Rin Masterpost

Rin! Rinsha Fana! Beloved side character I think about far too much (or maybe not enough?)

I decided that it might be nice to put together an informational post about Rin, since she has some of my favorite background details of any character in Dungeon Meshi. This is partly as reference for myself, and partly for anyone else who might be interested in her but not know where to chase down the tidbits we we get of her, both in canon & extra materials. There’s also a little bit of theorizing and analysis sprinkled in for fun.

If anyone spots something I missed, please let me know and I will add it in!

Alright. Time for ultimate #rinposting

History and Timeline:

We don't have an official timeline for Rin (even in the expanded Adventurer's Bible, sadly), but we can put a lot of pieces together based on Kabru's timeline & their respective ages.

Rin is 2 years older than Kabru, and they met when he was 9. Assuming that he met her soon after she was taken to the elven capital, that means that the elves took her when she was 11.

Before that, she lived on the Northern Continent. Interestingly, when Mickbell asks about Shuro, Rin says she was born "here."

Since "here" doesn't mean the actual Island itself, it must mean simply "not the east." She is described in the Adventurer's Bible as having "no real knowledge of or attachment to the East," so maybe that's why she draws a "there" verses "here" line.

I'd also like to add a note here that the elves don't seem uh... they don't seem great about respecting the value of other cultures, especially those of short-life species. Milsiril seems to have discouraged Kabru from eating or remembering food from his hometown, at least, and that's even as an adoptive parent who cares (at least in some way) for her child. As I will touch on later, the "care" that Rin was under probably had even less respect for her history or ties to either Eastern or Northern culture.

That is all to say, considering that Rin spent many years with the elves, I'd take her having "[no] attachment to the East" as more of a comment on how she feels now, and less as a definite choice she made. She may genuinely have chosen that approach and opinion for herself, she may have been pushed towards it by the elves, and she may have had little choice at all in the matter - all are valid interpretations, though I personally lean towards the thought that it's unlikely the elves didn't have at least some hand in it.

Anyway, Rin does seem to know at least a bit about her heritage - she can presumably name and identify the specific island her parents are from, and she recognizes that "Shuro" isn't a name used there. She also knows that different places from the Eastern archipelago speak different languages, so she knows at least a little about the other islands as well.

Some additional extrapolations I'll make based on these facts: she never mentions, and probably isn't in contact with, any family from her island. This may be because her extended family died, because her parents didn't (or weren't able to) maintain contact, or because she lost contact when she was taken by the elves. Somewhat relatedly, she also prooobably doesn't speak the language, at least not fluently, though her being able to comment on the state of language in the archipelago makes me think that she at least learned a little as a kid.

Anyway, Rin's parents were refugees from the archipelago, though we don't know what specifically caused them to leave. There is this little tidbit of info we get (from the cover of chapter 48, of all places), though:

So yeah, that seems like it would be the backdrop of Rin's parents fleeing. As I said earlier, it's unclear if Rin might have any living family left back on her island. The listing she has for “family” in the Adventurer's Bible is just a dash, but so is Izutsumi's, for instance, and we know that she was taken from her family with no knowledge of who might still be out there. It's possible everyone else was killed, it's possible they were separated... it's possible that Rin's parents didn't even know.

As an additional note, and this is speculation on my part, but I think there is an argument to be made, with this tidbit from the cover as well as the Nakamoto clan's specialty in espionage and use of ninjas, that the politics of the archipelago are partially based on Sengoku era Japan. Not necessarily super relevant here, but I think it's interesting context for all... of the archipelago characters, honestly.

(Especially considering it seems like the Nakamoto clan is in a relatively comfortable position, and yet clearly are involved, or at least prepared to be involved in larger conflict. How stable is their position, really? How is Shuro's father viewed by the wider region and archipelago as a whole? What about his lord? NOT THE POINT THIS IS A POST ABOUT RIN. BUT IT'S VERY INTERESTING TO THINK ABOUT.)

Okay, back to Rin's parents.

Whatever caused them to leave, they made their way to the north, where they made their living with their magic for a time. There are no specifics about what kind of magic they used, but we know at least some examples of jobs that magic can get you, based on the flashback to Laios and Falin's childhood in chapter 26. Laios proposes that Fain could use her magic to be a priest, gravekeeper, or wandering exorcist. Though these are specific to Falin's affinity with spirits, they give some idea of the shape of the work that might be available. It's important, but it is also on the outskirts of society - not necessarily admired or appreciated by the average person.

And Rin’s parents were killed by vigilantes for that magic. It's not entirely news that superstitious villages in the area would sometimes kill magic users - we see a small drawing of people being burned at the stake in a panel towards the end of the manga:

Nonetheless, Rin is the only person in the main cast who has experienced this brutality firsthand. And she did experience it firsthand, having been found by the elves as the sole survivor within the burnt ruins of her home.

It is unknown exactly how she survived, or what happened to her parents before and during the fire. Rin lived, and they did not.

The elves came some time after the fire, intending to investigate reports of ancient magic. They (and we) don't know if Rin's parents actually did use ancient magic, or if the reports and murders were simply spurred by general fear and superstition. Rin was the only piece of "evidence" that remained, and so she was taken back to the west with the elves when they left.

We don't know much about her time on the Northern Central Continent (where the elves/Canaries are based), but it doesn't seem like she was adopted or taken in by anyone the way that Kabru was. According to the Adventurer's Bible, after being taken into custody, "under their care she was treated as a captive animal would be." I would guess that means very basic food and shelter, little to no education. Probably the most social contact she got was from Kabru, as well as maybe, occasionally, from elves treating her as a curiosity, such as in this bit in the Adventurer’s Bible:

Assuming she left with Kabru (which seems like it is the case, there's no info about them having separated during that time), she spent 9 years with the elves, and has been with Kabru on the Island in the 4 years since then.

She also stays in the Golden Country after the end of the story, apparently working as an apothecary.

Additional Details (& Speculation):

What does she remember of her family and home?

I'd like to take a moment here to explore a little of what Rin might remember of her parents and home.

For reference, we can look at Kabru. The canaries came to Utaya when Kabru was 6, and he arrived in the capital when he was 7. He remembers the events of the tragedy in his home, and has some memories of his mother and life in Utaya, including memories of local dishes.

Rin lost her parents and home at 11, so she presumably has much clearer memories of the events that lead to her being taken by the elves... or she might, assuming that they haven't been completely blocked by her trauma from the event.

Yeah, I am fairly damn sure that she's got some memory issues from trauma and PTSD. For one, this is the state she was found in:

As already mentioned, she was also treated like something of an animal by the elves. She probably didn't have a lot of contact with other people, which would further perpetuate that sense of isolation and dehumanization. What I'm getting at here is that Rin probably didn't have much to help pull her out of this place, or heal these wounds. She had Kabru, who was also a kid and even younger than her, and she had herself.

Obviously trauma leaves different scars on everyone, and everyone responds and copes in different ways. But I do think it is interesting that we never hear anything about Rin's parents or life before the elves, and there are no real details about it given in the Adventurer's Bible the way we have for Kabru. What's presented is more surface level facts: they were refugees, they made a living with magic, they were killed.

I'm inclined to believe that things are laid out this way because that's how Rin holds on to these things. She knows things about them, but possibly remembers them more as things she was told/knows to be true, rather than actual memories she can picture herself experiencing.

Rin's Magic

In an interesting counterpoint to her potentially spotty memory, I do actually think Rin may have learned magic from her parents (or started learning, and was self-taught from there). She never attended a magic academy, and actually has a bit of grudge against people who did - owing to the social protection afforded to "upper-class mages," which her parents did not have. She also almost certainly wouldn't have been taught by the elves, who not only treated her as an animal but also knew her parents may have been involved with ancient magic.

Falin began to show signs of magical talent at 8, and was sent to the Magic Academy at 10, and that was as someone who had absolutely no guidance about or exposure to magic in her home town. Raised by two mage parents, I think Rin absolutely could have been learning some things by the time she was 11.

In terms of continued learning, I'll add that Rin is able to identify Marcille's magic as being A) from an Academy student, and B) cast by an elf:

This makes me think that she continued to study magic on her own while held by the elves, and probably even more so after leaving with Kabru. They didn't form the party until two years after they left the elves, which would give Rin plenty of time to try and learn from other adventurers on the Island, or to study up on her own. She'd probably be able to pick up some dungeon-crawling basics (like the water walk spell), as well as become familiar with the skill level and expression of skill common in different people with different backgrounds (hence why she is able to comment on the "textbook" academy wards).

Much like Marcille, Rin also seems to rely on a 'one size fits all' Big Boom method of dealing with monsters: lightning. We see the best example of its power in the fight with Chimera Falin:

But we also see her cast it pretty recklessly in a few other places, including the end credits of the new anime ED, which I think provides a good example of the downsides to such an approach...

Yeah, it is very much a 'get out of the way or get zapped' spell.

Especially since Marcille's offensive magic is self-taught and works very similarly, this definitely reinforces the idea that Rin figured most of this stuff out herself.

Outfit and Character Design

Dear sweet Rin of the Red And Black... how I love her design.

First of all, her clothes are damaged. Despite the fact that Rin looks relatively well put together overall, her outfit is worn out. I have some theories on why this is that I'll get to in a bit, but for now I'll just touch on what this design communicates in general about it.

I think, just like with Kabru's horribly messy room, it creates a sense that there is something more complicated underneath the surface. Something that isn't being addressed or seen to, just as the dress hasn't been mended or replaced.

It also reflects her not caring a ton about her appearance. She's neat, but she's not concerned about being pretty, so she doesn't bother with fixing up her outfit after her dungeon crawls. This also fits with her perpetual scowl (which I will talk more about in a bit), and slightly disheveled hair.

Next: the gloves. At first I thought they might be a sort of uncomfortable-with-touch thing, but after skimming through the manga and some bonus content, I have another theory. Rin takes the gloves off to eat, as well as a few other instances, such as when working on a spell with Holm and Marcille in chapter 36

This one is especially interesting because she has them on in the next chapter, during the fight with Falin. Since she also isn't wearing gloves during some of the Daydream Hour art of her outside of the dungeon, that leads me to believe that they are specifically for combat.

What does she need them for, though? Most other casters we see don't wear gloves. Well... just look at the other half of the page where she attacks Falin with lightning:

She is enveloped by this spell. I said it before was pretty reckless magic, but maybe its not just a problem for her teammates, but for her as well.

So here's my theory: maybe the gloves are rubber, or some other electricity-resistant material? They might help protect her from her own magic. I don't know why a caster would need gloves for combat otherwise.

I also think this might be why her dress is tattered at the bottom, by the way. Especially since the Daydream Hour genderswap design doesn't have a similar problem with his outfit, since the tunic isn't as long.

I will admit this is a bit of stretch/guess, but I think it's a fun one, and I wanted to share. I do think I'm right about the gloves being for dungeons/fighting specifically, at least. That seems pretty consistent throughout all of her appearances.

I also mentioned her scowl, so I'll touch on that briefly as well. The (fairly confirmed) explanation for Rin's expression is that she intentionally wears a frown to prevent her other expressions from showing through. I think it's important to emphasize that it's not just smiling that she is trying to suppress here - it's any strong emotion:

Rin and Kabru

I have talked a bit about Rin and Kabru's history, but I think it deserves its own section.

I think it's very interesting that Rin is pretty much the ONLY character in all of Dungeon Meshi that has explicit canonical romantic interesting in someone. It's literally part of the main summary sentence in her character profile.

This could be sort of reductive as a way to describe a female character (and in some ways it still is), but I think in part the simplicity and directness of it actually is part of what makes it so interesting. Especially when on the very next page we see the comic about her backstory. "This mage is in love with Kabru" -> one page of a horribly traumatic event and a child frozen in shock with no one to comfort her. What does that do?

Well, in my opinion, it shows how much Rin focuses on Kabru as something to keep her in the present. In contrast with the immense loss she has experienced, her love for Kabru is current and alive. He has presumably been her anchor for years, and I think that her love is part of that anchor.

Adding to this, in contrast with how explicit her feelings are, she never seems to actively pursue Kabru. She complains about his potential interest in other women, but she doesn't really flirt. She doesn't let herself smile around him any more than anyone else, and she doesn't hide her bitterness or anger from him to present a more appealing persona.

As much as she craves Kabru's attention, and has stayed by his side for years, I don't know that she really wants to possess him. He seems to know about her feelings, more or less, and she seems to know that he knows. Maybe she believes he doesn't reciprocate and is respecting that, maybe she's afraid of what she could lose if she tried to change things, or maybe the change itself frightens her. In any case, though she's not exactly happy with the way things are between them, she doesn't seem to be trying to change that status quo.

A specific thing I'd also like to talk about with their relationship, beyond Rin's love for him, is her fear for him. As the Adventurer's Bible puts it, "she worries that his knack for dealing with whatever life throws at him might lead him to get too full of himself and end up in serious trouble."

Rin is an interesting mix of restrained and explosive, herself. Her magic is destructive, her temper seems to run hot (she gets annoyed easily, at least), and her feelings for Kabru are apparent. At the same time, she doesn't let her emotions show on her face, she is the one who bluntly states that the group has hit the limit of their abilities, and she doesn't act on those obvious feelings for Kabru. It's interesting, then, that what she fears for Kabru is that he won't restrain himself.

And a small personal idea about that as well: I wonder if she somewhat blames her parents for getting killed. Again, this is very speculative, but I think it's interesting that her fear for Kabru is that he will get too full of himself. Take up too much space. It's never really stated what Rin thinks of her parents, but it can be easy in grief to search for control, and control often means blame. If they hadn't been so confident, so flashy, would they still be alive...?

I don't know if she's ever thought like that, and it could well be that her fears for Kabru come from a totally different place. But it's an interesting connective thread between her past and present - the idea of "getting in trouble" for taking up too much space and being too confident in one's own abilities.

Miscellaneous Tidbits:

On that note, I'd like to wrap up the main part of this post, and move on to a few extra things that I couldn't find another place for.

Rin plays with her hair when she's stressed

Using stressed as a pretty big umbrella here, because I think it's hard to perfectly pin down all the emotions at play, but it is a habit of hers. Best displayed in chapter 32, but it shows up in other places, too.

Her design contrasts with Marcille

This is a small thing, but I just love how much they are visual opposites.

Rin wears red and black and has dark hair, Marcille wears blue and white and has light hair. Marcille cares a great deal for her hair and puts it up in elaborate hairstyles, and Rin's is mostly loose and a bit messy. Marcille was even educated at the Magic Academy, which Rin dislikes. They both have little capelets. Also they both look very cute in each other's clothes.

Rin knows Flamela (and they meet again in canon)

Nothing much is done with this in canon, but I think it’s super interesting that Flamela's squad are the ones that find Rin as a child and take her away to the west, and then they end up stuck in the dungeon together for a bit.

Two days??? I'm so very curious what things were like between these three.

Aaaand I think that's all I have to say about Rin! For the time being at least. There's a lot more analysis that could be done about her and Kabru especially, but for this post I wanted to keep things at least somewhat anchored to canon facts, with only a layer or two of speculation on top.

If it isn't already obvious, I think Rin is a super interesting character with a ton of potential depth to explore. She mostly interacts with Kabru in canon, but has ties to a bunch of other characters: she and Marcille fill similar roles in their parties but have differing personalities and histories, she and Falin (and Laios) have been tremendously shaped by xenophobia and fear of magic common in the Northern Continent, her parents fled from conflict in the same region Shuro and his retainers are from, and she has history with Flamela and some of the second canary squad.

Her temper, her fear, her love... her repression and passion - they all inform her character, even in small ways, even with as little time as she spends on the page.

First, of course they don't mean actual Sam fans are fans of Sam. They mean those "fans" who totes for real love him but literally never post anything about him except bad weird fanon of him being a ship cheerleader. But they totes love him, really! Team Free Will! It's not just about the ship, see!

Then they claim Jared was "extremely rude to waiters" and just ... like tell me you don't even know what you're supposedly upset about without telling me. Like, actually, IMO, tweeting out identifiable info about service workers was a genuinely bad judgement call. Except it was a couple of times a long fucking time ago and he hasn't repeated it since because he realized that wasn't the best way to handle those situations. But if you ask dumb people on the internet, if you ever make a mistake you're tainted forever if you don't support their shitty fanon ship.

Then they bring up the bar incident, which, again, was not great, actually. Except once again, that was an isolated occurrence well over five years ago not repeated before or since. Jared publicly talked about taking accountability and mentioned changing his behavior in terms of drinking in public going forward. Like any reasonable, mindful, not 100% perfect person would.

It's not surprising given that they are clearly just parroting bullshit that they delve into straight up lies thereafter. The tattoo is a well-known Texas symbol that has been used by many different groups beyond the original context and gun nuts, so there's literally no reason to assume those are Jared's reasons for it as a Texan. So far as calling him a Republican they're literally just throwing shit at the wall given how much he's publicly supported D and liberal organizations. Even if you don't know how to look up donations, a literal five second Google pulls up him and Gen with fucking Dr. Jill Biden [X] talking up her husband as a potential president before the 2020 election.

Like, people who insist Jared is a blameless saint who has never ever done anything that wasn't the 100% most perfect decision in every situation ever make me roll my eyes but these fuckwits are something else entirely. Not only is the shit they're supposedly soooo upset about really fucking old, really fucking stupid, or both? The thing that really gets me? They clearly don't even actually genuinely care about any of it! If they did, they'd know the actual details. They clearly just desperately want to vomit out whatever their hivemind can come up with to paint Jared as A Bad Person™ in hopes it will elevate Misha and D/C. As per usual, though, the dishonestly stupid leading the gullible isn't going anywhere but in irrelevant circles.

(19) I love that Beau actively sought out Fjord for help with people stuff and apologizing to Caleb. Also shows how much she has come to value Caleb and his friendship because otherwise she wouldn't care if she was an asshole to him. I just love the top table dynamics so much

(39) The sheer difference between Fjord giving advice and Yasha giving advice is hilarious. Also Caleb approaches the situation with different goals, Beau just wants advice and trusts Fjord to give it, while for Caleb the performance of asking for advice is as much the goal as the advice itself. Especially with the "We are friends now, ja?" he is actively trying to convince the big scary lady that he's worth protecting. It is a subtle manipulation but it's manipulation all the same (and also the shaving scene is phenomenal)

Hi Grey Heart!!^^ Welcome back, and thank you for sending in an ask!! :]

I sure do!! I have some headcanoned birthdays for some contestants, ones that they'd pick out (mostly) themselves:

I think Nickel and Baseball would actually decide to share February 20th as their birthday. With Taco and/or Pickle's input, they'd be able to deduce that they were the first two contestants created, but I don't think they'd remember their beginnings well enough to know which one of them was first, or if they were made at the same time. So they share the day :).

Yin-Yang puts their birth day on March 9th for Miku day.

Taco's birthday is on October 4th, because that was the day for national taco day (in the US) before they moved it to be the first Tuesday in October. But that is not how birthdays work, so she'll have her day on the old taco day. I would have it be March 31st because that's Día del Taco in Mexico, but since the series' anniversary is on April 1st, I don't think any of them would want their birthday to be so close. Given the rather uncaring attitude towards holidays, especially immediately post-s2 finale, that I headcanon for her, Mic would be the one to pick her birthday for her.

I think a lot of them would get their birthdays from the 'national day' thing, once Mic starts it. There are "national days" for a strange amount of things, though I've never seen anyone actually celebrate them. It seems like a mostly american thing? But regardless, most of the contestants do speak with an american accent, so it doesn't really matter. Here's the full birthday-based-on-random-national-object-day list:

Apple's is October 21st

Pickle's is November 14th

Bow's is August 19th

Knife's is August 24th

Box's is June 19th

Cherries' is July 16th

Goo's is December 7th (It's worth mentioning that he wanted his birthday to be June 0th, because it could be written has 6.00 which looks like his name, but as June 0th is not an actual day, he went with national slime day instead)

Tea Kettle's is May 21st, international tea day, because Taco already celebrates the british one in April.

Lightbulb's, I think of as June 21st, for the summer solstice. It's the brightest day of the year, yeah? The solstice falls on the 20th, 21st, or 22nd, but I figured just going in the middle is fine.

Fan's would be November 6th, for that crazy day in which multiple fandoms were absolutely blowing up. He'd probably pick April 2nd if the group as a whole hadn't agreed that the anniversary days are off limits.

Bot would go with February 18th, since that's the day they chose their name.

Marsh would pick February 5th, for their first day of no longer competing on II (though Kick the Bucket gets a bit weird with having been uploaded in 2 parts initially).

I think that's all the birthdays I have picked out! I know it's not everyone, but I haven't thought of good birthdays for everyone yet. If anyone has their own ideas I'd be happy to hear them :3

Do you ever think about how precisely Jing Yuan excises his grief to not to succumb to mara because whenever I do I feel like puking my guts out.

This video was in my bili recs this morning and I had to stop myself from tearing up on the train 5s into it. You have to give it to mihoyo that the microexpressions are done amazingly well in the moments it matters. The way he gives himself a moment to take in the two of them after they fought side by side (even if it was to beat up his disciple lol). He regards them with such warmth and affection before Blade cruelly cuts off his attempt at establishing a connection and ughhhh you just see how he compartmentalizes and slips back into his role as the General.

His subsequent conversation with Dan Heng is also so emotionally fraught, I don't even know how he doesn’t just implode.

His "So what?" really gets to me. I thought he'd sound quite like he's repressing his anger but I rewatched the scene and he says it with barely any heat😫 He is well aware that this isn't his old friend anymore, Dan Heng couldn't have been making it clearer. If anything, he sounds resignated and self-mocking.

Also this scene is so evillll because the first time you (I) played this scene, you're totally seeing it from Dan Heng's POV. He's justified in being annoyed with how everyone sees him as someone he isn't, and Jing Yuan seems especially stubborn about not letting it go. I for one just kept thinking "Dude Jing Yuan, leave the poor lad alone."

The thing though is that Dan Heng actually is wrong here — he is very much still Dan Feng by the definition of Vidyadhara reincarnation. Due to this unique characteristic, Vidyadharas also exhibit a life cycle different from other long-life species. Their life, consisting of reverting from maturity to an infantile stage in an unending cycle, relies upon continuous cellular transdifferentiation. This is the reason why Vidyadharas do not face the ailments of immortality that many other long-life species have to contend with.

While what exactly happens during the incubation process after the Vidyadhara turn into eggs before their rebirth is a mystery, the chief condition of a rebirth being considered one is the *complete* loss of your memories. After rebirth, the Vidyadhara can be of a different gender and usually display no similar inclinations as their previous incarnations. What we also know is the way they turn into eggs is via de-ageing.

So you have to understand Dan Feng's reincarnation was incomplete in the way that he literally just de-aged a bit. Philosophical debate aside about what makes you you and if you're still yourself when you've lost memories that made you you—Dan Heng biologically is de-aged Dan Feng. How Dan Heng thinks of himself is course his prerogative and it's totally fair that he sees himself as a whole new person and believes that Dan Feng has nothing to do with him. But he still has his powers. He still has some of his memories; probably more than he lets on actually if you read some of playable!Dan Heng's character stories in-game. So it’s not hard to understand why other people would still see him as Dan Feng even if he doesn’t think he is.

Anyways, point is that Jing Yuan actually doesn't cling that much to the past as first impression makes it seem, either. I was gonna say that he calls him Dan Feng in...two? instances which come across as very annoying to the player, but I’m Ctrl+F ing this chapter and he never does directly address Dan Heng as Dan Feng to his face. Actually, Jing Yuan comes to terms with it shockingly swiftly. "Old friend." "I'm not him." "Mhm… sorry" <- HE HAS ACCEPTED IT THEN AND THERE. Those are their first words exchanged after reuniting, what the heck... It was both a half-hearted and a last ditch attempt to find his old friend in Dan Heng, and it’s not as if he never had any high hopes but they immediately get shattered, nonetheless.

Jing Yuan doesn't see and need Dan Feng in Dan Heng, the one that does is the Luofu General—he says as much. And after Dan FHeng fulfills what was his duty all along (sealing the fancy tree with his dragon powers or whatever, I don't quite remember) and something he sorely owed to Jing Yuan and the Luofu, Jing Yuan lets him go. *points at "Haha, let us talk of happier topics. The friends you made on the Express are about to arrive here. Don’t you wish to see them?"* Like do you see this!!!!!! He immediately engages with Dan Heng as Dan Heng of the Astral Express, and asks him about his new friends QAQ

I havent watched samurai jack, only watched the video you linked to for aku birth. What are the chances of aku absorbing personality traits or vaque memories from the countless people/animals his pit ate before his birth? Any canon basis for that?

Here's the thing—he's born Knowing Stuff already. He can talk. (He sounds like an old man.) He knows what a shogun is. He knows that the emperor used an arrow and hocus-pocus to create him, even though it happened like a minute before he was actually born. He decides to declare himself master of the world, suspends the emperor from a fat tree like Japanese Jesus, and immediately bounces over to the emperor's palace to set it on fire, which means he knows where the local seat of power is, he knows that it'll hurt the emperor to watch Aku destroy it... and, just on a very basic level of cultural knowledge people aren't usually born with, he knows what a building is.

He got that knowledge from somewhere.

We're given NO ~*direct*~ indication that he's absorbed personality/memories from his victims. As far as we have seen canonically, "insert victim; receive dead tree" is the only result you get from the pit eating somebody. (At least, until Aku gains sapience; now it can spit people back out and house demons and stuff.)

But based on the info we have to work with from canon, the only two plausible explanations for his knowledge are "he absorbed the knowledge of his victims," or "just straight up magic."

Canon doesn't "support" the knowledge-absorption theory, per se; but canon doesn't give us any reason to think it must be false.

My personal headcanon? I think he got vague knowledge/memories from his victims; and I think the shapes we see him take (bat, scorpion, octopus, some sorta gorilla or something idk, dragon...) are all things that fell in his pit at some point. Had Aku not absorbed an entire army of samurai five minutes before he was born, he might have taken the shape of an ant or something; instead, he looks human.

But I don't think he identifies with any of their memories, and I don't think that he's an amalgamation of the personalities of his victims; those are other people, he just stole something from them.

If Daiki's beautiful wife Sakura fell in the pit a month before Aku was born and Aku ran into him he could be like "ah yes, I recognize you... your FOOL OF A WIFE met her fate in the depths of the pit of hate... taking your unborn daughter with her... Oh, did you not know? 😈" but Daiki wouldn't see anything of Sakura in Aku's mannerisms or personality.

Something about him though...it's different. He gives you a feeling in your gut that screams at you to get away. You can't put your finger on it, but there is much more going on with the newest patient than you had originally anticipated.

He came in about a month ago, you recall. You don't know his name, no one does. When identifying him, the team tried to get samples of DNA that would point to who he could possibly be. Strangely enough though, whenever they tried, the results would come back garbled and messed up, rendering any information that might be on the papers useless. At first the team had thought it was something wrong with their machines, but it was able to correctly report everyone else's information just fine. Only his came out warped in that way.

No one else wanted to deal with him. And you, having the reputation of the doctor that can help anyone, were quickly assigned to him. Today would be your first day working with him, and the goal was just to get any identifying information from him. If all went smoothly, you were set to start asking him about where he came from in 2 days. As you made it to the room he was staying in, you were pulled aside by your boss. "We'll be monitoring your conversation with him. Don't diagnose anything this time, we're only getting basic info." You gave a small smile and a nod "I know." With that, you opened the door.

The room was pretty bare, save for a small couch, a chair in front of the couch, a security camera, and a painting on the wall. He was laying on the couch, playing with his fingers. You took the seat in front of him and readied your clipboard. "Hello. I'm doctor y/n. May I have your name?" He sighed heavily and turned towards you. "I've already told you guys a million times. Here's the thing, even if I told you everything you wanted to know, and answered every single one of your questions, you wouldn't believe me about anything anyways. You'd think I'm crazy and waste all your time giving me medication that wouldn't work and giving me therapy that won't fix anything. So what's the point?" You slowly nod, and think for a moment before standing up and pacing around the room. He isn't in any kind of altered state, you can see that much. He is aware where he is, and who he is, he is just being cryptic about it to others. He understands his actions and what he is doing, so medically speaking, you haven't been able to come up with anything other than possible paranoia?

You turn to look at him once more. "Ok, listen up. I get paid almost 50 dollars an hour. That's 2,000 dollars a week and 110,000 a year, give or take. Whether or not you tell me anything does not affect this number. Whether or not I spend all day in this room with you does not affect this number. My point is, whether or not you tell me anything of interest does not affect me, it only affects you. If you want my help, I am here to help you. But if you do not, I can't force you into accepting it. Legally speaking, I only have to make sure you are not a danger to yourself or others, and once I can safely say that, you can walk right out that front door and never look back." You walk over to the room's door and open it. "Likewise, I also have patients who do want help, and I'd rather not waste my time talking to someone who does not want it. Slender might just decide to not help him out, and might just leave him there to rot, metaphorically speaking. Sure, he could spend his time waiting in his room for something that might not even happen, or he could try and assure his own escape. And you are the quickest way to that escape. "I'll talk." He finally says. You close the door and head back to the chair. "Brilliant."

He spends the rest of the session making up a life of homelessness and misfortune. He was orphaned at a young age and never given proper parents, so he doesn't know his last name. And being homeless that young is a very traumatic experience, so he has dissociative periods throughout his life that he can't remember. This seems to satisfy you, as only a half hour later he's going back to his room and the other doctors are wondering how you cracked him open so easily. While all of this information is good, it still doesn't solve the mystery of his identification being totally unreadable. You hope that, perhaps with time of getting to know him, this mystery will be solved.

After your first intake meeting with him, it's no wonder you were assigned to Ben. You were the only doctor he'd talk to (mostly because he was hoping to play on your emotions to get out as soon as possible). As the weeks went by, you got to know Ben better and better. You learned that he loved video games (which didn't make sense to you at first, because if he'd been homeless his whole life, where did he get a video game from? He quickly explained this away with going to the library to use their computers), and you also learned that he had a best friend named Jeff. He tells you that he misses Jeff dearly, and that he needs to get out of this place quickly so he can get back to him. If Jeff ever caught wind of this conversation, Ben would be done for, but he needed something to draw up more sympathy. He is doing better and better, and you figure that soon you will be discharging him. The thought makes you sad, and at first you aren't sure why. You've discharged plenty of patients before, but with Ben you feel you have a more emotional tie. At night you run through different scenarios of inviting him to live with you so he doesn't have to go back to the streets, and you imagine your life with him. Helping him get his life in order with a job, some new clothes, and maybe even a video game console of his own to celebrate his discharge. The thought makes you smile as you walk down to his room to do another therapy session.

Ben would be lying if he said he didn't form a connection to you. Sure he had friends at the manor, but he was only really close to Jeff. And with you making an active interest in getting to know him made him feel almost loved. The thought makes him cringe, especially because he knows that it's just your job, but he finds himself wondering if he can take you back with him to the manor. Slender probably wouldn't give you a job, but if he could find a way to just kidnap you and keep you in his room forever, it might work. And eventually loving him won't just be your job, it will be your only purpose in life. And he will love you too, of course, but only as much as it is safe for him. If slender were to find out about you it's a 50/50 shot of him letting Ben keep you, or getting rid of you entirely. He would have spent more time dwelling on this thought if it weren't for the window in his room crashing with a ball of white and red flying through it. Once his vision settles, he sees that the ball of white and red is actually Jeff, coming to get him out of this place. "Took you long enough you asshole." He says, coming to help Jeff up and giving him a brief pat on the back. "Yeah and what about you? Keepin' yer'self cooped up in here for weeks on end. I should beat you senseless for dipping out on us like that." Jeff says with a jab from the handle of his knife to Ben's side. "You'd stay too if you saw my doctor. Total babe." Jeff scoffs and grabs Ben's arm. "Keep it in yer pants till we get back to the manor, doofus." He begins to move back to the window until stopping when he hears the door creak open.

You don't know which surprises you more, the smashed window, Jeff THE killer, or seeing Ben seemingly be ok with all of it. You freeze when you see him, when you see them. All this time, Ben was lying to you. Not even just lying, but actively putting you in danger. You don't have time to think because the second you comprehend what's happening, Ben is coming up behind you and hitting you on the head, immediately knocking you out. 3. Watch g*re/slashers.: Similar to the last one, this can help your mind become desensitized to violence, and at times, can actually cause you to enjoy it.

Masturbate to g*re or other violent media.: This is only if you want a sexual sadistic pleasure, but if you do, this can form the connection in your mind between pleasure and other's pain. Yes I was dysphoric. I was raped as a child so it's hard to say without that what I would have felt without that. But I hated my body and absolutely feared male puberty. I wanted nothing to do with men or being male.

My name is the same both before and after, I was given a unisex name so I didn't change it.

Pronouns I did change when I transitioned. I also changed all my legal documents including my birth certificate. I have only detransitioned to friends, my work has a unisex bathroom so I use that. Ironically because all my info is changed over I'm kinda stuck because the government is making it really hard if not impossible to change that now, and I don't have my original birth certificate only the "corrected" one so I've more or less been forcefemed by the USA.

My detransition was based on both online experiences and real world ones, it was mostly watching at first other trans women but also finding in myself how much you don't just leave internalized sexism behind which is what started it.

I was a member of the trans community, I was in support groups and tons of trans friends and community. However I was quickly labeled a terf when I started asking questions so now my views are more private in person.

I also read a lot more and ironically listened to women and realised my experience was not the same as female experiences with the world. And realising I was just playing at being female while making an ass of myself. That lead to me accepting that I was male, but also learning to accept myself while being male. That being male and being feminine can coexist and that's okay.

Pronoun wise I hated he/him pronouns because it was a constant reminder of me being male, that hatred went away as I accepted myself.

Now I feel at home in my body for the first time I think ever, I feel like a weight has been lifted not having to lie to people I care about, about my sex.

I'm a gender abolishonist, gender is fake and I feel like the quicker we get rid of it the faster we can just live how we want. However sexism is very real and needs to be addressed which can't really happen as long as we are having the gender wars.

I share most of my views with radical feminists, however I reapect the radfem communities request that no males be involved so I try and stay out and let them speak for themselves and so don't label myself a radfem. If I were female I absolutely would though.

bird reproductive system overview

so from what i've gathered the cloaca (also known as a vent) of female birds specifically isn't all too dissimilar in function or general structure to the vagina in placental mammals EXCEPT for the fact that cloacas in birds are multiple use in the sense that it's used for reproduction (egg laying in females), excretion and defecation. the cloaca is connected to the oviduct which is connected to the ovary, again similar to regular human/placental mammal biology.

(really interesting how so many different multicellular organisms share the same "format", as it were.)

tengu biology speculation

internal organs & reproductive/excretory system -> for no other reasons beyond personal all i'd really change is just separating the waste line from the reproductive line. the waste line can still be a singular line with no urine/feces distinction given that birds naturally just expel them together (also interesting new thing learned today was that bird 'urine' consists of uric acid as opposed to urea, hence the white colour).

diet -> not too different from humans, but tengu would likely have a far higher calcium intake than regular humans for healthy egg production. female tengu still produce and need to lay an egg once a year (average for crows), and the lack of calcium can result in eggbinding which can be fatal. tengu can get their extra calcium by snacking on seeds, drinking milk, or eating certain fruits and vegetables. this is going into cultural territory but i think it'd be possible for tengu to have some unique high-calcium dishes incorporating bones or snail shells. rip kjsr though she probably doesn't know these exist

how would sex even work -> so a vast majority of birds copulate via what's called a 'cloacal kiss'. the easiest way to put this is that they kinda just scissor (touch cloacas) and that's how the sperm from the male is transferred to the female, given that males in this scenario do not have an external sex organ (dickless). for the bird species that DO keep their dicks, copulation is pretty much straightforward from what i've gathered in (insertion, insemination, etc.). however, crows are not part of the bird species that still have phalluses so they copulate via cloaca. interestingly this could mean f/f, m/f, and m/m sex between tengu in theory shouldn't be too different from each other beyond the lack/presence of sperm production. (maybe there's something to be gleaned here about tengu society as a result but i don't think i'm knowledgeable enough on sex and gender and its interactions and effects on society as a whole to comment on it. but it could also be interesting!). penetrative sex would still be possible for tengu, but it would probably take a lot of prep work and building up to, especially if involving any kind of phallus as opposed to fingering. i couldn't really find any concrete yes/no info on 1) if birds have the capacity to self-lubricate when aroused or 2) if birds (or in a broader sense, animals) can experience an orgasm. but for the sake of Fun and Whimsy and Horny i have decided the answer to both questions as they pertain to tengu is yes. the only major L for female tengu is that they don't have a clit (at least, externally) as it is something female birds lack, although the early-development phallus seen in most female vertebrates are seen in female birds, however they are not present or at least, identifiable in adulthood. so in theory i could argue that female tengu maybe have something like an 'internal clitoris', which could function as a g-spot equivalent, making penetrative sex for tengu a little more desirable.

eggs? -> generally speaking bird egg sizes are proportional to the size of the bird itself (with exceptions, re: the kiwi). i couldn't find an exact catch-all number so i'm gonna have to do some really sketchy math. the large billed crow (native to east asia) has an average mass between 400g-1000g, the midpoint being 700g. the average mass of an egg from what i could find is 11.8g. therefore on average the egg is 1.68% of the crow's body mass [(11.8/700)*100=1.68%]. in specifically kjsr's case since i hc her as 6ft the average mass of a 6ft human female is 68-73kg, so i'll take 70.5kg as a midpoint. therefore kjsr's egg would be 1.68% of 70.5kg which is a surprisingly small (relative to the average human baby) mass of only 1.18kg. the average crow egg size is 3.68cm x 2.67cm, and the average length is 52.5cm. using these numbers you can calculate out the dimensions of the egg itself using ratios and proportions which measure up to be a 12.8cm x 9cm egg. i'd like to note however that these are all just averages taken from midpoints, therefore an egg can be larger or smaller than this base measurement (12.8cm x 9cm, 1.18kg). however, it is possible that tengu eggs can even tend on the larger side, just slightly smaller than a full formed human baby, because eggs have a fixed capacity once the shell is formed and the above numbers are quite small. (that being said, a tengu hatchling being very, very small and highly vulnerable would also in a way explain why tengu have both eggs and the capacity to produce milk, which so fucking interestingly makes them physiologically and behaviorally more closely related to monotremes than birds). the egg itself is blue-green in color, an almost coppery shade. in addition, i do think tengu can have clutches of eggs, maybe 2 at a time, with a maximum of 3, although 1 is already a lot of work hskdfhk

gestation and incubation -> the gestational period in birds is a lot shorter than i ever expected before going down this rabbit hole. after fertilisation occurs, an egg can develop in roughly 24-48 hours or 1-2 days in most species, and are laid immediately after being fully formed. however, in monotremes, the gestation period is (technically) 11-12 days. i'd settle on a number somewhere in the middle, maybe 5-6 days, for no other reason than I Think It Would Be Interesting. when it comes to incubation though, monotremes and crows specifically have an almost similar duration with 10-11 days for monotremes and 18 days for crows. this would have to be stretched out a lottttt more for tengu given the need for the development of more highly complex structures like hands and feet, as well as a lot of other organs that is responsible for the human gestation period being 9 months long. i'd say the tengu incubation period is going to be roughly the same because of that.

milk production -> the fact that female tengu have breasts imply milk production. as a general rule birds don't do this ALTHOUGH some birds like pigeons and flamingos do produce 'crop milk' which is similar to regular milk but apparently tastes ass and also has a different composition to mammal milk. in any case, since this is not crow behavior or physiology i'll default to humans instead. human babies (in an ideal scenario) are breastfeed for about 12 months, with the first 6th months being exclusively breastfed and the remainder 6 months a mix between breastfeeding and soft foods. tengu could follow the same duration (especially in the unique case of a possible human/tengu hybrid child) or have a far shorter overall breastfeeding duration, given that the hatchling does get somewhat juiced up by the yolk while they develop in the egg.

parental care -> based on everything in the previous paragraph, parental care will be a must for tengu, especially during incubation and as a new hatchling. egg care goes into behavioral and maybe even cultural territory, so i'll try to keep it brief because i'm mainly focused on biology/physiology here. the egg itself is likely placed in the safest area of the home, with maybe some yokai enchantments (or human technology) to keep it at a steady temperature. parents take turns watching over the egg, and maybe 'egg slings' are developed that allow a parent to bring their egg around with them for comfort and security. hatch day would be the equivalent to a birthday. now onto the fun part: hatchlings. hatchlings would require immense parental care given their exceedingly small size, which makes them a lot more fragile than human babies. the first month would be the most critical, but afterwards i'd say that tengu hatchling development outpaces human baby development. after that critical month feathering of the hatchling's wings start to occur, and they'd be fully feathered by around a year old. throughout this time hatchlings would have pretty much the same needs as a human baby, so not much difference in parental care during this time.

I am a therian who fully identifies as non human. The ONLY part of me that is human is my physical vessel, otherwise I am not human at all. Because of this, I have kinsidered fictionkin many times in the past, and every time I have, I pushed it aside since the characters I were kinsidering were human when I don't feel human at all. That was until it occurred to me: both the characters I am kinsidering are characters I headcanon as therians. Therfore, it would still make sense for me to feel nonhuman. So now I have been kinsdering them all over again.

I could not find much info online since all the info about fictionkins I found was past life stuff. I personally do not belive in the multiverse (I find it a cool concept and respect anyone who does), and I don't feel like I had a past life as any characters at all. Because of this, I came to the fictionkins, nunhumans, and alterhumans of tumblr.

I am kinsedering two characters. I will post here my experiences with both.

Jade Harley

Well, from the time I first got into Homestuck I always said "She is literally me!" And it always felt far more serious than just a fun joke. I feel so connected to Jade in so many ways. I really sometimes feel like her. My friends even call me Jade for fun, but it feels more serious to me, and I am happy going by the name. I relate to her a ton, for example, not just my therianthropy headcanon, but also her personality (both good and bad), her mannerisms, and even down to the way she types with the emoticons. Maybe that's not enough to mean anything, though.

It gets a little more complicated with the second character.

Mayra Tikuna

Mayra is a character from The Post Traumatic Manifesto by vocaloid artist Weevildoing. My Weevildoing hyperfixation only started about a week ago (on December 20th, when the series ended), but I knew their music and was a part of their fan base for way longer.

From the first time I heard Taxidermy Girl, something felt extremely off about it, in a good way I mean. I am not joking when I say I listened to it 10-15 times in a row after hearing it, trying to determine what it was I felt. I couldn't tell if it was the oddly haunting melody, or the fact that I heavily relate to the song, but either way, it stuck with me a lot even before I began to actually hyperfixate on the series.

I am in countless fandoms, and within every fandom, I have a favorite character that I will go crazy at the mention of, and my obsession with them always seems so exaggerated to others. Out of all the fandoms I have been in, there are only ever very few where I have related to the characters this much, and only ever these two characters have i felt THIS attached to in this context.

Because of how much I, once again, relate to the character in many ways (Again with the ties to therianthropy, the character's gender identity, their negative experiences, etc.), I have kinsedered him as a kintype. Though, I am unsure if it is too soon to tell. It's only been a little over a week, but I still feel as though something is stirring up here.

idk if you feel racist for your identity, but I know I did in the beginning even though I supported other trace beings. what you could do to help with that is learn why trace identities aren't racist and about race being a social construct, and remind yourself of that. and like say positive things (to yourself or others) about your trace identity, maybe draw yourself as that race and maybe even make it your pfp, and that sort of thing to get comfortable with your identity. and ofc on top of that, make sure you learn about whatever race you identify as and how to be respectful so you're not actually racist

how do you know what race you are though? first of all, you don't have to label it, and you don't have to be a specific race. I don't know what I am other than Black, and that's good enough for me. one of the things that wasn't very specific for me at first was I knew I wanted my skin darker, but I didn't know what specifically I wanted it to look like until I was playing around on picrews, and picked the skin colour that made me feel the most euphoric. you can also do some research into cultures and stuff that you feel drawn to, and see what resonates

what do you do with this info? whatever you want, really. but more specifically, you could think about how you want to consider yourself; are you your race currently, are you transitioning to that race, do you want to be that race, or whatever else? and, do you want to transition? it's okay to want to transition, and even if you can't transition, it's okay to want to transition if you had the resources. and if you do want to transition (whatever that means for you), is there anything you can do to start that process, even just changing your hair? and do you want to tell anyone about your identity? how do you want other beings to refer to you? and if you know what culture/s you're part of, you could research that and participate however you want. that sounds like a lot to think about, you obviously don't have to think about it all, and just go at your own pace

The Japanese website for Endless Ocean Luminous received a major update last night, and I want to walk through the biggest new info from it with you! This is gonna be really long, so please bare with me, there's just so much to cover...

The Veiled Sea is random, but not in the way you think

It has been officially confirmed that the Veiled Sea's terrain and creatures will change with each dive, and creatures will likely spawn in accordance to the nearby terrain. But don't panic!

After filling in 80% of an area's map, you will be given a map ID, which you can use to access that exact same map, either by yourself or with friend, whenever you like! Think of them like Minecraft world seeds. An example ID (which can likely be used upon release) is given in the photo above, accompanied by what looks like a photo of the one and only...! Maybe you can reliably encounter her on that map ID?

2. Salvages are back, baybee!!

In what looks to be a system similar to EO1 and the Everblue games, salvages of all sorts can be found under small glints on the ocean floor! The P earned from salvages immediately goes into your current amount once you've picked it up. According to the photo above, salvaging is "essential to unravelling the ocean's mysteries", and another photo states that you may even find traces of "ancient civilizations"...

3. A diving rank system has been revealed, along with fishy friends

As you discover new creatures and treasures, you will unlock all sorts of things, and your dive rank will increase! Higher dive ranks have access to more suit colors (which side note omg i'm loving the options), as well as larger creatures following you, and more creatures following at the same time! What does that mean? Well... you know EO1's friendship system, where if you're friendly enough to a fish, it'll follow you around? This seems to be returning, but reworked! The creatures that follow you depends on your dive rank: at a low rank, only small fish will follow you, but as your rank increases, you can have dolphins and even huge whales tag along with you!

4. Behold a whole new range of underwater environments

I already showed pictures of them in my previous post, so I won't here to save photo space, but to list a few, underwater magma flows, shipwrecks in the abyss, polar areas, freshwater caves, and active hydrothermal vent fields have all been shown off here!

5. Different missions will be available each dive

Not much elaboration is needed here, but each dive, you will be given special missions (such as seeking out a location or creature). We don't yet know what reward these will give us, but it's gotta be good, right?

6. A new method of identifying creatures

Creatures you have yet to identify will glow, and pressing the L button while near these creatures will unlock their information. Multiple creatures' info can be acquired this way at the same time, making for easy scanning of big groups! This info will then be available in the marine encyclopedia, which can be accessed at any time.

The encyclopedia will also record the creature's behavior, habits, and the largest/smallest sizes of it you have found.

7. Creature variants have been introduced

Though the site did not elaborate on this, it did showcase a picture of a creature labelled "variant".

This one is especially interesting, because though the scientific name here is accurate, the Japanese text below it reads... "Coco Maharaja", which is this EO2 legendary's Japanese name! Will we be able to encounter the exact legendary specimens from EO2 again in the Veiled Sea, or are these simply colored variants named after them? Either way, the creature variant system is going to be awesome, I can tell!

8. Photography is back, and better than ever!

Photos will be sent to the Nintendo Switch's album when taken. What purpose they will serve in the greater game has yet to be seen, but you can take photos with yourself in them!

9. Multiplayer and singleplayer options

I know some people were worried about multiplayer being the only mode, but this is not the case! Players can dive either solo, or with a group over the internet with the "Dive Together" option. When diving together, up to 10 random players can play... or, when diving with friends, up to 30 people can!

Additional multiplayer reveals include the ability to use tons of emotes to communicate, adding emojis to creatures or treasures you find which can be seen on the map for others to check out (the Cacao Maharaja photo showcases a bunch of these emojis), being able to teleport to any player in your current dive, and more!

10. A new mythical creature...?

The array of photos shown of new creature models is absolutely astounding... but one in particular that caught my eye is the set of new prehistoric creatures!

One of these things is not like the others though... what could "Raja Emas" be...? Can prehistoric creatures be mythical too?

This update has made me more hyped than ever for this game! I'd be curious to hear your thoughts too~ :>
