horror sub-genres • virus horror
virus horror is a sub-genre that defines itself differently than zombie horror. this sub-genre toys with people’s fear of sickness/parasites and the devestating outcome that it could have on society.

Thinking about zombies
Zombies as grief
Zombies as consumerism
Zombies as forced conformity
Zombies as loss of identity
Zombies as inevitable change
Zombies as post-humanity
The apocalypse bringing out the best in some, yielding kindness in the face of futility, showing that hope is always worth clinging to and that fighting on is hope in itself even if you fail, to enjoy the little things moment to moment
The apocalypse revealing the ways we can become the monster we fear in the context of a changed world that never belonged to us
Zombies as cold brutality, showing that malice and intent isn't a prerequisite to violence and cruelty
Zombies as a vessel to prove that selfishness and obsession with dominance and control lead to one's undoing
Zombies as a vessel to prove that cooperation and adaptation is our defining trait, that the way to survive in a seemingly hopeless situation is to depend on one another and to hold on to humanity
Zombies provoking mercy, self sacrifice and unshakable compassion with no reward
Thinking about what these things mean in the COVID era
I love the versatility of zombie stories, and I wish so many didn't shelve them as "all trashy and cheap" when they can hold so much narrative value, no matter how "ugly" or "trashy" they seem on the surface

Man After Man: An Anthroplogy of the Future (Dougal Dixon) "Man After Man explores an imaginary future evolutionary path of humanity, from 200 years in the future to five million years in the future. It contains several technological, social and biological concepts, most prominently genetic engineering but also parasitism, slavery, and elective surgery. As a result of mankind's technological prowess, evolution is accelerated, producing several species with varying intraspecific relations, many of them unrecognizable as humans.
Eventually, modern humanity dies out and technology disappears. With subsequent human species having been engineered to be unintelligent and animal-like in order to repopulate the Earth's ecosystems, concepts like culture and civilization disappear and the lives of most human descendants revolve around gathering food and surviving the harsh conditions of nature. Eventually, as the creatures start to rediscover technology and civilization, they are visited by the descendants of people who fled the planet for space, millions of years ago. The alien humans enslave the earth humans, using genetic engineering to turn them into pack animals and food. Having plundered the planet's resources, they eventually leave, leaving the earth uninhabitable by humans, save for some who now dwell in the ocean's depths.
And yes, it is the origin of 'Season's Greasons'."
I Am Legend (Richard Matheson) "It follows the story of Robert Neville, the sole survivor of a disease that has killed or turned the rest of humanity into vampire-like creatures. An immune survivor, Neville spends his days hunting vampires, scavenging and struggling with loneliness, and the nights being taunted by undead vampires that keep swarming outside his house.
While such a summary might read a lot like the Hunt with maybe some shades of the Lonely, I believe the plot twist in the book places it firmly in the Extinction's domain, or at the very least influenced by it."
SPOILERS UNDER CUT
The Extinction as an Entity is not only the fear of the extinction of Humanity, but also it being replaced by something else. The book's plot twist is that the "vampires" have become fully sapient and that to them, Neville is the monster, not the other way around. The true meaning of the title is that, even after he learns this and commits suicide afterwards, he will still be remembered as a monster of legend by the new people. Humanity has thus been replaced, and our replacement is more than capable of fearing their own annihilation themselves.
