adaptations ever, and half the drunkest. 1995 is more of an adaptation of how people react to Les Mis as a story than a straightforward adaptation, and it’s one of the most beautiful and unique versions out there. I intend to show a clip from each adaptation, so people can get a little taste of what each adaptation is like.
Recovery: a Fanfic Live Read
Saturday, 22:30-23:00
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Eli, Barri
Recorded: Yes
A full cast will live read a Les Mis fanfic written specifically for the con.
Compared to Some People Grantaire is Doing Just Fine (No, Really)
Saturday: 22:00-23:00
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Ellen Fremedon, Pilferingapples
Recorded: Yes
Grantaire and Marius are the two characters on the fringes of the Friends of the ABC, connected to the group by social ties rather than sincere political belief. In this panel, Pilf and Ellen will discuss the two characters as narrative foils, touching along the way on the problem with Great Men, bourgeois inaction, what it means to have the republic as a mother, and dying for love–plus those two pistols in Marius’s pocket.
Preliminary Gaities
23:00-24:00 UTC
Session Type: Social Game
Presented by: Rare, Percy, and ShitpostingFromTheBarricade
Recorded: No
Preliminary Gayeties is the chapter where Grantaire gets drunk with Joly and Bossuet before the barricades. It is perfect for a drinking game.
In keeping with personal tradition, Rare, Percy, and ShitpostingFromTheBarricade will bring you a second year of our dramatic reading of the “Preliminary Gayeties” chapter of the brick. all while following specified drinking game rules (including classics such as “drink for brick quotes that appear commonly in fanfiction,” “pretentious classical references,” and “drink/eat when characters drink/eat”), and enjoying snacks mentioned in the chapter as they are mentioned. Everyone is invited to participate by reading, eating, and drinking along with this activity!
Sunday, June 14th

Femme/butch: Dynamics of Gender and Attraction in Les Mis
Saturday, 15:00-15:30 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Eléna
Recorded: Yes
In Eléna’s words: “This is a presentation about parallels between femme/butch dynamics and les mis! The focus is on Marius, Cosette and Eponine and their individual gender presentation and attraction. There will be a focus on the original text, but I will also talk about headcanons & representation in the fandom space! I’m a femme myself, but I’ll try to incorporate butch and transmasculine viewpoints!”
Lee’s Misérables: Jean Valjean, Confederate Hero
Saturday, 15:30-16:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation
Presented by: Sarah C. Maza
Recorded: Yes
Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables (1862) was as big a success in the United States as elsewhere in the world upon publication, hailed throughout the young nation as the commanding masterpiece of modern French literature. Why would a novel that celebrates violent insurrection and radical republican ideals be so warmly received in America? One of the (many) answers to that question is that the novel appeared in the midst of the Civil War, and that it provided engrossing reading to the many soldiers stuck in place for weeks or months in camp, hospitals, and prisons. Most surprising, though, is the evidence of Les Misérables’ appeal to Confederate soldiers (who jokingly called themselves “Lee’s Misérables”), as Hugo was on record as an ardent abolitionist. My paper will illustrate and explain the paradoxical appeal of Hugo’s novel in the South in two contexts: first, I will draw attention to the ways in which Confederate nationalists likened their cause to the European Revolutions of 1848; and second, I will explain the novel’s resonance within what Wolfgang Schievelbusch has called the “culture of defeat,” the emotional resonance, in some historical contexts, of narratives of doomed causes and heroic failure.
Guest of Honor: Luciano Muriel, playwright of “Grantaire”
Sunday, 16:00-17:00 UTC
Session Type: Guest of Honor
Presented by: Luciano Muriel
Recorded: Yes
Panel about the details of the creative process behind the show Grantaire, from the discovery of the character during the playwright’s first reading of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables to the opening night of the staging at the Teatro Pradillo of Madrid. Why Grantaire? Why a dramatic monologue? Why include Amaral songs? What did the awards and subventions entail? All the answers to these and many other questions.
Break
Sunday, 17:00-18:00 UTC
1848 in Chile: The Society of Equality and the Siege of La Serena
Sunday, 18:00-19:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academc Presentation
Presented by: Duncan Riley
Recorded: Yes
While the Revolutions of 1848 are traditionally seen as a European event, they had a powerful influence in Latin America. In Chile in particular, university students who studied in France during the revolutions would lead a movement to oust the conservative dictatorship that had ruled the country since the 1830s. Inspired by the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine and the ideals of utopian socialism, a group of Chilean intellectuals and artisans founded “The Society of Equality,” a cross-class political club dedicated to creating a democratic and participatory republic. Inspired by these ideals, in 1851 the citizens of La Serena, a mining town in northern Chile, declared their independence from the central government. Members of the Society of Equality transformed La Serena into the torchbearer of their vision of a new “democratic republic” that would restore civil liberties and grant greater autonomy to Chile’s provinces and municipalities. In defense of these principles, La Serena endured a months-long siege by government forces. The conflict inscribed itself within broader international dynamics of revolution and empire, as the British Royal Navy Intervened on the side of the government, while French immigrants built barricades to defend La Serena from invasion. Ultimately, then, La Serena and the Chilean Revolution of 1851 provide a fascinating window into the transatlantic exchanges of ideas that drove movements of democratic reform in both Europe and Latin America during the Revolutions of 1848.
The Unknown Light Examined
Sunday, 18:00-19:00 UTC
Session Type: Fan/Academic Presentation
Presented by: Madeleine
Recorded: Yes
In the tenth chapter of Les Misérables, Bishop Myriel sets out to perform the last rights of Conventionnel G, a man reviled by all of Digne for having served on the body that voted to execute the king during the French Revolution. The bishop and the dying man debate the nature of equality, divine authority, and resistance to oppression. G’s fierce defense of the French revolution and Myriel’s staunch condemnation of political violence represent diametrically opposed philosophies, but the two men have more in common than first appears. They are both men of faith, in their own way, called to serve by their profound love for humanity. Intensely shaken by this realization, the bishop kneels before the dying sinner and asks his blessing.
What does this role reversal signify? How do Myriel and G’s conceptualizations of God and morality compare, and why does Hugo seek to reconcile them? To answer these questions, this panel investigates the thematic implications of this chapter. We’ll dissect the characters’ debate, discussing the historical and religious context that informs their moral frameworks—and Hugo’s depiction of them. Drawing on analysis by literary scholars, we’ll situate Hugo’s portrayal of the bishop and the conventionnel within this same context, evaluating the extent to which G is based on the Abbé Grégoire. We’ll also examine the impact of this chapter on Bishop Myriel’s characterization and symbolic role in the novel. Lastly, we’ll explore how “The Bishop in the Presence of an Unknown Light" serves as a political and philosophical thesis for Les Misérables.

My Path Through 2020
2020 has been a huge year for me (in some good ways, and some challenging).
My Grimoire
In April this year, I started building my digital grimoire. I knew fairly early on that this was something I wanted - as much as I love physical books, they’re not so easy to search, and they don’t support hyperlinks!
I spent hours and hours searching through existing website, blog and wiki platforms, as well as other Content Management Systems, but I couldn’t find anything that functioned quite the way I wanted! So I decided to code a website from scratch!
Aside from early-2000s social media and a frustrating foray into super-basic web design in uni, I really had no experience with coding. Luckily, my partner is a web developer and software engineer, so they were able to assist with the original basic setup, and pointing me in the right direction to figure out how I wanted to proceed from there. I’ve learned: How to code in HTML, CSS, and Markdown; how to work in Visual Studio Code (instead of just writing in plain-text in Notepad) AND manually customise the theme (because I’m picky about colours/etc); how to use Hugo and Git (to a very basic extent); best practice for constructing website layouts, and how to make designs responsive (so they can be used on screens of any size); how to work with meta tags, like titles, descriptions, thumbnails, and how to set the image/title/description to show up when you share a link on social media. It’s been wild!
I’ve also done a crap-tonne of research and writing. As an Aussie, it’s incredibly difficult to find information that’s relevant to practicing outside of a Euro- or US-centric context, so I’ve focused really hard on this aspect, and especially on local/native herbs. I’ve written 75 herbal pages, 22 of which are related to plants which are endemic to Australia; plus a bunch of other information (including a “quick” 3,300-word write-up on practicing witchcraft in Australia).
Druidry
My desire to create a locally-appropriate practice lead me to Julie Brett’s book “Australian Druidry” at the start of this year, which in turn started my discovery of and interest in neo-druidry.
Historical context: Druids are obviously iconic characters from Iron Age Celtic societies. As Druidic traditions were entirely oral (it’s rumoured that it would take upwards of 20 years to complete training as a Druid, due to the sheer amount of learning involved), we only have extremely limited information available about this practice. In early Industrial-age Britain, some folks inspired by their idea of druidry created Revival Druidry as a counter-culture movement, focused on reconnecting with Earth and animistic beliefs - Interestingly these groups were primarily Anglican! This seems to have started mixing with occultism and ritual magic in the 19th century, and started becoming more spiritual/religious in the 20th century, particularly overlapping with Celtic Reconstructionism. While some folks have claimed otherwise, modern druidic practices are not authentic (or reflective of) ancient/Iron Age practices, because we just literally don’t know much about them. So when I refer to studying/practicing druidry, I am specifically referring to this in the context of Revival/Neo-Druidry.
I started being drawn to the concept of some of the formal study offered by various druidic groves, because sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of structure and direction! While some groves have programs that are very focused around the biosphere they’re located in (obviously not so helpful when they’re located across the globe) and/or various Celtic mythologies and reconstructionist practices (not so much my jam), others have programs that are much more focused around building something around your own biosphere! I have heard lots of great things from Aussie about OBOD’s courses, however this is printed and mailed monthly by post, which is a massive additional cost, has an environmental impact, and shipping has been ridiculously affected by the pandemic (although they are apparently planning to launch a digital course in 2021!).
Having lost my job due to my disabilities/chronic illnesses at the end of July, I decided to bite the bullet and join the Ancient Order or Druids and commence my First-Degree studies with them! Their curriculum is largely based around forming a relationship with Earth (including learning about your own biosphere), tracking annual cycles of the Sun (observing/celebrating the equinoxes and solstices), developing a meditative practice, and exploring a Bardic, Ovate, or Druidic skill. As a neurodivergent/disabled/chronically ill human, the flexibility was really appealing, and I was also super-impressed that they had a whole page on how various members had adapted things to be more accessible for them!
My Wheel of the Year
This is something I’ve been working on since I first started dipping my toe into witchcraft, but I feel like I’ve hit a major milestone on it this year!
It’s been such a huge challenge, since the “traditional” neo-pagan wheel comes from Wicca, with a lot of inspiration from Celtic and Nordic practices and celebrations, and is very focused around the seasonal cycles of western Europe. I’m not Wiccan, my practice is entirely secular, and even if you ‘flip/rotate’ that wheel, it really doesn’t reflect the seasonal cycles where I live in Australia.
I was looking at just celebrating/observing the solstices and equinoxes, but found that I really liked the balance of having a a point in-between those - plus it’s kinda nice to be celebrating at the same time as the rest of the community. My biggest struggle once I got past that was what to call my Cross-Quarter celebrations! I really didn’t vibe with the Celtic names, so I struggled with this so hard, for so long... but I finally got there recently, and it honestly feels like such a huge achievement 🥰
I wrote about this here, for anyone who’s interested.

Fougere Royale from Houbigant | JaysBeard.com
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkaq5wyM-2Q Fougere Royale EAU DE PARFUM * Reengineered from its 1882 regal compound to compliment modern rigors and landscapes, Fougère Royale retains its discriminating, elegant, noble, refined pulse and its pleasant, pastoral beauty. The perfectly-blended perfume is redolent of green, fragrant sedge, hardy foliage, and delicately-curled fronds of shaded, dense, moist woodlands. Sweet vernal grasses suggest the freshly-released essences of trampled, crushed, trodden, dewy verdure, with an intense hint of newly-mown hay. Size: * 100ml $210 First introduced in 1882, Fougère Royale completely revolutionized the world of perfumes and established modern perfumery as it exists today. Fougère Royale was the first “fougère” (or fern-like) perfume ever created, establishing a completely new fragrance family which still remains today the most popular family in men’s fragrances: Brut by Fabergé, Paco Rabanne, Azzarro, Boss by Hugo Boss and Prada by Prada for Men belong to this family. But even more important Houbigant was also the first perfume house to discover how to isolate particular molecules from natural raw materials and more specifically the coumarin, which is isolated from the tonka beans. Today and in character with our past, the House of Houbigant has revived this outstanding classic in an elegant and contemporary style. The formula has been re-worked masterfully in collaboration with the perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux, head perfumer at Givaudan. A word from Rodrigo: “I am absolutely thrilled, and feel extremely privileged, to have been summoned by the House of Houbigant to participate in this part of the Fougère Royale being reborn. As a perfumer, I can say this is a one-in-a-life-time gift.” Fougère Royale opens with an uplifting cocktail of sparkling citrus oils that blends into an aromatic bouquet of Mediterranean herbs, where lavender and Moroccan chamomile oil dictate the tempo. A redolent heart follows, where the floral-spicy "Rondeletia" accord is revealed through rich geranium nuances and warm spices. A floral intermezzo showcases rare rose essences and absolutes, spiked by pepper, cinnamon and carnation. Finally, a grand finale of earthy, ambery and woody harmonies, where moss notes join a sensual patchouli theme enriched by warm coumarinic undertones of tonka beans and clary sage absolute. All the details present on the original design have been incorporated but the over all look has been revisited to make it more masculine and modern. Each little square is cut in the glass in a diamond shape, which gives more luminosity to the bottle. The details on the shoulders of the bottle maintain the art deco spirit of the beginning of the1900s The front and back of the bottle have a cushion/ curved effect that gives the bottle a more opulent effect. To celebrate the rebirth of this inimitable fragrance, we have decided to sublime the formula into a Perfume version. To make Fougère Royale Perfume we have used exclusively the finest quality of raw materials that exists. The Fougère Royale perfume edition is showcased into a hard-wood lacquered box on which the logo Fougère Royale has been carved. The Line: Fougère Royale Eau de Parfum 100ml and Fougère Royale Pur parfum 100ml. 🔔 Looking to enhance your style and well-being? What’s the castle?: Big freaking palace made of purple crystal, aesthetic changes depending on Lo’s long-term mental and emotional state, just... floating off the shore of Lanai. The thing only tangibly exists when Lo’s in close proximity to it. It acts as both a repository for the power she can’t handle and just a fun little eldritch paradise in the making. Time moves faster in there than outside. There’s a garden underneath it.
Who’s Esme?: That’s me. I write the blog. Hello!
My sideblogs!

i am still incredibly salty that tumblr started charging for doing the cname dns redirect thing which takes them very little resources. but like honestly i've thought back through it now and if you're a "normal person" who "wants a blog website" paying the tumblr tax and making a nice custom theme costs less than renting wordpress hosting or whatever the fuck.
there's been a lot of discussion about this on mastodon where people have been talking about how there's a paradox of the tools that are used for making "simple websites" have an unreasonable knowledge barrier to being used by normal people (like hugo, which does themes by... having you git clone a repository as a submodule, which from a layman point of view is a little bit unhinged and way fucking confusing if you don't know what git is) and in the other direction how the tools that are simplest for regular people to use require a pretty significant amount of administration effort that most technically astute people don't want to obligate themselves to doing for free, since wordpress admin is kind of a nightmare compared to just having 'static' html pages. it's really disappointing that no one's really filled in the gap and made something like adobe dreamweaver for the modern web or something (i'm partly saying this because if there is something i've missed i want someone to be annoying and inform me)
like, honestly, the best 'layperson' option for hosting an independent website with very little cost is to manually write the html which is like.. doable, but does not work with how most people use computers in the modern day really. 20 years ago it was acceptable i guess but now we have the ability to make things that are simultaneously simpler and more powerful

The enshittification of Squarespace and why you should own your own website
Private equity completes another stroll through the web-hosting world (after WP Engine), and thus today begins (or perhaps continues) the enshittification of Squarespace.

As my friend Ori said:
“Nothing like PE to ruin something.”
Private equity seriously is ruining so many beautiful things on the internet (see Bending Spoons) because founders and creators often struggle make a living online, they seek growth and revenue and find it hard, so they sell to PE because PE can make money online: gut the product, layoff staff, raise prices.
Welcome to capitalism, you and I with our little savings can’t stand in the way of it, but in the light of Squarespace going to PE, I’m reminded:
Two of our business websites being on Squarespace
The other one being on Wordpress (but not WP Engine)
And finally, of my own personal philosophy to POSSE and build things yourself.
Jason Kottke shared this a few days ago from Molly White:
“The short-term solution to these problems is a little-known acronym called POSSE. Short for Post (on) Own Site Syndicate Elsewhere, it’s not a protocol or even a piece of software, but rather a philosophy.”
There’s never been a better time to build your own house on the internet—your own website and blog—and never have to worry about Squarespace, Meta, Google, or Apple anymore. You’ll no longer need to worry about being cancelled or banned. Prices going up, or products being gutted. You get to choose your destiny. Your home is your home.
How to?
Learn HTML.
Learn Markdown.
Learn to host and build your own website and blog, your own home on the Internet.
For HTML, check out the beautifully made HTML For People:
“HTML isn’t only for people working in the tech field. It’s for anybody, the way documents are for anybody. HTML is just another type of document. A very special one—the one the web is built on.”
And for Markdown, it’s just plain boring text with a few additions. The best place to start IMHO is with the document that started it all in 2004:
“The overriding design goal for Markdown’s formatting syntax is to make it as readable as possible. The idea is that a Markdown-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it’s been marked up with tags or formatting instructions.”
Search online for other Markdown tutorials, there’ll be millions, but just start learning to write and format in an open language, one that isn’t owned by Microsoft (.docx) or others.
From there, start investigating building and hosting your own website, like the one you’re reading this on. Hosted on Micro.Blog, built using Hugo, and Tiny Theme.
In 20 years, you’ll be thankful that you started building your own house online today.

Xilla Releases New Single: “Here Lies The Truth”
Birmingham-based rock band Xilla has released their latest single, “Here Lies The Truth.” This track highlights the band’s diverse sound, combining energetic metal with the textured nuances of alternative rock, resulting in music that is both powerful and melodically engaging.
The band consists of Leigh Oates on vocals, as well as Chris Flanagan and Greg Pullin on guitars. In addition, Rich Pullin is on bass duties and Hugo Riberio is on drums. The synergy between them is really undeniable, as they managed to create a very personable tone with tons of attitude and vibe.
“Here Lies The Truth” is notable for its play on words, juxtaposing “Lies” and “Truth” to create a thematic contrast reflected in both the music and lyrics. The song merges a variety of influences, integrating the raw energy of metal with melodic elements of alternative rock. This approach results in a track that is both immediate and nuanced.
A distinctive feature of this single is the inclusion of a full string arrangement. The decision to incorporate orchestral elements adds depth to the song and demonstrates the band’s effort to challenge themselves creatively. Many rock bands have opted to experiment with adding orchestral components to some of their songs for more emphasis and texture. In this case, the formula really works and the combination is spot-on, bringing even more emotional intensity to underline the lyrics.
Fans of Alter Bridge, Sevendust, Iron Maiden, and Metallica may find “Here Lies The Truth” particularly appealing. The track’s composition and lyrics aim to engage listeners who appreciate rock music that combines intensity with thoughtful themes, as well as hard hitting guitars, iconic solos and powerful arrangements that are always bright and personable.
“Here Lies The Truth” is available on all major streaming platforms. For additional information about Xilla and the band’s music, including tour dates and exclusive content, visit their official website and follow them on social media.

Session Type: Panel Presentation Presented by: Darryl Brown Jr. (he/him), Senior Director of Programs and Advocacy, Black and Pink National. Kenna Barnes (she/they), Advocacy Manager, Black and Pink National Recorded: Yes

Session Type: Fan/Academic Panel Presentation Presented by: Eli Recorded: Yes
History Researcher Meetup Friday, 23:00-24:00 UTC
Session Type: Social Meetup Presented by: David Montgomery Recorded: No A chance for history researchers to meet up and discuss their research!

Then it’s into kit as Dan drills down on HUGO INDUSTRIES, and Bill gets into his favourite subject of gear as he tells all about the HARRIER PACK SYSTEM from HIGHLANDER FORCES. We’ve two SPECIAL REPORTS for you this month as Stewbacca enters THE HALLS OF POWER to report on new airsoft-related legislation in “Airsoft Central” (Taiwan) and then Bill gets together with AIRSOFTER WORLD (AW) to look at the all-new “AW GAMES”!
