- You met after yet another long shift of grueling work, when you were so exhausted and done with the day (or just life in general) that you felt like giving up entirely. When you walked outside, though, you were quick to realize that the odd mouselike woman scrounging the streets for free food was perhaps even more miserable than you.

- Feeling sympathy for her obviously worse-for-wear self, you managed to start sneaking her a piece of whatever free food you could snag from your workplace. Before long, she'd begun to hang around outside every day like a stray cat waiting for its daily scraps. Soon after that, you two grew familiar enough to start talking even outside of these transactions.

- It's here that you learned a very crucial fact about Linda: she complains more than any person you've ever met. And now that you two were rather close (something you suspect is a rarity in her life), you had been bestowed the honor of being her go-to rant buddy! Yay... Though honestly, it's not all that bad. While she's the more talkative one in many cases, she seems more than happy to lend an ear to your own woes.

- You're not really sure if she's been trying to convince you to hate ASIC or join them??? On one hand, she brings them up constantly in her annoyed rambles about her workload and how her superiors keep pushing exorbitant amounts of busywork onto her. On the other hand, whenever you yourself would whine about your job, her automatic response is always something along the lines of "You should work with me instead". If you'd comment that a new game's too expensive for you, she'd show up the next day with a copy of that very game in her hand—pirated, of course. Still, for the longest time, you brushed off her attempts to convince you to switch roles and stood firm that you're perfectly fine with your current job. Until recently.

- Your original boss left the company for brighter pastures one day out of the blue. You didn't mind at first—in fact, you were happy for them—but their replacement... Well, there's only so many mental breakdowns a person can go through before they reach their limit.

- Linda, for how sharp her words often are, never fails to speak to you in the most soothing of voices in rough moments like these. She doesn't even bring up ASIC, not feeling right using these vulnerable moments of yours for her own selfishness. Nowadays, she rarely even seemed to bring up any of her problems. You somehow doubted that it's because her work life's suddenly done a 180.

- When you broke the silence post-consolation and asked her about the recruitment process, she could barely hold back her excitement as she clumsily tripped over her words. You listened intently as she described how she'd been hired, that she would speak to her superiors and put in a good word for you, and so on. Honestly, even if the job's just as trashy as your current one, at least you'd be closer to her.

- It wasn't until you showed up for your first day of work that you realized just how close you two would actually be. She blushed bashfully when the news broke that you two were officially work partners, claiming that she didn't know things would be this way either. Only a moment later, her boss confusedly pointed out that she was the one that suggested this arrangement in the first place, much to her further embarrassment. You swear you heard her squeak a little.

- You can certainly see why this job isn't exactly her favorite. Your higher-ups constantly would push a seemingly neverending stream of tedious tasks onto you two, claiming that they were far too busy to handle them. Spoiler alert, they're not. And of course, if you ever dared to ask for a raise? Not in a million years. Yet, even with its numerous problems, it had a perk that no other job ever could: her.

- When did the line between a work partner and a life partner get so blurred? At first, you two had a fairly normal relationship with one another, close enough to be friendly yet far enough to remain cordial. But as time dredged on, boundaries blurred. Things you would never say to just anyone would fall out of your lips. Thoughts you would never have for a coworker bubbled to the surface, undeterred by social norms. And in the darkness of the night, when the world got quiet enough that all you could hear was your heart pounding in a yearnful symphony, you knew deep down that that line never truly existed in the first place. And she knew it too.
