okay fine i give up. listening to season 1 of tma this weekend

the whole tma season five situation especially sucks because i do genuinely think that the first four seasons of tma were really good. they definitely had their flaws and they're certainly not above criticism but overall i felt it was a really good narrative and frankly it would've been perfectly fine if it ended there. season four's ending was an excellent accumulation of the horrors that had building up throughout the series, and i really do think it would've made a great and actually haunting ending if that's where the podcast left us, especially given the mess that was season five's ending.

given that, though, i do also think that season five wouldn't have been as bad as it was if it hadn't been so fucking long and it was instead treated as a coda to the story that had been building instead of being a bloated continuation that ruined most of the characters and turned j.onmartin into the weird abusive mess that the narrative (and fandom!) refused to acknowledge. unfortunately, tma was rusty quill's cash cow (still is i guess. ugh) and the season five we did get came along and made me so angry that i can't even think about touching those first seasons again without getting nauseous with rage lol. that's the real tragedy of the podcast, it failed in every possible way to follow up on the cathartic tragedy that was promised and instead just left us with something bland and infuriating and i still haven't forgiven it 🙄

I don’t know how to feel about Gwen getting demoted for this one, I think she did the right thing when she ran away, and that’s what Lena seems upset about. However, the real reason she should be getting demoted is the classism and condescension that pissed off ink5oul in the first place tbh.

Jonny Sims owes me money and today he owes it for making Jon's position in the narrative so punishing that he's not only the focus of most of the story's attacks, but is also blamed so thoroughly for it by everyone around him that his preexisting guilt problem is confirmed at every turn. He is the hand that holds the knife - of course other people are going to blame him - but he was never given any other option but to drive it in, not even just to sit there and do nothing. That is the entire point of his role, hand designed by Jonah Magnus himself. He only thinks he had a choice because other people keep telling him he did, and because to acknowledge that he didn't would be to confront the horror of his lack of autonomy with a frankness few people could endure. I cannot think of a single point in the storyline where he could have reasonably chosen better with the information he had at hand at the time, but everyone around him is either too hurt and angry themselves or too outright malicious (like Nikola) to do anything but confirm the bias of his hindsight. Tim says he could've done better because he's furious to be abandoned upstairs by who he sees as the one person with slightly more leverage than the assistants to act. Nikola rips him apart using Gertrude and Leitner's voices because she needs to break his spirit to keep him from pulling together enough to stop the Unknowing, and also because it's fun and [Nikola voice] she's a monster! Neither of these people will live long enough for Jon to stop taking their words to heart. The writing is phenomenal. I am in shambles. Jonny Sims start running now,

As much as I love tma and Jonny Sims’ writing I don’t really understand what they were trying to g to do with Jon’s character

Jon was just such deeply unrelatable and annoying throughout the whole show and honestly just not a very good protagonist

Some TMA thoughts.

One of the greatest things that I enjoy in regards to The Magnus Archives is the meta tragic humor that is the existence of Elias Bouchard. I don't mean to belittle his importance to the plot and certainly recognize that his situation was unfortunate. It's funny how everyone views Jon Sims as the antichrist, when this also applies to Elias too. He was certainly just as chosen for a role as much as Jon was.

To those people angry about the synced ao3 tags of Elias and Jonah, therein also lies tragedy. The funniest thing about that situation is the fact all the blame, hatred, disgust, and fear, all falls back on a name; the final remnant of a person who cannot and could not fight back. In universe, it's a corruption of great proportions, the usurpation of a man unprepared for what he sought. Jonah wholesale subsumed Elias's life, and this ripple effects the way we view Elias in real life. Concurrently it is another twist of a knife that drives further irritation deeper when one attempts to assign the proper credit for the events transpired. Deliberate misattribution of critical events is horrifying too and is so effortlessly executed by Jonah, almost like an inverse plagiarism. Seeing people frustrated about that in tagging delights me in a way, that if one chooses to engage meta-contextually, the acts perpetrated by Jonah bleed upwards into our reality and afflict it too. Continuing to hate Elias in general, you perpetuate the narrative established by Jonah. The Magnus Archives as a podcast written by Jonny Sims is creative and all the more chilling as a result.
